Helen Keller wrote a book, Three Days to See, in 1.which she expressed what she would have done if she 2.had been (be) given the use of her eyes for just three days.
On the first day, she should most like to see the people whose kindness, 3.gentleness (gentle) and companionship have made her life worth 4.living (live). She should see the 5.books (book) which have been read to her, and which have revealed to her the 6.deepest (deep) channels of human life and the human spirit. In the afternoon, she should take 7.a long walk in the woods intoxicating her eyes on the beauties of the world of nature. On her second day, she should like to go to the museums trying to probe into the soul of man through his art.She should spend the evening at a theater or at the movies.
On the third day, she should again 8.eagerly (eager) greet the dawn, anxious 9.to discover (discover) new delights and beauty. She should spend the day in the workaday world, amid the haunts of men going about the business of life.At midnight, permanent night would close in 10.on her and only then should she realize how much she had left unseen.
Three Days to See
[1]I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf① for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight②; silence would teach him the joys of sound.
Now and then I have tested my seeing friends to discover what they see.[2]Recently, I asked a friend who had just returned from a long walk in the woods what she had observed.“Nothing in particular③,” she replied.
How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk for an hour through the woods and see nothing worthy of note④? I who cannot see find hundreds of things to interest me through mere touch⑤.[3]If I can get so much pleasure from touch, how much more beauty must be revealed by sight⑥? And I have imagined what I should most like to see if I were given the use of my eyes, say for just three days.
【赏靓点】 [3]句使用了If ...how much more ...
(1)note (Para.3)
(2)observe (Para.2)
(3)mere (Para.3)
On the first day, I should want to see the people whose kindness and gentleness and companionship have made my life worth living⑦.I do not know what it is to see into the heart of a friend through that “window of the soul⑧”, the eye.I can only “see” through my fingertips the outline of a face⑨.[4]I should like to see the books which have been read to me, and which have revealed to me the deepest channels⑩ of human life and the human spirit. In the afternoon I should take a long walk in the woods and intoxicate my eyes on the beauties of the world of nature. That night, I should not be able to sleep.
On my second day, I should like to see the pageant of man’s progress⑪, and I should go to the museums.I should try to probe into the soul of man⑫ through his art.The things I knew through touch I should now see.The evening of my second day I should spend at a theater or at the movies.
The following morning, I should again greet the dawn, [5]anxious to discover new delights, new revelations of beauty⑬.Today I shall spend in the workaday world, amid the haunts of men⑭ going about the business of life⑮.
Paras.4-5
2.靓词
intoxicate (Para.4)
At midnight permanent night would close in on me⑯ again.[6]Only when darkness had again descended upon me⑰ should I realize how much I had left unseen.
I who am blind can give one hint to those who see:[7]Use your eyes as if tomorrow you would be stricken blind. And the same method can be applied to the other senses⑱.Hear the music of voices, the song of a bird, the mighty strains of an orchestra⑲, as if you would be stricken deaf tomorrow.Touch each object you want to touch as if tomorrow your tactile sense⑳ would fail.Smell the perfume of flowers㉑, taste with relish㉒ each morsel, as if tomorrow you could never smell and taste again. But of all the senses, I am sure that sight must be the most delightful.
(Excerpts from “Three Days to See” by Helen Keller)
【赏靓点】 [6]句使用了Only when ...should I ...
(1)haunt (Para.6)
(2)strain (Para.8)
(3)relish(Para.8)

(2026•河南驻马店期中)At 58, Tom Cillo is living his dream of playing college football. The shouts of “Yeah, Tom!” began as he stepped onto the field at Girardi Stadium. After taking a few steps to shake off his nerves and playfully cupping his ear toward the crowd, the country’s oldest freshman player took his position on the defensive line.Across from him was Anthony D’Antonio, a freshman center decades younger. They exchanged a respectful handshake before the play began.Moments later, the whistle blew, and Cillo officially became an NCAA Division Ⅲ player, free from the burden of “What if I had tried?”
Cillo’s journey began during a conversation with his longtime friend Dave Bellomo.Having recently left his job with the Williamsport Recreation Department, Cillo shared his regrets about never attending college or playing football.Bellomo encouraged him, asking, “Why don’t you?” With his children grown and his wife supportive, Cillo decided it was time to act.“I wanted regret out of the picture altogether,” he said.
Bellomo designed a rigorous training plan for Cillo. It included full-speed hill runs where Cillo carried a 100-pound rock, along with stretching and recovery treatments.Meanwhile, Cillo applied to Lycoming College, where he intended to major in criminal justice and pay his own tuition.“I’m taking a risk academically, physically, and financially,” he admitted, “but I’m smiling through the stress.”
Cillo’s strength impressed his teammates, but learning the game was challenging.“Some days I’d wake up and say, ‘You’ve got to get around,’ and my body would say, ‘Slow down, brother,’” he recalled.Despite the difficulties, he pushed on through the training camp and earned his spot on the team.
Though playing time is limited, Cillo’s impact extends beyond the field. He offers rides, buys meals, and provides advice, endearing himself to his teammates.“Everyone just loves him,” said Mason Woodward, a fellow defensive lineman.
Cillo hopes his story inspires others.“I know there are people out there holding themselves back,” he said.“If you have a dream, follow through with it.” For Cillo, it’s never too late to pursue a passion.

