Membership gets you access to all the free drop-in activities listed in this guide. 1. How much does a two-month recreation pass cost for an adult? A. $96.50. B. $106.50. C. $116.50. D. $155.50. 2. Who is the text intended for? A. Some football trainers. B. Some professional dancers. C. The local residents. D. The activity organizers. 3. Where is the text probably taken from? A. A business record. B. An advertising brochure. C. A travel journal. D. An adventurous plan. B When Shakespeare called a good night’s rest the “cure of hurt minds,” he was really onto something. According to a recent survey, “Most days or every day” in 2020, nearly 15 percent of American adults had trouble falling asleep in the previous month. So you’re a little sleepy — no big deal, right? Wrong. A 1999 article in the medical journal The Lancet showed and decades of research suggest that “sleep debt” can have significant harmful effects on your health. Happiness is the first to suffer. Everyone knows what it feels like to run on insufficient (不足的) sleep — you can be foggy, inattentive, and bad-tempered. A paper published in the journal Health Psychology in 2020 found that the participants without enough sleep experienced a less positive mood when they came across quite ordinary stress, and smaller increases in positive mood from pleasant events. When lacking sleep, people felt annoyed more and easier, and things feel less fun. More seriously, sleep loss can cause clinical depression and anxiety. In 2014, Australian scholars studying young women found that a year of frequent sleep difficulties predicted the onset of depression and anxiety in later years. Some researchers have identified long-time sleep debt as a disease — insufficient sleep syndrome (ISS). Given the reported evidence for how widespread the syndrome is, it might even be classed as an epidemic. Although no study has yet established a connection, it seems reasonable to think about whether the long-term declines in American happiness and increases in social conflicts may be connected to loss of sleep. Whether you are a sleep-deprived student, or workaholic, or just an old-fashioned insomniac (失眠症患者), attending to sleep is a critical strategy for health and happiness. And adjusting this aspect of your life could be one of the best things you do all year. 4. Why does the author mention Shakespeare? A. To show Shakespeare’s wisdom. B. To introduce the topic of sleep loss. C. To highlight a serious health problem. D. To give reported evidence of sleep debt. 5. What does the paper in Health Psychology tell us about insufficient sleep? A. It made people feel negative. B. It led to poor eyesight. C. It caused depression and anxiety. D. It was not worth much concern. 6. What can we learn from paragraph 4? A. Reduction of happiness is linked to sleep loss. B. Long-term lack of sleep is not a disease. C. Sleep debt might affect both individuals and the society. D. Insufficient sleep syndrome is a recognized epidemic. 7. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text? A. To confirm sleep loss is a disease. B. To advocate getting sufficient sleep. C. To tackle widespread sleep problem. D. To prove happiness suffers from sleep debt. C Moments before heading to teach a class, I received a call from my sister: My mother was going into emergency surgery and might not make it through the night. Five minutes later, I stepped in front of 68 MBA students to lecture without missing a beat, and even stayed a few minutes after to answer questions. I held strong until. I got in the car to drive home. That’s when I fell to pieces. I fought to see the road through my tears as I spoke with my travel agent to book the next flight out. My mother pulled through the surgery. My response to my mother’s crisis was in line with my deep, long-term fear of showing weakness or admitting to feeling overwhelmed. As the youngest daughter from a Vietnamese refugee family, showcasing my strength seemed the best way to honor my parents’ and siblings’ acrifices that have given me a better life in the United States. I did not want colleagues to question my capabilities or friends and family to see me as anything less than unshakable. The truth was, I desired to pause, to catch my breath, to simply say, “I’m struggling.” I longed to be weak. I wanted to acknowledge my mistakes, to honor a range of emotions, and to ask for help. Cautiously, I began to reveal some of my struggles to my personal and professional circles, watching closely for reactions. Some looked down on my experience. To my great relief, a few listened without judgment and respected my boundaries and coping process. They offered information about counseling services, legal help, support groups, and hotlines. They helped me see that even professionals in leadership positions can need support. To anyone bearing the weight of constant strength, hear this: True strength isn’t about never hesitating. It’s about having the courage to admit when we’re struggling, reaching out for support, and having the strength to piece ourselves back together and move on. 8. What did the author do after hanging up the phone? A. She drove to look after her mother. B. She quickly booked a flight ticket. C. She hesitated to start her teaching. D. She kept calm and stayed on duty. 9. Why did the author showcase her strength? A. To help her mother make a full recovery. B. To prove she lived a good and happy life. C. To avoid possible doubts over her abilities. D. To give herself an advantage in promotion. 