The Oscars. The Booker prize. The Nobels. These awards are all
backward-looking, celebrating past achievements. But there is another
type of award, one that looks to the future — a challenge prize.Such
prizes don’t recognise past successes; rather, they inspire future ones.
The idea is simple: a challenge is selected — with a clear-cut
target — and a jackpot (赌注) is offered to whoever first reaches that
goal.Examples include the Longitude (经度) prize on antimicrobial
resistance (AMR) (耐药性), which has just awarded £8 million to
Sysmex Astrego for its PA-100 AST System, a rapid diagnostic test that
could transform the treatment of urinary tract infections
and so help tackle the rise of AMR.
The challenge prize format has a lot to offer.By opening the field to
the widest possible pool of inventors, it can inspire countless potential
solutions to a problem. These prizes also have the power to solve some of
the most pressing problems of the time.
Consider the original Longitude prize, launched in 1714 to tackle
the greatest scientific challenge of that century: how to effectively
measure longitude at sea.Without the ability to do this, many ships lost
their way and sank, so the British government established a prize of
£20,000 to award whoever could solve the problem.
The challenge was met by John Harrison for his chronometer. This
seafaring (航海) clock kept time to within 5 seconds on a rolling ship
on a transatlantic voyage. This allowed sailors to determine their exact
position, leading to safer shipping and opening up global trade routes.
Later, a 12,000-franc contest to find ways of preserving food for
Napoleon’s army led to the invention of tinned food.More recent
challenge prizes have focused on suborbital spaceflight, driverless cars
and robotics.
The Longitude prize on AMR attracted some 250 entries, so it is
thrilling now.A decade after the award was launched in 2014, Sysmex
Astrego’s system has won.The firm will receive millions, but it won’t
be the only beneficiary; it is society that will be an even bigger winner.

When Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield looked at Earth, tears
formed in his left eye.Within minutes, using the bridge of his nose like
a waterfall, the tears spilled into his right eye, until he couldn’t
see.Fear should have paralyzed (使……不知所措) Hadfield since he
was blind in space.Instead, Hadfield assessed his surroundings,
evaluated the risk, trusted his training, and continued his
spacewalk.Back in the spacecraft, he realized that an anti-fog solution
(防雾液) had stimulated his eyes.Luckily, they were fine after a
good cleaning.Hadfield returned to Earth with first-hand experience of
space psychology in action.
Space psychology, a vital long-term field of study at NASA (美
国宇航局), which refers to applying psychology to human
spaceflight, is gaining special importance as humans prepare for long-
distance space travel.Clearly, space psychology matters on the journey
to the Moon, Mars and beyond. But it can also help humans greatly as
we meet challenges in our lives.According to Hadfield, we can learn
from astronauts who practice what goes wrong and right, with the
following suggestions.
In the language system used by NASA, attitude refers to a
spacecraft’s positioning in 3D space.To reach a destination, the
spacecraft must be pointed in the right direction. They must have the
correct “attitude”.Hadfield suggests that we view life the way NASA
plans missions: with an attitude.Unexpected factors may change your
path, but with the proper mindset, they won’t change your course.
And, he classifies team members into three groups: Plus-ones
(the high-performers),Zeroes and Minus-ones (Liabilities 惹麻烦
的人).Hadfield encourages people to be Zeroes because they listen,
learn, and contribute without conflict.Zeroes help build consensus (共
识) in a group and have the potential to be plus-one performers.
Meanwhile, Hadfield said it’s important for astronauts to pay
attention to even the small things as ignoring them could be
dangerous. We can overcome our fears by learning as much as we can
about them. So, we should prepare for situations that we know will
make us anxious.Hadfield also suggests that we imagine what could go
wrong as a way to be better prepared.

Dear Jenny,
I’m writing to share my choice of debate topic.
I think “Is social media doing more harm than good to
teenagers?” is better. It’s a topic that every student can relate to, as
almost all of us use social media daily. We can easily find examples from
our own lives, like how some peers spend too much time scrolling and
neglect studies. Also, it helps us discuss what impact social media has
on our friendships and mental health. This topic not only sparks
interesting discussions but also makes us think more carefully about how
we use social media.
I’m sure it will be a great debate.

Li Hua

Emily Harper sat at her
desk, staring blankly at the math problems in front of her.Numbers and
variables danced confusingly across the page, laughing at her every
effort. At school, Emily was known for her artistic talents, but math
had always been her weakness. No matter how hard she tried, she just
couldn’t make sense of it.
Her struggles only worsened in the 10th grade. The pressure to keep
up with her classmates grew, and the poor grades shook her
confidence. Her parents decided to step in.“We need to find you some
help,” her mother gently suggested one evening.
Then came Mr Jenkins, a retired local teacher known for his unique
teaching style.Emily was initially resistant; the idea of spending extra
hours on a subject she hated seemed like a punishment. But she
unwillingly agreed, knowing something had to change.
Their first session was tense.Mr Jenkins, sensing her frustration,
didn’t dive straight into problems.Instead, he asked about her
interests. When Emily spoke passionately about her painting, he
smiled.“Math is like art, Emily. It has patterns and beauty if you
know where to look.”
Doubtful but inspired, Emily listened as he began to explain
concepts through visual examples. He used colors and shapes, turning
abstract numbers into something almost tangible (有形的).For the
first time, math seemed less like a foreign language and more like a
puzzle waiting to be solved.
However, progress was slow.Weeks passed with minimal
improvement, and Emily’s patience wore thin.A particularly difficult
quiz left her in tears, convinced she was sure to fail.“Remember,
Emily, every artist starts with a blank canvas. Masterpieces aren’t
created overnight.”Mr Jenkins said.
Encouraged by his firm belief, Emily pushed on.She began to see
the connections between the steps, how each there, celebrating her
successes, no matter how minor.

目 录
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

dreading them, she would actively seek solutions, applying the
techniques Mr Jenkins had taught her.She no longer saw math as an
insurmountable obstacle but as an exciting challenge. In class, she
began to volunteer answers, much to the surprise of her teachers and
classmates. Her after-school study sessions became a time of
exploration rather than frustration. She would spend hours practicing,
often losing track of time as she delved deeper into the world of numbers.
Emily’s heart raced when the results day arrived. She had worked so
hard, and the thought of seeing if it had paid off filled her with both
excitement and anxiety. As she opened the envelope containing her math
test results, her eyes widened.A broad smile spread across her
face. She had passed with flying colors! She couldn’t wait to tell Mr
Jenkins. His unwavering belief in her and his unique teaching methods
had finally borne fruit. This achievement was not just a victory in math
but a testament to her own perseverance and the power of a great teacher.
