When it comes to New York City, most people probably picture in their minds the attractive lifestyles of the rich and famous or think of Broadway, Times Square and other tourist attractions. However, there is another side of New York City that is far less known. The summer after tenth grade, I went with my group on a mission trip to New York City for a week.
I had always known the existence of poverty in major cities, but I had never seen it to a degree as high as we did there. We worked at several different locations with our small groups. One day, we served at a soup kitchen and what I saw astounded me. I couldn’t believe my eyes. We saw people from all walks of life. We met people who came there because they had no job, no home and no money. Another day, we volunteered at a homeless shelter. We helped people there do some cleaning and spent time talking to them and listening to their stories. It was incredible to see how thankful they were to us for just spending a couple of hours talking to them, or just be listening.
Every person we met on that trip had a unique story, and they were surprisingly willing to share. They were just in so much need to be listened to. Besides, whatever their stories were, there was a common thread we saw in them—hope. These were people who had nothing and yet they were so hopeful about their future.
My experience during that summer changed my life. I used to picture my future as containing a big house, fancy cars and a lot of money, but now I see my future differently. I hope it will be one where I can be helpful to others and give back to society. After college, I would really like to work for some sort of global aid organization that deals with the social issues, such as poverty and homelessness.
4. What is the part of New York that is less known to people? (10 words)
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
5. What does the underlined word “astounded” in Paragraph 2 mean? (1 word)
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
6. What did the author see in the people at the homeless shelter? (15 words)
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
7. What kind of organizations the author want to work for after college? (10 words)
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
8. How does the author’s experience inspire you? (20 words)
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
4. That a lot of people are living in poverty./The side of poverty and homelessness.
5. Surprised./Astonished./Shocked./Startled.
6. They needed to be heard and were hopeful about their future.
7. A global aid organization that deals with the social issues.
8. He shows me how important it is to help other people and contribute to society.

由文章第二段中“I had always known the existence of poverty in major cities, but I had never seen it to a degree as high as we did there. (我一直知道大城市中存在贫困,但我从未见过像我们在那里所见的那样严重的贫困。)”和“We met people who came there because they had no job, no home and no money. (我们遇到了一些人,他们来这里是因为没有工作,没有家,没有钱。)”可知,在纽约很多人生活在贫困中或纽约有贫困和无家可归的一面。故答案为:That a lot of people are living in poverty./The side of poverty and homelessness.。
由文章第二段中“I couldn’t believe my eyes. (我简直不敢相信自己的眼睛。)”可知,作者不敢相信自己看到的,因此astounded意为“使惊讶”,与Surprised./Astonished./Shocked./Startled.。故答案为:Surprised./Astonished./Shocked./Startled.。
【6题详解】
考查细节理解。由文章倒数第二段“Every person we met on that trip had a unique story, and they were surprisingly willing to share. They were just in so much need to be listened to. Besides, whatever their stories were, there was a common thread we saw in them—hope. These were people who had nothing and yet they were so hopeful about their future. (我们在那次旅行中遇到的每个人都有一个独特的故事,令人惊讶的是,他们都愿意分享。他们只是太需要被倾听了。此外,不管他们的故事是什么,我们都在他们身上看到了一条共同的线索——希望。这些人一无所有,却对未来充满希望。)”可知,他们需要被倾听,并对自己的未来充满希望。故答案为:They needed to be heard and were hopeful about their future.。
After college, I would really like to work for some sort of global aid organization that deals with the social issues, such as poverty and homelessness. B
It turns out that overworking your brain with either physical or mental exercise may lower your ability to put off self-satisfaction. And that may set you up for poor choices in your eating habits, self-care and finances.
In a new study, athletes were asked to overtrain for three out of nine weeks, and scientists compared them to a group who did a normal 9-week training program. Not only did those overworked athletes perform worse on a cycling test at the end of the over-training, MRIs (磁共振成像像片) of their brains during behavioral tasks also showed more tiredness in the cognitive (认知的) control part of the brain system.
“Cognitive control in this situation is the ability to keep exercising without being prevented by things like muscle pain,” said study author Bastien Blain, a researcher at University College London. “And what we found is that there is an intellectual (智力的) part involved in exercising and it has a limited ability. You cannot use it forever.” In other words, your brain will burn out and affect your body’s ability to exercise.
But that’s not all. Overworking that part of the brain also reduced the athletes’ abilities to fight temptation (诱惑) of immediate self-satisfaction. “For example, they were asked whether they preferred $10 now or $50 in six months,” Blain said. “And those who over trained were more likely to choose $10 now.” Blain had done a similar study in 2016. A group of 58 adults performed hard tasks over a 6-hour period, then underwent MRI imaging and were asked if they would choose $5 now or $50 later. Researchers found overworked brains were much more likely to choose $5 now.
