Living Fully in the Math World
Wang Hong, a reserved mathematician wearing tortoiseshell glasses, rewrote global math history recently. She became the third woman worldwide and the first Chinese woman to win the Fields Medal, widely regarded as the Nobel Prize for mathematics.
Wang spent her childhood in Guilin in the 1990s. Her parents were both schoolteachers, yet they never burdened her with academic pressure. She enjoyed reading storybooks, playing ball games and walking around Guilin’s scenic hills with her family. Even with various hobbies, math shone brightest. She finished all exercises in new textbooks before each semester and bought extra math books to solve all problems. She showed remarkable natural talent for math from an early age. At six, she solved a tricky geometry brainteaser faster than her math-teacher father. She loved math for its permanence.
In middle school, Wang set her sights on majoring in mathematics at Peking University, but later failed to get the only provincial math admission spot and entered Peking University as an earth sciences student. Encouraged by her professor, she transferred to the math department, but hesitated between analysis and algebra for long. Her father then casually said analysis was easier than algebra. Still, determined not to let others’ casual remarks shape her final decision, Wang settled on algebra as her research focus, refusing to be swayed by outside opinions.
In 2011, Wang pursued further study at France’s École Polytechnique without knowing French. She overcame language difficulties and once tried architecture for one semester, but soon returned to math research. She stopped worrying about her ability and kept learning earnestly.
Following Wang Hong’s award, a heart-warming scene circulated in news reports: her French supervisor Professor Lefèvre stood by the doorway, watching her academic sharing session lovingly, with great relief and kindness. In his high praise for Wang Hong, the professor noted that few students could remain calm in the face of setbacks as she did. By winning the 2026 Fields Medal, she has proved that constant devotion can turn mathematical dreams into reality, blazing a trail for female researchers in mathematics.
4. What can we learn about Wang Hong as a child?
A. She was the brightest girl from an early age.
B. She displayed an exceptional inborn gift for math.
C. Her outdoor hobbies prevented her from focusing on math.
D. She worked out math problems under her parents’ pressure.
5. Why did Wang finally choose algebra as her research focus?
A. A tutor suggested algebra suited her strengths.
B. Algebra was less difficult than analysis.
C. She stuck to independent judgment.
D. She had deep passion for algebra.
6. Which words best describe Wang Hong?
A. Determined and persistent. B. Outgoing and sociable.
C. Creative and modest. D. Sensitive and hesitant.
7. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A science fiction. B. Her autobiography.
C. Daily newspaper. D. An academic journal.

For many years, scientists believed that the adult brain was an unchanging organ. According to this view, once the brain reached its full developmental potential in early adulthood, its neural connections were fixed. This view held that the brain, like a muscle that reaches its maximum size, could not adapt or change after a certain point. However, the discovery of neuroplasticity (神经可塑性) has fundamentally altered our understanding of the brain. We now know that the brain is a dynamic, ever-changing organ that continues to restructure itself in response to new experiences, learning and challenges.
A landmark study of London taxi drivers provides strong evidence of neuroplasticity in action. Taxi drivers in London must memorize a vast network of streets and landmarks in a test known as “The Knowledge”. Brain scans revealed that the posterior hippocampus — the area of the brain responsible for spatial memory — was significantly larger in these drivers than in the general population. More interestingly, the longer a driver had been on the job, the more pronounced the changes in this area of the brain, suggesting that the brain physically adapts to intense mental activity.
However, neuroplasticity is a double-edged sword. While the brain can be rewired for positive outcomes, it can also be shaped by negative habits. For instance, constant multitasking and excessive consumption of short-form content, such as quick social media videos, can train the brain to have a shorter attention span, making it harder to engage in focused, deep work.
The implications of this discovery are profound. We now know that the brain is not a fixed organ but a changeable one, constantly being influenced by our daily habits and actions. This means we have more agency over our cognitive health than we ever realized. Lifelong learning, mental stimulation, and even unlearning unhealthy habits are not just cultural ideals, but biological necessities for maintaining a resilient, sharp mind throughout life.
8. What was the traditional view of the adult brain?
A. It kept developing throughout one’s life.
B. It remained largely stable after early adulthood.
C. It was highly sensitive to changes in daily routines.
D. It could be physically restructured by intense training.
9. What does the underlined word “pronounced” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Marked. B. Announced. C. Permanent. D. Subtle.
10. Why does the author mention short-form social media videos?
A. To warn readers against new media.
B. To prove short-form content is popular.
C. To demonstrate bad habits can reshape our brain.
D. To illustrate how our brain improves its attention.
11. What does the author emphasize in the last paragraph?
A. People have little control over their own cognitive health.
B. Intellectual development is completely determined by genes.
C. Lifelong learning is more of a cultural ideal than a biological need.
D. People can actively manage their cognitive health through daily habits.
D
Back in the 1970s, psychologist J. P. Guilford conducted a well-known experiment to study creativity known widely as the nine-dot puzzle. He challenged research subjects to connect all nine dots with merely four straight lines, without lifting their pencils off the paper. Most volunteers limited their attempts within the invisible square formed by the dots. Only one fifth of the participants managed to break out of the boundary and extend their lines into the blank space surrounding the dots.
The fact that four fifths of participants were effectively blinded by the boundaries of the square led Guilford to draw a sweeping conclusion: creativity demands people to break conventional limits, or go outside the box. This viewpoint quickly gained massive popularity and went viral. Soon afterwards, specialists focusing on creative ability began teaching business managers this way to think outside the box. The concept became so mainstream that few scholars bothered to test the original experimental data. That was until two separate research groups carried out follow-up tests: Clarke Burnham & Kenneth Davis, and Joseph Alba & Robert Weisberg.
Both research teams adopted identical experimental settings and split volunteers into two groups. The first group received exactly the same requirements as participants in Guilford’s original research. The second group was clearly informed that the valid solution required drawing lines beyond the imaginary square formed by the dots. Guess what? The final result was surprising: merely 25 percent of the second group worked out the puzzle. From a statistical perspective, this tiny 5-percent rise in success rates is insignificant, as this can be attributed to random sampling error.
We can analyze this unexpected outcome further. Successfully finishing this task literally requires participants to step outside the preset boundary. Yet giving clear, explicit guidance brought no improvement to participants’ performance. That is, straightforward and clear instructions to think outside the box did not help. That this advice is useless should effectively have killed off the much widely spread — and therefore, much more dangerous — metaphor that out-of-the-box thinking boosts creativity. After all, this simple follow-up research proved that the popular connection between out-of-bound thinking and creativity is a misconception without solid basis.
12. What did Guilford observe in his nine-dot puzzle experiment?
A. Visual perception. B. Theoretical knowledge.
C. Thinking patterns. D. Practical experience.
13. What was the purpose of the two teams’ follow-up research?
A. To gather supporting evidence. B. To examine the catchy concept.
C. To overturn the original conclusion. D. To popularize Guilford’s viewpoint.
14. Which of the following best characterizes the follow-up experiment?
A. Revealing. B. Complicated. C. Controversial. D. Groundless.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Creative Thinking: A Deadly Trap
B. Puzzle Solving: A Key to Creativity
C. Thinking Outside the Box: A False Link
D. Nine-Dot Puzzle: A Classic Test of Creativity

