Here are some of the world’s most unusual libraries.
A Tree Library
When you have a dead 110-year-old cottonwood tree outside your house, what better idea than to turn it into a library? This is just what the librarian and artist Sharalee Armitage Howard did. The tree trunk is a library complete with a roof, door, shelves inside, and a selection of books. This library in Idaho is a part of the group Little Free Libraries, where people can exchange books.
Gute Bücher für Alle
Gute Bücher für Alle is a German charity launched in 1970. It currently operates two large ships, which have docked (停靠) at 480 harbors in 150 countries, and welcomed some 49 million people onboard. The volunteers staffing the ships hold events to promote literacy, education, cross-cultural cooperation, and distribute books to those who have little access otherwise. Maybe not a library as such, as the books are not expected to be handed back, but a great idea, nevertheless.
The Red Phone Boxes Libraries
When cell phones took over from landlines and public call boxes, England’s iconic(标志性的) red phone boxes became empty and unused. In the southwestern county of Somerset, England, the first exchange library inside the phone box was founded, giving these typical England phone boxes a new life and keeping them from going to rot.
A Bookless Library
Probably the saddest inclusion in this list is the Bexar Bibliotech Library in Texas. There is reading material for sure, but it is all digital, and walking into this library has been likened to walking into an Apple store with lots of screens. While you won’t find colorful book covers or feel the thrill of pulling a book off the shelf, it seems this is the library of the future.
1. Where can readers exchange books?
A. A Tree Library and Gute Bücher für Alle.
B. A Bookless Library and Gute Bücher für Alle.
C. A Tree Library and The Red Phone Boxes Libraries.
D. Gute Bücher für Alle and The Red Phone Boxes Libraries.
2. How is Gute Bücher für Alle different from the other three libraries?
A. It is mobile. B. It is profitable.
C. It is intended for sailors. D. It has the most readers.
3. Which word can describe A Bookless Library?
A. Automatic. B. Colorful. C. Modern. D. Commercialized.
根据A Tree Library部分中的“This library in Idaho is a part of the group Little Free Libraries, where people can exchange books. (这座位于爱达荷州的图书馆是“小小免费图书馆”组织的一部分,人们可以在这里交换书籍。)”以及The Red Phone Boxes Libraries部分中的“In the southwestern county of Somerset, England, the first exchange library inside the phone box was founded, giving these typical England phone boxes a new life and keeping them from going to rot. (在英格兰西南部的萨默塞特郡,首个设立在电话亭内的共享图书馆落成了,这让这些极具英格兰特色的电话亭焕发新生,免于腐朽废弃。)”可知,这两个图书馆可以交换书籍。故选C项。
【2题详解】
推理判断题。根据Gute Bücher für Alle部分中的“It currently operates two large ships, which have docked at 480 harbors in 150 countries, and welcomed some 49 million people onboard. (该组织目前运营着两艘大型船舶,这两艘船已停靠过150 个国家的 480 个港口,并接待了约4900万名登船访客。)”可知,Gute Bücher für Alle 是依靠船只开展相关活动的,具备移动性,这是它与其他三座固定位置的图书馆的不同之处。故选A项。
根据A Bookless Library部分中的“There is reading material for sure, but it is all digital, and walking into this library has been likened to walking into an Apple store with lots of screens. (这里当然有读物,但全都是电子版的,走进这座图书馆,就好比走进了一家满是显示屏的苹果零售店。)”以及“While you won’t find colorful book covers or feel the thrill of pulling a book off the shelf, it seems this is the library of the future. (虽说在这里看不到色彩斑斓的书封,也体会不到从书架上抽出一本书的那种兴奋感,但这里俨然就是未来的图书馆。)”可知,这座无书图书馆充满数字化特征,十分现代化。故选C项。
B
A father told his son that he should not accept the Theory of Evolution just because he leaned about it in Biology class at school. He went on to say that he is teaching his son to think critically. But he isn’t.