In fact, another study done by Cornier found that regular limited exercise was related to reducing the wish to eat. “Those people consume less and they lost weight. And the more we saw that change in brain activity due to exercise, the more weight they lost,” Cornier said.
9. What happened to the overworked athletes in the study?
A. They would get tired of normal training. B. They behaved better in the cycling test.
C. They improved their self-satisfaction. D. They did poorly in cognitive control.
10. What did Blain find in 2016?
A. MRI imaging made people clever.
B. Adults preferred challenging tasks.
C. Overworked people tend to choose immediate rewards.
D. A 6-hour period of exercise benefited people.
11. According to Cornier, why can people lose weight by doing limited exercise regularly?
A. It makes people eat less.
B. It consumes much energy.
C. It helps people to feel good.
D. It improves people’s sleep.
12. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Over exercise could lead to bad decisions
B. Cognitive control reflects your mental health
C. Exercise promotes your intellectual development
D. Overworking your brain can change your eating habits
D 10. C 11. A 12. A
根据第二段的“Not only did those overworked athletes perform worse on a cycling test at the end of the over-training, MRIs (磁共振成像像片) of their brains during behavioral tasks also showed more tiredness in the cognitive (认知的) control part of the brain system.(那些过度训练的运动员不仅在过度训练结束时的自行车测试中表现更差,而且在进行行为任务时,他们大脑的磁共振成像也显示出认知控制系统更加疲劳)”可知,过度训练的运动员不仅在自行车测试中的表现更差,而且他们的大脑认知控制系统也显示出了更多的疲劳。
根据第四段的“Overworking that part of the brain also reduced the athletes’ abilities to fight temptation (诱惑) of immediate self-satisfaction.(过度使用大脑的那一部分也降低了运动员抵抗即时自我满足诱惑的能力)”以及“Researchers found overworked brains were much more likely to choose $5 now.(研究人员发现,过度使用的大脑更倾向于选择现在就拿5美元)”可知,在过度工作后,人们更倾向于选择立即获得的小额现金而不是延迟的大额回报,由此可知,过度劳累会使人们往往选择得到即时奖励。
根据第五段的“In fact, another study done by Cornier found that regular limited exercise was related to reducing the wish to eat. “Those people consume less and they lost weight. And the more we saw that change in brain activity due to exercise, the more weight they lost,” Cornier said.(事实上,科尼尔进行的另一项研究发现,规律的有限锻炼与减少进食欲望有关。科尼尔说:“这些人消耗得更少,他们的体重也下降了。而且我们观察到由于锻炼引起的大脑活动变化越大,他们的体重下降得就越多。”)”可知,定期适度运动会使人们少吃,从而容易减肥。故选A项。
根据第一段的“It turns out that overworking your brain with either physical or mental exercise may lower your ability to put off self-satisfaction. And that may set you up for poor choices in your eating habits, self-care and finances.(结果表明,无论是通过体力还是脑力劳动过度使用你的大脑,都可能降低你推迟自我满足的能力。这可能会导致你在饮食习惯、自我照顾和财务方面做出不良选择)”及后面对相关研究的介绍可知,本文主要介绍的是过度锻炼会导致人们做出不明智的决定,所以题目“过度运动可能导致错误决策”概括了全文的主题,可以作为本文的合适标题。故选A项。
C
Nearly 40 percent of Americans over the age of 65 take five or more different drugs, and doctors often simply have to monitor patients to see if any of those drugs combine to create negative side effects. When a doctor prescribes (给……开药) a patient more than one drug at the same time, they currently have no way to predict whether that combination of these drugswill have a negative side effect. A new system from a team of computer scientists at Stanford University presents a novel solution — an AI-driven computer system that can predict theconsequences of combining two drugs.
Drug combinations are a remarkably unstudied area, but as Marinka Zitnik explains, “It’spractically impossible to test a new drug in combination with all other drugs, because just forone drug that would be five thousand new experiments.” Besides, to maintain accuracy alsoneeds strict research procedures.
So Zitnik and her Stanford colleagues set out to find a solution to the problem. They created a massive deep learning system trained on data encompassing (包含) over l9,00 oproteins and how different drugs interact with those proteins. The system is called Decagon, and it can effectively predict the consequences of combining any two different drugs.
