Most 10-year-olds spend their free time playing video games, but Ernesto Gael Hernandez, from Brownsville, Texas, is busy running his own 3D printing business and dreaming of buying his mom a house someday.
What began as a fun way to make custom keychains for classmates has quickly grown into a successful small business. Based in his home workshop, Ernesto creates various customized items, such as keychains, whistles, can openers and stress-relief toys for people with anxiety and ADHD (多动症).
This idea first took shape several months ago, when he told his mother that he wanted to buy a 3D printer. Instead of simply buying him a machine, she encouraged him to work and save for it himself. He saved $500 from chores to buy his first printer. It was then that he came up with the idea of making money from 3D printing, thus launching his brand, Prestige 3D Labs. He even taught himself to create custom designs by watching online tutorials (教程).
Business has grown fast. He has earned around $1,500 in profit so far and demand became so strong that he partnered with a local Brownsville clothing store called Jungle to help sell his creations. Now, three printers run regularly to keep up with orders coming in.
Despite business success, Ernesto sticks to a tight schedule to balance his business, schoolwork and football training. With printing tasks arranged early in the morning, during school days and before practice, he succeeds in running his business steadily.
For Ernesto’s mother, Samantha Quezada, the business has become more than just a way for her son to earn money. “It’s a little bit stressful, but honestly I enjoy we get to do it together,” Quezada said. “It is part of our quality time.” But for Ernesto, his motivation is surprisingly heartfelt. “I just like doing it because I want to invest in a house for my mom when I grow older,” Ernesto said.
24. What does Ernesto’s 3D printing business mainly do?
A. It prints keychains for classmates. B. It produces daily household items.
C. It creates a range of mood-lifting products. D. It tailors various products to customers’ needs.
25. What inspired Ernesto to start his business?
A. His dream of buying a house for his mother.
B. His experience of saving money to buy the printer.
C. The decision to make keychains for his classmates.
D. The high profit from selling all kinds of small products.
26. Which of the following can best describe Ernesto?
A. Ambitious and organized. B. Caring and generous.
C. Hard-working and humorous. D. Adventurous and creative.
27. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Hard Work Creates a Teen’s Success B. Business Builds Close Family Bonds
C. 3D Skills Open a Whole New World D. 3D Printing Shapes a Teen’s Dream House

Insect-size drones are too small to carry around complex navigation systems. To help tiny autonomous fliers find their way home, researchers are taking their clues from honeybees with the Bee-Nav, described today in Nature.
A honeybee leaving the hive first takes a short learning flight to memorize nearby landmarks, explains the study’s lead author Guido de Croon. As a bee flies away, “it keeps track of the direction and speed of its movement,” de Croon says, in a process called path integration. Because path integration tends to gather tiny measurement errors over time, the insect relies on the memorized landmarks to correct its course as it gets back home.
De Croon and his colleagues copied this workflow. A drone performs a learning flight, capturing scenery with a camera. It trains a neural (神经的) network to map images to homes, creating a safe zone. Using path integration, it returns, if within the zone, the network guides it home.
The Bee-Nav does this using a computer the size of a credit card that runs neural nets with between 3.4 and 42.3 kilobytes (千字节) of memory — thousands of times less than conventional mapping setups use. “What I find especially exciting is how little computation is needed. This is the kind of approach that makes serious outdoor arrangements possible.” says Sarah Bergbreiter, a mechanical engineer.
De Croon’s team is still working out a few challenges for the platform. “Platforms running Bee-Nav will also need local barrier avoidance and planning capability if the environment is crowded or dynamic,” says Sean Humbert, a mechanical engineer at the University of Colorado Boulder, who was not involved in the study.
But even now, de Croon says, the Bee-Nav can make autonomous, outdoor drones smaller and more power-efficient. “We could easily put it on a 50-gram, even 30-gram drone,” de Croon claims. Scaling autonomous drones further down to the size of actual bees, he notes, would require solving other fundamental problems like contracting batteries. “But we hope when these problems are solved in the long term, we will have the intelligence ready to match that,” de Croon says.
28. What is the purpose of the research on Bee-Nav?
A. To copy bees’daily flight workflow. B. To adjust the overall size of micro drones.
C. To facilitate the navigation of tiny drones. D. To improve drones’load-carrying performance.
29. Why does the author describe the bee’s navigation before introducing Bee-Nav?
A. To show how bees learn to fly around their hive.
B. To prove tiny drones have trouble with navigation.
C. To show that bees are more intelligent than drones.
D. To explain the biological inspiration behind the Bee-Nav.
30. What is Sarah Bergbreiter’s attitude towards Bee-Nav?
A. Doubtful. B. Favorable. C. Uncaring. D. Interested.
31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Drones as small as real bees are already widely used outdoors.
B. The navigation technology for tiny drones still needs further tests.
C. Bee-Nav is designed specifically for 30-gram to 50-gram drones.
D. It is tough to make batteries smaller for bee-sized drones currently.

