James Watson is a great American geneticist and biophysicist. He was born on April 6 in 1928 in Chicago. As a child, he loved bird-watching with his father. He attended the University of Chicago, earning a degree in zoology in 1947. During these years his boyhood interest in bird-watching had developed into a serious love for learning genetics. Watson was given a scholarship to Indiana University where he received his doctorate in 1950.
Watson then moved to Copenhagen, continuing with his research. He became interested in the DNA molecule (分子) and joined a research team at the Cavendish Laboratory of the University of Cambridge with Francis Crick. Here, Watson made his famous discovery recognizing the double helix structure (双螺旋结构) of DNA.
He became a professor of biology at Harvard University in 1955, a job he held until 1976. His research at Harvard zeroed in on RNA and its role in passing on genetic information, uncovering RNA’s function in gene expression. He also became the director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York in 1968, a job that he held for 35 years. Watson turned the lab into a world center for research in molecular biology. Watson fixed his research at the lab on exploring molecular biology and genetics in order to advance the understanding and ability to recognize human diseases, and other causes of human suffering.
Watson got worldwide fame as the co-author of four scientific papers between 1953 and 1954 that laid down the double helix structure of DNA. This discovery won him the Nobel Prize in 1962. During the 1960s, Watson became one of the most celebrated science writers, when he published his textbook Molecular Biology of the Gene in 1965 and his best-seller The Double Helix in 1968. Watson became the unquestioned leading voice in the whole of American science. He is a good example of the scientific creativity in 20th-century science, giving rise to molecular biology and two ways it has been put to use: biotechnology and the “Human Genome Project”.
24. When did James Watson get his second degree?
A. After he became a professor. B. After he moved to Copenhagen.
C. When he was about 22 years old. D. When he studied in the University of Chicago.
25. Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “zeroed in on”?
A. Concentrated on. B. Gave up. C. Switched off. D. Lived off.
26. What can we know about James Watson?
A. He only focused on DNA structure research. B. He was good at both science and writing.
C. His books didn’t gain popularity. D. He never won the Nobel Prize for DNA research.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To compare different fields of science.
B. To encourage readers to study genetics.
C. To explain the importance of DNA double helix.
D. To introduce James Watson’s life and achievements.

