(2026•河南许昌高二期末)A dozen children ran around laughing and playing in my friend’s yard, while we parents sat chatting. The barbecue (烧烤架) had been cleared away when our host announced a surprise.A huge truck backed up the long, narrow driveway.Adults and children watched with curiosity as the driver got out and slowly raised a huge rock wall.
The kids lined up to try it.They climbed to the top and rang the bell that hung at the highest point.Three people could climb side by side and talk to each other, so gradually the adults tried it, too.
“Let’s go get in line,” my husband Neil said.“No, you go ahead without me.” I had good excuses.I didn’t have the right shoes; I forgot my sunglasses.I watched everyone else having fun, though, and finally convinced myself to try it.A belt was wrapped around me so there was no way to fall.Concentrating on each foothold, I slowly made my way up.Within a few minutes, I made it to the top and proudly rang the bell.“Way to go, Col!” Neil shouted.
I enjoyed my success and the amazing view of fields and farmland until I realized it was time to go down.I willed my hands to let go of the ledges (突出物), but I couldn’t move. This is ridiculous (可笑的), I thought.Everyone below recognized my fear and called up all sorts of recommendations.
“Move your right hand down three inches!”
“Just hold the rope and jump. You can’t fall!”
All well-intentioned advice, but I still couldn’t move. Then my husband was suddenly next to me on the wall.
“Hi,” he said.“Need some help?”
“I don’t see how you can help. You can’t carry me down.”
“Okay, then let’s just sit here and chat for a while,” he said.“Did you have any of Dawn’s barbecue beans? They were delicious.”
“They were good, but my favorite was the honeyed melon balls.” We chatted about the party for a few minutes.

参考范文:
After a while, he said, “Col, brush that fly away from your head.” Instinctively, I reached up my hand to wave the fly away.As I did so, I realized I had loosened my grip on the ledge.“Good! Now move your left foot down a bit,” Neil encouraged gently.I hesitated for a moment but then followed his instruction. With this small movement, I started to gain a bit of confidence. The fear that had frozen me in place began to ease.
So it went, and with each step he pointed out something lovely to distract me.“Look at how the sunlight sparkles on the pond over there,” he said.I turned my head to glance at the pond, and as I did, I moved another hand down.He continued, “And see how the kids are playing with the puppies in the yard.So full of energy.” With his words guiding me and distractions helping me relax, I gradually made my way down the rock wall. Finally, my feet touched the ground, and I let out a sigh of relief, grateful to Neil for his smart way of helping.
