Categories are useful. A field notebook divided into “tree”, “insect” and “bird” lets an observer organise hundreds of details. A label can also direct attention: once a learner knows that two leaves belong to the same group, their different edges may become easier to compare. How to Write a Field Note You Can Trust
A useful field note allows another person—including your future self—to understand what happened without borrowing your memory. Begin with the setting. He had marked the pots, but not the tray or shelf. He had also photographed from slightly different places each day. The neat pattern in his first week was real, yet his method could not explain Monday's result.
Meilin suggested repeating the observation with clearer position marks. There was not enough time to grow new plants, but they could document how they improved the method. Ellis hesitated. A display about an error seemed far less impressive than a newly discovered rule.