What does it take to achieve true success? While talent and intelligence are often celebrated, real-world examples and psychological research suggest that other factors may matter more.
One of the most famous examples comes from Thomas Edison. It’s reported that he failed over 1,000 times before successfully inventing the light bulb.Rather than seeing these as failures, Edison famously remarked, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.” This perspective demonstrates a powerful approach to setbacks: viewing them as necessary steps toward growth rather than as defeats.
Similarly, J.K.Rowling’s journey to success was filled with obstacles. Before achieving worldwide fame with the Harry Potter series, she faced numerous rejections from publishers. As a single mother relying on welfare benefits, she persisted in believing in her story and continued submitting her manuscript. Her perseverance not only brought her literary success but also inspired millions of readers globally.
Modern psychology confirms the importance of this quality.Research shows that resilience — the ability to recover from difficulties — plays a crucial role in achieving success.Psychologist Angela Duckworth calls this quality “grit”. Her studies indicate that grit, more than intelligence or natural talent, is what predicts long-term achievement.People with grit maintain their commitment to goals despite slow progress or obstacles.
So how can one develop grit? Psychologist Carol Dweck’s concept of “growth mindset” provides an answer.Individuals with a growth mindset believe their abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. They view challenges as opportunities to improve rather than as threats to their self-esteem.This mindset enables them to persist when facing difficulties, ultimately leading to greater achievement.

(2026•安徽合肥期中)The value of embracing (欣然接受) adversity is almost always discovered after the fact. This is because it is also a truth that learning in the face of challenge, disappointment and frustration is as important as understanding what it takes to be successful.Learning these lessons well and surviving the tests that the lessons lie in lead to even greater moments of confidence and accomplishment.
Young athletes who are comfortable overcoming adversities are the ones who find the greatest growth, and ultimately greatest success.Famous strength coach Vern Gambetta and others summarized this concept in the thought that, to be great, you must “be comfortable being uncomfortable”.To put it bluntly (直言地) the best athletes welcome challenge and adversity as a requirement for growth and achievement. The best coaches create environments that challenge limits and take athletes to places they wouldn’t go to on their own, and even create adversity from time to time for this reason.
To sum up, one very basic but exceptionally powerful conclusion can be reached: Young athletes, when facing moments of frustration and challenge in their personal sporting development, must be encouraged to solve problems themselves, work harder to overcome disappointments, and take ownership and control of their own destinies.
In today’s society, unfortunately, removing any sign of potential adversity for young athletes is pervasive.Well-intentioned individuals (parents, coaches and many other related adults) frequently try to remove every barrier and challenge on the road their young athlete travels. The unfortunate product of these good intentions is only realized when the athletes finally come to a challenge that they must meet alone and then find themselves completely unprepared to deal with it and have a tough time reviving if they fail to overcome the challenge.
Psychologist Max Trenerry notes that the concept of willingness to accept adversity or failure is important whether for learning new skills in sports or dealing with anxiety-causing thoughts in therapy. While every parent may “rescue” their children from time to time, doing so frequently creates bigger long-term complications and prevents growth of personal perseverance.

Dear Steve,
How is everything going? Last week our class had an art appreciation lesson and I’m writing to share it with you.
The work for appreciation was The Starry Night painted by Van Gogh. What impressed me most were its circling blue sky, bright stars, and small village. The painting’s energy comes from its dramatic, circling sky where stars twinkle, contrasting sharply with the quiet village below. It is more a powerful expression of emotion than a landscape.
This work also made me realize art isn’t just about beauty — it’s a way to express deep feelings and it taught me to look at things with more enthusiasm.
Yours,
Li Hua