Nick Epley was commuting (通勤) to work at the University of Chicago when he looked across the train and wondered: Why are all these people sitting side by side ignoring each other?
Epley, a professor of behavioral science, thought about how very lonely people are, and he challenged himself to strike up a conversation with the woman sitting next to him. It changed his life — and led him to write the book A Little More Social: How Small Choices Create Unexpected Happiness, Health and Connection.
After reading it, I decided to try the experiment myself. I’ve always been a fairly outgoing person, but the idea of talking to strangers and befriending acquaintances still made me feel anxious. I asked Epley whether he ever felt that fear, too. “I still do sometimes, but it dulls a lot,” Epley said. Of course, it isn’t always advisable to talk to strangers. Epley said you should never do so if you feel unsafe.
But in dozens of studies involving more than 30,000 people, he and other researchers have found that people are happier when they are more social, even if they consider themselves introverts (内向人), or fear that reaching out to another person will be embarrassing.
In one study, Epley found that after having a conversation with a stranger, people predict that a future conversation with another stranger will be more enjoyable. But that effect fades pretty quickly. “It’s not like you go out and have a nice conversation with somebody in the elevator and the anxiety disappears,” Epley said. The main reason people feel uneasy about socializing, he said, is that we focus on the wrong thing. We worry about what we’ll say rather than how we’ll say it. This was certainly true for me.
I worried more about whether I would remember a neighbor’s name than I did about whether I would seem kind. But the research shows that if I’m warm and outgoing, it doesn’t really matter that much what I say. If you’re friendly first, that will probably be returned.
32. What did the conversation with the woman serve as for Nick?
A. A reminder of friendship. B. An inspiration for a book.
C. A source of happiness. D. An introduction to a new world.
33. What does the underlined word “dulls” in paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Weakens. B. Ends. C. Grows. D. Exists.
34. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The research result does not apply to introverts.
B. The positive effect of chatting with strangers lasts forever.
C. People often fail to remember what to say when facing strangers.
D. The author also focused on the wrong thing when talking to strangers.
35. What might the author agree with?
A. One good turn deserves another. B. Loose lips sink ships.
C. A still tongue makes a wise head. D. Action speaks louder than words.

The cold December wind blew against Trevor’s thin coat as he walked along the empty street. His fingers touched a folded (折叠的) two-dollar bill in his pocket, soft and worn at the edges. It was all he had saved from his allowance, hoping to do something good for the sick kids in Primary Children’s Hospital, but visiting hours ended, and the bill stayed folded. The chance never came back.
An old paper on a light post caught his eye. A picture showed cups steaming on a table. “Hot Chocolate Stand,” the words read. “All money goes to Primary Children’s Hospital.” Trevor stopped. He read it twice. The hospital name matched the sign behind him. He felt the chance had come back. He took the paper down and folded it carefully.
The next Saturday, he found the small stand at the street corner. A friendly girl was busy making hot chocolate, her breath white in the cold air. The sweet smell of cocoa and sugar filled the street. A small crowd had gathered, cups in hand, faces warm. Trevor walked closer, the paper in his hand.
A small box on the table said “Donations”. Trevor’s stomach began to make noises. He looked at his two dollars, then at the box. A warm meal, or a warm deed? He pushed the bill back into his pocket. “I saw your poster,” he said. The girl looked up, her eyes tired but kind. “First one’s free, if you help,” she said, handing him a cup. Trevor took it, warming his hands. He spoke softly about the good deed he had wanted to do, and the bill still folded in his pocket.
She listened, nodding, pouring chocolate for the next customer. The line grew longer. The girl moved between the pot and the customers, her hands never still. He looked at the girl, then at the busy stand. “I could help,” he said softly.

M: Yes, I am.
W: Are you still going to talk about different types of art?
M: Well, I was planning to, but there’s so much stuff on the subject that I’m finding it difficult to put it all into one short presentation.
W: Well, there’s a lot to discuss about the different periods in art.
M: That’s a good way to start.
W: Then you can bring in how specific types of art were popular in some periods, like sculptures in the classical period and paintings in the Renaissance period. And how to use a wide variety of media to create modern art nowadays. Just keep it brief, because it’s a large area. There are so many periods and movements in art, and you don’t want to just list them one by one.
M: I agree. Thanks a lot, Isabel.

Good morning, everyone. I hope you’re all feeling OK after the activities last week. I know you’ve all been working hard recently, especially with the wedding last weekend and the trade fair straight after that. And now we have only three days to prepare for the birthday party this weekend.
At the moment, we don’t have exact numbers of guests, and though we usually receive groups of less than fifty, we will have quite a few more than that, but we won’t go over the maximum of 100. So, what time will the event start? Well, the invitation says guests should arrive between 7:30 and 7:45, but our experience is that there are always a few who like to arrive early, so we’ll expect the first people at 7:15. As the numbers are quite large, this will certainly be the case. Food will be served at around 8:30, and then, depending on how long the meal takes, the entertainment will start about two hours later. So, let’s get started on the preparations. I’ll have the detailed assignments sent out within an hour. Thanks, everyone, and let’s make this another memorable celebration.