10. How did some people help the author? A. By persuading her to win leaders’ support. B. By convincing her seeking help is a must. C. By listening to her and giving judgments. D. By sharing similar experiences with her. 11. What does the author want to convey in the text? A. Strength does not mean hiding struggles. B. Strength gives us more courage to grow. C. Comparing yourself with others is harmful. D. Worldly labels block personal development. D Animals hibernate (冬眠) to conserve energy during cold weather or when food becomes scarce, slowing their heart rate and dropping their body temperature to as low as 5℃. This is only survivable if their blood continues to flow efficiently and supply oxygen to the body. We already know that red blood cells change shape to fit different pressures and blood vessel sizes. To investigate if something like this happens in the cells of hibernating animals to keep blood flowing, Gerald Kerth at the University of Greifswald in Germany and his colleagues turned to bats. They analyzed hundreds of thousands of red blood cells from common noctule bats, which hibernate and Egyptian fruit bats, which don’t, along with cells from people. The researchers found that for all three species, red blood cells became less flexible and stickier as temperatures dropped from 37℃ to 23℃. But when they cooled the cells even further to 10℃, the bat cells continued this metamorphosis, whereas the human cells did not. Indeed, the bat cells — even those of non-hibernating bats, which probably maintained the evolutionary capacity — continued to become thick, stiff and functional even at very low temperatures. This might be slowing down the cells as they pass through the tiny vessels in the muscles and lungs, making them highly efficient at exchanging gases, like oxygen, throughout the body. “It is like how when you take your time at the supermarket instead of being rushed, you can really fill up your basket,” says Kerth. Exactly how this structural change happens is still unclear, but the team guesses that the mechanical properties of the bat red blood cell membranes (细胞膜) play a key role. The findings suggest that drugs could one day include human red blood cell membranes to imitate the way bat membranes react to the cold, says Kerth. In the more distant future, hibernation could also allow for efficient long-distance space travel, requiring minimal food and other resources while preserving mental health during the journey. “There are benefits of putting humans at low temperature during space flight,” says Kerth. 12. What did Gerald Kerth’s study focus on? A. Blood flow. B. Blood vessel sizes. C. Red blood cells. D. Different pressures. 13. What does the underlined word “metamorphosis” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Change. B. Growth. C. Damage. D. Movement. 14. Why does Kerth mention shopping at a supermarket? A. To prove the evolutionary capacity of bats. B. To show the role of red blood cell membranes. C. To indicate how the structural change happens. D. To illustrate the efficiency of exchanging gases. 15. How will hibernation help long-space travel? A. By offering astronauts resources. B. By speeding up astronauts’ travel. C. By reducing resource consumption. D. By maintaining astronauts’ overall health. Why People May Stare at You You may have experienced the situation where someone staring at you, such as when you’re quietly seated on a bus, only to find that the person across from you is looking at your feet. Did you put on two different shoes? No, you check your shoes — both are the same. ___16___ A new study by Hannah Scott and colleagues from the University of London suggested that people stare because faces, especially the eyes, provide many useful non-verbal clues about a person’s mental state. ___17___ Observing what others look at offers a glimpse into their thoughts. ___18___ The study also found that people may focus on others’ lips during talks. If you feel someone’s gaze on your mouth while speaking, it’s likely not an indication of romantic interest, but rather that they might not hear you well. Similarly, people may look at your hands when you gesture. As they may be trying to understand your actions when you are talking or performing a task. The study showed that people tend to direct their gaze at the part of the body that provides the most information. ___19___ They get the audience to focus on their faces while performing hand tricks. This technique helps switch attention from their hands during card tricks or coin magic. Scott’s study concluded that people are not naturally biased to focus on someone’s face. Instead, they are drawn to the body parts that provide the most relevant information. ___20___ But when someone