C
People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.
Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and overlook the mouth.”
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted (厌恶的), angry, or neutral (中性的). They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”
In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified (多样化) these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.
28.The discovery shows that Westerners ________.
A.consider facial expressions universally reliable B.pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth
C.observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways D.have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions
29.What were the people asked to do in the study?
A.To make a face at each other. B.To get their faces impressive.
C.To classify some face pictures. D.To observe the researchers' faces.
30.In comparison with Westerners, Easterners are likely to ________.
A.examine the eyes more attentively B.study the mouth more frequently
C.perform translation more successfully D.read facial expressions more correctly
31.What key weakness might critics highlight about the study’s design?
A.Dependence on subjective emotion categorization.
B.Use of posed photos instead of natural expressions.
C.Lack of more diverse American cultural groups.
D.Failure to track eye movements during observation.
【答案】28.B 29.C 30.A 31.C
根据第三段““We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and overlook the mouth.”(“我们证明,东亚人和西方人在解读面部表情时关注的面部特征有所不同,”杰克说,“西方人对眼睛和嘴巴的关注程度相当,而东亚人则更注重眼睛,忽视嘴巴。”)”
根据第五段中“The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted (厌恶的), angry, or neutral (中性的).(研究人员通过记录13名西方白人和13名东亚人在观看表情丰富的人脸图片时的眼动轨迹,研究了文化差异对面部表情识别的影响,并将这些表情分类为:快乐、悲伤、惊讶、恐惧、厌恶、愤怒或中性。)”
根据第二段“Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.(格拉斯哥大学的研究员拉切尔·杰克表示,东亚人会将注意力集中在眼睛上,而不是像西方人会均匀扫视整个面部。)”以及第六段中“It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did.(结果表明,东方人对眼睛的注意力要比西方人集中得多,犯的错误也明显多于西方人。)”
根据第五段“The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted (厌恶的), angry, or neutral (中性的). They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.(研究人员通过记录13名西方白人和13名东亚人在观看表情丰富的人脸图片时的眼动轨迹,研究了文化差异对面部表情识别的影响,并将这些表情分类为:快乐、悲伤、惊讶、恐惧、厌恶、愤怒或中性。他们比较了参与者使用各自特有的眼动策略解读这些面部表情的准确程度。)”可知,研究中的西方参与者仅包含13名西方白人,样本的族群与文化构成非常单一,缺乏更多元的美国文化群体作为支撑,会影响研究结论的普适性,这是研究设计的核心短板。
D
A long face is not the only sign that someone is down. A recent study found how people walk is revealing too, particularly the swing of the arms and legs.
“Walking is one of the most familiar and well-practiced whole-body movements for humans,” said Mina Wakabayashi, the lead author of the study. “Because of this, changes in emotional state may naturally appear in the way we walk. In our results, movements with larger arm and leg swings were more likely to be perceived as angry, whereas movements with smaller swings were more likely to be perceived as sad or fearful.”
During the research, the scientists asked actors to recall life events that caused anger, happiness, fear or sadness and then walk a short distance while keeping each memory in mind. The participants wore tight clothing and reflective markers, allowing the researchers to create point-light videos from the side and front which captured their way of walking without their facial expressions and other bodily cues. Volunteers then watched the videos and declared what emotion each pace brought. They recognized all of the portrayed emotions better than chance. “To some degree, the walkers’ intended emotions were indeed perceived by the observers,” the researchers wrote in Royal Society Open Science.
A second experiment tried to determine specific movements that gave away the walkers’ emotions. To do this, the researchers took walking videos from people without extreme emotions and edited the videos to increase or reduce the arm and leg swinging. Again, the observers saw more pronounced swinging as angry, with less seen as sad or fearful.
Emotions are likely to influence all manner of other ways in which people move their bodies, and researchers hope to explore these in future work. “Being able to infer emotions from body movement may help us understand others quickly during social interactions, even without words,” Wakabayash said. That could mean spotting people’s emotions from afar and changing how we approach them, depending on whether they seem angry or sad.
32.How do annoyed people tend to walk according to the study?
A.With smaller arm and leg swings. B.With larger arm and leg swings.
C.With quicker and lighter steps. D.With longer and firmer paces.
33.What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A.Actors are full of emotions. B.Researchers prefer using videos.
C.The participants were casually dressed. D.The results matched researchers’ prediction.
34.What does the second experiment focus on?
A.The link between certain action and emotion.
B.The anger most people feel when walking.
C.The ability of people to control feelings.
D.The accuracy of emotion experiments.
35.What will the researchers explore next?
A.Skills to improve social communication.
B.Methods of controlling one’s own emotions.
C.The connection between walking and health.
D.Other body movements affected by emotions.
【答案】32.B 33.D 34.A 35.D
根据第二段中的“In our results, movements with larger arm and leg swings were more likely to be perceived as angry, whereas movements with smaller swings were more likely to be perceived as sad or fearful.(在我们的研究结果中,手臂和腿部摆动幅度较大的动作更有可能被视为愤怒,而摆动幅度较小的动作则更有可能被视为悲伤或恐惧)”可知,生气的人走路时手臂和腿部的摆动幅度更大。
根据第四段中的“A second experiment tried to determine specific movements that gave away the walkers’ emotions.(第二项实验试图确定哪些特定动作会暴露步行者的情绪)”可知,第二个实验旨在明确特定动作与情绪之间的对应关系。
根据末段中的“Emotions are likely to influence all manner of other ways in which people move their bodies, and researchers hope to explore these in future work.(情绪很可能会影响人们身体动作的其他各种方式,研究人员希望在未来的工作中探索这些方面)”可知,研究者下一步将探索受情绪影响的其他身体动作。

