Students are eager to sign up, often just for credits. But the hands-on experience — whether fixing a tire or ironing a shirt — brings practical skills, stress relief, and a deeper respect for all forms of labor. Most courses are optional, but a few stand out as compulsory. Here is a look at what is on offer. Creative Beading Design Offered as a non-compulsory course at the University of International Business and Economics, Creative Beading Design lets students design and make their own jewelry using colorful beads and silk threads. It combines artistic creativity with patience and craftsmanship, offering a perfect way to experience the joy of making something by hand. Class size: 20 students Supply & Demand ratio (1:10) Life Aesthetics Practice Camp At Renmin University of China, this elective course teaches practical life skills with a touch of elegance. Students learn bed-making, clothes ironing, and other household tasks. But it is more than just chores — it is about cultivating a serious and beautiful attitude toward life. Class size: 36 students Supply & Demand ratio (1:3) Cooking Micro-Classroom Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications runs a Cooking Micro-Classroom, an elective course that stands out for combining cooking skills with the exploration of cultural stories behind traditional Chinese dishes like qingtuan (sweet green rice balls). The course is so popular that spots disappear in seconds after registration opens. Class size: 40 students Supply & Demand ratio (1:3) Field Labor Program To boost all-round development, Beijing International Studies University offers a 32-hour compulsory labor course. Besides theory classes, students work in suburban farms ploughing fields, harvesting bamboo fungus and cutting tough eggplant stalks with sickles. Sweating through farm chores, they fully grasp farming hardships, foster a cooperative spirit and develop steady personalities. Class size: 30 students Supply & Demand ratio (1:5) 21. B Danielle McCormick’s path into architecture and historic preservation was shaped by a multicultural childhood. Born in Germany to Filipino parents, she grew up appreciating history in everyday European settings while also witnessing rapid change during visits to the Philippines. These early experiences planted a deep awareness in her that cultural memory can easily disappear if not actively protected. After high school, she moved to the U.S. to study architecture at the New York Institute of Technology. Though she didn’t initially plan to specialize in preservation, she found herself drawn to old buildings and the questions they raised: Why are they built this way? How can we respect history while making room for the future? Graduating during the 2008-09 financial crisis, she faced a difficult job market. Yet the struggle turned into an unexpected opportunity — exposing her to diverse design projects and the historic structures hidden throughout the city. This experience deepened her connection between cultural heritage and professional practice, leading her to earn a master’s degree in historic preservation from Boston Architectural College. Today, McCormick works on projects that bring history to life. One of her most meaningful assignments is the Smithsonian Castle, a 175-year-old building. Investigating its original materials and uncovering hidden details fills her with awe. “It’s like peeling back the layers of an onion,” she says, discovering stories that most people have never seen. Beyond hands-on work, McCormick is actively involved in professional organizations. She serves as secretary of a preservation technology group and co-chair of a historic resources committee. She also speaks for young professionals on Capitol Hill, advocating for supportive policies. She believes such participation benefits both individual careers and the future of preservation. For McCormick, preservation is far-reaching. It honors the cultures and histories that shaped her, and it creates spaces where people can connect, learn, and grow. 24. What influenced McCormick’s career awareness? A. Her college education in New York. B. Her family’s architectural background. C. Her childhood in Germany and the Philippines. D. Her meaningful work on the Smithsonian Castle. 