Many people assume that critical thinking refers to questioning and criticizing in the more negative sense of the word. If they are rejecting what they are told by experts, they falsely believe that they are thinking critically. This is not uncommon. Many people claim that everything is just someone’s opinion and no one is actually right or wrong. They believe they are thinking critically when they’re actually doing the very opposite.
There are many definitions of critical thinking. To put simply, it refers to identifying and evaluating arguments, finding inconsistencies in arguments, problem solving, and thinking about our own beliefs and why we hold them.
Diane Halpern, author of Thought &Knowledge, uses this definition:“Critical thinkers are able to change their mind or the conclusion that they reached, when new information warrants such a change.”
A closed-minded person responds negatively when presented with new ideas that challenge their existing beliefs. These are the people who insist that even an expert's opinion is no better than anyone else’s. In contrast, an open-minded person suspends judgment. They seek out more information, including information that goes against beliefs they currently hold. They review the evidence that’s available and are always open to new ways of thinking. They consider all options and insist on finding a solution.
So you need to ask questions and be open-minded about the answers. You need to know how to do research and look for reliable sources. You have to think about your own thinking and question why you hold the beliefs you do. Be aware of the pre-set ideas you bring to the argument, and learn to evaluate evidence.
4. Why does the author mention the father-son example in paragraph 1?
A. To promote the practice of critical thinking.
B. To criticize the current education system.
C. To present a widespread misconception.
D. To introduce an innovative idea.
5. What does the underlined word “warrants” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Justifies. B. Matches. C. Transforms. D. Identifies.
6. How are open-minded people different from the closed-minded?
A. They respect expert authority. B. They internalize their own beliefs.
C. They keep an option-solution balance. D. They resist the urge to judge prematurely.
7. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. How to evaluate evidence. B. The process of critical thinking.
C. How to become a critical thinker. D. The benefits of being open-minded.
C 5. A 6. D 7. C
根据第一段“A father told his son that he should not accept the Theory of Evolution just because he learned about it in Biology class at school. He went on to say that he is teaching his son to think critically. But he isn't.(一位父亲告诉他的儿子,他不应该仅仅因为在学校的生物课上学到了进化论就接受它。他接着说,他正在教他的儿子进行批判性思考。但实际上他并没有教)”以及第二段“Many people assume that critical thinking refers to questioning and criticizing in the more negative sense of the word. If they are rejecting what they are told by experts, they falsely believe that they are thinking critically. This is not uncommon(许多人认为批判性思维是指在更消极的意义上进行质疑和批评。如果他们拒绝专家告诉他们的事情,他们错误地认为自己在进行批判性思考。这种情况并不少见)”可知,作者在第一段提到父子的例子是为了呈现一种普遍存在的误解,即很多人错误地认为拒绝专家的观点就是批判性思维,实际上并不是。故选C项。
【5题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第四段“Critical thinkers are able to change their mind or the conclusion that they reached, when new information warrants such a change(当新的信息warrants这种改变时,批判性思考者能够改变他们的想法或他们得出的结论)”可知,此处表示当新信息证明这种改变是合理的时候,批判性思考者能够改变想法或结论,可推理出“warrants”意思是“证明…… 是合理的;为…… 辩护”,故选A项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“A closed-minded person responds negatively when presented with new ideas that challenge their existing beliefs. These are the people who insist that even an expert's opinion is no better than anyone else's. In contrast, an open-minded person suspends judgment. They seek out more information, including information that goes against beliefs they currently hold. They review the evidence that's available and are always open to new ways of thinking(一个思想封闭的人在面对挑战他们现有信念的新想法时会做出消极的反应。这些人坚持认为,即使是专家的意见也不比其他人的好。相比之下,一个思想开放的人会暂缓判断。他们会寻找更多的信息,包括与他们目前所持信念相悖的信息。他们审查现有的证据,并且总是对新的思维方式持开放态度)”可知,思想开放的人与思想封闭的人不同之处在于,思想开放的人会暂缓判断,即他们抵制过早做出判断的冲动。故选D项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“So you need to ask questions and be open-minded about the answers. You need to know how to do research and look for reliable sources. You have to think about your own thinking and question why you hold the beliefs you do. Be aware of the pre-set ideas you bring to the argument, and learn to evaluate evidence(所以你需要提出问题,并对答案持开放态度。你需要知道如何进行研究并寻找可靠的来源。你必须思考自己的思维,并质疑自己为什么持有这样的信念。意识到你在论证中带入的预设想法,并学会评估证据)”可知,最后一段主要讲的是如何成为一个批判性思考者,即提出问题、对答案持开放态度、进行研究、思考自己的思维、质疑自己的信念、意识到预设想法和评估证据等。故选C项。
C
Polymetallic nodules (多金属结核) on the deep-ocean seafloor contain minerals like cobalt and nickel, which mining companies hope to harvest for green-energy batteries and technologies. However, a recent study suggests these prized, potato-sized rocks may also serve as a source of oxygen for the bacteria and other microorganisms living there.
