Using her mathematics skills, she helped NASA send astronauts to the moon and return them safely home. Johnson was born in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, in 1918. Math came easy to her. She started high school when she was just 10 years old and college when she was 15. After graduating with honors at 18, Johnson taught black students math. Later she continued to study math at West Virginia University but left early to raise a family and return to teaching. In 1952, when she was 34 years old, she learned about jobs for black women with mathematics and computing skills at the Langley Laboratory of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (航空学), which would later become NASA. She and the other women worked as “human computers,” figuring out the difficult calculations (计算) needed for spaceflight. During her time there, she broke racial (种族的) barriers, like using the bathroom that was supposed to be for white women only. One of her biggest achievements at NASA was helping calculate the path of the country’s first human spaceflight in 1961, making sure astronaut Alan B. Shepard, Jr. had a safe trip. A year later she helped figure out John Glenn’s orbit of the planet, another American first. In 1969, she calculated the path of Neil Armstrong’s historic mission to the moon on Apollo 11. Yet unlike the white male astronauts she helped launch into space, no one knew of the groundbreaking work Johnson and many other black women did for NASA and space exploration. It wasn’t until the 2016 launch of the movie Hidden Figures that these women received widespread recognition. Johnson died in 2020, at the age of 101. In her honor, NASA built the Katherine G. Johnson Computational Research Facility at the Langley Research Center to celebrate the hard work she did. 4. What can be inferred about Johnson? A. She hesitated before raising a family. B. She showed extraordinary talent in math. C. She struggled with teaching black students. D. She received many honors during her teaching career. 5. What did Johnson do at NASA? A. She studied racial barriers. B. She calculated spaceflight paths. C. She led physical training programs. D. She designed astronauts’ bathrooms. 6. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A. The variety of spaceflight projects. B. The courage of American astronauts. C. The desire of NASA’s administrators D. The significance of Johnson’s achievements. 7. What helped Johnson win the public’s attention? A. Her public speech. B. Her story in a movie. C. Support from black women. D. Recommendations by scientists. 4. B 5. B 6. D 7. While a number of voice-activated smart home systems have proved to be popular with consumers, the introduction of hands-free gesture (手势) control systems presents a different option for homeowners. Chicago-based Fibaro offers the Fibaro Swipe, a wireless gesture control pad that performs tasks and controls smart home devices with the wave of a hand. The device recognizes six gestures — up, down, left, right, circle to the left, and circle to the right, or can be programmed with more complex sequences (序列). “We developed Swipe to offer an entirely new way of interacting with technology in the home,” said Rich Bira, managing director of Fibaro USA. “Smart home consumers no longer have to worry about having their smartphone beside them at home to control their devices and ‘scenes’— Swipe will deliver a no-touch access point to control them all.” A similar product, Bixi, is also making its way into the homes of consumers. It’s the first able (便携式的) hand-gesture recognition device from France-based technology startup Biuemint Labs. It connects to phones, pads and smart home devices through Bluetooth and recognizes gestures for contact-less use. If your hands are dirty from cooking but you need to scroll (滚动) down to see the rest of a recipe (菜谱), Bixi will recognize the hand gestures to perform the action for you. “We’ve created Bixi to remove the inconvenience of having to physically interact with a touch screen, removing the need to touch or even be in front of your device,” says Vijayaraghavan Narayanan, founder and CEO of Bluemint Labs. Will gesture-controlled smart home control systems outperform those that are voice-activated? Let’s wait and see. 8. Why does the author mention Alexa at the beginning? A. To introduce a new smart home device. B. To stress the need for voice-activated systems. C. To lead up to a discussion on hands-free devices. D. To encourage consumers to use voice commands. 9. How does the author support the idea presented in paragraph 3? A. By giving examples. B. By analyzing causes. C. By stating arguments. D. By making comparisons. 