Everyone in my class loves his movies 14 HOW DO I KNOW MY STUDENTS? As an educator, I am often asked how I know what is going on in the minds of my students. Many students are quite shy and don’t speak all that much. At the same time①, in a classroom of more than forty students, it is hard to have many one-on-one conversations with each person. So, how can I really know what makes each student tick? My answer? I look at their body language. It is easy to recognize when students are interested in a lesson. Most tend to look up and make eye contact②. When I make a joke, they smile. When I talk about something difficult, they look confused. I know when students are really interested, however, because they lean forward③ and look at me. People have a tendency④ to lean towards whatever they are interested in. [1]So if a student has his head lowered⑤ to look at his watch, it implies he is bored and just counting the minutes for the class to end. If two friends are leaning their heads together, they are probably writing notes to each other. Of course, 英 语·选择性必修第一册 目 录 not everyone who looks up is paying attention in class. Some students look up, but there is an absence of eye contact⑥. Their eyes barely move, and they always have the same distant expression on their faces. [2]It is as though they are asleep with their eyes open. Some students are amused by something else. They spend all their time looking anywhere but⑦ at me. Then again, some students’ favourite activity is daydreaming. [3]With their chins on their hands⑧, they occupy themselves by staring out of the window or up at the ceiling. They are certainly interested in something, but who knows what. The main thing is reminding distracted students⑨ that they need to pay attention in class. [4]While it is easy to perceive when students are interested, bored, or distracted, it is sometimes much harder to distinguish when students are troubled. [5]Students who are angry, afraid, or experiencing anxiety may have their arms crossed⑩ in front of their chests and their legs closed or crossed, like they are guarding their bodies. [6]Students who are sad or worried will nearly always wear a frown⑪. They may also hide their faces in their hands⑫ like they are embarrassed or ashamed. Some students act this way merely because they are afraid of being called on by the teacher. However, 英 语·选择性必修第一册 目 录 if a student does not bother to brush her hair and her eyes are red from weeping⑬, then I can infer that there are deeper issues at work. It could be that she is having serious conflicts with other students or at home. Whatever it is, I know I need to inquire and assess what is going on. [7]Ultimately, my duty is helping every student to learn. [8]Their body language lets me know when to adjust class activities, when to intervene, and when to talk to students individually, so they can all get the most out of ⑭ school. Reacting to body language is an important component of being a teacher. 句[6]中wear a frown和hide their faces in their hands从“神态+动 作”双重维度描写“悲伤/担忧”,符合高考“细节描写加分”原则。 阅读词汇 1. the whole incident 整个 2. at the trial 在 中 3. on his twin sister’s face 在他 姐姐的脸上 4. internal thoughts 想法 5. tend to slump 往往会 6. with one’s chins on one’s hands 手托着 7. when to intervene 什么时候 8. an important component 一个重要的 事件 审判 双胞胎 内心 垂头弯腰地走 下巴 干预 组成部分 9. in a soft, forgiving tone 2. our head or body forward 把我们的头或身体前倾 3. the situation 暴露处境 4. any misunderstandings 澄清任何误解 5. one’s head 低头 6. at the 盯着天花板 7. be easy to 容易察觉 8. have one’s arms crossed in front of one’s 双臂交叉于胸前 9. one’s eyes out 哭得泪流满面 10. feel 感到羞愧 11. settle a 解决冲突 pose bend reveal clarify lower stare ceiling perceive chests weep ashamed conflict 英 语·选择性必修第一册 目 录 Ⅲ. 1. ①lower blood pressure ②lower his head ③at a lower price 2. ①adjust oneself to the new surroundings ②adjust the height
