Paragraph 1:
A few days later,something terrible
happened to Ronny.That afternoon after
school,Ronny was bathing with some of his
new friends in the river happily.Suddenly,he
was stuck in the mud and couldn't get out.He
struggled hard but he was still trapped. He
screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys
who had called Henry a coward got out of the
water as fast as they could. They were so
scared and did not even try to help him.
Paragraph 2:
At that moment,Henry happened to pass by.
He heard the screams and ran to the river as soon
as possible.Seeing Ronny was almost drowned,
Henry took off his clothes immediately and
jumped into the water without any hesitation.
He reached Ronny just as he was sinking the
last time. With great effort, and with much
danger to himself,he brought Ronny to the
shore in time.Henry was happy to help his
friend,though he was extremely tired.

了帮助哥哥走出事故的阴影决定对哥哥所经历的
事故避而不谈,而这对哥哥并没有什么帮助。但后
来作者明白倾听才能真正帮助哥哥走出痛苦。
24.A[推理判断题。根据第一段中的“It said a
boy was hit and his body was thrown 19 yards.
But he wasn't thrown;he was dragged that far

Everlasting Classics,anew programme in
CCTV,has gained great popularity among the
audience, which arouses people's interest in the
protection and promotion of traditional Chinese
culture.
Protecting traditional Chinese culture,from my
perspective,is of great significance.Firstly,it can
help pass down the wisdom of the Chinese people
from generation to generation.Besides,traditional
culture provides a motivation for the constant
development of the country.On a deeper level,it
serves as a stepping stone to the international world.
13
So glorious is traditional Chinese culture that
it deserves carrying forward. The media like TV
and radios can be employed to spread traditional
Chinese culture.Also,launching cultural exchange
campaigns is a good way to make Chinese
civilization known to the world.Besides,observing
traditional festivals helps the culture last forever.
Through these practices,Chinese civilization will
shine across the world.

Paragraph 1:
This was how we spent each Saturday
morning for two years.Young though he was,he
would cherish the time, absorbing knowledge like a
sponge. After our library session,I would bring
him back to my office and give him extra tuition,
helping him catch up with the other children in
class and even top most of the tests.Bit by bit,
Mike was no longer what he used to be.Everyone
described him as energetic,warm-hearted and self-
disciplined when he graduated. For some reason,
Mike left Toronto for another state with his
grandmother while I switched to another school
soon and regretfully I lost his address accidentally.
Paragraph 2:
One day, after we were out of touch for 30
years, there went my doorbell.I opened the door,
only to find Mike, the former street kid, standing
there in his law office uniform.Along with him
were his own teenage son and daughter. His face
lighted with joy,he gave me a warm hug,
explained how he managed to get my address.
Tears of excitement and happiness filled my eyes.
Listening to what he had achieved as a lawyer,I
was so proud of him.He thanked me for showing
him the light and helping him fulfil his potential.
That was another proud moment for me.

I found a police report that had been filed in Florida 17 years before. It said a boy was
hit and his body was thrown 19 yards. But he wasn't thrown;he was dragged that far and
caught in the chains of the truck. It said someone fled the scene, but that someone was my

Alex had just turned 15.This was the day we never spoke about. We thought it would
make a difference in helping him step out of the shadow of that accident. So I didn't bring it
up until one night, when we were 30 and 31,I asked if he ever thought about the day
Jonathan died. But he responded with an unpleasant laugh and a cold silence.
Before the accident,we were inseparable. After the accident,we didn't have words for
any conversation.I was desperate to reconnect and convinced that the only way to do so was
to get as close as I could to that day.

Shoppers obviously fall into several categories. We have all heard of the shopaholic,
for example. It's not unusual for out-of-control shoppers to build up a huge debt-$20,000
or more-by using credit cards, and we often read about people with average jobs, who
have been driven to steal from their employers to pay the bills or satisfy their"addiction".
Recent cases have included a woman who killed herself after being charged with stealing
over 1,000,000 from work.Such sums are usual, but the problem is not.
It is estimated that between 2%and 8%of adults in Britain fit into this category.
According to doctors, shopaholics feel alone and depressed, and they buy things to feel
better. When they find something to buy, there's a feeling of pleasure, but this soon
disappears when they realize what they have done. They feel weak and miserable and in
order to feel better, they have to buy something else with the money they haven't got.
New research has shown that as well as the shopaholic, there are four other types of
shoppers, especially with which clothes are concerned.First, there are the shopaholies.Next,up to
28%of women say that they hate shopping, and try to avoid it unless absolutely necessary.
Others don't mind buying clothes but pay as little as possible. In general they feel that the money
spent on fashion is wasted,so they just don't bother. Then there are the quality shoppers who
buy only the best, probably because they feel that their money has been well spent. They find
cheap products a waste of money, but they also tend to buy fewer things. Finally there are the
bargain hunters, who enjoy the excitement of getting a bargain and look for those banners