Jeffrey Marlow, one of the authors of the study, said researchers planted some watertight structures on the ocean floor, which were equipped with instruments to measure the property and composition of living things and their probable usage of oxygen. Researchers measured the oxygen loss over a 48-hour period while the structure was sealed on the seafloor. Typically, a decline in oxygen is an indicator for biological abundance because breathing organisms consume it. Yet, contrary to all expectations, they observed a rise in oxygen levels, a finding that directly challenged conventional understanding.
But not everyone is on the same wavelength as him. Canada’s The Metals Co (TMC) stated the study had been rejected by four scientific publications until finding a home at Nature, which the company labeled as “a journal that has long championed the preservation of deep-sea mineral.” TMC also said the method was wrong, arguing the team’s findings contradicted other work that had been conducted in the Pacific Ocean’s Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ).“The heightened oxygen levels are in fact erroneous in the data, and we are currently preparing a peer-reviewed paper as a fightback,” said the company.
Bo Barker, a microbiologist at Denmark’s Aarhus University, said the study invited more questions than it did answers. He described it as a “novel but very confusing process for which the mechanism is still not clear.”
For years, companies such as Canada’s TMC have been battling to persuade the international governing authority to green-light their plans to obtain these rocks in the Pacific Ocean’s CCZ. The company has argued that the metals are essential for fossil fuel-free technologies and that the impact mining will have on the ocean floor is not only minimal, but also fades next to the destruction of rain forests and human communities caused by land-based mining.
8. What can be inferred about the recent study?
A. It cast light on new organisms. B. It capitalized on costly equipment.
C. It consumed considerable time. D. It documented oxygen concentration.
9. What does the underlined word “erroneous” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Misleading. B. Pronounced. C. Precise. D. Imaginary.
10. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. Summarize the previous paragraphs. B. Add some background information.
C. Clarify some writing techniques. D. Introduce a new topic for discussion.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Minerals, a double-edged Sword B. Oxygen: The Lifeline for CCZ
C. TMC, an Eco-minded Enterprise D. A Tiny Rock: A Big Wave
D 9. A 10. B 11. D

根据第二段“Jeffrey Marlow, one of the authors of the study, said researchers planted some water tight structures on the ocean floor, which were equipped with instruments to measure the property and composition of living things and their probable usage of oxygen. Researchers measured the oxygen loss over a 48-hour period while the structure was sealed on the seafloor.(该研究的作者之一杰弗里·马洛说,研究人员在海底放置了一些防水结构,这些结构配备了测量生物特性和组成以及它们可能使用氧气的仪器。研究人员测量了该结构在海底密封48小时期间的氧气损失)”可知,这项研究记录了氧气浓度的变化。故选D。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“TMC also said the method was wrong, arguing the team’s findings contradicted other work that had been conducted in the Pacific Ocean’s Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ).(TMC还表示,该方法错误,认为该团队的研究结果与在太平洋克拉里昂-克利珀顿区进行的其他研究相矛盾)”以及后文“and we are currently preparing a peer-reviewed paper as a fightback(我们目前正在准备一篇经过同行评审的论文作为反击)”可知,TMC认为该团队的研究方法错误,研究结果与其他研究相矛盾,因此他们认为数据中的氧气水平升高是错误的,故划线词意思是“错误的,误导的”。故选A。
