Over nearly 70 years of public broadcasting, naturalist Sir David Attenborough (UK) has entertained and educated generations of viewers about our world and its plants and animals. As he turns 100, let’s take a look at some of his most influential documentaries, and we will find we owe him much respect.
Ocean with David Attenborough
At the heart of Ocean with David Attenborough is the role the world’s oceans play in sustaining life on earth. He begins by reflecting on the most striking underwater phenomena he’s encountered during his career and ends with the effect human activities have had on these delicate habitats and the populations they sustain. However, the naturalist also strikes a note of hope, showcasing protection projects and examples of sustainable practice that are helping oceans recover their health and biodiversity.
Planet Earth I, II and III
First broadcast in 2006, Planet Earth takes viewers on a journey through the planet’s last true wildernesses. Returning 10 years later, Planet Earth II details how fast the planet has changed with climate change, and the ever more extreme lengths animals must go to in order to survive. Another decade later, Planet Earth III covers more than 43 countries over five years, focusing on various wildlife across the seven continents.
Blue Planet I and II
Billed as “the first-ever comprehensive series on the natural history of the world’s oceans”, the 2001 and 2017 Blue Planet provide pioneering insight into marine life. Until the first series was released, several species, including the Dumbo octopus and hairy angelfish, had never been captured on camera before. The second series revisits seas and oceans to see the effects of plastic and chemical pollution on marine ecosystems and the diversity of marine life that we stand to lose as a result.
21. What does Ocean with David Attenborough focus on?
A. Rare phenomena in the deep sea. B. Human activities in animal habitats.
C. Programs on biodiversity protection. D. Oceans’ impact on the global ecosystem.
22. In which documentary can you find some previously unseen creatures?
A. Planet Earth I B. Planet Earth III
C. Blue Planet I D. Blue Planet II
23. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To list Attenborough’s achievements. B. To pay honor to Attenborough’s devotion.
C. To advertise Attenborough’s hottest works. D. To compare Attenborough’s documentaries.
B
Years ago, I left a demanding consulting job for something even more challenging — teaching. I became a math teacher for 7th graders at a New York City public school. And like any other teacher, I made quizzes (测验) and tests. When students handed in their papers, I marked them and recorded students’ scores. What I noticed was that IQ wasn’t the only difference between my best and worst students. Some of my best performers didn’t have great IQ scores. Some of my smartest kids weren’t doing so well. That got me thinking.
After several more years of teaching, I came to realize that what we need in education is a much better understanding of students and learning from a motivational and psychological point of view. In education, the one thing we can measure best is IQ. But what if doing well in school and in life depends on much more than your ability to learn quickly and easily?
So I quit teaching to become a psychologist. I started observing kids and adults in all kinds of really difficult situations, and in each study I wanted to know: Who succeeds here and why?
My research team and I went to a school. We tried to predict which students would finish military training and which would drop out. We also studied first-year teachers working in very difficult neighborhoods, asking which teachers would still be here by the end of the school year. Across all those different situations, one quality stood out as what set apart those who made it. It wasn’t social intelligence. It wasn’t good looks, physical health, and it wasn’t IQ. It turned out to be persistence.
We know so much about IQ — how to measure it, how to rank it, how to debate its limitation — but when it comes to persistence, we are only just beginning. That’s the work ahead of us. We need to take our best ideas and our strongest intuitions (直觉), and we need to put them to the test. We need to measure whether we’ve succeeded, and we have to be willing to fail, to be wrong, and to start over again with lessons learned.
24. What made the author confused after he recorded students’ scores?
A. Teaching was more tiring than consulting. B. Students’ IQ levels were hard to measure.
C. High-IQ students might not perform well. D. Some students put little effort into quizzes.
25. Why did the author quit teaching to become a psychologist?
A. To figure out what contributes to success.
B. To design standard tests for measuring students’ IQ.
C. To study whether IQ determines people’s achievements.
D. To learn more about students’ psychology and motivation.
26. How did the author reach the conclusion in paragraph 4?
A. By analyzing reasons for quitting. B. By reviewing psychological theories.
C. By studying people in tough conditions. D. By comparing people’s different choices.
27. What can we learn about persistence from the research?
A. It is a key quality to achieve success. B. It needs to be tested in more research.
C. It has been as fully understood as IQ. D. It works with high IQ to bring success.
C
Covered by thick forest canopies (树冠层), large areas of the Amazon rainforest remain mysterious, but scientists still wonder how much carbon these forests can absorb and store if kept undamaged. This matters because carbon is a primary greenhouse gas fueling climate change. Meanwhile, deforestation continues — about 20 million acres disappear yearly. Tara O’Shea from Stanford’s Natural Climate Solutions Initiative notes, “Because we don’t measure these forests properly, people turn them into farms or mines instead.”
To solve this problem, O’Shea and her team developed a new digital system. It uses satellites, remote sensing and artificial intelligence to produce 30-meter precision maps. These maps show tree height, canopy coverage and above-ground carbon content. Tested against NASA data, the system proves reliable across large areas. It monitors changes in forest biomass and carbon storage, creating a measurement tool that policymakers can trust.
This technology can make carbon markets more transparent. It helps developing countries get climate funds by protecting forests and restoring damaged ones. It also allows enterprises to obtain carbon credits. However, the system alone cannot solve everything. It needs support from both governments and private investors to work effectively.
The Natural Climate Solutions Initiative brings Stanford scholars together with experts from various fields. It aims to show the climate benefits that natural ecosystems provide, such as soil and wetlands. It also pushes for sustainable management of these resources. Chris Field, director of Stanford Woods Institute, emphasizes, “Credibility unlocks the potential of natural climate solutions. Without it, nature cannot compete financially.”
O’Shea concludes, “Natural climate solutions have enormous potential — but without credibility, they are on the sidelines.” Experts agree that proper policy and accurate risk assessment are needed to attract investment, carry these solutions into real practice and empower nature in the climate fight.
28. What do scientists want to know about the Amazon rainforest?
A. Its destruction severity. B. Its carbon storage ability.
C. Its coverage of canopies. D. Its impact on climate change.
29. What role does the new digital system mainly play?
A. Monitoring air quality. B. Mapping forest carbon content.
C. Collecting data on tree height. D. Measuring the expanse of the forest.
30. What does Chris Field’s words focus on about natural climate solutions?
A. The need to involve more experts. B. Choices of new research methods.
C. The key to their potential application. D. Factors affecting their competitiveness.
31. What does the underlined phrase “on the sidelines” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Hardly put to use. B. Greatly changed.
C. Generally undervalued. D. Closely monitored.

