When I was a child in Montreal, the encyclopedia (百科全书) was the main way to get knowledge. I once wrote a report about snakes with the help of Encyclopedia Britannica. From it, I learned that the king cobra lives about 20 years and that its enemy is the mongoose. The pictures of those snakes are still clear in my memory. My dream at that time was to own a set of Britannica, though it seemed impossible with my pocket money.
Years later, in the 1980s, I finally had enough money. Wanting my children to enjoy what I had missed, I spent more than $2,000 on a complete Britannica. The day it arrived, I felt like I had won a great prize. I proudly placed the thirty volumes (册) on the shelf and opened them happily. At last, the knowledge I had longed for was mine.
But time changes everything. With the rise of the Internet, Britannica became unnecessary. As I began to downsize, I tried to pass the books to my grown children. They laughed and refused, comparing them to the old telephone booths (电话亭).
Then, I got in touch with some charities They showed no interest in them, either. Sadly, I threw part of my childhood dream into the waste container. Watching those heavy books disappear made me sad.
Today, knowledge is at our fingertips through Google and other online tools. Yet when I found my old World Book, Bananas to Brains, I kept it. Torn and faded, it makes me remember the days when knowledge was hard to get, valuable, and deeply loved.
24.Why did the author buy Britannica in the 1980s?
A.To meet her children’s needs. B.To add to her collection.
C.To encourage her children to read books. D.To realize her childhood dream.
25.What did the author’s children think of Britannica?
A.Costly. B.Difficult. C.Useless. D.Valuable.
26.What did the author do with her Britannica set in the end?
A.She sold it at a low price. B.She gave it to charities.
C.She threw it away sadly. D.She passed it down to her children.
27.What would be a suitable title for the text?
A.The End of a Knowledge Time B.The History of the Encyclopedia
C.Education in the Internet Age D.A Treasure Saved from Waste

What’s the worst kind of sleep for your health: the kind where you keep a right bedtime but wake up every few hours, or the kind where you go to bed late and only get a few hours of shut-eye? Scientists might finally have an answer.
Patrick Finan and his team carried out a study comparing the two types of sleep in a group of 62 healthy men and women who were good sleepers. The participants (参与者) spent three days and nights in a sleep lab and answered questions about their mood (情绪) every evening before sleeping. While they slept, the researchers measured their sleep stages (阶段) so they could document when and how much of each stage of sleep, from light to deeper sleep, each volunteer got every night. A third of the group were arranged to be woken up several times a night, another third were not allowed to go to sleep until later but weren’t woken up, and the final group, which acted as the control group, was allowed to sleep without being interrupted (打断) through the night.
When Finan compared the three groups’ mood ratings, he found that the interrupted and short sleepers both showed drops in positive mood after the first night. But on the next nights, the interrupted sleepers continued to report diminishing positive feelings while the short sleepers did not — they stayed at about the same level they had reported after the first night.
When he studied the brain of interrupted sleepers and short sleepers, he found that those who woke up repeatedly showed less deep sleep that is usually connected with feeling relaxed, than those getting the same sleep but in a continuous time.
The finding suggests how everything from stress to anxiety can affect both sleep and mood. You can’t avoid the stresses in your daily life, but you just might be able to lessen the blow with sleep — as long as it’s uninterrupted.
28.How did the researchers measure participants’ sleep stages?
A.By asking questions after sleeping. B.By examining their health condition.
C.By waking them up from time to time. D.By recording time and length of their sleep.
29.What does the underlined word “diminishing” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Falling. B.Disappearing. C.Erupting. D.Growing.
30.What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A.Deep sleep has no effect on mood. B.Short sleepers have a smarter brain.
C.Interrupted sleepers feel more relaxed. D.Interrupted sleep is worse than short sleep.
31.What can we do with the stresses according to the finding?
A.Stay in a good mood. B.Have uninterrupted sleep.
C.Keep away from troubles. D.Manage free time properly

Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine. The new study was carried out by researchers from the University of British Columbia.
The study used information collected from more than 28,000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018.The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time (屏幕设备使用时间) after school, including how much time they spent swiping their mobile phone. watching TV, Netflix, or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programs. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级).
Some of the results were expected, researchers said in the study. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety (焦虑) compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time,67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic (学业的) development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
32.What were the students asked to do after they reported time spent on after-school activities?
A.Talk about their lifestyles. B.Introduce their after-school activities.
C.Report their mental states on a scale. D.Answer questions about screen time use.
33.What do the researchers find about teenage girls?
A.They often have higher levels of satisfaction.
B.They take more active part in after-school activities.
C.They have lower levels of anxiety.
D.Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
34.What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4?
A.Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B.High screen time is common among teenagers.
C.No after-school activities mean no screen time.
D.Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
35.Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study?
A.They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
B.They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
C.They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D.They allow teenagers to become better learners.

Guiding Children in Choosing After-school Activities
Many children today face stress from school, friends, or competition. Nina Kaiser, a licensed psychologist based in San Francisco, reminds parents that after-school activities should not add more pressure. 36 . Kaiser points out, “Younger kids often try many activities because they are still finding out what they like — and that is normal.” So how can parents help their children choose the right activities?
To begin with, parents should allow children to join in the decision-making. 37 . When they feel that their voices are heard, they often show more energy and excitement toward the activity.
Next, it is necessary to value each child’s personal interests. Every child has different hobbies and talents (天资). If parents force them to do something they dislike, children may feel stressed or upset. 38 . This will make learning easier and more enjoyable.
39 . Sometimes children may want to give up on an activity. Parents do not need to decide right away. Instead, they should talk with the child, wait patiently, and think of possible changes. Through discussion, both sides can find a solution together.
Lastly, parents should avoid putting too much pressure. Not every child will find his or her passion (爱好) right away. It is normal for children to face difficulties at the beginning, especially when they are still learning. 40 .
A.What matters is to study something useful
B.Parents shouldn’t allow them to drop the activity
C.Another key point is to keep open communication
D.Instead, they should give children the chance to learn and grow
E.With patience and support, they will finally find what they love
F.Even younger kids can share their thoughts about what they enjoy
G.A better way is to choose an activity that fits their ability and interest

On a bright, sunny day, my friend and I decided to have a hike up the nearby mountain. The weather was fine, with a gentle breeze (微风) and a clear blue sky overhead. We were having a great time in nature, looking at all the green plants and colorful flowers around us. As we climbed higher, we chatted about our plans for the future and shared laughter at our shared memories.
Suddenly, we heard a weak sound coming from a nearby bush. Curious, we approached as quietly as a mouse and discovered a small bird with an injured wing. It was clear that the bird was in trouble, and we really wanted to help. However, every time we tried to approach the bird, it would fly away in fear, staying away from us.
Deciding to save the little bird, my friend had an idea. He reached into his backpack and pulled out a small piece of fruit and bread that he had packed for our hike. Gently, he placed the foods near the bush, hoping they would get the bird to come closer.
At first, the bird remained careful, its eyes darting (转动) between us and the foods. Slowly, hunger seemed to overcome its fear, and it hopped towards the foods, carefully pecking at (啄食) the foods. My friend and I stayed very still, not wanting to frighten it away again.