根据最后一段“For years, companies such as Canada’s TMC have been battling to persuade the international governing authority to green-light their plans to obtain these rocks in the Pacific Ocean’s CCZ. The company has argued that the metals are essential for fossil fuel-free technologies and that the impact mining will have on the ocean floor is not only minimal, but also fades next to the destruction of rain forests and human communities caused by land-based mining.(多年来,像加拿大TMC这样的公司一直在努力说服国际管理机构批准他们在太平洋克拉里昂-克利珀顿区获取这些岩石的计划。该公司认为,这些金属对于无化石燃料技术至关重要,而且采矿对海底的影响不仅最小,而且与陆地采矿对雨林和人类社区造成的破坏相比,也微不足道)”可推知,作者在最后一段的目的是增加一些背景信息。故选B。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Polymetallic nodules (多金属结核) on the deep-ocean seafloor contain minerals like cobalt and nickel, which mining companies hope to harvest for green-energy batteries and technologies. However, a recent study suggests these prized, potato-sized rocks may also serve as a source of oxygen for the bacteria and other microorganisms living there.(深海海底的多金属结核含有钴和镍等矿物质,矿业公司希望从中获取绿色能源电池和技术。然而,最近的一项研究表明,这些珍贵的、土豆大小的岩石也可能是生活在那里的细菌和其他微生物的氧气来源)”结合文章主要讲述了最近一项关于深海海底多金属结核的研究引发了争议,该研究发现这些结核可能是细菌等微生物的氧气来源,但这一结论受到了一些公司和科学家的质疑。可知,D选项“一块小石头:掀起大波澜”最符合文章标题。故选D。
D
Is there anything more boring than the endless drive to make every waking moment more productive? “If I can save ten seconds on a process that happens ten times per day, that’s a minute and 40 seconds saved per day,” a productivity expert recently advised in Time magazine, to take just one example. “Over the course of a year, that’s ten hours saved.”
If that sounds exhausting, the good news is that there are many reasons to avoid putting ourselves under this kind of non-stop pressure – not least the latest neuroscience on how the brain regulates focus, as we explore in “Take control of your brain’s master switch to optimize (最优化) how you think”.
It has to do with a tiny bundle of blue-tinged neurons in the brainstem called the locus coeruleus. According to new research, this structure acts like a gear lever that sets the pace of our brain’s processing. In Gear 1, the mind can wander freely; in Gear 2, we are highly engaged and attentive; and in Gear 3, we are hyperalert and quick to respond to a crisis.
What various experiments have now shown is that moderate locus coeruleus activity – Gear 2— is the optimum state for many types of cognitive activity. It increases our concentration, while also allowing for the kind of thinking necessary for problem-solving. Gear 3 may be useful when we are facing an emergency, but it reduces our capacity to think analytically or creatively.
Crucially, it turns out that the locus coeruleus can easily be tipped into Gear 3 whenever we are under pressure. If we are constantly pushing ourselves to achieve more and more in a limited amount of time, we may find ourselves stuck in this overwhelming and exhausting brain state, which will only reduce the quality of our output in the long term.
With that in mind, it may, in fact, be foolish to insist on driving the engine of thought at ever greater speeds all the time. What is too often overlooked is the need to give your brain plenty of opportunity to return to a lower gear. For high-quality thinking, contrary to much of the productivity advice, downtime may be just as productive as uptime.
12. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. The author is critical of the advice given by productivity experts.
B. The author is indifferent to the advice given by productivity experts.
C. The author agrees with the productivity experts’ approach to time management.
D. The author believes that everyone should follow the advice of productivity experts.
13. What does the underlined phrase “locus coeruleus” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. A part of the brain that controls sleep patterns.
