On Juneteenth (六月节) five years ago, a friend came up to me and said, “Hey, what are you doing for Juneteenth?” And I had no idea. You know, I tried to kind of play along, but he said, “No, what are you doing?” And I just said, “I’m going to feed 100 families.”
I didn’t think about it. I don’t know where it came from. And from there it was two fundraising campaigns later and buying 800 pounds of food and bagging chicken leg quarters at four in the morning. What started as someone challenging me to do something for the community, turned into a day and an event that made me feel like I had never felt before.
From there, it was on. It just lit a fire in me. We’re up to 48 employees, about 15 vehicles. We’re opening up a 20,000-square-foot location later this year. We’ve grown in an environment where growth has been difficult. The average Black-led nonprofit never makes it to a million in revenue (收入). We did it in 18 months. As a company, we’ve never been in the red. It’s a social enterprise that is still a business.
Early on, it was really about individual donors and grants (拨款). And then over the years, we’ve tried to continue to figure out how to diversify the revenue so that we can be sustainable. We’ve never missed a payroll. We’ve never lost an employee. We’ve never had a volunteer. I just think that if someone does a job, they should get paid for it. It’s a commitment back to people.
This work has really defined a lot of people’s lives, and above all it’s about joy, happiness, and being OK, knowing that you gave everything you had.
24. What was the cause of the author’s involvement in community work?
A. A preexisting plan. B. A community request.
C. A challenge from a friend. D. A desire to make a difference.
25. What makes the organization’s achievements particularly notable?
A. Building up a global reputation. B. Breaking racial ceilings in nonprofits.
C. Relying entirely on individual donors. D. Prioritizing volunteer-based operations.
26. How did the organization change its revenue strategy?
A. From product sales to service charges.
B. From external reliance to income diversity.
C. From short-term gains to long-term investments.
D. From corporate partnerships to individual donations.
27. What is the core meaning of the work according to the author?
A. Gaining inner satisfaction through full dedication.
B. Establishing a reputation in the nonprofit field.
C. Expanding the organization to feed more families.
D. Securing financial independence for the employees.

Apps such as Merlin Bird ID, developed by Cornell University, are able to identify bird calls and songs down to the species level. While wildlife identification apps have been around for terrestrial animals for some time now, it has been far more difficult to develop the same technology for marine (海洋的) species. However, researchers led by teams at Cornell University and Aalto University have developed a new method of identifying fish through sound and video. The FishEye Collaborative research team collected over 20 hours of footage and sound over four days in Curacao, and painstakingly identified and connected natural sounds to 46 species of Caribbean reef-associated fishes, most of which were not previously known to make sound.
The major benefit of this new technology is that it is able to be placed at a research site and left to collect data without the need for a diver or boat to be present. The combination of visual and audio data has enabled scientists to pinpoint individuals responsible for making a given sound. “When we visualise that sound and lay the picture on top of the 360° image, the result is a video that can reveal which sound came from which fish,” says Dr Dantzker, lead author of the research.
Dr Dantzker continues, “We are a long way from being able to build ‘Merlin’ for the oceans, but the sounds are useful for scientists and conservationists right away.” Coral reefs are under serious threat from climate change, biodiversity loss and habitat destruction from human activity. Understanding the species composition and abundance at these vulnerable (脆弱的) habitats is crucial.
“Until now, the ‘loudest’ species, like dolphins, whales, and snapping shrimps, have overshadowed the many other voices in the sea. By discovering the identity of these hidden voices, sound-based techniques will become a powerful indicator of reef health and adaptability and a strategy to monitor wider and deeper,” says PhD candidate Matthew Duggan who worked on the project.
28. What does the underlined word “terrestrial” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Cold-blooded. B. Land-based. C. Well protected. D. Highly endangered.
29. What is the advantage of the new fish identification system?
A. It costs less than hiring professional divers.
B. It identifies rare species not previously discovered.
C. It can operate autonomously without human presence.
D. It works faster than traditional observation techniques.
30. What does Dr Dantzker imply about the current research achievement?
A. Immediate practical value exists despite limitations.
B. The technology is ready for commercial application.
C. A comprehensive ocean sound database is completed.
D. Marine conservation requires little human intervention.
31. How does Matthew Duggan describe the significance of this research?
A. It helps assess ecosystem health in the sea.
B. It decreases the need for visual reef monitoring.
C. It proves shrimps to be the noisiest ocean species.
D. It solves most challenges in marine biodiversity research.