25. How did the financial crisis affect McCormick’s career? A. She returned to the Philippines for further study. B. She gained a doctor’s degree in historic preservation. C. She repaired the damaged parts of the Smithsonian Castle. D. She encountered various design works and heritage buildings. 26. What can be inferred about McCormick from the last two paragraphs? A. She thinks personal identity has little to do with her career. B. She prefers hands-on work over organizational involvement. C. She considers professional engagement essential to the field’s future. D. She believes preservation is merely about protecting historic buildings. 27. Which of the following best describes McCormick? A. Passionate and dedicated. B. Curious and considerate. C. Courageous and thoughtful. D. Creative and committed. C Ginkgo biloba (银杏), a tree species native to China, has long been used in traditional medicine to support memory and brain function. Today, researchers are investigating whether it might help patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) (轻度认知障碍), a condition often considered an early stage of Alzheimer’s disease. A recent study followed 64 patients diagnosed with MCI who also tested positive for amyloid plaques — protein deposits in the brain that are associated with Alzheimer’s. Over 12 months, 42 of these patients received daily doses of Ginkgo biloba extract, while the other 22 received standard cognitive-enhancing drugs. Their cognitive abilities were measured by using several established tests, including the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), which evaluates memory, attention, and language skills. Blood samples were taken at the start and end of the study to measure levels of a biomarker linked to Alzheimer’s progression. The results were striking. After one year, all 42 patients in the Ginkgo group showed improvement or stability in their condition, compared with only 59.1% in the control group. None of the Ginkgo-treated patients developed Alzheimer’s during the study period, whereas 13.6% of the control group did. Those taking Ginkgo also performed significantly better on tests of daily living skills, such as managing finances and using transportation. Blood tests offered further support: levels of the Alzheimer-related biomarker dropped substantially in the Ginkgo group but remained unchanged in the control group. However, the two groups showed no significant differences in emotional or behavioral symptoms. While these findings are encouraging, researchers caution that the study was observational, meaning it cannot prove cause and effect. They emphasize that larger, longer-term studies are needed before Ginkgo biloba can be recommended as a standard treatment. “The results suggest potential benefits, but we are not yet ready to draw firm conclusions,” said one of the lead researchers. For now, the study offers hope — but also a reminder that medical science moves cautiously, demanding solid evidence before embracing new treatments. 28. How was the study conducted? A. By randomly assigning patients to different treatments. B. By tracking two groups of patients over a 12-month period. C. By interviewing patients about their memory conditions. D. By comparing patients with and without Alzheimer’s disease. 29. What can we learn about the control group in the study? A. They showed little improvement in daily living skills. B. They hardly received medical treatment during the 12 months. C. They were less likely to develop Alzheimer’s than the Ginkgo group. D. They did not show significant reduction in the Alzheimer-related biomarker. 30. What’s the researchers’ attitude toward Ginkgo for MCI? A. Enthusiastic but cautious. B. Doubtful and negative. C. Optimistic but overconfident. D. Uninterested and neutral. 31. What is the main purpose of the text? A. To introduce a traditional Chinese herb and its history. B. To compare Ginkgo with standard cognitive-enhancing drugs. C. To persuade readers to use Ginkgo as standard Alzheimer’s treatment. D. To present study findings on Ginkgo for MCI and urge more research. D In recent years, AI (artificial intelligence) has made remarkable progress in protecting ecosystems — from tracking salmon in the Pacific Northwest to predicting deforestation through sound analysis. Yet these AI tools have long been limited by a critical bottleneck: their application has been restricted by the need for continuous electricity, network access, and expensive