Our gift and book shop is more than just a place for mementos; it is an extension of our mission. This month, we are featuring the stunning Australian-made wood earrings. Inspired by the Australian bush, these bright and cheerful earrings will add a stunning pop to any autumn outfit.
Emu Café-warming winter flavours
The changes in the seasons are also being reflected in our Emu Café menu. As the air cools, our warming winter soups and shakshuka eggs are becoming the lunch of choice for many visitors.

With its rolling hills, dramatic waterfalls, and rich woodlands, the Durham Dales in England provides a natural habitat for birds — and it’s also home to zoologist and artist Sara Cox. Surrounded by nature since childhood, she has always been passionate about birds. Today, she creates detailed bird sculptures made from fine metal wire, combining scientific knowledge with artistic creativity to raise awareness about the challenges facing bird populations and to inspire people to care for them.
As a child, Sara spent much of her time outdoors with her brothers — exploring the garden or walking in the countryside. These early experiences helped her develop a deep appreciation for the natural world. At the same time, creativity was a strong presence in her home: her father, an engineer, enjoyed welding (焊接) and building, while her mother made pottery in her spare time. Their hands-on skills and artistic sensibility gave Sara both technical and creative foundations. Later, when she moved to Mickleton 20 years ago, the surrounding wildlife became a powerful source of inspiration. Observing birds up close in their natural habitat helped her find her own artistic voice and connect her love of nature with sculpture.
Sara’s wire bird sculptures are the result of careful observation and detailed study. She will sit outside for hours, sketching and observing their movements — right down to how their muscles work and how they shift their weight. She also visits museums to study bird skeletons (骨架) so she can understand the structure beneath the feathers. “To sculpt a bird accurately, I need to know what’s underneath,” she explains.
Her sculptures have been shown in national exhibitions, including one held by the Royal Society of British Artists in London. They can also be seen along nature trails (小径), such as at the Durham Wildlife Trust’s Low Barns reserve. Whether displayed in galleries or out in the wild, her work has been praised by museums, galleries, and wildlife trusts alike for its scientific accuracy, emotional impact, and ability to encourage greater appreciation for bird species.
4. Why did Sara Cox create bird sculptures?
A. To promote her hometown. B. To display her artistic talent.
C. To inspire conservation effort. D. To support scientific research.
5. Which experience most helped Sara Cox develop her artistic voice?
A. Trying different art techniques. B. Having close contact with birds.
C. Growing up in a creative family. D. Exploring nature with her brothers.
6. Which words can best describe Sara?
A. Patient and precise. B. Curious and brave.
C. Confident and proud. D. Creative and humorous.
7. Why is the Royal Society of British Artists mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To illustrate the UK’s top art institutions. B. To contrast national and local art scenes.
C. To explain the further study Sara pursued. D. To highlight the recognition Sara received.

