Section Ⅴ LESSON 3 SO CLOSE, YET SO FAR
Mark never stops socialising with① his friends online. But he’s also never felt more alone②.
Where am I? What am I doing? [1]If you’re one of my 500 friends online, you’ll always be the first to know. My phone and laptop are never out of touching distance③, so I’m constantly posting updates④ on social media⑤ — whether I’m having a coffee, on my way to⑥ school, watching TV ...even when I’m in the shower. As soon as I open my eyes in the morning, I check through⑦ all my social networking apps, read my emails and answer text messages.I do the same thing all over again while I’m having breakfast.
I live in a university dorm with a couple of great roommates.I have a never-ending flow of messages and updates from all the people I associate with⑧ online.Yet the truth of the matter is:I feel lonely.
[2]I’m barely the only person who feels this way⑨.[3]According to research, over two-thirds of young people find it easier to make friends online than it is “in real life”. I’m way beyond⑩ a shy or reserved person, but I’m wired up every day, like most of my friends. On the surface⑪, I have an active social life.I attend parties and play sports but I’m always distracted. They say that phones bring people closer together but in reality⑫, my mind is always a million miles away⑬.I obsess over⑭ exactly how many followers I have on my account, but I can’t remember the birthdays of some of my oldest mates.
Social networking dominates my life in so many ways⑮.Sometimes I set deadlines for⑯ myself:I will start doing my homework at 8 pm, and aim to finish in two hours⑰. [4]At 7.50 pm, I’m still scrolling through my friends’ silly posts and photos. Before I know it, it’s 9.30 pm and I still haven’t moved an inch from the sofa.I download song after song, video after video, but I’m not really paying attention⑱.The stimulation is in chasing after⑲ the next song rather than⑳ truly enjoying it.[5]My friends try to drag me away from㉑ my phone, but as soon as I’m alone again, I’m desperate to㉒ get back to㉓the online world and the intense activity that it provides.
I constantly feel depressed㉔, dissatisfied and alone. Since I spend so much time socialising online, I keep delaying things that are important in my real life:homework, tasks, connecting with㉕ my friends and family members in a meaningful way.[6]It’s funny that my friends and I chatter away㉖ online so much, but we end up having㉗ nothing to say when we meet.
在第二个并列分句中,as soon as引导时间状语从句,that it provides为限制性定语从句。
A few days ago, I went out for a dinner get-together with some friends. My best friend left the table for 30 minutes because he had to take a call㉘.Some spent the dinner bending over㉙ their phones, texting friends online but ignoring the ones who sat right in front of them. And the extraordinary thing is nobody thought this was rude; it’s just how life is nowadays. On a family holiday last summer, my sister spent all her time complaining that she needed to charge her phone.[7]When it was charged, she just spent hours reading about her favourite popstar; not once did she lift her head to enjoy the view outside her window.
[8]What is really worrying is that no one I know, including myself, could go cold turkey. I can’t even imagine going㉚ without social networking for a week — think of all the important appointments, invitations and news updates you would miss! Alcoholics who want to quit drinking can avoid booze, but how do we give up㉛ our phones? After all㉜, I need it for my studies because my teachers and classmates need to contact me at any time.
So, that’s the problem with social networking. We’re hard-wired in, but we’re more disconnected than ever.

Ⅲ.讨论
1.Why does Mark say “They say that phones bring people closer together but in reality,my mind is always a million miles away.” in paragraph 3?Find examples from the passage to illustrate how phones drive people further away.
Because he does not talk to his friends face to face when he attends parties or plays sports.Examples:
①I obsess over exactly how many followers I have on my account, but I can’t remember the birthdays of some of my oldest mates.②Some spent the dinner bending over their phones, texting friends online but ignoring the ones who sat right in front of them.
2.How do you understand “We are hard-wired in,but we’re more disconnected than ever.” in the last paragraph? Why does Mark say we are more disconnected than ever?
Mark suggests that young people today have been brought up with social networking and that they are an important part of our lives which we can’t live without. However, our addiction to social networking can lead to a loss of friendships or meaningful relationships due to less face-to-face contact in real life.

A
It usually takes a generation or two to measure the full effects of changes in technology and the influence that these changes have on our lives.
We have just gone through another industrial revolution (变革) with the creation of the Internet. You wouldn’t know life before the Internet, but it is very different now.Just like when I was a kid, I wouldn’t have known what life was like before television. However, the fact is that we are seeing what is happening now before our very eyes.It is all mostly good, but some of it has a bad influence as well.
The past years has seen the rise of social media as the source of communication and information. Our little handheld phones have become our window to the world round the clock, where people can share experiences with others all around the planet.
But as with most things, we have seen the downsides of social media. The spreading of false news, online bullying (欺凌), and unpleasant images are just some of the downsides.
We are seeing young people losing themselves in their screens by checking things on social media or having thoughts of self-harm.Older generations say “just turn off the phone”, but they don’t realize that young people are conditioned to live in that online world and it is impossible to turn it off.
That is why the government is now looking for the prevention by different means. And one of them is raising the age limits for social media users. But how would that work? I find it fun to think that my older Boomer generation is going to try to block social media access and outsmart these teens. We know who will win that one! But as I said at the start, we are seeing the effects of this technology after a couple of generations and we need to do something about it.

The study carried out a survey of 2,000 families in the UK with children between eight and 16 years old.One in three families said they sit down to enjoy a family meal every day of the week, but 77% of these families also said they have phones out at the dinner table.Just over half of children use their devices while they’re eating, and many said they were attracted by eating in front of the TV.Children aren’t the only ones on their devices, though. The results found that two in five children have to ask their parents to put their phones down at the table.
Most of the children taking part in the survey want to have more conversations at the table.Lots of them enjoy debating different topics, including what’s in the news and what’s happening on the school playground. Also, 83% of children said they prefer having these conversations with their parents or guardians face to face instead of over the phone.
Making time to talk to other people and family members is really good for your wellbeing.Dr. Elizabeth Kilbey, a psychologist says family conversations during mealtimes strengthen relationships and build children’s confidence and communication skills. She explains, “Dinner time provides a powerful platform for essential conversations.”
Vanessa Harriss, editor of The Week Junior, agrees that conversations at the dinner table are really important for the whole family, whether it’s discussing everyone’s day or what’s going on in the world.“That’s why we’re launching our ‘Something worth talking about’ campaign,” she says.“We want to encourage all families to take time to talk.”