field sampling in distant habitats. Now, Project SPARROW is breaking through these barriers, redefining how technology safeguards biodiversity. Developed by a large company’s AI for Good Lab and released online in May 2026, SPARROW is not just a software system but a complete hardware solution. Its name stands for Solar-Powered Acoustic and Remote Recording Observation Watch. Each SPARROW device combines a low-power processor with visual, acoustic, and environmental sensors, running AI models directly on the device. Powered by solar energy and connected via satellite, the system can operate 24/7 in extreme environments without any human intervention. What makes SPARROW revolutionary is its intelligent design. The device manages its own power supply, recording data offline and syncing (同步) automatically when connectivity returns. This means researchers no longer need to travel for days through rough land just to collect memory cards from wildlife cameras — a process that once took months can now be completed in hours. The system’s real-world performance is impressive. Within just 190 days of deployment (部署) across Colombia, Peru, Tanzania and the United States, SPARROW autonomously collected over two million images and sound recordings, showing reliable real-time species classification. In Washington state’s Olympic Peninsula, the device is being tested to locate the elusive Pacific marten — a species that biologists could previously only study by collecting data once a year. Perhaps most importantly, SPARROW is designed for accessibility. The company has made all its technology free to use, including software, hardware plans and printable components, allowing conservationists worldwide to build their own units at low cost. By eliminating technical and financial barriers, SPARROW represents a major step toward the “Internet of Living Things” — an intelligent, connected network for monitoring life on Earth. As wildlife declines at alarming rates, such innovation may prove essential to protecting our planet’s natural heritage. 32. What’s the challenge of traditional AI tools in ecosystem protection? A. They failed to identify species in real time. B. They required power, the Internet and costly data. C. They could not operate without human support. D. They were too expensive for most conservationists. 33. How can SPARROW keep working continuously in extreme environments? A. By applying built-in AI models and solar-powered battery. B. By uploading all collected data to the cloud in real time. C. By combining a hardware design with an energy-autonomous system. D. By allowing researchers to collect data without ever visiting the site. 34. What does the underlined word “elusive” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Hard-to-find. B. Hard-to-control. C. Easy-to-spot. D. Easy-to-identify. 35. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. AI: The Hidden Cost of Protecting Nature B. AI: A Powerful Tool for Monitoring Wildlife C. While an occasional late night may not cause immediate harm, regularly going to bed late can quietly damage your health over time. Poor sleep patterns disrupt your biological clock, affecting hormone (激素) balance, metabolism (新陈代谢), and brain function. Many young people ignore these warnings until problems appear. ____36____ Weight gain and metabolic disruption Sleeping late disturbs hormones that control hunger, such as ghrelin and leptin. When these hormones are out of balance, you crave more high-calorie foods. ____37____ Late nights slow metabolism, making weight gain easier, especially around your belly. This kind of gain is often linked to other health issues. Heart health concerns Lack of sleep puts pressure on your heart and blood vessels. Studies have linked late nights to high blood pressure and increased risk of heart disease. ____38____ Good-quality sleep helps regulate heart rate and reduce inflammation, protecting your heart. Mental health impacts Sleep loss affects your brain. It can make you feel anxious, irritable, and unable to focus on tasks. ____39____ Over time, these may develop into depression, making it harder to maintain a normal routine. The worst floods in the region’s history had killed over 120 people and forced hundreds of thousands to leave their homes. Entire neighborhoods looked as if swallowed by a river. For days, we had been rescuing