The simple act of looking at a piece of visual art can boost your well-being, a new research study has found, and this benefit can be gained in a hospital setting as well as an art gallery.
Previous research has suggested that viewing art might influence mood or stress, but the research was limited and inconsistent. This study examined decades of scattered research, providing for the first time a clear and comprehensive overview of when, where and why art viewing is used to promote well-being. The review of 38 previously published studies covering a total of 6,805 participants was conducted by team of psychologists from University of Vienna, Trinity College Dublin, and Humboldt University of Berlin. It has been published this week in The Journal of Positive Psychology.
“People often think of art as a luxury, but our research suggests that viewing art, whether as a hobby or as a targeted health intervention, can meaningfully support well-being,” said MacKenzie Trupp, lead author and researcher at the University of Vienna and Radboud UMC, Donders Institute. “By reframing art as a low-cost, accessible well-being resource, this research opens up exciting possibilities for integrating art into everyday environments and public health strategies.”
Claire Howlin, Assistant Professor, School of Psychology, Trinity, added, “While the mental health benefits of creating art have been widely explored, the impact of viewing art has been under-researched and undervalued. Yet visual art is present and accessible in everyday spaces — museums, galleries, hospitals, and at home. Understanding its effects can unlock new avenues for promoting well-being through everyday encounters with art.”
“Since 2019 the WHO has recommended that creative approaches are used alongside routine clinical care. Art can satisfy people’s need to search for meaning in life, build self-esteem, and develop positive identities which are important factors for coping with the chaos of life. Departments of health and arts councils across Europe are looking for high quality evidence to identify which types of arts can be used for each type of medical outcome. This review will help to plan larger scale studies in the future.”
8. What’s the main function of paragraph 2?
A. To provide references for the research.
B. To introduce the guidelines of the research.
C. To stress the professionalism of the new research.
D. To highlight the consistency of the previous research.
9. What does the underlined word “reframing” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Designing. B. Redefining. C. Recognizing. D. Selecting.
10. How does Claire Howlin consider the impact of viewing art?
A. It calls for more attention.
B. It is a privilege of the rich.
C. Its effects on well-being are difficult to measure.
D. It can’t be integrated into public health strategies.
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Art Facilitates Personal Growth B. Art Viewing Improves Well-being
C. Famous Artworks Boost Mood Most D. Art Creating Benefits Mental Health
D
According to our research, around one in five workers in the UK talk to AI like a friend, turning to it for guidance on personal and professional problems. Data shows engaging with AI like this can leave us feeling heard and less lonely. However, with this newfound connection, many of us share sensitive, sometimes highly private information. Still, over a third of people fail to realize that AI platforms may not be very good at keeping our secrets secret.
For business, the risks are worrying. Consider Microsoft Copilot, for example. It gains Microsoft broad rights to the data inputted or outputted by any user — rights to use this data in any way it sees fit; it can even share it with third parties. This means that any sensitive business information could potentially be exposed to the world. Employers are taking note and taking action. According to our research, 25% have decided to either completely ban AI tools or regulate their use. But even with these policies in place, some workers choose to ignore the rules. They have their reasons: around 63% of them say AI increases their productivity, and some even feel AI offers more help than their human colleagues.
The situation presents a delicate balance between employing AI to raise efficiency and risking private data exposure. Companies need to manage AI tools with the same caution they apply to all data storage and exchange. There’s also a knowledge gap that needs to be addressed — 40% of individuals surveyed are unsure about who holds ownership over the content produced by AI. By establishing proper guidelines for AI use and creating policies that evolve with the technology, businesses can positively shift the AI landscape.
AI has the power to simplify office work and improve working experience. It’s up to us to navigate its usage cautiously so it supports us without putting our privacy at risk. There’s no need to back away from progress, as long as we’re equipped with the knowledge and tools to make sure AI remains a friend. And this is where the challenge lies. There are so many products out there, being promoted with huge advertising and marketing budgets, that it’s easy to fall victim. But by building a culture of digital responsibility within our business, we can create a future where AI can help us without spilling the beans.
12. What benefit can workers get from AI according to Paragraph 1?
A. Rapid career progress. B. Strong emotional support.
C. Continuous work motivation. D. Smooth workplace communication.
13. Why do some employees continue to use AI despite company rules?
A. To get access to sensitive data. B. To keep up with business updates.
C. To improve their work efficiency. D. To gain an advantage over colleagues.
14. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. AI has reached its full potential.
B. Companies should adapt rules to AI development.
C. Few firms realize the value of AI guidelines.
D. Ownership of AI products has been clearly defined.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The advantages and risks of workplace AI use.
B. The wide application of AI tools in modern offices.
C. Practical guidelines for protecting data against AI leaks.
D. Conflicts between employers and employees over AI policies.