In the corners of social media dominated by wellness content, influencers recommend various treatments and products for losing weight, fighting exhaustion, and achieving other health goals. Some approaches may be helpful, but many blow up overnight and fade just as fast, with little evidence to back them up, medical experts say. Some influencers urge the followers to avoid certain foods like seed oils, while others push extreme diets, such as meat-heavy ones. Admittedly, alternative health practices lacking medical backing have long existed in popular culture. Yet the large amount of online advice has led to calls for safeguards and has even gained some mainstream acceptance.
Most influencers have or want business relationships with companies that allow them to earn income by promoting products. The arrangements don’t necessarily mean wellness content creators disbelieve in what they’re marketing, but they do have an interest in publicizing products that may or may not work. Creators can get paid for pictures or videos that promote a product and also earn a share of the sales through features such as special tracking links.
Experts note it’s therefore better to proceed with care when someone urges you to hit the “buy” button, whether it’s for natural supplements, teas that claim to help with weight loss or any other wellness products that show up in your social media feed.
Promoting dietary supplements has been a particularly profitable exercise for many influencers, said Timothy Caulfield, a health policy and law professor at the University of Alberta. He views the supplements industry as “the backbone” of health misinformation aimed at consumers and designed to generate billions of dollars in income. “It’s gotten to the point where if someone is selling a supplement, it’s a red flag,” he said. “I don’t think it was always like that, but it certainly is now.”
32. What phenomenon is presented in paragraph 1?
A. Weight loss products are popular with the public.
B. The followers are encouraged by experts online.
C. Healthy eating is frequently promoted by influencers.
D. Social media are flooded with wellness product promotions.
33. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. How influencers make profits. B. How influencers work with companies.
C. How influencers create wellness content. D. How social media help promote products.
34. What do experts suggest about buying wellness products?
A. Ignoring the social media feed. B. Being cautious when making purchases.
C. Choosing the most recommended products. D. Making natural supplements the top priority.
35. What can be inferred from Timothy Caulfield’s remarks?
A. The supplement industry deserves closer examination.
B. People have become wise consumers of health products.
C. Wellness influencers care about public health and profits.
D. Supplement companies provide useful health information.