B. A type of cognitive activity that enhances creativity.
C. A method of time management used by productivity experts.
D. A small group of neurons in the brainstem that regulate focus.
14. Which gear state of the locus coeruleus is best for cognitive activity?
A. Gear 1, where the mind can wander freely.
B. Gear 2, where we are highly engaged and attentive.
C. Gear 3, where we are hyperalert and quick to respond.
D. Any gear state, as they are equally beneficial for cognitive activity.
15. What can be inferred about the author’s view?
A. Constant productivity is the key to success.
B. Downtime is a waste of time and should be minimized.
C. Downtime is as important as uptime for productivity.
D. Downtime is a must for those who are not productive.
A 13. D 14. B 15. C
根据第二段“If that sounds exhausting, the good news is that there are many reasons to avoid putting ourselves under this kind of non-stop pressure — not least the latest neuroscience on how the brain regulates focus, as we explore in “Take control of your brain’s master switch to optimize (最优化) how you think”. (如果这听起来很累,好消息是,有很多原因可以避免让自己处于这种不停的压力之下——尤其是最新的神经科学关于大脑如何调节注意力的研究,正如我们在“控制大脑的主开关以优化你的思考方式”中所探讨的那样)”可知,第二段的主要讲述了作者对生产力专家的建议持批评态度。故选A。
根据第三段“It has to do with a tiny bundle of blue-tinged neurons in the brainstem called the locus coeruleus. According to new research, this structure acts like a gear lever that sets the pace of our brain’s processing. In Gear 1, the mind can wander freely; in Gear 2, we are highly engaged and attentive; and in Gear 3, we are hyperalert and quick to respond to a crisis. (这与脑干中一小束蓝色神经元有关,称为locus coeruleus。根据新的研究,这种结构就像一个变速杆,可以设定我们大脑处理的速度。在1挡中,心灵可以自由漫步;在2挡中,我们非常投入和专注;在3挡中,我们高度警觉,对危机反应迅速)”可知,locus coeruleus是脑干中一小束蓝色神经元,可以调节注意力。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“What various experiments have now shown is that moderate locus coeruleus activity – Gear 2— is the optimum state for many types of cognitive activity. It increases our concentration, while also allowing for the kind of thinking necessary for problem-solving. (现在各种实验表明,适度的蓝斑活动——2挡——是许多类型认知活动的最佳状态。它增加了我们的注意力,同时也允许我们进行解决问题所需的思考)”可知,2挡状态对认知活动最好,因为那个状态让我们高度投入和专注。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“What is too often overlooked is the need to give your brain plenty of opportunity to return to a lower gear. For high-quality thinking, contrary to much of the productivity advice, downtime may be just as productive as uptime. (经常被忽视的是,需要给你的大脑足够的机会回到较低的档位。对于高质量的思考,与大多数生产力建议相反,停机时间可能和正常运行时间一样富有成效)”可推知,作者认为停机时间与正常运行时间对生产力同样重要。故选C。

On the video games circuit, an arena dominated by Western legends, one can say the Chinese legends have arrived. On Tuesday, the day of its official release,1.6 million global players were playing together online the newly developed game Black Myth: Wukong on the Steam platform. It had more takers than Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and Elden Ring, all popular worldwide. ____16____
The investment has received good returns as by Tuesday evening over 3 million copies had already been sold on video game digital distribution service Steam. Another 1.5 million copies were sold on WeGame, Epic and PlayStation services, with the total sales having exceeded 1.5 billion yuan ($210.3 million). ____17____.
It was in the 1960s and 1970s that video games first emerged in Europe, the US, and Japan, with the first batch of developers naturally choosing Western legendary and historical stories as the basis of their games. Contra and Super Contra had their tales started in New Zealand, the King of Dragons and the Knights of the Round were based on the novel Lord of Rings and the story of Arthur King, while Super Mario told stories about an Italian pipe worker’s adventures in the underworld of New York.
____18____ Games that are popular among games around the world are still developed abroad, such as Starcraft, Warcraft, and Counter-Strike, which are popular in Internet cafes. Even old favorites such as Red Alert 2 or WarCraft Ⅲ or SuperMario have a Western cultural background. After them, there is Dota 2 and its predecessor Dota, which, too, are based on a fictional magical world but most of their heroes, such as Alchemist, Paladin Om-niknight and Naga Siren can all be traced to ancient European tales. Elden Ring’s characters are mostly Western in style. ____19____ Surely they do—their world was invented by English-speaking teams based on English-language literature to serve English-speaking customers.