Imagine this: You’re staring at a messy homework planner, your phone ringing with TikTok notifications, while your best friend argues fiercely about yesterday’s basketball game. This chaotic scene is your personal battlefield — and Sun Tzu’s 2,500-year-old strategies can bring order to the chaos. ____16____
Every skilled leader knows some fights consume more value than they create. Consider how classmates sometimes form tight groups — maybe the “pop music fans” argue endlessly over which is the better singer, or certain students exclude (排挤) others based on old bitterness. Sun Tzu would remind us: “____17____” Instead of joining lunch table debates about who belongs to which group, use that energy to practice for the upcoming speech contest or study for next week’s chemistry quiz. True battle isn’t about fitting in — it’s about choosing where to shine.
____18____ Let’s build a study schedule Sun Tzu would approve. Start by inspecting the “enemy territory” — your midterm exams. If history tests emphasize essay writing, schedule daily practice just for that. Next, analyze your weaknesses like a general studying his army’s disadvantages. Feeling sleepy during English readings? Try studying at sunrise when your mind is sharpest. Finally, break big tasks into “mini-missions” — conquering five vocabulary words daily feels easier than memorizing 100 at once.
Yet Sun Tzu’s deepest lesson warns that our worst enemy often stays hidden within. That phone exhausting your study hours? It’s your Trojan Horse — a gift hiding danger. ____19____ Conduct a weekly self-check: Track screen time versus homework progress. You might discover two hours daily lost to games, equal to 14 hours weekly — enough to master a new skill.
____20____. Now it is time to arm your pen with this wisdom: its true might lies not in outperforming others, but in building a better version of you. Go rewrite your story, one strategic choice at a time.
A. Wise warriors win by avoiding pointless wars.
B. Maybe it’s time to turn self-awareness into a weapon.
C. That’s the enemy’s drumbeat trying to distract you from the course.
D. Planning separates the stressed from the strategic.
E. Let’s explore how ancient wisdom applies to modern student struggles.
F. All warfare is based on cheating.
G. True victory isn’t about beating classmates but outgrowing yesterday’s self.

Adam loved football. He loved the smell of the grass as he slid across it. And he loved the excitement when he shot the ball into the net. There was nothing in this world that could weigh the same as football in his heart. He dreamed of growing up to be a professional footballer.
Every day Adam would go to the field and practise with his friends. He still remembered when he asked to join the older boys, they teased (取笑) him, “You’re too small. Football is for big, tough players, not for someone your size.” Then when they saw he could run, kick, and shoot as well as they could, the teasing stopped. Adam played hard and really had a gift. He even became the only one in the group who could do the bicycle kick
One day after school, Adam went to the playground to practise as usual. The boys were talking quietly, casting excited glances at a man who was watching the field. As Adam joined the group, Captain Harold told him the man, called Mr. Smith, was looking for players for his football camp and there would be a tryout match the next day. Adam could hardly contain his excitement. The camp meant there would be professional coaches to train him! He would do anything to join it.
After the practice, Mr. Smith approached and Adam crowded close so he could see him. “Who wants to come to my football camp and really learn to play this game?” Mr. Smith asked. Excited hands shot up. Mr. Smith shook them all and shook Adam’s hand last.
“Little man, I saw you run fast,” he said. “But you are far too thin and short for my camp. You’ll get knocked down in a second.”
Adam looked down so no one would see his disappointment. “It’s not fair! Adam’s been practising with us and he’s the only one who ever did the bicycle kick!” Harold argued.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