Lily loved fixing things. Her father, a mechanic, had been teaching her to repair radios and toys since she was little. She would spend weekends working on old machines in her small bedroom, finding comfort in the rhythms of tools and gears (齿轮). The clicking of gears and the turning of wheels made her forget everything else. At school, however, she stayed quiet. Emma, a smart girl with a sharp tongue, often singled her out, rolling her eyes whenever Lily tried to voice her opinion.
One day, while cleaning the science lab, Lily accidentally knocked over Emma’s model car, on which she had spent weeks, breaking it into pieces on the floor. “My model car! You should have been more careful!” she screamed at Lily. Red-faced, Lily apologized and rushed out, fighting back her tears.
Two weeks later, when their teacher announced a robotics competition, the whole class came alive. “You’ll work in pairs to build a robot that can get through an obstacle course.” Emma was excited about building a robot, which was her long-held hobby. However, when she learned that Lily was her partner, she turned away, avoiding Lily’s eager eyes.
“Well, I can make it all,” Emma whispered. She turned to her notebook and focused on her design. In the following days, she simply ignored Lily’s attempts to approach, let alone their pair meetings as scheduled.
Sensing Emma’s unwillingness to cooperate, Lily decided to work on her own. She spent quite a lot of time sketching designs in the quiet lab. One afternoon, as she worked late, she noticed a half-built robot sitting in the corner, something Emma had started but left unfinished. She looked closer and froze. The wires had been connected the wrong way — if turned on, it might explode. Just as Lily reached out to examine it, the door opened.

I always dreamed of opening my own restaurant. I always loved cooking. So when it came time for college, I knew that the cooking institute was definitely the place for me, although a lot of my friends went to study computer and my father wanted me to study science. And when I graduated, I couldn’t wait to get started. Well, that was probably my first mistake. I didn’t go slowly. I picked a building for my restaurant in a residential neighborhood. I took great efforts in decoration. But the parking in the neighborhood was really difficult. I didn’t have enough regular customers, because people didn’t really drive by and see it. At first, I thought it was great not to have any competition, but I realize now that another restaurant or two would have brought people into the area. My other mistake was that I wanted to serve only the best and use organic food. Well, the problem with that was I had to charge a lot of money for the meals. That didn’t help business either. If I had only known then what I know now!