people from rooftops and trees. We were exhausted, but we kept going. Then came an unexpected call. A news helicopter had seen a horse stuck on a rooftop nearby. The image went viral, and the horse was named Caramelo for his caramel-colored (焦糖色) coat. People across the nation cried out for his rescue, with posts flooding the Internet. I gathered my team. “We have to try,” I told them. But it wouldn’t be easy. The horse had been standing on slippery roof tiles for days, surrounded by deep, muddy water. He was weak and barely able to stand. The rooftop was mostly under water, so reaching him was tricky. We loaded our rubber boats and set out. When we reached the house, I saw Caramelo for the first time. He looked at me with wide, scared eyes. His body was shaking, and he seemed to be holding on by willpower alone. Carefully, we climbed onto the unstable roof. Caramelo was too weak to resist as we gently calmed him. Then came the hardest part — moving his 350-kilogram body onto the boat without letting him slide into the water. We worked together, breathing heavily, fighting against the rain and wind. Finally, we placed him safely on the boat. As we slowly made our way back, I kept my hand on his neck, feeling his heartbeat grow steadier. The rescue was shown live on television, and people across Brazil cheered. When we reached the shore, doctors rushed to check on him. He opened his eyes and looked at me. I smiled and patted him. “You’re safe now,” I whispered. Days later, I visited Caramelo at the animal hospital. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As dusk fell, I headed for the hospital gate when a voice called me. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2027届8月素养训练 英 语 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段录音。 How much should the man pay? 24. B 29. D 30. A 31. 根据第二段“Over 12 months, 42 of these patients received daily doses of Ginkgo biloba extract, while the other 22 received standard cognitive-enhancing drugs.(在12个月的时间里,这些患者中的42人每天服用银杏叶提取物,而另外22人接受标准的认知增强药物。)” 根据第四段“Blood tests offered further support: levels of the Alzheimer-related biomarker dropped substantially in the Ginkgo group but remained unchanged in the control group.(血液检测提供了进一步的支持:银杏组中阿尔茨海默症相关生物标志物的水平大幅下降,但在对照组中保持不变。)” 根据第五段“While these findings are encouraging, researchers caution that the study was observational, meaning it cannot prove cause and effect. (虽然这些发现令人鼓舞,但研究人员警告说,这项研究是观察性的,这意味着它不能证明因果关系。他们强调,在银杏叶被推荐为标准化治疗之前,需要进行更大规模、更长期的研究。一位首席研究人员说:“结果表明有潜在的好处,但我们还没有准备好得出确切的结论。”)”可知,研究人员认为结果有希望但谨慎,态度是积极但谨慎的。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“For now, the study offers hope — but also a reminder that medical science moves cautiously, demanding solid evidence before embracing new treatments. SPARROW: The Solar-Powered Solution to Conservation D. SPARROW: A Breakthrough in Conservation Technology 【答案】32. B 33. C 34. A 35. 根据第一段中“Yet these AI tools have long been limited by a critical bottleneck: their application has been restricted by the need for continuous electricity, network access, and expensive field sampling in distant habitats.(然而这些AI工具长期受关键瓶颈限制:它们的应用受限于偏远栖息地对持续电力、网络接入和昂贵野外采样的需求。)” 根据第二段中“Each SPARROW device combines a low-power processor with visual, acoustic, and environmental sensors, running AI models directly on the device. Powered by solar energy and connected via satellite, the system can operate 24/7 in extreme environments without any human intervention.(每台SPARROW设备都集成了低功耗处理器与视觉、声学、环境传感器,可直接在设备端运行AI模型。该系统依靠太阳能供电、通过卫星联网,能在极端环境下无需任何人工干预实现全天候不间断运行。)”可知,SPARROW通过结合硬件设计与能源自主系统,实现极端环境下的持续运转。 【34题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第四段中“In Washington state’s Olympic Peninsula, the device is being tested to locate the elusive Pacific marten — a species that biologists could previously only study by collecting data once a year.(在华盛顿州的奥林匹克半岛,该设备正用于定位elusive太平洋貂——此前生物学家只能通过每年一次的数据采集来研究这一物种。)” “SPARROW: A Breakthrough in Conservation Technology(SPARROW:生态保护技术领域的一项突破)”符合题意。 