The Admonitions Scroll is considered a milestone in Chinese painting history.
Traditionally attributed to Gu Kaizhi (about AD 345—406), it probably dates to between AD 400 and 700.
This masterpiece shows a poetic text composed by an official Zhang Hua(about AD 232—300) aimed at correcting the behavior of an empress. The Scroll carries inscriptions (题字) by later collectors including the Qianlong emperor (1736—1795). The British Museum purchased the Scroll from Captain Clarence Johnson (1870—1937) who was in Beijing in 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion (1899—1901). Originally a hand scroll, the painting and later inscriptions were separated and mounted onto panels in 1914.
Visiting information

Hand-held photography and video recording (without flash) is allowed in the gallery for private purposes only.

We’ve all heard that ostriches (鸵鸟) bury their heads in the sand when danger approaches. While untrue for the ostriches, it mirrors a common human behavior called “information avoidance” — the active choice to turn away from the freely available information highly relevant to ourselves. But why do we change from naturally curious children into selective information avoiders?
A 2025 study titled “Becoming an Ostrich” explored this. Researchers had children aged 5 to 10 play a game where researchers designed two candy distribution schemes (方案): equal shares for each, or one large share and one small share. Most children chose the latter and claimed the large share. Then, researchers asked whether they would like to know how many candies were left for their partner. The result was interesting. Younger children showed strong curiosity, actively seeking their partner’s information. The older children, however, increasingly chose to avoid it.
Researchers explained as children grow older, they become more concerned with feeling at ease — even if their actions might not be moral. By avoiding their partner’s information, they tend to keep a sense of fairness, or at least appearing fair. This strategy makes it easier to act in satisfying personal interests without feeling guilty. They note that adults routinely employ the same approach in various real-life situations.
Yet avoidance has long-term costs. Skipping health screenings may ease anxiety now, but can risk serious health issues later. Avoiding tough conversations may prevent short term conflict, but will likely trap people in unsatisfying relationships. “By repeatedly avoiding opposing views,” researchers warn, “we build avoidance habits that can harden into rigid thinking patterns over time.”
It’s no wonder researchers refer to this as a fundamental human contradiction: we start out in life as curious explorers, eager as possible to absorb whatever knowledge we can. Yet, somewhere along the way, we learn to stick our heads in the sand like an ostrich. This comfortable escape, nevertheless, can shape our choices and determine how our lives unfold. Recognizing this is the first step toward reclaiming the courageous curiosity that defines our earliest years.
4. How does the author introduce “information avoidance” in Paragraph 1?
A. By using a metaphor. B. By offering statistics.
C. By showing an argument. D. By giving an example.
5. Why did the older children avoid their partner’s information?
A. To maintain a nice self-image.
B. To safeguard others’ interests.
C. To sustain their sense of guilt.
D. To obey the rules of the game.
6. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The consequences of avoidance actions.
B. The ways of forming thinking patterns.
C. The reasons of ignoring opposing views.
D. The health costs of our avoidance habits.
7. What can be a suitable title of the text?
A. Does avoidance bring true happiness?
B. Should we bury our heads like an ostrich?
C. Can we shape our childhood curiosity?
D. Is avoidance a path to greater curiosity?

