Once considered crazy by fellow villagers, Indonesian eco-warrior
Sadiman has turned barren (贫瘠的) hills green after 25 years of
effort, making water resources available in the drought-prone
mountainous region where he lives.
Lovingly addressed as “grandpa”, the 72-year-old has worked
continuously to plant trees in the hills of central Java after fires intended to
clear the land for farming nearly dried up its rivers and lakes.
“I thought to myself, if I don’t plant trees, this area would
become dry,” said Sadiman, an average old man like many
Indonesians, “And in my experience, banyan trees (榕树) and
ficus trees (无花果树) can store a lot of water.”
Thanks to his efforts, springs have formed where once there was
barren and dry land, with their water piped to homes and used to irrigate
(灌溉) farms. The long and widespread roots of at least 11,000
banyan and ficus trees, Sadiman has planted over 617 acres help to hold
groundwater and prevent land erosion (侵蚀).
Yet at the beginning, few village residents appreciated his work.
“People blamed me for bringing banyan tree seeds to the village
because they felt uneasy as they believed there were spirits in these
trees,” Sadiman added.
“Some even thought he was a bad man because he traded the goats
he raised for young trees,” said one villager, Warto. “In the past,
people thought he was crazy, but look at the result now — Lack of rain in
the area where he planted trees had once limited farmers to a single harvest
a year, but now, the plentiful water sources ensure two or three.”
Sadiman also funds his work through a nursery of plants such as
cloves and Jackfruit, that he can sell or trade. “I hope people here can
have wealthy lives and live happily. And don’t burn the forest over and
over again,” Sadiman added, with a twinkle in his eye.

Rubbish is ever-lasting,” wrote
Czech author Ivan Klima in his novel Love and Garbage. “What else is
there that is so unbreakable?” And even as we make the world into a
greener place by adopting renewable energy, the problem of how to deal
with waste remains a difficult one to solve.
The thing is, renewable energy tools like wind turbines (涡轮机)
do a lot of good, but they also need replacing and recycling when they
get old. Many of the parts can be turned into liquid by heating and used
again, but this comes at a cost to the environment, because the process
produces carbon emissions (碳排放). Luckily, experts have been
working on ways to use these giant turbines again at the end of their
lives.
Old blades (叶片) have been used as noise barriers next to roads,
as bike sheds, and as children’s playground equipment. And some of
the stems (the parts that hold the engines are called stems) have even
been used to build houses.
Last year, a Swedish energy company called Vattenfall and Dutch
firm Blade-Made worked together to create a tiny home made from a
useless turbine. Shown during Dutch Design Week in 2024, it’s 4
meters wide, 10 meters long and 3 meters high and is surprisingly light
and airy thanks to glass doors at either end. Crucially, it also agreed
with Dutch building rules.
But with more and more turbines expected to be replaced in the
coming years, could they really help to solve housing crises? Jos de
Krieger is a co-founder of Blade-Made, and he says, “Why
not?” His company, along with its cooperators, is planning to create
10 tiny homes using turbines. He said that making old turbines into
homes is “the most complex thing you can do”, but now it’s been
done; anything is possible. “We need solutions,” he said, adding
that he wants to “create stories, instead of waste”. Klima would
surely approve.

D
Researchers have observed Florida carpenter ants biting off the
injured legs of their companions.
These surgeries are the first known example of non-human animals
performing amputations(截肢) to improve a fellow animal’s chances of
recovering, the researchers say.“Not only can they do this, but they
are even able to check the wounds and, depending on the location,
adapt the treatment accordingly,” says Erik Frank, an ant
researcher. The ants are territorial (有领土意识的) and might sustain
injuries while defending their homes. So, the researchers wondered if
the species had methods for dealing with infected wounds.
They discovered that when a worker ant injured its leg’s upper part,
companions would perform amputations. These other ants would then
spend about six minutes on average biting at the upper part until it came
off.“I find it striking to what extent they take concerted (同心协力
的) action in this amputation event,” Frank says.“You can see it
presenting the injured leg, and the other ant, for many minutes at a
time, is biting it violently and the injured ant doesn’t seem to
complain.”
The researchers wondered if the amputations could serve to prevent
infections. To test this, they wounded some ants’ legs. They isolated
(隔离) some, ensuring they would receive no care, performed their
own amputations on others and returned a third group to the colony. The
experiments showed ants with upper-leg injuries that were isolated died
about 60% of the time, while ants that received surgeries, either from
the researchers or from fellow ants, almost always lived. The
experiments also confirmed the ants didn’t perform amputations for those
with lower-leg injuries. But the others would lick (舔舐) the
wounds. They had an approximately 75% survival rate, compared to a
15% survival rate for isolated ants with lower-leg injuries.
Florida carpenter ants have muscles responsible for blood circulation
in their upper legs, so upper-leg injuries could reduce circulation.
Lower circulation would, in turn, reduce the spread of infection, buying the ants time to perform amputations. The researchers found amputations for lower-leg wounds only improved survival chances if they were performed immediately. The ants don’t perform blanket amputation on any injury — they only do so when it’d make sense.