At its most basic level, laughter affects our physical body. It enables us to take in more oxygenated air and stimulate our lungs. 36 This leads to several benefits.
Increases heart health
As we laugh at funny events, our cardiac (心脏的) health improves. Laughter provides this benefit by increasing our heart rate and lowering our blood pressure. 37 One study found that people who rarely or never laughed were 1.21 times more likely to have heart disease than those who laughed daily. This helps strengthen the benefits of humour on heart health.
Reduces physical pain
Let’s say we have a severe headache but are watching an extremely funny show. As we watch and laugh, we may become at least somewhat distracted from the headache and discomfort. 38 Established mechanisms are operating internally to enhance our ability to resist pain. Naturally occurring hormones called endorphins, for example, get to work. Because we’re laughing up a storm, our body produces these natural painkillers.
39
Laughing offers another physical benefit — it can help us sleep better. In one small-scale study, residents at a long-term care hospital engaged in 40-minute laughter therapy sessions twice a week for four weeks. Their sleep quality improved during this time, as did their feelings of depression. Combining laughter with yoga, called laughing yoga, has also been found to improve sleep quality and help us fall asleep faster. This form of yoga involves movements that make us want to laugh.
Boosts immunity
Overall, extensive laughter supports the immune system, which makes us more resistant to disease. By laughing, we increase antibody-producing cells and enhance the effectiveness of T cells in our body. 40 Physicians and mental health professionals can use laughter to help patients achieve positive health outcomes.
A.Improves sleep.
B.Improves social communication.
C.Laughter helps reduce daily stress.
D.This is much like how our body responds to exercise.
E.These tiny things act like a defense army to fight illness.
F.But the distraction alone isn’t what reduces our pain perception.
G.Moments of loud laughter also relieve tension in our muscles.

39.由下文“Laughing offers another physical benefit — it can help us sleep better.(大笑还有另一项生理益处——改善睡眠。)”

A study 56 (conduct) by leading behavioral scientists shows that nearly 70% of communication happens nonverbally. Understanding human body language is essential because not everyone possesses a perfect poker face at all times. Even when individuals try their hardest to remain polite, their true internal feelings often leak out through subtle facial signals, 57 (imply) that they might be feeling irritated or overwhelmed.
One common red flag is the frequent and sudden use of mobile phones. In today’s always-connected culture, looking down at a digital screen provides a socially acceptable escape. However, such behavior often signals deep boredom or annoyance. If someone is 58 (genuine) interested in what you are saying, they will stay fully engaged. In some strict 59 (profession) settings, employees are suggested that they 60 (ban) from using smartphones during meetings to ensure that everyone focuses entirely on 61 social interaction occurring at that moment.
Physical movements also provide vital clues. Many people tend to shift in their seats or take heavy 62 (breath) when annoyed. These actions are attempts to reset the nervous system and regain calmness. By making a careful 63 (compare) between a person’s normal behavior and these sudden physical shifts, you can easily detect discomfort. Learning to interpret these signals correctly helps build better communication and avoid misunderstandings.
These behaviors often indicate a hidden conflict. The conversation, 64 which someone’s sudden sighing is a direct response, usually ends awkwardly if the signs are ignored. Ultimately, 65 matters most is our ability to read the room and respect others’ personal boundaries.
56.conducted 57.implying 58.genuinely 59.professional 60.should be banned/be banned 61.the 62.breaths 63.comparison 64.to 65.what
句子主干为“their true internal feelings often leak out through subtle facial signals”,且逗号后无连词,空处应用非谓语动词,imply与前面整个句子构成主动关系,因此用现在分词作结果状语。故填implying。
故填(should) be banned。
故填the。
take...breaths为固定搭配,意为“呼吸”,take heavy breaths表示“深呼吸”。故填breaths。
make a comparison为固定搭配,意为“进行比较”,a后接可数名词单数,compare的名词形式是comparison。故填comparison。
此处为“介词+关系代词”引导的定语从句,先行词为the conversation,且a direct response to sth. 故填to。
故填what。

