Section Ⅲ Integrated skills Ⅰ.阅读理解 A Wine experts have warned for years that climate change could result in shifting harvest seasons, lower quality wine, and limited plant growth. But here’s a piece of good news: In Bordeaux, France, one of the world’s main wine growing areas, climate change may actually make wine taste better — for now. 70-year data of wine critic scores in Bordeaux, with weather data from the period, showed that wine quality — based on factors such as rich and strong taste — increased over time, according to a study. For the years 1950 to 2020, scientists analyzed the variation in overall Bordeaux wine quality. The team’s statistical models tested how wine quality in Bordeaux was related to weather factors such as season length, temperature, and rainfall. The highest-quality Bordeaux wines came from years with warmer and drier summers, cooler and wetter winters, and earlier and shorter growing seasons.Climate change is expected to make these conditions more frequent in the region. For instance, it is predicted that France will become warmer, with a four-degree Celsius increase by 2100.Warm temperatures can increase grapes’ sugar content and create sweeter wine.Because Bordeaux wine producers traditionally rely on rainfall for water, there is a direct connection between the climate and wine productivity. Study leader Andrew was surprised to find that more rainfall during the winter season when grapevines (葡萄藤) are not growing, resulted in better quality wine for the following harvest.“Traditionally we consider weather during the growing season to see how it can affect grape quality. However, the vines are there all year round, and we found weather conditions in the non-growing season had an impact through the next harvest,” says Andrew.More rain in the winter might result in better water balance in the soil during the growing season.“Healthy vines make better grapes,” says Andrew. 1.What may be the effect of climate change on wine in Bordeaux in paragraph 1?( ) A.The taste of the wine is better. B.The price of the wine is higher. C.The production of the wine increases. D.The quality of the wine is lower. 2.What’s the purpose of the example in paragraph 4?( ) A.To offer some details. B.To stimulate readers’ interest. C.To give a recommendation. D.To explain the author’s opinion. 3.What is the last paragraph mainly about?( ) A.The impact of climate on grape quality throughout the year. B.The positive effects of more winter rainfall on wine quality. C.The importance of new wine producing ways in Bordeaux. D.The traditional considerations of weather during the growing season. 4.In which section of a website can we read this text?( ) A.Science. B.Lifestyle. C.Technology. D.Medicine. B Many factors can influence whether a patient lives or dies. However, in data from different countries, patients seen by female doctors seem to do better than those seen by male ones. In 2017, Yusuke Tsugawa of Harvard Medical School, and his colleagues in Boston analyzed the medical records of around 1.5 million older adults who had been in hospital in America between 2011 and 2014.They found that patients whose treatment had been performed by a female doctor were about 4% less likely to die than those whose treatment doctor was a man. One disadvantage with the study is that it is retrospective, looking back at naturally occurring data rather than random experiments. This could cover any factors which might be really driving the effect, says Gavin Stewart, an expert at Newcastle University. It could be that female doctors tend to be responsible for healthier patients than their male colleagues. In an experiment where patients were randomly distributed among doctors, female doctors seem to do better. Researchers say the next step is to work out why.“I don’ t think it’s the presence or absence of a Y chromosome (染色体),” says Dr Christopher Wallis, “I think it’s a series of behaviours that are linked with gender.” Past research has found that female doctors tend to spend more time with patients, are more likely to provide preventive care and tend to stick more closely to guidelines than their male colleagues do.This could reduce the risk of deaths. Understanding why such a difference in care will help all doctors improve their practice. For all things that advanced medical equipment and new drugs can do, a physician’s judgement seems to be as important. 5.In which way was the study in 2017 conducted?( ) A.Theoretical models. B.Statistical methods. C.Practical examples. D.Historical analyses. 6.What does the underlined word “retrospective” in paragraph 3 mean?( ) A.Critical. B.Backtracked. C.Dated. D.Accurate. 7.Which statement would Wallis probably agree with?( ) A.Y chromosome determines gender differences. B.Gender difference in care has different effects. C.Female doctors are always assigned with healthier patients. D.Male doctors could reduce the potential risk of deaths. 8.What can we know from the last paragraph?