How to read a poem Poetry is a combination of “sound” and “sense”①.More than any other type of literature, it usually implies a deeper meaning beyond the words② on the page. So, how to reveal this hidden dimension③? First, follow your ears④.[1]While you may ask “What does it mean?” as you begin reading a poem, it is better to ask “How does it sound?” Even if its true meaning appears to be beyond your grasp⑤, you can always say something about how the poem sounds when you read it aloud.Do you detect a rhythm⑥? Are there any repeated words, rhymes or other special effects? All of these are good qualities to notice, and they may lead you to a better understanding⑦ of the poem in the end.Read these lines to feel how they sound. Sweet and low, sweet and low, Wind of the western sea, Low, low, breathe and blow, Wind of the western sea! Over the rolling waters go, Come from the dying moon, and blow, Blow him again to me; While my little one, while my pretty one, sleeps. (From “Sweet and Low” by Alfred Tennyson) [2]Second, approach the poem as if you were an explorer in an unfamiliar landscape⑧. Ask some basic questions about the poem.Who is talking? Who is being talked to? What is being described? Is there a sense of place? Are there other people or objects there? As you explore the poem, you will begin to see images in your mind⑨.What are those images, and what happens when they are put together? This combination is often complex or even contradictory⑩.As you slowly explore your surroundings, you will start to dig up clues⑪ that give you a greater understanding of the poem⑫.Read these lines, pay attention to the image of the caged bird⑬ and try to find out what it means⑭. The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom. (From “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou) Third, if you are still struggling to interpret⑮ the meaning of a poem even with much painstaking effort, just have some patience. You cannot really understand a poem that you have only read once.Sometimes reading a poem can be a lifelong job.So if you do not get it, set the poem aside⑯ and come back to it later. As an explorer, you will not reach your goal immediately — you need to go on a journey to a remote and unknown destination⑰.This may seem difficult at first, but when you finally make your great discovery, your efforts will be rewarded.[3]Poems that are easy to understand are often less interesting than those that constantly reveal deeper and previously unrecognized meanings⑱. Read these lines and try to find out what they mean. Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. (From “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” by Robert Frost) Finally, remember that you do not have to fully understand a poem to appreciate it.You might need to abandon logical thinking⑲ to discover its true inner beauty⑳.[4]As long as the journey of poetry reading makes you feel something or lets you perceive another level of meaning㉑, it will have been worth your effort㉒. Poetry’s combination of “sound” and “sense” makes you see the world in a new way㉓ and allows you to go beyond normal reality㉔ for the everlasting beauty㉕.Enjoy your journey in the world of poetry! Ⅰ. 与“How does it sound?” 句式结构:“While ..., it is better to ...” [3]对比结构:“less interesting than ...” [4]表达的包容性:“As long as ...”(只要…… Ⅰ.阅读理解 􀳁A One of the most commonly asked questions in the English language is “How are you?” and whether a person is feeling happy or sad, excited or lonely, fantastic or heartbroken, they will just about always answer “Fine”.Why is this? Is it because humans are not good at expressing their emotions? Maybe it is just that emotions are often too personal or too complex to be shared in a casual conversation. However, for centuries, people have often expressed their emotions on paper,in the form of poetry. The beauty of poetry is that the emotions the poet is trying to convey are often disguised in images so that the poet can maintain a feeling of privacy. For example,in Li Bai’s poem,“Seeing Meng Haoran Off at Yellow Crane Tower”,the poet describes the sail of his friend’s boat disappearing into the distance while he watches the river rolling by.This could seem merely like the description of a beautiful scene, but by reading into the poem, you can sense the deep sadness and loneliness that his friend’s leaving has caused him. Poetry is also written to celebrate positive human emotions like joy, love and happiness.Throughout history, men and women have written poems to their loved ones to express their deep feelings.Poems about nature, which express the poet’s appreciation of the beauty in the world around him or her,are also common.Sadly, many poems have also been written to express anger at the destruction of nature and reactions to horrific events like war and death. The interesting thing about poetry is that anyone reading a poem can have their own view or feelings about it and heated discussions can often arise over what the poet was originally trying to say or express.Poetry can be interpreted in many different ways.Often,a poem that one person loves may be hated by another.Equally,a poem that one person understands and relates to may turn another person off. 1.What is the purpose of questions in paragraph 1?( ) A.To introduce a topic. A teacher who later became a dear friend introduced me to Edna St Vincent Millay (ESVM), the famous poet who lived in Manhattan at the turn of the 20th century. One of my favorite possessions — a valuable first-edition copy of ESVM’s short poetry collection, A Few Figs from Thistles — was a gift from this friend who was old enough to be my mother at the time. She told me the first “fig” described how I was living my life.“My candle burns at both ends; it will not last the night; but ah, my foes, and oh,my friends — it gives a lovely night!” I was struggling to make ends meet but always made the time for fun by hanging out with friends. Some of them, of course, were careless with my heart but I could always find comfort and courage in ESVM’s wise words. Rather than bore my friends, I could fall into my sorrow — whether it hit me — cry as much as I wanted in my bedroom.I found everything I needed in those 32 pages — hope, wisdom and encouragement. In the years since, I’ve found myself attracted to poetry whenever someone caused me pain. Is it actually possible for something as common as a poem to save a life? I’m not certain of that, but I can prove the power of words.Like a relaxing walk outside, poetry can provide a healthy distraction and a meaningful change in perspective. Like music, poetry speaks a universal language of rhythm, and speaks truths in a language that describes emotions. So why not keep interested in poems? 5.What was the author’s life like when she was introduced to poetry?( ) A.Peaceful. The immediate benefits of reading poetry are improvements to vocabulary.Poetry makes the reader familiar with new terms and encourages verbal analysis. This presents reading as a creative act in its own right. The common practice of memorizing poems also improves long-term brain health.Studies have shown that people who memorize and recall poems are less susceptible (易受影响的) to Alzheimer’s. Poetry also improves critical thinking by forcing a reader to think. In great poetry, meaning is not obvious or one-dimensional (一维的).Understanding poetry is an active practice, rather than the passive engagement encouraged with prose (散文).Readers of poetry are more likely than non-readers to analyze information for viewpoints. This skill benefits students, but also anyone who wants to form their own opinions of news items or gain a better perspective upon documents like contracts. The critical thinking skills developed through reading poetry give greater control over language itself. The most remarkable power of literature is its ability to unite reader and writer across time and cultural boundaries. As condensed (凝练的) literature, poetry offers these benefits in a powerful way.Poetry triggers memories and emotions in its readers. This connection between universal emotions and personal experience encourages the development of empathy.A reader might have no practical conception of what life was like during the Elizabethan era in England. However, Shakespeare’s Sonnets with their universal themes of love and longing, can bridge the gap of centuries and help us gain an insight into people’s feelings in the 17th century. 9.Which of the following is the benefit memorizing poetry brings to the brain?( ) A.It improves people’s long-term memory.