Many people finish work not just tired but wired. Their minds keep racing, their bodies feel tense, and even in restful moments, they feel a sense of urgency. Conversations replay, unfinished tasks resurface, and the nervous system seems unwilling to power down. This state has become common in modern life, yet it carries real consequences for physical health, especially for those likely to suffer headaches.
Stress is not always harmful. Short bursts of stress can improve focus and performance. Problems arise, however, when stress becomes chronic. The nervous system processes both stress and pain. But when the brain perceives ongoing demands without recovery, it keeps the body in prolonged alertness. During these periods, hormones (激素) such as cortisol and adrenaline remain elevated, when heart rate rises and muscles stay tense. Over time, this disturbs the body’s natural balance and creates conditions for headache disorders to develop or worsen.
Chronic stress acts as both a trigger (诱因) and worsening factor for migraines (偏头痛). The nervous systems of migraine sufferers are more responsive to environmental changes, including sleep variations, hormonal shifts, and stress levels. Persistent stress may increase the frequency and severity of migraine. Muscle tension in the neck and shoulders — a frequent effect of stress — can also cause tension headaches. Extended sitting, sustained concentration, and physical tension during work often lead to tension headaches in the later hours of the day.
Chronic stress also harms sleep quality. Many who feel wired after work struggle to fall or stay asleep. Poor sleep then keeps the stress cycle going, making the brain even more sensitive and increasing the likelihood of headaches the next day. This cycle can be difficult to break, as tiredness reduces toughness and amplifies the sense of being overwhelmed that comes with stress.
Understanding this connection points to practical steps to shift the nervous system out of its activated state. Build small transitions into your day, and take a few minutes to pause between activities. Explore mindfulness-based practices. Techniques such as meditation and focused breathing may retrain the brain to respond to stress with greater flexibility. Besides, medical evaluation can identify underlying causes.
8. How does the author present the issue in paragraph 1?
A. By giving examples. B. By listing typical symptoms.
C. By defining a concept. D. By providing detailed statistics.
9. Why does chronic stress cause headaches?
A. It disturbs sleep patterns. B. It lowers stress sensitivity.
C. It increases muscle relaxation. D. It upsets body balance and tightens muscles.
10. What does the underlined word “amplifies” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Increases. B. Reduces. C. Hides. D. Ignores.
11. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A. To compare headache treatments. B. To criticize modern work culture.
C. To explore stress-headache link and solutions. D. To help people avoid all forms of stress.

Kenyn Boro, a 16-year-old girl, has earned the nickname “the Master” for her command of wushu, or Chinese martial arts. She not only teaches wushu to her peers at school but also coaches her family at home, turning the living room into an improvised training space.
Boro began learning wushu at seven and was the only one to persist in her original beginner group. After nine years of practice, she has won three medals in the Kenya Wushu National Championships since 2021.
Boro’s experiences mirror wushu’s rapid growth in Kenya. In Kiambu County alone, over 4,000 students in 24 public primary schools practice it through clubs set up by the Kenya Kungfu Wushu Federation.
“Kung fu changes children in ways they can’t always describe,” said Ngaruiya Njonge, president of the federation, “If they abandon it, they risk drifting into bad habits! That is why we keep encouraging them to train.”
Njonge, who learned martial arts independently via YouTube after his Chinese-trained coach left, dedicates himself to spreading it nationwide.
Promoting wushu has not been without challenges. Funding shortages and limited training venues often make the work difficult, and there are moments when Njonge considers stopping. Yet he persists, inspired by the transformations he witnesses in his pupils. “Sometimes I think about giving up,” he said, “but my students wake me up. I can see what I’ve taught them in their performances at the tournament. It’s alive.”
Njonge’s efforts to promote wushu have also opened doors to deeper cultural exchanges with China. In September 2025, supported by the Chinese embassy, Njonge accompanied two of his students on a cultural and martial arts exchange trip to China, where they learned tai chi and visited the Shaolin Temple, gaining firsthand experience of the art’s origins and traditions. Inspired by the trip, one of his students, Elvis Munyasya, plans to improve his Chinese skills, which he sees as key to improving his wushu and connecting more closely with Chinese instructors.
12. What earned Kenyn Boro the nickname “the Master”?
A. Her skills in wushu. B. Her learning experience.
C. Her nine years of practice. D. Her winning three medals.
13. What’s the focus of Njonge’s words in paragraph 4?
A. Positive effects of wushu. B. Potential risks of wushu.
C. Kids’ unclear description. D. Children’s unhealthy habits.
14. What does Njonge think of his work of promoting wushu?
A. Tiring and meaningless. B. Tough but well-funded.
C. Challenging but rewarding. D. Smooth and worthwhile.
15. What can we learn about the martial arts exchange trip?
A. It offered access to Chinese cuisine.
B. It was supported by local federations.
C. It inspired links with Chinese coaches.
D. It enriched students’ martial arts knowledge.