10. What problem does Bixi aim to solve? A. Smartphone connection. B. Trouble with touch screens. C. Problems of movement recognition. D. Difficulty in programming different gestures. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. Are Voice-Activated Smart Homes on the Rise? B. Fibaro Swipe: A New Age in Smart Home Interaction C. Are Gesture-Control Devices the Next Big Thing in Home Tech? D. Bluem int Labs: The Answer to Touch-Free Interaction with Smart Devices 【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11. D While most musicians work with other artists when creating their music, Holly Herndon, an American musician and sound artist who is now based in Berlin, takes a different way, working with the machine learning software called Spawn. The software uses artificial neural (人工神经的) networks modeled after the structure of the human brain. These networks learn patterns from datasets during the training process. Based on the data, the networks create new material that includes Herndon’s own voice. When producing her album, PROTO, Holly trained datasets to write new music. The process requires the input data of music written by people or by artificial intelligence (AI). The neural networks then produce variations of that music. “Computers surprise you in a way that an instrument doesn’t,” Holly said. So what does music sound like when composed by what is essentially a robot? It sounds like music from the future! But Holly Herndon isn’t the only one exploring AI in composition. Machines have played an increasingly important role in music over the last century. The father of computer science, Alan Turing, developed the first computer-generated music in 1951. Then in 1980, David Cope from the University of California, Santa Cruz, developed EMI — Experiments in Musical Intelligence, a system that analyzes existing music and produces new pieces based on it. AI might not take over the job of the “pop star” anytime soon, or will it? Miquela Sousa is a computer-generated artist with over one million followers on Instagram. “I’m a model and singer, and I’m a robot,” Miquela said. This then raises the question: can we reproduce creativity using a computer? Though those questions are not easy to answer, I believe the next frontier of music lies somewhere in between. I can see the path forward with a new dawn of creativity that combines human inventiveness with AI. And the next chapter of music will certainly become wonderful as music and AI become even more closely connected. 12. What plays an important role in producing PROTO? A. Holly’s special voice. B. Holly’s rich knowledge. C. The input of existing music. D. The use of an instrument. 13. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A. The recent famous music artists. B. The increasing diversity of AI music. C. The development of computer science. D. The history of computer-generated music. 14. Why does the author mention the example of Miquela Sousa? A. To show the popularity of smart robots. B. To promote deep thinking on AI musicians. C. To explain the tasks of computer-generated artists. D. To make comparisons between human and robotic artists. 15. What is the author’s attitude towards music co-created by AI and humans? A. Confident. B. Surprised. C. Confused. D. Doubtful. C 13. D 14. B 15. 根据第二段中的“When producing her album, PROTO, Holly trained datasets to write new music. The process requires the input data of music written by people or by artificial intelligence (AI).(在制作专辑PROTO时,霍莉训练数据集创作新音乐。 根据第三段中的“But Holly Herndon isn’t the only one exploring AI in composition. Machines have played an increasingly important role in music over the last century. The father of computer science, Alan Turing, developed the first computer-generated music in 1951. Then in 1980, David Cope from the University of California, Santa Cruz, developed EMI — Experiments in Musical Intelligence, a system that analyzes existing music and produces new pieces based on it.(但霍莉·赫恩登并不是唯一探索人工智能作曲的人。 根据第四段中的“Miquela Sousa is a computer-generated artist with over one million followers on Instagram. “I’m a model and singer, and I’m a robot,” Miquela said. This then raises the question: can we reproduce creativity using a computer?(米克拉·索萨是一名计算机生成艺人,在照片墙拥有超百万粉丝。 根据第五段中的“Though those questions are not easy to answer, I believe the next frontier of music lies somewhere in between. I can see the path forward with a new dawn of creativity that combines human inventiveness with AI. And the next chapter of music will certainly become wonderful as music and AI become even more closely connected.(尽管这些问题并不容易回答,但我相信音乐的下一个前沿领域介于两者之间。 