Back in 2012 in the US, 5,300 art history degrees were awarded; the number fell to just 3,500 in 2022 — a 34 percent decline. The art schools suffered a reduction both in funding and attention.
Arts graduates, both undergraduate and postgraduate, are undoubtedly highly educated. Yet as workforce needs grow, creative industries need professionals who can not only understand theory but also apply it in commercial contexts. Employers value candidates with strategic thinking, industry-specific knowledge and practical experience. Traditional arts graduates, however, without vocational (职业的) training, struggle to enter commercial areas like galleries and publishing. Art history students in particular face growing difficulty in securing employment outside academic circles.
To bridge the gap, universities must combine academic learning with vocational training. Fortunately, somebody has laid some groundwork. Sotheby’s Institute of Art launched an MA in Art Business (MAAB) in 1998. The program combines art historical insight with business brain, helping students adapt to industry changes. Sixty percent of its 2024 students received job offers from art fairs, galleries, auction houses, e-commerce platforms and the like. When arts education better consists with global industry realities and international cultural markets, graduates can find a way out.
Regarding the course design, a digitally connected model, including global lectures and partnerships with foreign institutions, tops the institutions’ list of change, as it helps broaden students’ outlook and prepares students for international careers. For postgraduates, institutions should host networking events that connect students with employers and industry leaders. Moreover, technology is transforming the creative industries. Arts education should integrate data analytics, virtual exhibitions and AI-driven content creation to keep students ahead of the curve. Vocational learning must also include legal and integrity training. Moral challenges arise in media, publishing and design, and graduates should be equipped to advocate for proper business practices and cultural preservation.
By modernizing and integrating practical components, arts education can produce not just participants but leaders in the creative industries. The arts are rooted in innovation and adaptation — education must reflect this.
32. What is the problem with current arts education?
A. Lack of applicability. B. Decline in market needs.
C. Insufficiency of instructors. D. Shortage of arts applicants.
33. Why does the author mention the MAAB program?
A. To introduce a reputable institute.
B. To show the trend of employment.
C. To highlight the benefits of learning arts.
D. To indicate the direction for art universities.
34. What is the author’s attitude toward the future of arts education?
A. Strictly neutral. B. Strongly critical.
C. Completely pessimistic. D. Cautiously optimistic.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Who to Blame? B. Where to Go? C. Why Education? D. How about Art?

After the last bell had rung, the room was almost empty. Mike packed his books, and then saw Jenny with her head on the desk. She did not move when he said hello. He walked closer. “Are you feeling sick?” he asked in a gentle voice.
Jenny looked up and wiped her eyes. “No. I lost one hundred dollars on the way to school,” she said in a small voice. “It was for my mom’s medicine. She is sick. We do not have much money. I am afraid to go home.”
Mike sat beside her. “Let’s try hard to find it,” he said. They checked her bag, books, pencil case, and jacket pockets. They walked along the hall and the stairs and asked the guard at the gate, who was also in charge of the lost and found. No one had seen the money. Rain hit the windows. The drugstore on the street would close soon.
Jenny held the empty envelope. “My mom always trusted me,” she said. “If I go home with nothing, she will be sad.” Mike opened his wallet. He had only eleven dollars. “It is far from enough,” he said, thinking hard. “But we still have time.” He asked, “Do you know the name of the medicine?” Jenny showed a note from the doctor. Mike called the drugstore to check. “We have it,” the clerk said. “The price is eighty-six. We close at seven o’clock.”
Mike looked at the clock: 6:05. He sent a quick text to the class group, but most had gone offline. Then he thought of Jack, his best friend, who lived near the school and was ready to help others. “Wait here,” Mike said. “We will handle the problem. It will be a loan, not a gift. You can pay back later.” Jenny bit her lip and nodded. Mike took a breath and got ready to ask for help before the store closed.