( ) A.A doctor’s judgement is as important as other factors. B.Gender difference can’t help improve doctors’ treatment. C.We should notice gender difference in doctors’ treatment. D.We could use doctors’ judgement to improve his treatment. C (2026•江苏江阴高级中学月考)Many of us are lucky enough to have some degree of choice over what we eat.But are the decisions we make about our diet as free as we assume? It appears we’re hugely influenced by other people — especially those closest to us — when it comes to what we eat.Research has found that the closer and stronger two people’s connection is, the more control they have over each other’s food choices. This means social signals generally encourage us to eat more.Being around healthy eaters may guide you to eat healthier as well, though.Eating habits are also affected by what we see.“There is proof that, if you see pictures of food, that visual stimulation can inspire your desire to eat,” says a UK scientist, Suzanne Higgs. Social media is one place where visual and social signals meet.Evidence shows if friends in your social network post regularly about particular types of food, it could lead you to copy them, for better or for worse. And research indicates that social media might be changing our relationship with food, making us think differently about what we eat.“If all your friends on social media are posting pictures of themselves consuming fast food, it’s going to set a norm that eating fast food is what people do,” says Higgs. Research suggests we’re more likely to be attracted by photos of fast food, especially some rich in saturated fat (饱和脂肪), which can make us feel good, says Ethan Pancer, a professor in Canada.Humans are biologically prepared to seek out high-calorie food — an ability that helped our ancestors survive when they searched for food. “Healthier foods are often seen as boring in comparison, and processed food is considered ‘cool’,” says Tina Tessitore, a researcher from France.“In advertising, you see unhealthy food in social settings — people having a barbecue with friends, for example, while healthy food usually focuses more on the nutritional value. If you saw friends eating salad together, it wouldn’t seem so true.” All of the findings are bothering researchers about the effects of social media, whether good or bad. 9.What’s the author’s main purpose of writing the article?( ) A.To present elements affecting eating habits. B.To explain the reasons for advertising food. C.To raise public awareness of physical health. D.To conclude findings of a new research. 10.Which of the statements might Suzanne Higgs agree with?( ) A.Seeing photos of familiar food prevents you from eating more. B.Social media has more influence on your diet than close friends. C.You may fall into the habit of fast food consumption following social media. D.You’re sure to imitate what others make and eat if you regularly surf the Internet. 11.What can we infer from the article?( ) A.People are free to make a choice on what to eat. B.Human beings are born to choose food rich in calories. C.The young generation prefers fast food because it’s “cool”. D.You’ll be easily encouraged to pick out food by experts. 12.What might the author focus on in the following paragraph?( ) A.Researchers make market surveys testing netizens’ acceptance of salad. B.Internet stars stand out in advertising different kinds of processed foods. C.Public opinions vary on the current issue of food safety and nutritious diet. D.Researchers are becoming concerned about how social media affects our diet. Ⅱ.阅读七选五 Can’t Resist Junk Food? Study Suggests You Try This Simple Trick You’re tired and hungry. Then you catch a whiff of something delicious, probably fried and almost certainly fattening. It is fried chicken! 13. A new research says that exposing to the smell of junk food for at least two minutes can actually help you make healthier food choices. Let’s take a closer look at this process.Have you ever noticed that whatever appetizing treat catches your nose’s attention tends to be most appealing just after you first smell it? What will happen if you’re standing in line after a couple of minutes? 14. And recent science says that this is actually the right moment to walk away. The results of a series of experiments, including field studies at a supermarket and at a middle school cafeteria, show that extended exposure (of more than two minutes) to junk food smell (e.g. cookie smell) leads to lower purchases of unhealthy foods compared with healthy smell (e.g. strawberry smell).15. That is why long exposure to junk food smell can be as satisfactory as actually having it in your mouth, which in turn decreases the desire for consumption of junk food. 16. When the exposure to smell of healthy food was examined, food choices were not profoundly influenced. The reason for this is that healthy food is not connected with reward in our brain and therefore has little influence on what we desire. So next time you’re feeling you don’t have the willpower to resist those French fries, it might be as simple as sitting there and smelling all that sweetness for just a minute or two.17. A.But wait a minute before you order. B.It’s a response that has been researched. C.Get the satisfaction with none of the calories. D.It isn’t quite as irresistible as it was just moments ago. E.However, it’s not the same case with smell of healthy food. F.It’s the same as actually eating it because your desire to eat it is satisfied. G.The brain doesn’t necessarily distinguish between a pleasurable smell and taste.
