On a Monday morning in Ngwenyameni, a village in Eswatini, eight daughters of local cattle herders at Techno Friends wait eagerly at their desks. Outside, cattle graze(吃草)across the rolling hills and the voices of herdsmen are a distant soundtrack. But inside, the learners are far removed from their rural surroundings. Standing in front of a big screen displaying a live feed, teacher Bongekile Shiba addresses her students, some of whom nervously press the keyboards on their donated laptops. “Today, we’re going to learn about computer coding. Have any of you heard of it before? Computer coding is a way of giving instructions to a computer, so it can perform specific tasks. It’s like giving a recipe to a chef, so they know how to make a dish,” Ms Shiba explains.
So begins a typical session as Ms Shiba brings critical modern skills to a community where poverty and cultural attitudes drive many girls out of education long before they reach college. In Eswatini, a tiny landlocked country in southern Africa, around 80% of girls enroll in primary school. But that number drops to just 1 in 2 when it comes to university.
In 2020, Ms Shiba began giving free coding and programming lessons to a small group of students via Zoom. Techno Friends was born, nurtured by a belief that the earlier girls start polishing a skill, the better. Children as young as first grade now take part in the classes. “Successful swimmers, athletes, soccer stars, and programmers started working on their crafts early in life,” says Ms Shiba. “By increasing the representation of girls in AI, we can create a more diverse and inclusive field that better reflects the needs and perspectives of the entire population.”
Ms Shiba has big plans on the horizon: an attitude she hopes will also serve as a model for her own students. Eventually, she says, her goal is to build a technology park with a robotics laboratory, the first in the country.
4. How does Ms Shiba explain computer coding to the girls?
A. By giving a definition. B. By telling an interesting story.
C. By making comparisons. D. By analyzing abstract theories.
5. What idea is behind the organization of Techno Friends?
A. Girls learn AI for the benefit of people. B. Girls work as models on digital platforms.
C. Girls can be successful professionals in life. D. Girls need to learn a skill at an earlier time.
6. What is Ms Shiba’s long-term aim?
A. To expand the scale of Techno Friends.
B. To improve the educational level of Eswatini.
C. To increase the proportion of girls in all fields of science.
D. To create the first-ever national technology park with a robotics lab.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Techno Friends works for African girls.
B. Tech education changes the Africans’ life.
C. Cattle herders’ daughters learn computer coding.
D. Coding skills are ready for girls to keep cattle.
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. D 7. C

Smell is probably our most underappreciated sense. But a loss of smell has been linked to health problems such as depression and cognitive (认知的)decline. And mounting evidence shows that smelling training may help prevent that decline.
Now, a team of researchers led by Michael Leon, has successfully boosted cognitive performance by exposing people to smells while they sleep. Twenty participants — all older than 60 and generally healthy — received six months of overnight smell enrichment, and all significantly improved their ability to recall lists of words.
The scientists are unsure about how the overnight smell may have produced this result. But Leon notes that the neurons (神经元)involved in our smelling have “direct superhighway access” to brain regions related to memory and emotion. In participants who received the treatment, the study authors observed the physical changes in a brain structure that connects the memory and emotional centers — a pathway that often deteriorates as people age.
Previous successful attempts to boost memory with smell typically relied on complicated interventions with multiple exposures a day. If the nighttime treatment proves successful in large tests, it promises to be a convenient way to achieve similar effects, says Vidya Kamath, a neuropsychologist at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Larger experiments may also help answer some remaining questions. The new study used widely available essential oils, but researchers aren’t sure if just any smell would get the same results. They don’t know how much an essential oil’s qualities affect the cognitive gains. It is also unclear how much novelty plays a role, says Michael Pieniak, a psychology researcher at the University of Wroclaw in Poland who has studied smelling training. Overnight smells could be a strong line for further study. But Pieniak cautions fans of smell training from running to try it. The results are promising, but just a start and should be repeated with more particular participants.
8. What’s Leon’s research intended to check?
A. If it can enhance cognitive ability. B. If it can help cure sleeplessness.
C. If it can recover the sense of smell. D. If it can improve physical health.
9. What happens to the participants in the experiment?
A. They suffer from depression. B. They remember smell far better.
C. They become more emotional. D. They have changes in their brains.
10. What does the underlined word “deteriorates” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Remains stable. B. Recovers gradually.
C. Becomes worse. D. Disappears completely.
11. What is Michael Pieniak’s attitude towards the findings?
A. Cautious. B. Optimistic. C. Critical. D. Enthusiastic.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. A
【解析】