is performing a manual task, it’s the hands that draw the gaze. This also explains why magicians often talk to engage their audience’s attention on their faces while performing tricks with their hands. A. So, what causes such stares? B. But it’s not just eyes that draw stares. C. The eyes, contain socially relevant information. D. This explains how magicians apply misdirection. E. If someone is speaking, the eyes attract attention. F. Sometimes, such intense stares can make us feel uneasy. G. The mother was a single woman who had been feeling a great deal of anger and bitterness due to her financial and psychological problem, causing her emotions to be unpredictable. Occasionally, she may not pay enough attention to her son or couldn’t respond to his requirements timely. Sometimes, she would even pour her negative emotions onto her child, which made him feel helpless. In fact, this child is a very outstanding and caring boy. That day, the mother directed her anger towards her child again because of some small matter. Although the child did not resist, the mother still drove the child out of the house, slammed the door shut and left the child outside to reflect (反省). It was when the mother became calm and a little regretful that she opened her door and found her child missing. Anxious and scared, she searched everywhere, but the child was nowhere to be found. Her anxiety was gradually increasing. The worried mother thought of seeking help from the police. Quickly, she went to the police station and explained the situation to the officer on duty. The police officer explained that, as a general rule, they couldn’t file a case for a missing child within the first 24 hours. However, they could provide assistance in other ways, such as posting the child’s photo on social media platforms to expand the search area. After expressing gratitude for the police officer’s kindness, the mother continued searching for her child. Despite trying various methods, the mother still couldn’t find the child. Unexpectedly, the child was wandering in the streets, he felt lost and alone, not knowing where to go or what to do. He felt the tears forming in his eyes but refused to let them down. He didn’t want to show weakness in front of anyone, and it made him feel even more alone. Exhausted and hungry, the child kept walking aimlessly until he finally came across a bench along the street. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Soon after, the mother arrived hurriedly. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 江苏省扬州中学联培部2024-2025学年高二下期末考试 英语 2025.6 满分:150分 考试时间:120分钟 第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分) 第一节(共15小题,每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A,B,C,D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 A Looking for something new and exciting — a fun activity to try, a place to hang out or a chance to develop valuable skills and meet new friends? Who is the text intended for? A. Some football trainers. B. Some professional dancers. C. The local residents. D. The activity organizers. 3. Where is the text probably taken from? A. A business record. B. An advertising brochure. C. A travel journal. D. An adventurous plan. B 2. C 3. 根据DROP-IN ADMISSIONS & PASSES部分中“Adult 19-59yrs”的收费标准,“1month $58.25”,“Each extra month $48.25”。 根据第二段“Recreation Surrey offers a wide range of exciting recreation, sports and leadership opportunities, unique spaces and events to the local people.(萨里娱乐中心为当地居民提供了各种各样令人兴奋的娱乐、体育和领导力机会,独特的空间和活动。)” 文章开篇提出“Looking for something new and exciting—a fun activity to try, a place to hang out or a chance to develop valuable skills and meet new friends?(在寻找一些新鲜刺激的东西 —— 一个可以尝试的有趣活动,一个可以闲逛的地方,或者一个发展有价值的技能并结识新朋友的机会?)”,接着介绍了萨里娱乐中心提供的各种娱乐、体育和领导力机会,以及入场券和通行证的收费标准、活动项目等信息,目的是吸引人们参与这些活动。 B When Shakespeare called a good night’s rest the “cure of hurt minds,” he was really onto something. According to a recent survey, “Most days or every day” in 2020, nearly 15 percent of American adults had trouble falling asleep in the previous month. So you’re a little sleepy — no big deal, right? And adjusting this aspect of your life could be one of the best things you do all year. 4. Why does the author mention Shakespeare? A. To show Shakespeare’s wisdom. 根据第一段“When Shakespeare called a good night’s rest the ‘cure of hurt minds,’ he was really onto something. According to a recent survey, ‘Most days or every day’ in 2020, nearly 15 percent of American adults had trouble falling asleep in the previous month. So you’re a little sleepy—no big deal, right? Wrong. A 1999 article in the medical journal The Lancet showed and decades of research suggest that ‘sleep debt’ can have significant harmful effects on your health. 根据第二段中“A paper published in the journal Health Psychology in 2020 found that the participants without enough sleep experienced a less positive mood when they came across quite ordinary stress, and smaller increases in positive mood from pleasant events. When lacking sleep, people felt annoyed more and easier, and things feel less fun.( 2020年发表在《健康心理学》期刊上的一篇论文发现,睡眠不足的参与者在遇到相当普通的压力时,积极情绪的增加幅度较小,而在愉快的事件中,积极情绪的增加幅度也较小。