Many people are concerned about environmental protection. But when it comes to taking practical steps, most people have no idea how to begin. This widespread situation is known as the intention-action gap.
Research shows that over three-quarters of Americans are worried about plastic pollution, yet plenty of them remain uncertain about effective ways to offer help. ___16___
Recent studies indicate that taking practical action — rather than merely talking — is vital for building trust and a sense of community. When people cooperate to solve shared problems, they gain a strong sense of self-assurance and feel more connected to one another. ___17___ A typical example is the Clean Earth Challenge, which encourages people to collect rubbish and record the waste they pick up. Most participants said they grew more confident that individual efforts could bring positive change.
The campaign grew rapidly by cooperating with major environmental organizations and various businesses. ___18___ This figure means roughly 1.2 million pounds of waste are prevented from entering waterways and natural ecosystems. By providing clear, achievable actions, it turns overwhelming environmental worries into manageable daily tasks.
___19___ It aims to reach wider audiences and foster an environmental-care culture. Those hoping to launch similar campaigns can find frameworks and creative ideas online. This method works especially well for businesses wanting staff involved in sustainability projects.

Henry and his grandmother, Elisa Allen, had lived and worked side-by-side on their farm for many years. Diligent and practical, Henry devoted nearly all his energy to grain crops and livestock, struggling to keep the farm running well and ease the burdens of the whole family. Meanwhile, Grandma Elisa poured her spare time and inner warmth into their small garden in front of the farmhouse, with delicate purple violets (紫罗兰) as her greatest comfort amid tiresome farm labor.
Though Henry never disliked his grandmother’s violets, he rarely paid attention to the details of her gardening. Whenever she talked excitedly about pinching buds or protecting young seedlings, he would nod politely yet quickly shift the conversation to farm harvests. Grandma Elisa had long hoped to own several delicate earthen pots or wooden planters for her violets, and she had mentioned her small wish to Henry once or twice before. Yet his mind was always occupied with field work. Unwilling to add more pressure to the hard-working young man, Grandma Elisa never brought it up again, so she had to settle for some old cardboard boxes to hold her seedlings.
One mid-autumn morning, when a stranger passing by stopped to admire her violets and ask about her planting experience with curiosity, she was overjoyed to finally meet someone who appreciated her flowers. For the first time, someone listened carefully to her love for the garden. Overjoyed, Grandma Elisa filled her only clay pot with thriving violet seedlings and gifted them to him, patiently listing tips to help the plants take root and grow.
Later that afternoon, Henry and Grandma Elisa set out for their long-awaited dinner in town, which was a small reward for their months of busy labor. After the nice feast, their car was rolling along the road towards home when Grandma suddenly caught sight of her tender seedlings, already drooping (凋萎) badly, tossed carelessly into roadside weeds, while the empty clay pot had been taken away. All her joy faded instantly. Holding no anger toward the stranger, only grief that her sincere fondness for flowers had been disregarded, she fell silent and did not utter a single word for the rest of the trip.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