At the library, Nate Jasper noticed a sign for the “First Annual Highland Drawing Contest.” It asked for artwork showing the unique beauty of their town. Noticing his interest, the librarian, Ms. Kim, handed him a flyer. “The winning drawings will be displayed right here in the library,” she added.
Sitting on the library steps outside, Nate was lost in thought. He had always loved art. He could never have too many sketchpads (素描本) and crayons. “I have to enter this contest!” he said to himself.
But something troubled him. Years of living in the small town had convinced him that it was a dull place. “There’s nothing special about it — only ordinary farms, animals, and trees!” he frowned. “What will I draw?”
Just then, Briana Williams, a new girl in his class who had just moved from Houston, a large modern city in Texas, walked out. Spotting Nate, she sat down beside him and noticed the flyer. “A drawing contest? That sounds fun!”
“Not really,” Nate sighed. “Trust me, this town is a big bore.”
Briana looked surprised. “Well, everything here may seem boring to you, but to me, it’s all new! I’d love to see more of it. Show me around sometime. And bring your sketchpad — you might find something worth drawing.”
The next Saturday, they wandered down a quiet lane together. Briana stopped beneath a large maple and gazed up in awe. Nate paused beside her. At first, it felt strange to admire a tree he’d passed a hundred times. But as he followed her gaze, the sun was shining through the branches, turning the red and yellow leaves into a sea of burning gold.
“There’s nowhere this quiet and pretty in Houston,” Briana said softly.
Nate felt something clicked in his mind. Highland wasn’t a big bore — he was just too used to it. He began to wonder what other hidden beauty was waiting to be discovered.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Inspired, Nate suggested they visit his Grandpa’s farm.

A 5. A 6. A 7. B

根据第一段中“We’ve all heard that ostriches (鸵鸟) bury their heads in the sand when danger approaches. While untrue for the ostriches, it mirrors a common human behavior called “information avoidance” — the active choice to turn away from the freely available information highly relevant to ourselves.(我们都听说过,当危险来临时,鸵鸟会把头埋在沙子里。虽然这对鸵鸟来说是不真实的,但它反映了一种常见的人类行为,称为“信息回避”——即主动选择避开那些与我们自身高度相关且唾手可得的信息)”可推知,作者通过将人类主动选择回避信息的行为与鸵鸟遇到危险时把头埋进沙子的行为进行类比,从而引出“信息回避”这一概念。故选A项。
根据第三段中“Researchers explained as children grow older, they become more concerned with feeling at ease — even if their actions might not be moral. By avoiding their partner’s information, they tend to keep a sense of fairness, or at least appearing fair. This strategy makes it easier to act in satisfying personal interests without feeling guilty.(研究人员解释称,随着孩子年龄增长,他们更倾向于追求心理舒适——即使其行为可能不符合道德标准。通过回避伙伴的信息,他们试图维持(或至少表现出)公平感。这种策略能让人更容易地在满足个人利益的同时,避免产生愧疚感)”可知,年龄较大的孩子回避伙伴的信息是为了维持一种(至少是表面的)公平感和良好的自我感觉,以避免内疚。故选A项。
根据第四段“Yet avoidance has long-term costs. Skipping health screenings may ease anxiety now, but can risk serious health issues later. Avoiding tough conversations may prevent short term conflict, but will likely trap people in unsatisfying relationships. “By repeatedly avoiding opposing views,” researchers warn, “we build avoidance habits that can harden into rigid thinking patterns over time.”(然而,回避是有长期代价的。跳过健康检查现在可能可以缓解焦虑,但以后可能会面临严重的健康问题。回避艰难的对话可能可以避免短期的冲突,但可能会使人们陷入不满意的关系中。研究人员警告说:“通过反复回避相反的观点,我们会养成回避的习惯,随着时间的推移,这些习惯会变成僵化的思维模式。”)”可知,本段主要讲述了信息回避带来的各种后果。故选A项。
根据最后一段“It’s no wonder researchers refer to this as a fundamental human contradiction: we start out in life as curious explorers, eager as possible to absorb whatever knowledge we can. Yet, somewhere along the way, we learn to stick our heads in the sand like an ostrich. This comfortable escape, nevertheless, can shape our choices and determine how our lives unfold. Recognizing this is the first step toward reclaiming the courageous curiosity that defines our earliest years.(难怪研究人员称这是一个基本的人类矛盾:我们一开始是好奇的探索者,尽可能急切地吸收任何我们能吸收的知识。然而,在人生的某个阶段,我们学会了像鸵鸟一样把头埋进沙子里。然而,这种舒适的逃避可以塑造我们的选择,决定我们生活的展开方式。认识到这一点是重新找回定义我们早年勇敢好奇心的第一步)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要探讨了人们为何会像鸵鸟一样回避信息,以及这种行为带来的后果,最后呼吁人们不要像鸵鸟一样回避信息,要勇敢面对。B项“Should we bury our heads like an ostrich?(我们应该像鸵鸟一样埋头吗?)”