China had its games but most were played domestically only. ____20____ By July, its international server claimed to have over 50 million registered users accumulated, covering more than 160 countries and regions worldwide.
Compared with Honor of Kings, Black Myth: Wukong is the first Chinese game developed by a Chinese team based on a Chinese legend that has gained world influences, which makes it a more suitable culture exporter. Its engine, modeling, and quality of image are all among the world’s mainstream ones, making it appealing to global players.
A. So foreign players ask around: “What is the origin of that Chinese monkey”?
B. Of course, “Black Myth: Wukong” made a good start, can not be separated from the development team for six years to forge a sword.
C. By the beginning of the 21st century, computers had replaced arcade and red and white machines.
D. Compared with Honor of Kings, in which most heroes are drawn from Chinese history or legends.
E. Throughout the history of gaming, such a highlight moment is truly rare.
F. All of which made some joke that all legendary heroes have one thing in common, namely speaking fluent, standard English.
G. It was not until Honor of Kings, which picked the absolute majority of its heroes from Chinese legends and history, was welcomed by players worldwide that the situation started to change.
A 17. E 18. C 19. F 20. G

We all like to think that we have all the time in the world, but do we really? This question stayed in my mind as I faced the tough situation of nearly losing my father. That unforgettable experience taught me a lesson about the shortness of life and the importance of treasuring every moment with our loved ones.
Our family was a tight unit built around my father’s work as a truck driver — he spent long hours on the road delivering goods across the state, but always made sure to be home for Sunday dinners. Dad was more than just a provider; he was the backbone of our family, the one who fixed broken bikes and reminded us daily that “hard work and heart can get you through anything”. We’d grown used to his routine — leaving in early mornings, returning in late evenings — and never thought twice about how delicate those moments of togetherness might be.
It was a quiet morning in September when my life took an unexpected turn. Around 3:30, a gentle whisper in my ear awakened me from sleep, “Judy, Judy, wake up.” Half-asleep and confused, I found myself staring at my aunt Eva, who was standing over me. “Aunt Eva, are you really here, or am I dreaming?” I asked, trying to distinguish reality from a dream. Her response was both relieving and alarming, “Yes, it is me. Everything is going to be OK. You just need to get up, get dressed, and help your little sisters get ready.” Despite her attempts at calmness, I could tell for sure the seriousness of the situation from the tremble in her voice.
As soon as we were ready, we piled into Aunt Eva’s car, still confused about the unfolding events. “Where are we going? Where are my mom and dad?” I asked. Aunt Eva, trying to maintain her calmness, replied, “I am going to take you to them. Just have a short sleep, and I will wake you up when we are there.” The 30-minute drive to Memorial Hermann Hospital felt almost like a century. As we eventually entered the emergency room, I saw my mom crying softly over there.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
At that moment, I knew something was terribly wrong.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After months of stay in the hospital, my father was finally allowed to return home.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
At that moment, I knew something was terribly wrong. My worst fears were confirmed when I learned about my father’s accident. He was trapped under his truck after it turned over, with his left leg badly injured by the heavy vehicle’s weight. Thus immediate emergency surgery was required. The doctors worked tirelessly to save his leg, but ultimately they had to cut it from above the knee. Seeing him in hospital, connected to machines that helped him breathe, was really heartbreaking. I felt like I was in a terrifying dream from which I couldn’t wake up. For the next few days, my mother and I took turns taking care of my father and helping him to recover.
After months of stay in the hospital, my father was finally allowed to return home. When we entered our house, my father was very delighted. He looked around the house and let out a sigh of relief. “Thanks to the great care of you and your mother, we can enjoy the gathering of our family,” he said. Only then did I realize that faced with the setbacks, my father was determined and kept optimistic. He had a strong desire to keep us company. I came to understand how happy it was to have my father with us and how important it was to spend time with our loved ones.

A
Here are some of the world’s most unusual libraries.