A study of the University of Michigan (UM)has found that visual learning can be
strengthened in the brain during the deepest part of sleep called slow-wave sleep.
When we see something, our retinas(视网膜)transmit that image to the thalamus(丘脑)in
the brain, where neurons send very basic visual information to the visual cortex (to be
processed."When we are awake, neurons in the thalamus and the cortex fire steadily to transmit
visual information between them. However,in slow-wave sleep, those neurons will burst and then
pause rhythmically and in sync,"says study author Sara Aton'UM assistant professor.
There is also communication in the opposite direction, between the visual cortex and
the thalamus, forming a loop of communication between the two structures.
Prior work in Aton's lab showed that after presenting mice with a new type of visual experience
and then allowing those mice to sleep, neurons in the cortex fired more when mice were seeing those
stimuli again. But the study also showed the brain needed sleep in order to make cortical changes.
When mice were deprived of sleep after the experience,no changes in the cortex occurred.
The study also found that if the communication from the cortex to the thalamus during
slow-wave sleep was disrupted,it would completely disrupt the slow-wave rhythm and the
plasticity in the visual cortex.
"In these mice tests, during, visual experience,we saw immediate changes in the neurons in
the thalamus, but nothing was going on in the visual cortex,"Aton said."These waves during
subsequent()sleep are apparently able to transfer information from the thalamus to the
cortex, and that information reflects what that animal has just been looking at."
In the next step, the researchers plan to test what type of information can be relayed in this
way,and determine exactly how information is relayed to the cortex by the thalamic neurons.
32.What does the underlined word "them"in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Neurons and the cortex.
B.Neurons and the thalamus.
C.The thalamus and the cortex.
D.Retinas and the thalamus.
33.According to the mice tests, which of the following cannot be proved?
A.Sleep is important for visual learning.
B.Slow-wave sleep has nothing to do with visual learning.
C.Possible cortical changes won't happen if the communication between the cortex and
the thalamus is disturbed.
D.If the transmission work from the cortex to the thalamus is disturbed, the slow-wave
rhythm will be disturbed.
52
34.When mice were prevented from sleeping after the visual experience, what happened?
A.Neurons burst and paused.
B.Neurons in the cortex fired less.
C.Neurons in the cortex fired more.
D.Neurons in the cortex didn't make cortical changes.
35.Which is the best title of the passage?
A.The relationship between the thalamus and the cortex.
B.Slow-wave sleep is important for visual learning
C.A loop of communication between the thalamus and the cortex.
D.How neurons transmit information from the thalamus to the cortex.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was September 1966,and I was twenty years old, facing my first class of kids as a
new teacher. My class in downtown Toronto was made up of thirty-eight angels, and one
street kid named Mike. His parents passed away when he was a baby, and he lived with a
weak and indifferent grandmother. As for a ten-year-old boy,he was little and rough.
Like most new, young teachers,I was full of enthusiasm and determined to make a
difference.Being so young,I knew very little about parenting. However,I did recognize a
child in need, and decided to see if I could make a difference. And so my special"foster
father(养父)”relationship with Mike began..
Each day as I arrived at school,I'd take Mike out for breakfast. Each noon hour as I
shared my lunch with him,I taught him some new skills-for a while we worked on the
proper method of using a microscope. On another day we constructed a camera, then we
classified rocks.Mike would then"help"me teach these skills to the rest of the class. We
had a lot of fun,and a kind of unspoken trust began to build up between us.
Early in our special relationship,Mike told me of his dream-becoming a lawyer.I believed
then,and after thirty-four years of teaching I still believe,that all children have a gift.Everyone
has the same opportunity to be the best person they can be.I realized this boy was brilliant, and
that with a little love, attention, understanding, guidance and encouragement,he could probably
accomplish whatever he put his mind to.I figured if he wanted to be a lawyer,I would do all I
could to help him become the very best lawyer he could be.
Every Saturday morning,I took Mike to the Osgoode Law Library, which was
attached to the University of Toronto.I explained to him that reading up on law was the
only way to be a good lawyer. His young mind was eager and interested.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