B 5. C 6. A 7. C

B 9. A 10. C 11. D
根据文章第一段“For many years, scientists believed that the adult brain was an unchanging organ. According to this view, once the brain reached its full developmental potential in early adulthood, its neural connections were fixed. This view held that the brain, like a muscle that reaches its maximum size. could not adapt or change after a certain point.(多年来,科学家一直认为成年大脑是一个不可改变的器官。根据这一观点,一旦大脑在成年早期达到发育的最高潜力,其神经连接就会固定下来。这种看法认为,大脑就像一块肌肉,一旦达到最大体积,便无法再适应或改变。)”可知,传统观点认为大脑在成年早期后基本保持稳定。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文划线句“More interestingly, the longer a driver had been on the job, the more pronounced the changes in this area of the brain, suggesting that the brain physically adapts to intense mental activity.(更有趣的是,驾驶员在岗位上工作的时间越长,大脑这一区域的变化就越pronunced,这表明大脑会因高强度的心理活动而发生物理上的适应。)”
根据文章第三段“However, neuroplasticity is a double-edged sword. While the brain can be rewired for positive outcomes, it can also be shaped by negative habits. For instance, constant multitasking and excessive consumption of short-form content, such as quick social media videos, can train the brain to have a shorter attention span, making it harder to engage in focused, deep work.(然而,神经可塑性是一把双刃剑。虽然大脑可以被重新编程以实现积极的结果,但也可能受到不良习惯的影响。例如,频繁地同时处理多项任务以及过度消费短视频等短时内容,会训练大脑缩短注意力持续时间,从而使人更难进行专注而深入的工作。)”推知,作者提到短视频是为了说明不良习惯也能重塑大脑。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“This means we have more agency over our cognitive health than we ever realized. Lifelong learning, mental stimulation, and even unlearning unhealthy habits are not just cultural ideals, but biological necessities for maintaining a resilient, sharp mind throughout life.(这意味着我们对自身认知健康拥有比以往任何时候都更大的掌控力。终身学习、精神刺激,甚至摒弃不健康习惯,不仅是文化理想,更是保持一生中头脑坚韧与敏锐的生物学必要条件。)”可推知,最后一段作者强调大脑可塑,人们可通过日常习惯主动管理认知健康。
C 13. B 14. A 15. C
根据第一段中“Back in the 1970s, psychologist J. P. Guilford conducted a well-known experiment to study creativity known widely as the nine-dot puzzle. He challenged research subjects to connect all nine dots with merely four straight lines, without lifting their pencils off the paper. Most volunteers limited their attempts within the invisible square formed by the dots. Only one fifth of the participants managed to break out of the boundary and extend their lines into the blank space surrounding the dots.(早在20世纪70年代,心理学家J. P. Guilford开展了一项著名的创造力研究实验,也就是广为人知的九点谜题实验。他要求实验对象只用四条直线连接全部九个点,且铅笔不能离开纸面。大多数志愿者都把自己的尝试局限在这些圆点所构成的无形方框内。仅有五分之一的受试者能够突破这一边界,将线条延伸到圆点周围的空白区域。)”和第二段中“The fact that four fifths of participants were effectively blinded by the boundaries of the square led Guilford to draw a sweeping conclusion: creativity demands people to break conventional limits, or go outside the box.(五分之四的受试者实际上被方框的边界所束缚,基于这一事实,Guilford得出一个笼统的结论:创造力要求人们打破固有局限,也就是“跳出盒子思考”。)”
根据第二段中“The concept became so mainstream that few scholars bothered to test the original experimental data. That was until two separate research groups carried out follow-up tests: Clarke Burnham & Kenneth Davis, and Joseph Alba & Robert Weisberg.(该理念变得十分主流,几乎没有学者费心去检验原始实验的数据。
通读全文,尤其是根据第四段中“After all, this simple follow‑up research proved that the popular connection between out‑of‑bound thinking and creativity is a misconception without solid basis.(毕竟,这项简单的后续研究证明,跳出边界思考与创造力之间广为人知的联系是没有可靠依据的错误观念。)”

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

Noticing Grandma’s gloomy face, Henry wondered what the matter was.

Early the next morning, Henry came back with something in his hands.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Noticing Grandma’s gloomy face, Henry wondered what the matter was. After gentle inquiry, he finally learned the truth. Grandma’s carefully raised violet seedlings were abandoned and ruined by the stranger, who only took away the clay pot. Sensing her deep sorrow and disappointment, Henry felt overwhelming regret. He realized he had always focused on farm work and ignored Grandma’s small but precious love for violets. He made up his mind to compensate Grandma and fulfill her long-cherished wish.
Early the next morning, Henry came back with something in his hands. He held several exquisite wooden planters and brand-new earthen pots he had bought in town. Without delay, he helped Grandma move the violet seedlings from old cardboard boxes into these fine pots. Looking at the tidy and beautiful planters, Grandma’s eyes lit up with delight. A warm smile returned to her face. From then on, Henry began to spare time accompanying Grandma to tend the violets. He finally understood that true care lies in noticing and treasuring the little happiness of loved ones.