D 22. C 23. B

C 25. A 26. C 27. A
根据第一段“What I noticed was that IQ wasn’t the only difference between my best and worst students. Some of my best performers didn’t have great IQ scores. Some of my smartest kids weren’t doing so well. That got me thinking. (我注意到智商并不是区分好学生与差学生的唯一因素。一些表现优异的学生智商并不高,一些智商很高的孩子表现却不好。这引发了我的思考)”可知,令作者困惑的是高智商学生未必表现优异。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“I started observing kids and adults in all kinds of really difficult situations, and in each study I wanted to know: Who succeeds here and why? (我开始观察身处各种困境中的孩子和成年人,在每一项研究中我都想知道:谁能在这里取得成功,以及为什么?)”可知,作者转行做心理学家,目的是弄清楚促成成功的因素。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“I started observing kids and adults in all kinds of really difficult situations (我开始观察身处各种困境中的孩子与成年人)”以及第四段“Across all those different situations, one quality stood out as what set apart those who made it. (在所有这些不同的情境下,有一种特质让成功者脱颖而出)”可知,作者通过研究困境中的人得出该结论。
【27题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Across all those different situations, one quality stood out as what set apart those who made it. It wasn’t social intelligence. It wasn’t good looks, physical health, and it wasn’t IQ. It turned out to be persistence. (在所有这些不同的情境下,有一种特质让成功者脱颖而出——它不是社交智慧,也不是外貌、身体健康或智商。结果发现,这种特质是坚持力)”可知,毅力是获得成功的关键品质。
B 29. B 30. C 31. A
根据第一段中“Covered by thick forest canopies (树冠层), large areas of the Amazon rainforest remain mysterious, but scientists still wonder how much carbon these forests can absorb and store if kept undamaged.(亚马逊雨林的大片区域被茂密的森林树冠覆盖,仍然神秘莫测,但科学家们仍然想知道,如果不受破坏,这些森林可以吸收和储存多少碳)”可知,科学家想知道的是亚马逊雨林的碳储存能力。
根据第二段中“It uses satellites, remote sensing and artificial intelligence to produce 30-meter precision maps. These maps show tree height, canopy coverage and above-ground carbon content.(它利用卫星、遥感和人工智能生成30米精度的地图。这些地图显示了树木高度、树冠覆盖率和地上碳含量)”以及“It monitors changes in forest biomass and carbon storage, creating a measurement tool that policymakers can trust.(它监测森林生物量和碳储存的变化,创造了一个政策制定者可以信赖的测量工具)”可知,这个新数字系统的主要作用是绘制森林碳含量地图并进行监测。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中Chris Field的话“Credibility unlocks the potential of natural climate solutions. Without it, nature cannot compete financially.(可信度释放了自然气候解决方案的潜力。没有它,自然在财务上就无法竞争)”可知,他强调“可信度”是释放自然气候解决方案潜力的关键,即其潜在应用的关键所在。
【31题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段中“O’Shea concludes, “Natural climate solutions have enormous potential — but without credibility, they are on the sidelines.”(O’Shea总结道:“自然气候解决方案具有巨大的潜力,但如果没有可信度,它们就处于on the sidelines”)”可知,连词but表示转折,意味着如果没有可信度,这些方案即使有潜力也无法被实际应用或发挥作用。on the sidelines与A选项“Hardly put to use(几乎不被投入使用)”意思相符。
D

C. Choosing the most recommended products. D. Making natural supplements the top priority.
35. What can be inferred from Timothy Caulfield’s remarks?
A. The supplement industry deserves closer examination.
B. People have become wise consumers of health products.

D. Supplement companies provide useful health information.
D 33. A 34. B 35. A
根据第一段“In the corners of social media dominated by wellness content, influencers recommend various treatments and products for losing weight, fighting exhaustion, and achieving other health goals.
根据第二段“Most influencers have or want business relationships with companies that allow them to earn income by promoting products. The arrangements don’t necessarily mean wellness content creators disbelieve in what they’re marketing, but they do have an interest in publicizing products that may or may not work. Creators can get paid for pictures or videos that promote a product and also earn a share of the sales through features such as special tracking links.
根据第三段“Experts note it’s therefore better to proceed with care when someone urges you to hit the “buy” button, whether it’s for natural supplements, teas that claim to help with weight loss or any other wellness products that show up in your social media feed. (专家指出,当有人劝你点击“购买”按钮时,无论涉及的是天然补充剂、声称有助于减肥的茶饮,还是社交媒体上出现的其他健康产品,都应谨慎行事。)”可知,专家建议消费者面对社交平台推送的健康产品时,应当谨慎决策,不要盲目下单。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“He views the supplements industry as “the backbone” of health misinformation aimed at consumers and designed to generate billions of dollars in income. “It’s gotten to the point where if someone is selling a supplement, it’s a red flag,” he said. “I don’t think it was always like that, but it certainly is now.”

注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph1: Emma stood still in the doorway, eyes wide in surprise.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: On competition day, Emma and Lily presented a robot marked with their names.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Emma stood still in the doorway, eyes wide in surprise. “What are you doing with my robot?” she demanded. Lily stepped back. “I wasn’t messing it up! Look, the red and black wires are connected wrongly. If turned on, the circuit will overload and explode.” Emma hesitated, then bent down to check the wires. Her face turned pale. “You’re right. I was careless.” She glanced at Lily uneasily. “Why would you help me after what I did?” Lily smiled. “Because we’re partners. And I love fixing things.”
On competition day, they presented a robot marked with their names. It moved through the obstacle course smoothly, turning corners with precision and avoiding barriers. The audience cheered. Although they didn’t win first place, they earned a special award for “Best Collaboration.” Emma whispered, “Sorry for how I treated you. You’re amazing.” Lily grinned. “You’re a brilliant designer.
