Arsh Pal started painting when he was very young. At age 8, he began selling his artworks to raise money for charity. Now 16, Arsh is still going strong!
Q: How did you get started?
A: The first painting I sold was to my piano teacher for ten dollars. After that, I reached out to my principal about my goal of raising money by selling my paintings. She offered to have a display of my artworks in the school during parent-teacher conferences. A lot of my paintings were bought by parents and teachers.
Q: How did your project grow?
A: I started getting different chances to display my art at restaurants and art galleries. I also displayed it on social media sites under the name Art by Arsh.
In all, I have donated over $23,000 to different charities, such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Compass to Care, Make-A-Wish Foundation, and Easterseals.
Q: How do you decide what to paint?
A: I like painting landscapes. When my family goes on vacations, we take pictures, and usually I end up painting those pictures. Sometimes, I get orders from people. They tell me what to paint—what size, what colours—and then I paint it and send it to them.
Q: What have you learned through sharing your art?
A: No matter how old you are, you can do something to change the world and bring good to the community. Whenever I pick up a paintbrush, I say to myself, “I know this painting is going to help someone.” That encourages me to keep painting.

Dear Mr Wang,
I’m writing to recommend Sam as the most beautiful student. I think he has many strong qualities for the award.
Sam is very confident. He is not afraid of making a speech in front of many people. He is hard-working. He always works hard to high standards. Sam is also well-organized. He never forgets the things he needs to do. He is very helpful too. He will help us with our lessons if we are absent from school. He likes to help other students by using colours. For example, when people feel sad, he advises them to wear orange because the colour can cheer them up. Moreover, Sam is very modest, and he never shows off.
I think Sam is the most suitable person to be the most beautiful student. I hope that you agree with me.
Yours sincerely,
Tom
