Turtles hide in their shells, and skunks release a smelly liquid. But these natural defenses do not work against cars. Environmental writer Ben Goldfarb explains, “When facing a car, these protections are useless—or even make things worse. Staying still is the most dangerous choice. Roadkill is a major danger to wildlife.” Roads also act as barriers, limiting animals' freedom to move. The steady flow of traffic on highways creates what experts call a “moving fence”—one that animals are afraid to cross. While we often see dead animals like deer or squirrels on the road, we don't see the ones that never attempt to cross. This separation can harm animal groups more than roadkill itself. Chemicals from roads also harm the environment. Every year, the U.S. uses 20 million tons of road salt to melt ice, which pollutes nearby soil and plants. Cars release metals like zinc and copper, and tires leave microplastics behind. These pollutants make roadside areas unsafe for species such as monarch butterflies, even though these zones could otherwise offer useful habitats. Roadsides sometimes attract animals with food sources like flowers or fruits, but this becomes an “ecological trap”. Animals come for the food, only to face the risk of being hit by cars. Interestingly, when traffic decreases, animals adapt quickly. Researchers in the Bay Area found that when cars were absent for months, white-crowned sparrows—a type of small songbird—began singing more complex and varied songs. Without traffic noise, they no longer needed to “shout” and could return to their natural way of communicating. This shows how deeply roads affect wildlife—but also how flexible animals can be. Despite these challenges, Goldfarb points out that some species have learned to cope in remarkable ways. He mentions that urban foxes in Chicago are said to look both ways before crossing the street. “We often think roads only harmful to animals, and it's true that they cause a lot of damage,” he says. “But wildlife is also surprisingly adaptive and smart. Animals are finding ways to survive in a human-dominated world.” 1.How does the writer begin this article? A.By giving examples. B.By telling a story. C.By explaining a term. D.By using numbers. 2.According to the text, what harmful effect do roads have on animals? A.Less food to eat. B.Less freedom to move. C.Fewer animal habitats. D.More endangered animal species. 3.What can we learn from Goldfarb's words in the last paragraph? A.City foxes rarely get hit by cars. B.Roads are not really bad for wildlife. C.Animals are smart in dealing with roads. D.We should pay more attention to protecting wildlife. 4.Why did the writer write this article? A.To ask people to reduce traffic. B.To explain how roads affect wildlife. C.To remind us that roadkill is very dangerous. D.To teach people how to protect different animals. Ⅱ.七选五 [2025河南新乡月考] As our human population and resource needs grow, we are leaving less and less room for wildlife. But the good news is that each of us can play a role in helping wild animals by making the world a better place for them. 1      2     Take a walk and enjoy the wildlife all around you—the birds, butterflies, elephants and the like. Spend more time outside appreciating, enjoying and learning about wildlife. Speak up for wildlife. Become a voice of wildlife on social media. Speak out against illegal wildlife hunting, wild animal experiments, using wild animals for entertainment, and much more. Learn about the lives and problems many animals are facing today. 3 Encourage friends and others to watch them too, and share your ideas about how to protect and save wildlife.    Pick up rubbish around you. 4 Pick up any plastic bag. Plastic of any kind, fishing line, and anything that can be mistaken for food by animals can trap and even kill them.    Never buy products from threatened or endangered species. When traveling to a foreign country, shopping overseas, or shopping in your local area, never buy gifts or products that support the illegal wildlife trade, or are from animals in danger. 5   A.Contact the local government. B.Then spread them on social media. C.Go outside and connect with wildlife. D.Your choice could make a big difference. E.Take a free online class on wildlife protection. F.Collecting rubbish can save the life of an animal. G.We can help by putting the following ideas into practice. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.     Ⅲ.完形填空 [2026江西师范大学附属中学月考] In the village of Panchgani, rows of benches face a blackboard beneath the banyan trees. A(n) 1 classroom has opened, but the 2 aren't children. They're monkeys learning to “read”.    Every afternoon, villagers gather to hold up large 3 with bold symbols: a red circle, a blue square, a green wave. The monkeys 4 attentively. When they identify a 5 correctly by touching a matching tile on the ground, they're 6 with a banana slice.    The project was 7 by a local teacher, Meera. “Children here love animals,” she says, “but conflicts(冲突) exist. What if we could communicate—just a little?” Meera didn't train the monkeys. 8 , she used observational learning. For months, she held lessons for kids near the forest edge. The monkeys, naturally 9 , began watching. Slowly, they started copying the children's gestures.    Now, over 30 monkeys regularly attend. They've 10 12 symbols linked to real-world meanings: red means “danger”, green means “safe food” and blue means “water source”. When villagers hold up the red circle, the monkeys chat and 11 from the path—a simple early warning. But the real 12 is deeper. “Before, we threw stones to 13 them when they came for mangoes,” says farmer Raju. “Now, we show them the 14 card and point to the wild figs (无花果) up the hill.