First, we Chinese people are used to greeting each other with head nodding, smiles, hand shaking and so on.
I’d seen Kim several times on the campus before. She was one of those girls who would shine wherever they went, while I was such a shy boy that I would be very happy to be left alone. At least, I thought so.
One night, there was a dancing party at the stadium, and I decided to get away from study for a moment. I arrived late and took a seat at the back of the room on purpose. My classmates, who sat near the stage, didn’t notice me. I told myself to hang out for just fifteen minutes and then go back to study.
Suddenly, I heard a laugh. Then I saw her. She was sitting among them. I moved my chair a little to the left, so I could have a better view of her. I imagined myself walking up to her and asking her to dance.
“What would she say? Would she just laugh or simply look right through me?” I wondered.
At that moment, she turned toward the back of the room-her eyes searching as if she’d felt my thoughts on her. My face became bright red when she saw me. I saw her whisper something to one of my classmates, and then she got up and came toward me.
For a moment, my heart began to race. It jumped so violently that I was sure she could see my shirt moving. I looked over my shoulder and saw the “Restroom” sign and decided to hide.
“Hey, Rob, what are you doing back here all by yourself?” she said, smiling as if we’d known each other all our lives.
I looked up, and she was standing right in front of me. I swallowed hard. She pulled out a chair and sat down at my table.
“How’d you know my name?” I finally managed to ask.
“I asked around,” she said with her dancing brown eyes. “I always make a point of knowing the names of all the smart guys on campus.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
My face became redder.

Since then, I have changed.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph l:
My face became redder. I’m sure she noticed, but she didn’t mention it. She took a drink and began to tell me all about herself: her favorite movies, her dreams and disappointments. Fifteen minutes turned into a half hour, and an hour became two. We talked and laughed like old friends. There were people all around and a band playing somewhere in front of us, but we’d slipped into our own world — one where a new friendship was being born.
Paragraph 2:
Since then, I have changed. Whenever I am at a party, I am always on the lookout for the strangers who might feel a little out of place, a little left out. I can recognize myself in those shy souls, and then I think of Kim. What would she do in a situation like this? Then I will walk over and say hello warmly. I have found out it is not so difficult to reach out for a new friendship.

①喝点饮料:take a drink/have a drink
②开始:begin/start
③留意某人:be on the lookout for sb./keep a lookout for sb.

A Poster Competition Inspired by Chimpanzee
Chimpanzee is set deep in the forests of Africa and it tells the true story of Oscar, a young chimp (黑猩猩) who is naturally curious and playful. Now Film Education invites students aged 5 — 11 to make their own Earth Day poster inspired by the film.
About the Competition
This activity gives students the chance to celebrate Earth Day in an unusual way — by creating a poster that shows the amazing settings and wildlife of their local area.
Prizes
·The winning poster to be printed and designed by professionals, and then displayed in CineWorld cinemas across the UK.
·£1,000 for the school
·A preview screening for the class of the winner
Poster
·Start by looking carefully at the Chimpanzee poster available here for ideas.
·Draw or create pictures of your local natural environment to be included in your poster — this could be your school grounds or the local park or beauty spot. It could even be your favourite tree.
·Collect a selection of these images.
·Create a “rough edit” by placing your chosen images on a blank piece of paper. Decide on the most impactful design.
·Once you’re happy with your poster, create your final version for submission (提交).
Rules
·Your aim is to make people aware of Earth Day, on April 22.
·You can use anything you like to create your poster: drawings, paintings, digitally created images or photographs of your local natural area.
·The size of your poster can be A4 or A3.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