To test out Decagon’s predictive abilities the team examined 10 of the systems predicted drug pair interactions that didn’t have clearly known unfavourable interactions. The researchers found new supporting case study evidence backing up 8 of those 10 predictions. For example, one prediction from Decagon suggested muscle inflammation(炎症) would be caused by combining a certain cholesterol (胆固醇) drug with a blood pressure medication. This negative side effect of combining those two drugs was only recently confirmed by a casestudy published in 2017.
The next stage in the project is to try to turn Decagon into a more user-friendly tool thatdoctors can easily navigate (导航) for information when prescribing combinations of drugs, benefiting more people. At this stage, the system only evaluates (评估) drug pairs but there searchers hope to expand that into more complex combinations of drugs in the future.
13. What problem faces doctors when prescribing several drugs together?
A. They can’t prevent side effects of drugs.
B. They don’t know the bad influences of the combination.
C. They have to monitor whether patients will take drugs.
D. They must predict the effects of drugs with an Al system.
14. Why is the area of drug combinations almost unstudied?
A. They require numerous experiments.
B. They are not that important to people.
C. It’s rather expensive to do the research.
D. It’s impossible to keep results accurate.
15. What can we know about Decagon?
A. It can predict influences of combining three drugs.
B. It wouldn’t contribute to people’s deep learning.
C. It can tell the results of combining two drugs.
D. It analyses how proteins interact with each other.
16. Which aspect will researchers work on in the future?
A. Making the system availa ble to more people.
B. Improving some critical functions of the system.
C. Enhancing people’s recognition on its accuracy.
D. Adopting a more friendly attitude toward patients.
B 14. A 15. C 16. B
根据第一段第二句话“they currently have no way to predict whether that combination of these drugs will have a negative side effect(他们目前还没有办法预测这些药物的组合是否会产生负面的副作用。)”
故选A。
根据第三段的最后一句话“The system is called Decagon, and it can effectively predict the consequences of combining any two different drugs.(这个系统被称为Decagon,它可以有效地预测任何两种不同药物结合的后果。)”
根据文章最后一段中“The next stage in the project is to try to turn Decagon into a more user-friendly tool thatdoctors can easily navigate(导航) for information when prescribing combinations of drugs, benefiting more people. At this stage, the system only evaluates(评估) drug pairs but there searchers hope to expand that into more complex combinations of drugs in the future.(该项目下一步是试图将Decagon变成一个更加用户友好的工具,医生可以方便地在处方药物组合时导航获取信息,从而使更多的人受益。在这个阶段,该系统只评估药物对,但研究人员希望在未来将其扩展到更复杂的药物组合中。)”可知,下一个阶段,这个项目是想把这个系统变得对使用者更为友好,更方便于定位到要找的信息,研究人员希望未来可以将这个系统延伸到更多复杂药物的混合中去。比较四个选项,只有B选项“Improving some critical functions of the system(改进系统的一些关键功能。)”

Once upon a time, there was a young athletic boy who is really hungry for success. For him, winning was everything and success was measured just by winning. He practised hard every day to win every race lying ahead of him.
One day, the boy was preparing himself for a running competition in his small village. A large crowd had gathered to witness the sporting event. A wise old man had travelled far to bear witness also. The race began. The boy with his determination, strength and power took the winning line and came to the first. The crowd were excited, cheering and waving at the boy. However, the wise man remained still and calm, expressing no excitement. The little boy, however, felt proud and important.
A second race was called and two new young fit challengers came forward to run with him. The race was started and sure enough the little boy came through and finished first. Once again the crowd was excited again, and cheered and waved at the boy. The wise man remained still and calm again, expressing no excitement. The little boy, however, felt proud and important.
Another race, the wise old man stepped forward and presented the little boy with two new challengers, an elderly weak lady and a blind man. “What is this?” the little boy was puzzled. “This is no race!” he claimed. “Race,” said the wise man.

“Race again,” replied the wise man, “this time finish together with all three of you.”
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The race was started and the boy was the only finisher. The other two challengers left standing at the starting line. The little boy was ecstatic, so he raised his arms in delight. The crowd, however, was silent showing no sentiment toward the little boy. “What has happened? Why don’t the people join in my success?” he asked the wise old man.
“Race again,” replied the wise man, “this time finish together with all three of you.” The little boy thought a little, stood in the middle of the blind and the weak, and then took the two challengers. The little boy walked slowly to the finishing line and crossed it. The crowd were crazy and cheered and waved at the boy. The wise man smiled, nodding his head. The little boy felt proud and important. Lost in deep thought for a while, the boy thanked the wise old man for making him realize the real meaning of success. From then on, he could be regarded as a truly successful athletic.