C 29. D 30. B 31. D

根据第一段“Insect-size drones are too small to carry around complex navigation systems. To help tiny autonomous fliers find their way home, researchers are taking their clues from honeybees with the Bee-Nav, described today in Nature. (昆虫大小的无人机体积太小,无法携带复杂的导航系统。为了帮助微型自主飞行器找到回家的路,研究人员从蜜蜂身上获得线索,研发了Bee-Nav,这在《自然》期刊上有所描述。)”可知,研究Bee-Nav的目的是帮助微型无人机解决导航问题,为微型无人机的导航提供便利。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“A honeybee leaving the hive first takes a short learning flight to memorize nearby landmarks, explains the study’s lead author Guido de Croon. As a bee flies away, “it keeps track of the direction and speed of its movement,” de Croon says, in a process called path integration. Because path integration tends to gather tiny measurement errors over time, the insect relies on the memorized landmarks to correct its course as it gets back home. (该研究的主要作者Guido de Croon解释说,一只离开蜂巢的蜜蜂首先会进行短暂的学习飞行,以记住附近的地标。de Croon说,当蜜蜂飞走时,“它会跟踪自己运动的方向和速度”,这一过程称为路径积分。因为随着时间的推移,路径积分往往会积累微小的测量误差,所以昆虫在回家时依靠记忆中的地标来纠正其路线。)”可知,第二段介绍蜜蜂依靠路径积分结合记忆地标校正路线的导航机制,再根据第三段中“De Croon and his colleagues copied this workflow. (de Croon和他的同事复刻了这一工作流程。)”可推知,作者在介绍Bee-Nav前描述蜜蜂的导航方式,是为了解释Bee-Nav的生物学灵感来源。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段Sarah Bergbreiter的话“What I find especially exciting is how little computation is needed. This is the kind of approach that makes serious outdoor arrangements possible. (让我特别兴奋的是它只需要极少的计算量。这种方法让大规模户外部署成为了可能。)”可知,Sarah对Bee-Nav持支持赞赏的态度。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Scaling autonomous drones further down to the size of actual bees, he notes, would require solving other fundamental problems like contracting batteries. (他指出,要将自主无人机进一步缩小到真实蜜蜂的大小,还需要解决电池小型化这类基础问题。)”可推知,目前给蜜蜂大小的无人机制造体积足够小的电池还是一件很困难的事。
D
B 33. A 34. D 35. A
根据第二段中的“and he challenged himself to strike up a conversation with the woman sitting next to him. It changed his life — and led him to write the book A Little More Social: How Small Choices Create Unexpected Happiness, Health and Connection.(于是他鼓起勇气,主动和坐在身旁的女士攀谈起来。这件事改变了他的生活,还促使他写了《多一点社交:微小选择如何带来意想不到的快乐、健康与联结》这本书。)”可知,这次交谈成为了他撰写该书的灵感来源。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段画线词“dulls”前面的“I asked Epley whether he ever felt that fear, too.(我问Epley是否也曾感到那种恐惧。)”
根据第五段中的“The main reason people feel uneasy about socializing, he said, is that we focus on the wrong thing. We worry about what we’ll say rather than how we’ll say it. This was certainly true for me.(他表示,人们在社交时感到不安的主要原因是我们关注错了重点。我们总担心自己要说什么,却忽略了表达方式。我自己就深有体会。)”可推知,作者本人也同样关注了错误的事情——过分担心谈话内容而非自己的态度。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“If you’re friendly first, that will probably be returned.(如果你先友善待人,那么这种友善很可能会得到回报。)”

The girl looked up, her eyes meeting his. “We need more hands,” she said. Trevor moved behind the table. She passed him a cloth and showed him how to hold the cup, how to pour the chocolate slow and steady. His first try spilled over the edge, but she only smiled and handed him another cup. The steam rose warm against his cold face. Customers came, cups passed, and the box filled with more bills. Trevor’s hands, once still in his pockets, now moved without pause. The two dollars stayed folded, warm in his pocket.
When the last customer left, Trevor dropped his bill into the box. The girl filled a fresh cup. “For the helper,”she said, pressing it into his hands. “But I,” “You gave both.” She nodded at the box, then at the empty street. “The money helps. The hands help more.” He held the cup tight, feeling the warmth spread through his fingers. The chance hadn’t passed. It had simply changed hands. He walked home through the empty street. The December wind still blew, but something inside got warm. The two dollars were gone. But the warmth remained.