A. From product sales to service charges.
B. From external reliance to income diversity.
C. From short-term gains to long-term investments.
D. From corporate partnerships to individual donations.

【答案】28. B 29. C 30. A 31. A
【解析】
【导语】本文介绍一套借助声音与视频识别鱼类的新技术,介绍其工作优势,说明它虽尚未完善,但可用来监测珊瑚礁,助力海洋生物保护工作。

词句猜测题。根据第一段“While wildlife identification apps have been around for terrestrial animals for some time now, it has been far more difficult to develop the same technology for marine (海洋的) species.(尽管野生动物识别应用程序针对terrestrial动物已经存在一段时间了,但为海洋物种开发相同的技术要困难得多。)”可知,句中terrestrial与marine(海洋的)形成对比,由此推断terrestrial含义为“陆地的”。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“The major benefit of this new technology is that it is able to be placed at a research site and left to collect data without the need for a diver or boat to be present.(这项新技术的主要优势是,它可以放置在研究地点,无人看管收集数据,不需要潜水员或船只在场。)”可知,这套鱼类识别系统可以在没有人员在场的情况下自主运行。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“We are a long way from being able to build ‘Merlin’ for the oceans, but the sounds are useful for scientists and conservationists right away.(距离我们能够打造海洋版的“Merlin”程序还有很长的路要走,但这些声音对科学家和环保人士而言立刻就能发挥作用。)”可知,Dantzker博士暗示这项成果虽存在局限,但具备即时实用价值。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“By discovering the identity of these hidden voices, sound‑based techniques will become a powerful indicator of reef health and adaptability and a strategy to monitor wider and deeper.(通过探明这些隐藏声音的来源,基于声音的技术将会成为衡量珊瑚礁健康状况与适应能力的有力指标,同时也是一种开展更广、更深监测的手段。)”可知,Matthew Duggan认为该研究有助于评估海洋生态系统的健康状态。

【答案】32. A 33. D 34. D 35. B
【解析】
【导语】文章指出传统艺术教育实用性不足的困境,以MAAB项目为例,从课程设计等角度提出改革举措,探讨艺术教育未来的发展出路。
【32题详解】

【答案】One possible version:
Dear Mr Brown,
I am writing to share some feedback regarding the English Corner sessions you’ve been organizing. Recently, I’ve noticed a declining number of participants, mainly because the discussion topics remain unchanged for days, making the sessions less interesting than expected.
To address this problem, might we introduce more interactive activities? For instance, organizing debate teams to discuss current hot topics or incorporating role-playing games based on real-life situations might stimulate students’ interest. These adjusted approaches, designed to create a more lively atmosphere, would likely encourage wider participation.
Thank you for your consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Pulling out his phone, Mike called Jack and asked for quick help.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Pulling out his phone, Mike called Jack and asked for quick help. He explained Jenny’s situation in a hurried voice. Without hesitation, Jack agreed to help. “Wait for me at the school gate. I’ll bring my savings,” he said. Ten minutes later, Jack arrived, slightly breathless from running, and handed Mike an envelope with seventy-five dollars in it. Combined with Mike’s eleven dollars, it was just enough. Jenny’s eyes were filled with tears, but this time, they were tears of gratitude. “Thank you,” she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. Mike quickly put all the money into the envelope.
Carrying the envelope of cash, Mike and Jack led Jenny to the drugstore before it closed. The rain softened to a light rain as they hurried down the street. They pushed the drugstore door open with just fifteen minutes left. Jenny handed the doctor’s note and the envelope to the clerk. Watching the clerk package the medicine, Jenny finally smiled in relief. “I’ll pay you back as soon as I can,” she promised. As they walked out into the cool evening air, the three felt shared warmth. They had turned a story of loss into one of kindness.