当睡眠不足时,人们更容易感到烦恼,事情也不那么有趣)”可知,《健康心理学》上的论文告诉我们,睡眠不足让人们感到消极。故选A项。 根据第四段“Some researchers have identified long-time sleep debt as a disease—insufficient sleep syndrome (ISS). Given the reported evidence for how widespread the syndrome is, it might even be classed as an epidemic. Although no study has yet established a connection, it seems reasonable to think about whether the long-term declines in American happiness and increases in social conflicts may be connected to loss of sleep. (一些研究人员认为,长期睡眠不足是一种疾病——睡眠不足综合症。考虑到报道的证据表明这种综合症是多么普遍,它甚至可能被归类为一种流行病。虽然还没有研究确定两者之间的联系,但我们有理由去思考,美国人幸福感的长期下降和社会冲突的增加是否与睡眠不足有关)”可推知,我们可以从第4段中了解到,睡眠不足可能影响个人和社会。故选C项。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段“Whether you are a sleep-deprived student, or workaholic, or just an old-fashioned insomniac (失眠症患者), attending to sleep is a critical strategy for health and happiness. And adjusting this aspect of your life could be one of the best things you do all year. (无论你是一个睡眠不足的学生,还是工作狂,或者只是一个老派的失眠症患者,注意睡眠都是健康和幸福的关键策略。调整你生活的这一方面可能是你一年中做的最好的事情之一)”可推知,作者写这篇文章的目的是提倡充足的睡眠。故选B项。 C Moments before heading to teach a class, I received a call from my sister: My mother was going into emergency surgery and might not make it through the night. Five minutes later, I stepped in front of 68 MBA students to lecture without missing a beat, and even stayed a few minutes after to answer questions. 根据第二段中的句子“As the youngest daughter from a Vietnamese refugee family, showcasing my strength seemed the best way to honor my parents’ and siblings’s acrifices that have given me a better life in the United States. I did not want colleagues to question my capabilities or friends and family to see me as anything less than unshakable. C 13. A 14. D 15. 由文章第二段中“We already know that red blood cells change shape to fit different pressures and blood vessel sizes. To investigate if something like this happens in the cells of hibernating animals to keep blood flowing, Gerald Kerth at the University of Greifswald in Germany and his colleagues turned to bats. (我们已经知道红细胞会改变形状以适应不同的压力和血管大小。为了调查冬眠动物的细胞中是否发生了类似的事情以保持血液流动,德国格赖夫斯瓦尔德大学的杰拉尔德·克思和他的同事们转而研究蝙蝠)”可知,因此,杰拉尔德·克思的研究重点是红细胞。故选C。 【13题详解】 词句猜测题。由第三段“The researchers found that for all three species, red blood cells became less flexible and stickier as temperatures dropped from 37℃ to 23℃. But when they cooled the cells even further to 10℃, the bat cells continued this metamorphosis, whereas the human cells did not. 故选A。 由倒数第三段中“This might be slowing down the cells as they pass through the tiny vessels in the muscles and lungs, making them highly efficient at exchanging gases, like oxygen, throughout the body. (这可能会使细胞在通过肌肉和肺部的微小血管时速度减慢,从而使它们在全身高效地进行气体交换,比如氧气交换)”和倒数第二段中““It is like how when you take your time at the supermarket instead of being rushed, you can really fill up your basket,” says Kerth. (克思说:“这就好比你在超市不慌不忙,而不是匆匆忙忙,这样你就能真正装满你的购物篮。” )”可知,克思提到在超市购物是为了说明气体交换的效率。故选D。 【15题详解】 细节理解题。由最后一段中“In the more distant future, hibernation could also allow for efficient long-distance space travel, requiring minimal food and other resources while preserving mental health during the journey. (在更遥远的未来,冬眠还有可能实现高效的长途太空旅行,在旅途中只需极少的食物和其他资源,同时还能保持心理健康)”可知,冬眠可以通过减少资源消耗来帮助长途太空旅行。故选C。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下列短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Why People May Stare at You You may have experienced the situation where someone staring at you, such as when you’re quietly seated on a bus, only to find that the person across from you is looking at your feet. G. The way people talk can also attract stares during conversations. A 17. C 18. B 19. D 20. 【16题详解】 根据上文“You may have experienced the situation where someone staring at you, such as when you’re quietly seated on a bus, only to find that the person across from you is looking at your feet. Did you put on two different shoes? No, you check your shoes — both are the same.(你可能经历过有人盯着你看的情况,比如当你安静地坐在公共汽车上时,却发现对面的人在看你的脚。你穿了两只不同的鞋吗?不,你检查你的鞋子——两者是一样的)”结合下文解释凝视的原因可知,本句为过渡句,引出后文人们喜欢凝视的原因。故A选项“那么,是什么导致了这样的凝视呢?”符合语境,故选A。 【17题详解】 根据上文“A new study by Hannah Scott and colleagues from the University of London suggested that people stare because faces, especially the eyes, provide many useful non-verbal clues about a person’s mental state.(伦敦大学的汉娜·斯科特及其同事的一项新研究表明,人们之所以盯着别人看,是因为脸,尤其是眼睛,提供了许多关于一个人精神状态的有用的非语言线索)”可知,上文提到人脸提供了一些精神状态的线索,且强调了眼睛包含信息更多,故C选项“眼睛包含与社交相关的信息”符合语境,故选C。 【18题详解】 根据后文“The study also found that people may focus on others’ lips during talks. It was then that a kind delivery young man noticed him and thought of the photo posted on the Internet. He said quietly next to the boy, offering him some delicious food and water. The boy felt comforted by his warmth and kindness. He then asked the boy what had happened. After hearing his story, the man hugged the boy tightly and told him that everything would be okay. The delivery man convinced the boy of his mother’s love towards him and got in touch with his mother after the boy’s agreement. Soon after, the mother arrived hurriedly. As soon as the mother saw her son, she was relieved and grateful to the kind-hearted man. She took her son in her arms, sobbing.