【答案】24.D 25.C 26.C 27.A
根据第一段中“My dream at that time was to own a set of Britannica, though it seemed impossible with my pocket money.(那时我的梦想是拥有一套《大英百科全书》,但靠我的零花钱,这似乎遥不可及。)”以及第二段中“Years later, in the 1980s, I finally had enough money. Wanting my children to enjoy what I had missed, I spent more than $2,000 on a complete Britannica.(多年后,在20世纪80年代,我终于有了足够的钱。为了让我的孩子们享受我所错过的,我花了2000多美元买了一套完整的《大英百科全书》。)”可知,作者在20世纪80年代买《大英百科全书》是为了实现她儿时的梦想。故选D。
25.推理判断题。根据第三段中“With the rise of the Internet, Britannica became unnecessary. As I began to downsize, I tried to pass the books to my grown children. They laughed and refused, comparing them to the old telephone booths (电话亭).(随着互联网兴起,《大英百科全书》变得不再必要。后来我开始整理物品、精简家当,便想把这些书传给已经成年的孩子们。他们笑着拒绝了,还把这些书比作老旧的电话亭。)”可知,作者的孩子认为《大英百科全书》是没用的。故选C。
26.细节理解题。根据第四段中“Sadly, I threw part of my childhood dream into the waste container.(无奈之下,我把童年梦想的一部分扔进了垃圾箱。)”
通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中“When I was a child in Montreal, the encyclopedia was the main way to get knowledge.(当我还是个孩子的时候,在蒙特利尔,百科全书是获取知识的主要途径。)”、第四段中“Sadly, I threw part of my childhood dream into the waste container.(无奈之下,我把童年梦想的一部分扔进了垃圾箱。)” 可知,A选项“The End of a Knowledge Time(一个知识时代的终结)”最符合文章标题。故选A。
C
【答案】28.D 29.A 30.D 31.B
由文章第二段中“While they slept, the researchers measured their sleep stages (阶段) so they could document when and how much of each stage of sleep, from light to deeper sleep, each volunteer got every night. (在他们睡觉时,研究人员测量了他们的睡眠阶段,以便记录从浅睡到深睡,每个志愿者每晚每个睡眠阶段的时间和程度)”可知,研究人员是通过记录和测量参与者睡眠的时间和长度来评估他们的睡眠阶段的。故选D。
29.词句猜测题。根据第三段“But on the next nights, the interrupted sleepers continued to report diminishing positive feelings while the short sleepers did not — they stayed at about the same level they had reported after the first night. (但在接下来的夜晚,中断睡眠者继续报告积极感受diminishing,而短睡眠者的情绪则保持在第一个晚上后所报告的大致水平)”结合while表示对比可知,短睡眠者在第二个晚上的报告和第一个晚上大致相当,而中断睡眠者继续报告积极感受减少。因此,diminishing在此处意为“减少的,下降的”,与Falling“减少,下降”意思相符。故选A。
根据第四段中的“When he studied the brain of interrupted sleepers and short sleepers, he found that those who woke up repeatedly showed less deep sleep that is usually connected with feeling relaxed, than those getting the same sleep but in a continuous time.(当他研究睡眠被打断的人和睡眠不足的人的大脑时,他发现那些反复醒来的人比那些连续睡眠但时间相同的人表现出更少的深度睡眠,而深度睡眠通常与放松的感觉有关)”可知,本段主要强调了中断的睡眠对放松和深度睡眠的负面影响,表明它比单纯的睡眠不足更为不利。故选D。
根据文章最后一段中的“You can’t avoid the stresses in your daily life, but you just might be able to lessen the blow with sleep-as long as it’s uninterrupted. (你无法避免日常生活中的压力,但或许可以通过不间断的睡眠来减轻其影响)”可知,我们可以通过保证不间断的睡眠来应对压力。故选B。
D

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

At home, we took good care of the bird.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After a few minutes, the bird seemed to realize that we were not a threat. It began to eat more freely, and we were able to get closer within arm’s reach. At this time, my friend caught the bird quickly. The bird struggled in the hand, trying to fly away. Gently, we examined its injury, and then we wrapped a soft cloth around the bird. We decided to give up walking forward and take the bird home.
At home, we took good care of the bird. First, we cleaned the bird’s wound, and then we provided it with food and water. Over the next few days, the bird’s trust in us grew. It would allow us to touch its feathers and seemed to rely on our care. As the bird’s wing healed, we knew that eventually, we would have to release it back into the wild. On another fine day for hiking, we set the bird free at the same place where we saved it. We cherished the bond we had formed. Our mountain adventure was a journey of friendship and a reminder of the fine connection between humans and the natural world.