The Hidden Dangers of Staying Up Late Staying up late has become common for work, study, or entertainment. Chronic fatigue and reduced energy ____40____ Caffeine and other stimulants may offer temporary relief, but they cannot replace deep, restorative sleep. People who stay up late often feel constantly tired, less productive, and physically drained. In contrast, a consistent sleep schedule allows the body to repair cells, strengthen immunity, and restore energy more effectively. Without quality sleep, even a healthy diet and regular exercise cannot fully protect your health. A. This puts great strain on your heart. B. This makes appetite harder to control. C. Sometimes, a short nap helps make up for lost sleep. D. Here are some common problems related to sleep loss. E. Breaking these habits, however, is easier said than done. F. A regular sleep schedule is essential for restoring energy. G. Such emotional struggles are often overlooked until they become severe. D 37. B 38. A 39. G 40. 【36题详解】 根据上文“Staying up late has become common for work, study, or entertainment. While an occasional late night may not cause immediate harm, regularly going to bed late can quietly damage your health over time. 【37题详解】 根据前文“Sleeping late disturbs hormones that control hunger, such as ghrelin and leptin. When these hormones are out of balance, you crave more high-calorie foods. 【38题详解】 根据前文“Lack of sleep puts pressure on your heart and blood vessels. Studies have linked late nights to high blood pressure and increased risk of heart disease. (睡眠不足会给心脏和血管带来压力。研究表明,熬夜与高血压以及心脏病风险增加有关。)”可知,前文阐述缺觉给心血管带来压力,并与高血压和心脏病风险相关;后文“Good-quality sleep helps regulate heart rate and reduce inflammation, protecting your heart. (优质睡眠有助于调节心率并减少炎症,保护心脏健康。)”从正面说明优质睡眠对心脏的保护作用。A选项“This puts great strain on your heart(这给心脏带来巨大负担)”是对前文“pressure”“high blood pressure”“risk of heart disease”等负面影响的进一步总结和强化,同时与后文“protecting your heart”形成对比,起到承上启下的作用。 【39题详解】 根据前文“Sleep loss affects your brain. It can make you feel anxious, irritable, and unable to focus on tasks.(睡眠不足会影响你的大脑,使你感到焦虑、易怒,并难以集中注意力。) ”可知,前文列举睡眠不足导致的短期精神症状——焦虑、易怒、注意力不集中;后文“Over time, these may develop into depression, making it harder to maintain a normal routine. (随着时间的推移,这些情况可能会发展成抑郁症,从而更难维持正常的生活作息。)”说明这些短期症状若持续可能发展为更严重的抑郁症。G选项“Such emotional struggles are often overlooked until they become severe(这些心理困扰常常被忽视, 直到变得严重)”中“Such emotional struggles”指代前文的焦虑、易怒等短期症状, “until they become severe”与后文“develop into depression”紧密呼应,说明问题从被忽视到恶化的过程,逻辑连贯、过渡自然。 【40题详解】 根据本段小标题“Chronic fatigue and reduced energy(慢性疲劳和精力下降)”以及下文“Caffeine and other stimulants may offer temporary relief, but they cannot replace deep, restorative sleep. People who stay up late often feel constantly tired, less productive, and physically drained.(咖啡因和其他兴奋剂可能带来暂时的缓解,但无法替代深度且具有恢复作用的睡眠。经常熬夜的人常常感到持续疲惫、工作效率降低,并且身体上也感到精疲力尽。) ”可知,下文描述长期熬夜导致慢性疲劳的表现 (依赖咖啡因、持续疲倦、效率低下) ;后文“In contrast, a consistent sleep schedule allows the body to repair cells, strengthen immunity, and restore energy more effectively. Rehan Staton’s extraordinary journey from a garbage collector to a Harvard Law graduate perfectly shows the power of perseverance and kindness. I was a firefighter leading a rescue team in Southern Brazil. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】例文 Paragraph 1: Days later, I visited Caramelo at the animal hospital. Walking into the treatment room, I saw him lift his head and let out a soft sound. Recovering well, he had gained strength and no longer shook. I held out my hand. As my fingers gently touched his nose, he took a slow, steady breath, suggesting that he recognized me. Caramelo rubbed against my palm, his eyes calm and gentle. Never had I felt such a wave of emotion. He had become a symbol of hope for a suffering nation. When I turned to leave, he watched me to the door, as if thanking me. I promised never to forget him. Paragraph 2: As dusk fell, I headed for the hospital gate when a voice called me. Turning around, I saw a group of local people holding a banner that read “Thank You, Heroes!” They handed me a flower, their eyes shining with admiration. Flooded with memories, I thought about everything we had been through. I could still picture his terrified eyes slowly softening as Caramelo realized we were there to help. It was not just a rescue but a reminder of why I had become a firefighter. What matters in the end is compassion and courage. Caramelo taught me something important: no matter how small or large, every life counts, and hope is always worth fighting for. 词汇激活 行为类 ①走进:walk into/enter ②伸出手:hold out one’s hand/stretch out one’s hand 情绪类 ①害怕的、恐惧的:terrified/frightened ②勇气、胆量:courage/bravery 【点睛】【高分句型1】As my fingers gently touched his nose, he took a slow, steady breath, suggesting that he recognized me.