Through evolution, animals have developed numerous ways to protect themselves from predators (捕食者). Turtles hide in their shells, and skunks (臭鼬) use smelly liquid. But these defenses don’t work against cars. Environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb explains, “When facing a car, these defenses are useless — or even harmful. Staying still is the worst choice. Roadkill is a serious threat to wildlife.”
Roads also act as barriers, preventing animals from moving freely. The constant traffic on highways creates what scientists call a “moving fence”— a wall of vehicles that animals avoid crossing. While we often see dead animals like deer or squirrels on roads, we don’t see the ones that never try to cross. This isolation can harm animal populations more than roadkill itself.
Chemicals from roads also damage the environment. Every year, the U. S. uses 20 million tons of road salt to melt ice, which pollutes nearby soil and plants. Cars release metals like zinc and copper, and tires leave behind microplastics. These pollutants make roadsides dangerous for creatures like monarch butterflies, even though these areas could otherwise be good habitats.
Roadsides sometimes attract animals with food like flowers or berries, but this becomes an “ecological trap”. Animals are drawn to these resources, only to face the danger of traffic.
Interestingly, when traffic decreases, animals quickly adapt. Researchers in the Bay Area found that when cars disappeared for months, white-crowned sparrows — small songbirds — started singing more complex and varied songs. Without traffic noise, they no longer needed to “shout” and could return to their natural behaviors. This shows how much roads affect wildlife — but also how adaptable animals can be.
Despite these challenges, Goldfarb says, certain species have made remarkable adaptations. He notes that Chicago’s urban foxes are said to look both ways before crossing the street. “We think about roads as these forces that are universally or exclusively harmful to animals, and certainly they’re incredibly destructive,” he says. “But wildlife is also impressively adaptive and clever and animals are finding ways to make a living in our midst.”
12. How does the author start the text in the first paragraph?
A. By stating a reason. B. By providing statistics.
C. By defining a concept. D. By giving examples.
13. What harmful impact do roads have on wildlife?
A. Less food supply. B. Restricted movement.
C. Increased predators. D. Species extinction.
14. What can we infer from Goldfarb’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Roads are not truly harmful to wildlife.
B. Urban foxes seldom get hit by vehicles.
C. Animals adapt cleverly to dangerous roads.
D. Wildlife protection deserves highest attention.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To advocate reducing traffic.
B. To preserve wildlife diversity.
C. To analyze roads’ effects on wildlife.
D. To highlight roadkill danger to animals.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. C

故填which。

In a small town lived a teenage girl named Lily. She was cheerful and loved making new friends and trying new things, but she seldom turned to others for help. Lately she felt sad and lost as she was stuck in a difficult situation.
Lily had arranged to go to a concert with her best friend, Sarah, on Saturday evening. However, that morning her cousins visited, and they spent a noisy, tiring day together. Because of the busy day, Lily did not hear her phone and missed her concert appointment. The next day, when Lily met Sarah, she was excited to share the story of her cousins’ visit. But Sarah became angry and walked away. Even when Lily tried to explain, Sarah did not respond and started avoiding her at school.
One day, Lily noticed a flyer (传单) for a youth group meeting at the local community center. Although she was curious about meeting new people, she also felt a little scared of the unknown. After a brief pause, she decided to join the meeting, hoping it might help her feel better.
At the community center, a group of friendly teenagers welcomed her. David, the group leader, greeted her warmly and introduced her to everyone. They played games, talked about their interests, and shared their problems. As the meeting went on, Lily realized she was not alone in her struggles. The group discussed how challenging it could be to manage school work, friendships, and family expectations.
Lily had kept her feelings inside ever since her argument with Sarah, thinking she was the only one experiencing such difficulties. Now, surrounded by others who understood, she felt more hopeful. When it was her turn to speak, she opened up about her feelings. As she shared her emotions, Lily felt a great sense of relief.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
After Lily finished speaking, David asked the group to brainstorm ways to help her.