B 9. D 10. A 11. C
根据第一段中“Many people finish work not just tired but wired. Their minds keep racing, their bodies feel tense, and even in restful moments, they feel a sense of urgency. Conversations replay, unfinished tasks resurface, and the nervous system seems unwilling to power down. (许多人下班后不仅疲惫,而且精神紧张。他们思绪不停,身体紧绷,即使在休息时也感到一种紧迫感。对话在脑海中回放,未完成的任务重新浮现,神经系统似乎不愿放松下来。)”可知,作者通过列出典型症状来呈现许多人充满压力这一问题。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Over time, this disturbs the body’s natural balance and creates conditions for headache disorders to develop or worsen. (随着时间推移,这会扰乱身体的自然平衡,从而为头痛障碍的发生或加重创造条件。)”和第三段中“Muscle tension in the neck and shoulders — a frequent effect of stress — can also cause tension headaches. (颈部和肩部的肌肉紧张——压力常见的表现之一——也可能导致紧张性头痛。)”可知,慢性压力会导致头痛是因为它扰乱身体平衡并使肌肉紧张。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词的上文“This cycle can be difficult to break, as tiredness reduces toughness (这个循环很难打破,因为疲劳会降低韧性)”和下文“the sense of being overwhelmed that comes with stress (压力带来的那种被压垮的感觉)”可知,循环难以打破的原因有两点,其中一个是韧性降低,另一个应该是被压垮的感觉被“放大”,画线词与Increases“增加,增强”意思相近。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中“This state has become common in modern life, yet it carries real consequences for physical health, especially for those likely to suffer headaches. (这种状态在现代生活中已十分常见,但它对身体健康确实会产生实际影响,尤其是对容易出现头痛的人群。)”可知,第一段描述许多人充满压力的现象,并引出头痛这一话题,第二至四段主要解释压力与头痛的关联,第五段提出解决方案。因此,作者的目的主要是探索压力与头痛的联系及解决方案。

