综合应用练
Ⅰ. 阅读理解
A
The Tibetan antelope, known locally as "chiru," is one of the most remarkable creatures on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. These elegant animals can run at speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour and have adapted to survive in temperatures as low as -40°C. Their thick, warm fur, which is among the finest and softest in the animal kingdom, unfortunately became their biggest curse.
In the 1980s and 1990s, the demand for shahtoosh — a type of shawl made from Tibetan antelope wool — soared in international luxury markets. Each shawl required wool from three to five antelopes, and hunters killed the animals to obtain it. The population plummeted from over one million to fewer than 70,000. The Chinese government responded by establishing the Hoh Xil Nature Reserve in 1996, deploying armed patrols to stop illegal hunting.
Today, thanks to strict protection measures and international bans on shahtoosh trade, the Tibetan antelope population has recovered to over 300,000. In 2021, the species was removed from the endangered list — a rare success story in wildlife conservation. However, challenges remain as climate change and infrastructure development continue to threaten their habitat.
1. What made the Tibetan antelope's fur a "curse" for the species?
A. It was too thin to keep them warm in winter.
B. It was highly valued, leading to mass hunting.
C. It caused the animals to overheat in summer.
D. It attracted predators to the antelopes.
2. How many antelopes were needed to make one shahtoosh shawl?
A. One to two
B. Three to five
C. Five to ten
D. More than ten
3. The word "plummeted" in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to
A. increased rapidly
B. decreased sharply
C. remained stable
D. changed slightly
4. What can be inferred about the future of the Tibetan antelope?
A. All threats have been completely eliminated.
B. The species will soon disappear despite conservation efforts.
C. Protection efforts have helped, but new challenges are emerging.
D. The antelope population will grow without any limits.
B
Wildlife conservation is often seen as a battle between economic development and environmental protection. However, the story of the snow leopard in the Himalayas shows that these two goals can go hand in hand. Snow leopards are one of the most elusive big cats in the world, living in the high mountain ranges of Central and South Asia.
For decades, snow leopards were hunted for their beautiful spotted fur. Local herders also killed them to protect their livestock. By the early 2000s, fewer than 4,000 remained in the wild. Conservation organizations then introduced an innovative program: they trained local communities to produce and sell handicrafts featuring snow leopard designs, providing an alternative source of income. At the same time, herders were compensated for any livestock killed by the cats.
The results have been encouraging. Snow leopard populations in several regions have stabilized or even increased. Local people, who once viewed the cats as enemies, now actively protect them because the animals attract eco-tourists and generate income. This model has been so successful that it is now being applied to other endangered species protection programs around the world.
5. What was the main reason herders killed snow leopards?
A. For their valuable fur
B. To protect their livestock
C. For sport and entertainment
D. Because they were dangerous to humans
6. How did the conservation program help local communities economically?
A. By paying them to hunt fewer leopards
B. By training them to make and sell handicrafts
C. By giving them government subsidies
D. By relocating them to cities
7. The word "elusive" in Paragraph 1 most likely means
A. easy to find
B. difficult to catch or see
C. very aggressive
D. extremely large
8. What is the main message of the passage?
A. Economic development must stop to save wildlife.
B. Only governments can solve conservation problems.
C. Community involvement can help both people and wildlife.
D. Snow leopards will soon be removed from the endangered list.
Ⅱ. 七选五
Endangered species protection has become one of the most urgent environmental issues of our time. ____9____ Scientists warn that dozens of species disappear from the Earth every single day, many of which have never even been formally identified.
The causes of this crisis are varied. ____10____ Deforestation destroys the homes of countless animals, while pollution contaminates rivers and oceans. Climate change further worsens the situation by altering habitats faster than species can adapt.
However, there are success stories that give us hope. ____11____ The giant panda, once on the brink of extinction, has seen its population double over the past four decades thanks to intensive conservation efforts in China.
____12____ These include establishing nature reserves, enforcing anti-hunting laws, and running breeding programs in captivity. Public education is equally important, as changing consumer behavior can reduce demand for endangered animal products.
Ultimately, protecting wildlife is protecting ourselves. ____13____ When we save a species from extinction, we are preserving the intricate web of life that sustains us all.
A. The key to these successes lies in a combination of approaches.
B. Habitat destruction is the leading cause, followed by hunting and pollution.
C. Tourism can sometimes help fund conservation efforts.
D. Every species plays a role in the ecosystem.
E. Some animals have been saved through determined human intervention.
F. The rate of species loss has never been higher in human history.
G. Climate change is the only real threat to endangered species.