C 5. B 6. A 7. D

C 9. B 10. A 11. B

B 13. C 14. B 15. A

根据第二段“They have their reasons: around 63% of them say AI increases their productivity, and some even feel AI offers more help than their human colleagues. (他们自有理由:约63%的员工表示AI能提升工作效率,部分人甚至觉得AI比同事更有用。)”可知,即便公司出台管控规定,员工仍坚持使用AI是为了提高工作效率。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“By establishing proper guidelines for AI use and creating policies that evolve with the technology, businesses can positively shift the AI landscape.
因此 “The advantages and risks of workplace AI use (职场使用人工智能的利弊)”最能概括全文主旨。
E 17. A 18. D 19. B 20. G
前文“Imagine this: You’re staring at a messy homework planner, your phone ringing with TikTok notifications, while your best friend argues fiercely about yesterday’s basketball game. This chaotic scene is your personal battlefield — and Sun Tzu’s 2,500-year-old strategies can bring order to the chaos.
前文“Consider how classmates sometimes form tight groups — maybe the “pop music fans” argue endlessly over which is the better singer, or certain students exclude (排挤) others based on old bitterness. Sun Tzu would remind us (看看同学们是如何形成小圈子的——或许“流行音乐迷”们会无休止地争论哪位歌手更优秀,也可能某些学生会因为旧怨而排挤他人。孙子会提醒我们)”描述同学间无意义的争论和排外行为,引出孙子的提醒,后文“Instead of joining lunch table debates about who belongs to which group, use that energy to practice for the upcoming speech contest or study for next week’s chemistry quiz. (与其把精力浪费在午餐桌上争论“谁属于哪个小团体”,不如专注练习即将到来的演讲比赛,或者复习下周的化学小测。)”建议将精力投入到真正重要的事情中,因此A项“Wise warriors win by avoiding pointless wars. (明智的战士通过避免无意义的战争取胜。)”符合语境,是孙子提醒的内容,其中的“avoiding pointless wars”呼应前文的描述,且“wise warriors”引出后文的具体建议。故选A。
后文“Let’s build a study schedule Sun Tzu would approve. Start by inspecting the “enemy territory” — your midterm exams. If history tests emphasize essay writing, schedule daily practice just for that. Next, analyze your weaknesses like a general studying his army’s disadvantages. (让我们制定一份连孙子都会认可的学习计划。首先“侦察敌情”——摸清你的期中考试范围。如果历史考试侧重论述题,那就专门安排每日写作练习。接着像将军分析军队短板那样,找出自己的知识薄弱环节。)”、和“Finally, break big tasks into “mini-missions” — conquering five vocabulary words daily feels easier than memorizing 100 at once. (最终,把大任务拆解成“小目标”——每天攻克5个单词,远比一口气死记100个要轻松得多。)”详细描述如何制定学习计划,核心是“战略规划”,因此D项“Planning separates the stressed from the strategic. (规划将压力重着与策略者区分开来)”符合语境,说明规划的意义,可作为段首句引出后文建议,其中的“planning”和“strategic”点明段落主旨。故选D。
【19题详解】
前文“That phone exhausting your study hours? It’s your Trojan Horse — a gift hiding danger. (手机正在消耗你的学习时间?它就像特洛伊木马——表面是礼物,暗藏危机。)”指出手机是“特洛伊木马”,是隐藏的敌人,后文“Conduct a weekly self-check: Track screen time versus homework progress. (每周自我检查:对比屏幕使用时间和作业进度。)”建议每周自我检查,因此B项“Maybe it’s time to turn self-awareness into a weapon. (或许是时候将自我意识转化为武器了。)”符合语境,起到过渡作用,其中的“self-awareness”与后文的“a weekly self-check”呼应,“weapon”呼应“对抗隐藏敌人”的比喻。故选B。
【20题详解】
后文“Now it is time to arm your pen with this wisdom: its true might lies not in outperforming others, but in building a better version of you. Go rewrite your story, one strategic choice at a time. (现在,是时候用这份智慧武装你的笔:它真正的力量不在于超越他人,而在于塑造一个更好的自己。以每一次策略性的选择,重写你的人生篇章。)”总结用智慧武装自己,并指出真正的力量在于提升自我,因此G项“True victory isn’t about beating classmates but outgrowing yesterday’s self. (真正的胜利不是击败同学,而是超越昨天的自己。)”符合语境,引出后文的总结,其中的“outgrowing yesterday’s self”与后文的“building a better version of you”呼应。故选G。

A Better Break Between Classes
While many students are used to staying indoors, I believe viewing greenery would be a better choice.
Rather than remaining seated, we should head outside. This simple move acts as a perfect reset for our minds, releasing the pressure built up during class. Furthermore, it gives our brains a gap to digest newly-learned knowledge, which sharpens our concentration for the next period.

Inspired, Adam decided to seize the opportunity. Gathering all his courage, Adam stepped up, looked directly at Mr. Smith and said, “Sir, I really love football and I’ve got tired of hearing people say I’m too small to play. Actually I could do as well as the big boys and even better!” Hearing Adam’s words, Mr. Smith raised his eyebrows and thought for a while. Seeing Mr. Smith hesitate slightly, Adam begged him sincerely for a chance. Finally, Mr. Smith nodded and told him to come the next day.
The next day Adam came to the tryout. The players were divided into two groups and Adam ran actively through the field, seeking a chance to goal. Soon, Harold passed him the ball! Adam positioned himself, jumped as high as he could and kicked the ball with his head down. The ball flew directly into the net! A perfect bicycle kick! When Mr. Smith announced the qualified players, Adam’s heart pounded fiercely. Hearing his name, he hugged Harold and jumped with excitement.