A 13. A 14. C 15. D

In some US states, gym class is changing. Many schools are focusing on getting students ready for life after high school. They are looking for ways to leave even the least athletic kids with the will and skills to keep moving. For gym teachers, that means less focus on who is best at a sport. It means less rope climbing and dodgeball(躲避球).___16___
A New Model
In one New York school district, there is no “gym” class. ___17___They include dance, self- defense and rock climbing. They include mountain biking, in-line skating, and boating.
“We want our kids…, to be active for life,” said Ron Whitcomb. He manages the physical education, or PE, program for the Victor, New York, school district.
A US law passed in 2015 increased the importance of health and fitness in education. It also gave more funding(资金) to PE programs.
Whitcomb’s program started before that law passed. ___18___Connecticut, Vermont and Michigan are all planning to improve PE’s place in their schools.
Outside the Gym
Tracy Krause teaches PE in Washington State. For a few years, she has taken students fly-fishing and rock climbing. ___19___It combines PE, English, and science into one program. “We want kids to leave with a plan for the future,” Krause said. “I think the same needs to be true about their health.”
Lifelong Skills
In Washington, D. C, all second-graders learn to ride bikes. Fourth- and seventh-graders learn parkour(跑酷). Parkour teaches students to jump, climb and roll in the fastest way they can. Sixth- graders learn how to read a compass. High schoolers swim. ___20___
Teachers hope to keep students liking, not hating, PE. That means finding sports or activities they enjoy.
A. They are also cutting back on team sports.
B. It means more bike riding and outdoor hikes.
C. Other schools are now following his program.
D. Instead there is a list of different fitness classes.
E. The school district’s goal is to teach lifelong skills.
F. She is part of her school’s “Outdoor Academy” program.
G. Kids who are not as athletic sometimes hate playing team sports.
B 17. D 18. C 19. F 20. E
B“It means more bike riding and outdoor hikes.( 这意味着更多的骑自行车和户外徒步旅行。)”
根据后文“They include dance, self- defense and rock climbing. They include mountain biking, in-line skating, and boating.( 其中包括舞蹈、自卫和攀岩。它们包括山地自行车、轮滑和划船。)”可知,这里在对“新式体育课”的课程设置进行解释,且设空句应包含“they”含义,即复数名词。选项 D“ Instead there is a list of different fitness classes(取而代之的是一系列不同的健身课程)”可以看作为对该句的总结,且classes对应后文句中的they,符合语境搭配。故选D项。
根据后文“Connecticut, Vermont and Michigan are all planning to improve PE’s place in their schools.( 康涅狄格州、佛蒙特州和密歇根州都计划提高体育在学校中的地位。)” C“Other schools are now following his program.( 其他学校也在效仿他的做法。)”
根据后文“It combines PE, English, and science into one program.( 它把体育、英语和科学融为一体。)” F“She is part of her school’s “Outdoor Academy” program.”
根据前文内容“In Washington, D. C, all second-graders learn to ride bikes. Fourth- and seventh-graders learn parkour. Parkour teaches students to jump, climb and roll in the fastest way they can. Sixth- graders learn how to read a compass. High schoolers swim.( 在华盛顿特区,所有的二年级学生都学习骑自行车。四年级和七年级学生学习跑酷。跑酷教会学生以最快的速度跳跃、攀爬和翻滚。六年级学生学习如何读指南针。高中生游泳。)”提及教授的技能为ride bikes, parkour, read a compass 和swim,这些技能均为可以受益终生的技能。选项E“The school district’s goal is to teach lifelong skills.( 该学区的目标是教授终身技能。)”
Whitcomb’s program started before that law passed. ___3___Connecticut, Vermont and Michigan are all planning to improve PE’s place in their schools.
C “Other schools are now following his program.”中的代词短语other schools 即为下文中的their schools;his problem即为前文的Whitcomb’s program。

Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share with you an art class I had in a park last Friday.
We were tasked to draw or paint something that impressed us most. Inspired by the fantastic scenery, I decided to create a watercolor painting of the small bridge over the park’s pond, surrounded by blooming flowers.
The entire experience was incredibly refreshing. Being surrounded by nature not only sparked my creativity but also offered a much-needed break from the usual hustle and bustle of school life. I felt a deep sense of peace as I painted.
In a word, it was not just an art class; it was a moment of connection with nature that I truly cherished.
Yours,
Li Hua

Possible Version
Inspired, Nate suggested they visit his Grandpa’s farm. Briana’s eyes lit up, and the two set off right away. When they arrived, Briana gasped, “This is amazing!” Her wonder was infectious — Nate looked around, feeling as if he were seeing the farm for the first time. Golden wheat fields swayed in the breeze like a rolling ocean, fluffy sheep grazing peacefully in the sunlight. He stood there, completely captivated. Then, Briana gently nudged him. “You should draw this, Nate. It’s a perfect scene.” That was it. Nate pulled out his sketchpad immediately, his pencil dancing across the paper. As his painting took shape, he wondered why he had never thought to draw the farm before.Once he looked closely, it really was a fascinating place. By sunset, his sketchpad was filled with lively drawings.
On the day of the award ceremony, the library was crowded. Local residents gathered around, buzzing with anticipation. Nate stood nervously among them, his heart pounding. Ms. Kim stepped onto the stage. “Every drawing captures the unique beauty of our town,” she said warmly, “but one work truly stood out.” She paused, and then announced Nate’s name. He walked up in disbelief, hands trembling as he accepted the award. The audience applauded loudly, and Briana waved at him from the crowd, beaming with pride. Nate stepped back, looking at his winning piece on the wall — a vivid scene of Grandpa’s farm bathed in golden sunlight. A warm smile spread across his face — beauty had always been there, and sometimes all it took was a pair of fresh eyes to see it.
