She is putting coins into a saving jar. 2 Why is she doing this? She wants to save money for her wishes: ice cream, a cap and a schoolbag. A Dog Called Money is a popular children’s finance book written by German author Bodo Schäfer. It tells a warm and educational story about money, dreams and responsibility. The main character is Kira, a 12‑year‑old girl. Kira is a girl who wants to manage her pocket money well. She keeps her coins in a moneybox, a small tin. With her talking dog Money, she learns to budget carefully. They talk about her goals, from a new laptop to a trip abroad. Money teaches her to use spare money wisely. In the end, Kira learns that with good plans, she can get exactly what she wants. Read the brief introduction to the book. v. 成功应付, 得以对付过去 n. 存钱罐 n. 金属盒 v. 预算 n. 笔记本电脑,便携式电脑 adj. 备用的;多余的,闲置的 adv. 正是,不错 Read the title and the first sentence "“One of the best ways to get money is to use a dream tin". Guess: What might a "dream tin" be? Why is it related to getting money? What might a "dream tin" be? A jar where you keep a picture of your dream. A moneybox for a specific wish. A box where you write down what you want. A container that reminds you of your goal. A tin can (like a moneybox) that you label with a dream or wish you want to save money for. Why is it related to getting money? Because you put money into it. Because you save money for your dream. Because every time you see it, you want to add more money. You put all the money you have into the dream tin. Seeing your dream written on the tin helps you save instead of spending. Read the passage and find out how Money the dog helps Kira manage her money. 2 Money helps Kira by giving her advice on saving money for her dreams. He tells her to use spare tins as moneyboxes and write her dreams on them. He also says she should choose the most important wishes, not too many. Most importantly, he teaches her that the key is not how much money we have, but how we use it. He encourages her to learn how to manage money first, and then she will be able to have more. # wish list # dog # dream tin # trip abroad # managing money # laptop # dreamland # parents # problems Choose three tags for the main idea of the story. 3 Now work in groups. Read the text in roles: Kira, Money, and the narrator. Question Money’s opinion Kira’s opinion What is the best way to get money? To get more pocket money Does more money mean more happiness? No. More money means more problems. To use a dream tin Yes. More pocket money is her “dreamland”. Read the text. Complete the chart with what Kira and Money say about each question. Kira's attitude ☐ Agreeing ☐ Disagreeing ☐ Unsure "But when I have so many tins, I'll mix them up." Read again and find Kira’s three responses in order. Choose her attitude changes. Kira's attitude ☐ Finding an excuse ☐ Asking for help ☐ Giving up Kira's attitude ☐ Still refusing ☐ From trying to promising ☐ Angry This didn't make any sense. I'd surely go where I can have ten times more pocket money. "Okay, I'll give it a try ... No, I mean, I'll do it.” What makes Kira change her words from “I'll give it a try” to “I'll do it”? Look at what Money says right before Kira's last response. Money helps Kira change by: Understanding her worry (“You don't need many. Just choose the most important wishes from the list.”) Lowering the difficulty (“Two dream tins are enough. ”) This makes Kira feel the task is possible, so her attitude changes. 18 Complete the review with the words and expression from the passage. 4 better money laptop deal with parents manage dreams n. 愉快,快乐;满足 Does your prediction about the dream tin match what the text says? Now make your dream tin: Draw or write down 1–2 wishes that are most important to you. Then discuss the question below with your group: In the book, Money says to make one tin for each dream. Why can't you just mix all your dreams together in one tin? 20 Why can't you just mix all your dreams together in one tin? A dream tin makes your wish come true. If you put all your dreams into one tin, you will not know how much money you have saved for each dream. You may feel lost and stop trying. Separate tins let you see how you are doing for each goal. Most importantly, dream tins help you start saving now instead of just waiting for more pocket money. 1 Do you agree that “ten times more money means ten times more problems”? Why or why not? 2 Will you try dream tins for yourself? Why or why not? Learning to think Sometimes the writer doesn't explain everything in a passage. You need to make inferences. Learning to think n. 推论,推断的结果 1 Do you agree that “ten times more money means ten times more problems”? Why or why not? I partly agree with Money. If we have more money but don't know how to use it wisely, we may spend more and get into trouble. However, if we learn to manage our money first, having more money can actually help us achieve our dreams. So I think the problem is not money itself, but how we deal with it. 2 Will you try dream tins for yourself? Why or why not? Yes, I will. Because turning my dream into a real tin makes it clearer and easier to focus on. It also helps me start saving with the money I already have, instead of just waiting for more. No, I probably won't. Because I prefer to save money in my head or in a bank account. But I still agree with the idea that small actions matter more than just asking for more pocket money. …… Write a summary of the passage in your own words. Remember to use what you learnt in the part. Preview the next part about Grammar from Page 23 to Page 24. Money teaches Kira that the best way to get money is not to ask for more pocket money, but to make “dream tins.” Kira writes her most important wishes on separate tins and puts all her money into them. Money explains that more money means more problems, using Kira’s parents as an example. They have over 100 times more money but still can’t manage. What matters is not the number, but what you do with it. Kira finally promises to start saving for her two dreams. Lavf58.12.100 $There's a new malls across the street. Let's go shopping. Okay, can I have a new pair of sports shoes? Of course. And we also need a new computer . that will cost a lot of money. Do to worry, your dad and I manage money well. We make a budget every year. What's in the budget? Well, we need to cover your education first. Then we have to pay for our flat car, food and other daily needs every month. All these cost about fifty percent of our budget. Where does the other half go? We spend about thirty percent on special things like what like taking holidays. Holidays can be expensive. Do we save any money? Of course, we live about about twenty percent in our bank account. It's a good idea to save . for a rainy day. I see.