The next day, Lily approached Sarah in the school hallway with two concert tickets.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
After Lily finished speaking, David asked the group to brainstorm ways to help her. “It’s important to communicate openly with your friend.” David suggested. Other members also chimed in with their own suggestions, like writing a letter or inviting Sarah to an event. Lily wrote down these ideas, her heart lightened by their support. She decided to combine the suggestions and wrote a heartfelt letter, explaining the misunderstanding and inviting Sarah to another concert as a way to make up. With renewed confidence, Lily prepared to deliver the letter and tickets to Sarah.
The next day, Lily approached Sarah in the school hallway with two concert tickets. “Sarah, I’m really sorry for missing our plan last week.” Lily apologized sincerely, handed the letter and tickets to Sarah and smiled at her eagerly. Sarah was taken aback. But after reading the letter, her face softened. She agreed to put the past behind them and looked forward to the concert. Lily’s proactive approach not only mended their friendship but also inspired Sarah to join the youth group, where they both found new ways to seek help and grow together.

①插话:chimed in/cut in
②写下,记下:wrote down/set down
③交给:handed/give/pass

Join the Golden Gate National Parks Volunteer Program to keep the parks ecologically healthy and welcoming for visitors! Key tasks include removing harmful plants, collecting native seeds for future planting and clearing littered remains. You’ll play a key role in supporting habitat restoration, trail maintenance, and landscape care across three iconic locations: Golden Gate National recreation Area, Muir Woods National Monument, and Fort Point National Historic Site.
● Groups & Time Commitment
Groups of 10 or more are welcome but should inform the volunteer office 3 days in advance. This helps staff prepare enough tools and assign tasks more efficiently.
Each volunteer shift lasts 2-8 hours per day, with a weekly-maximum of 40 hours to balance work and rest. We stick to the schedule rain or shine, so come ready for changing weather.
● Age, Skills & What to Bring
Age: Most projects require volunteers to be at least 14 years old, while trail repair tasks need participants aged 16+. Specifics will be shared when you sign up for a shift.
Skills: No prior experience is needed! We provide all training, tools and on-site leadership to guide you through each task.
Items: Bring clothes, long pants (to avoid scratches), and closed-toe shoes. Also, prepare weather layers, rain gear (if rain is forecast), a reusable water bottle, and sunscreen.
● Safety & Benefits
Safety: You may need to lift 10-20 Ibs and work on uneven ground; talk to staff if you have physical concerns. Avoid poison oak, check for ticks after shifts, and run zigzag if yellow jackets (黄蜂) are disturbed. Do not touch dangerous items — alert staff immediately. Call 911 for emergencies.
Benefits: Enjoy healthy outdoor work while making a difference! You’ll work with park staff and diverse volunteers, learn about the parks’ ecology and history, and connect with these special natural spaces.

A. They suffer from depression. B. They remember smell far better.
C. They become more emotional. D. They have changes in their brains.
10. What does the underlined word “deteriorates” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Remains stable. B. Recovers gradually.
C. Becomes worse. D. Disappears completely.
11. What is Michael Pieniak’s attitude towards the findings?
A. Cautious. B. Optimistic. C. Critical. D. Enthusiastic.
D