32. Why do the ants bite off the injured legs of their companions?
( )
A. To save their lives.
B. To compete for territory.
C. To check their injuries.
D. To force them to work.
33. What’s Frank’s opinion about the injured ants receiving an
amputation?( )
A. They’re unwilling.
B. They know nothing about it.
C. They enjoy it so much.
D. They’re cooperative.

34. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about concerning the amputation?
( )
A. Different roles ants play in it.
B. Actions each ant makes for it.
C. The various death rates it causes.
D. The experiments about its function.

Starting from Small Things to Protect the Environment
Starting from Small Things to Protect the Environment
Yesterday afternoon, our class held a class meeting themed
“Protecting the Environment, Starting from Small Things”.
During the meeting, we first watched a video showing the serious
pollution problems our planet faces. Then, we discussed practical ways
to help, such as reducing waste by reusing items, saving water and
electricity, and using public transportation. Some students also shared
their experiences of planting trees and sorting garbage.
This activity made me realize that even small actions can make a big
difference. From now on, I will try my best to live an eco-friendly life
and encourage others to do the same.

When I adopted Max, he was found
trapped in a tied black trash bag by a garbage truck. A kind worker saw
the bag moving and used a tool to tear open the bag to look inside. There
was my shaking puppy dog. The tool hurt him a little, making him walk
with a small limp, but he could run as fast as lightning.
For Max’s first birthday, we joined a 3 km fun run by an animal
help group. I’m not much of a runner, but the run was only 3
kilometers, so I thought it would be fun for both of us. We practiced for
weeks. On our practice runs, Max wagged his tail wildly and usually
dragged me along behind him. I worked on his leash(拴狗链)manners
so that he wouldn’t trip me on the big day. I felt we were ready for
anything.
The fun run was downtown among the big buildings. When the race
started loudly, the loud barks from other dogs scared Max. He had
trouble running in the right direction with all the confusion around
us. But soon the runners began to spread out, Max was running straight
and fast. We were passing people and making great time. I was
dreaming of a gold-medal finish.
However, near the end, Max suddenly stopped and dropped to the
ground, pulling the leash hard enough to almost hurt my shoulder. At
first, I thought something bad had happened to him. He was shaking
and sobbing. I did a quick check and couldn’t see anything wrong. I
tried to get him up, but he refused. The police officer doing traffic
control impatiently signaled me to move away so the traffic could pass.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Max lay frozen on the ground, refusing to move.
The garbage truck’s roaring engine suddenly explained everything.
Max lay frozen on the ground, refusing to move. The harder I tried
to scoop him up from the pavement, the more he fought me. With the
officer yelling and cars honking, I pulled him with all my strength, but
in vain. Finally, I got my arm under him and lifted him up in a
fireman’s carry, throwing him over my shoulder. As I staggered to the
roadside, people around were taking my dog’s side, laughing. I was
running him too hard. I was overwhelmed with anger. My dog would
run all day long and he wasn’t the least bit tired.
The garbage truck’s roaring engine suddenly explained everything.
Its sound must have hit my dog’s sensitive ears, so he cried louder and clawed at my back as we drew closer to it. I held on tighter and ran as fast as I could to get my sweet baby dog away from that scary garbage truck. I ran with him on my shoulder until I felt he relaxed, and then I set him down. He wagged his tail in gratitude for saving him from the garbage truck. Surely, we didn’t win any medals, but I won his trust forever.