Birdwatching is a fun hobby for many people. ____16____They take photos and record the birds’ sounds to learn about their behavior. Prayitno Goenarto, 31, is an experienced birdwatcher and wildlife photographer from Indonesia. When he was a college student, he got sick for a while. His doctor advised him to go outdoors more often. He then decided to watch birds and take photos of them. Once, he took a photo of a small songbird. Knowing little about birds, he labeled it as a sparrow online. Soon, someone corrected him. The bird was actually a finch. This embarrassing incident led Goenarto to check out a field guide. ____17____ “Birdwatching has helped me in ways beyond what I could imagine.” Goenarto recalled. His life slows down. He makes new friends. He also encounters (遇见)bird species he didn’t know about. “____18____ Especially if you have placed a lot of effort into finding the bird—learning the bird’s song, habitat, ecology, and reviewing sightings. ” he said. “ I feel my heart race, my eyes widen and almost automatically(自动地) I start to smile.” One of the highlights(最精彩的部分) of his career was a trip to a faraway island to search for a rare bird species. The journey was hard. It rained heavily every afternoon. He was cold and wet for nearly the entire trip. ____19____“ Each day was as exciting as the next as almost all the birds I saw were new to me.” he said. Besides watching, Goenarto also takes photos and records sounds on field trips. Such photos of birds or other animals can help raise awareness to protect animals.“____20____” Goenarto said. “ They inspire people to learn more about what is out there and why it’s worth saving.” A. That was when he started watching birds. B. It is difficult to describe such feelings. C. Birders like to look at birds in the wild. D. Wildlife photography can capture amazing moments in nature. E. That sparked his lifelong interest in birdwatching and photography. F. However, he was able to find many new locations for the species. G. They can also help him analyze and compare to see if there are any trends. C 17. E 18. B 19. F 20. 【16题详解】 根据空前“Birdwatching is a fun hobby for many people. 以及空后“They take photos and record the birds’ sounds to learn about their behavior. 可知,C项“Birders like to look at birds in the wild. C项中的“birders”前面对应“many people”,后面对应代词“they”。故选C。 【17题详解】 根据空前“This embarrassing incident led Goenarto to check out a field guide. E项“That sparked his lifelong interest in birdwatching and photography. 【18题详解】 根据空后句“I feel my heart race, my eyes widen and almost automatically(自动地) I start to smile. B项“It is difficult to describe such feelings. 【19题详解】 根据上文“The journey was hard. It rained heavily every afternoon. He was cold and wet for nearly the entire trip. 以及空后““Each day was as exciting as the next as almost all the birds I saw were new to me.” he said. F项“However, he was able to find many new locations for the species. 【20题详解】 根据空前“Such photos of birds or other animals can help raise awareness to protect animals. It was the school’s annual talent show, and I’d practiced the violin piece Lullaby for three months — until my fingertips had calluses and the melody played in my dreams. My mom sat in the front row, holding the bouquet of sunflowers she’d promised to give me if I didn’t freeze up. I took a deep breath and began. The first notes flowed soft, like raindrops on a window, and I started to relax. For a moment, I forgot about the audience, forgot about the pressure to be perfect. But halfway through the chorus, a sharp snap cut through the music. My E string (琴弦) had broken. Time stopped. The audience went quiet — so quiet I could hear my own heartbeat thudding in my ears. I stared at the broken string, my mind blank. All those hours of practice, all the times I’d told myself I could do this…it felt like it was all falling apart. I wanted to run off stage, to hide behind the curtains where no one could see me. My mom leaned forward in her seat, her smile gone, her eyes wide with worry. I sat there, frozen, for what felt like forever. The violin felt heavy in my hands, like a weight I couldn’t hold anymore. Then, from the back of the auditorium, someone clapped — a slow, gentle clap. Then another. Soon, the whole room was clapping, soft at first, then louder, like a wave rolling toward me. I looked up, and saw Mia, the girl who’d helped me fix my violin last week, grinning and nodding. “You got this!” she mouthed. My hands stopped shaking. I set the violin down, stood up, and walked to the edge of the stage. The clapping died down, and everyone waited, their eyes on me. I took a deep breath, opened my mouth. I sang Lullaby’s melody, voice shaky at first but growing stronger. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Mia rushed to the stage, holding an extra violin string for emergency. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 I sang Lullaby’s melody voice shaky at first but growing stronger. The clapping faded, and the auditorium filled with silence — warm, not harsh, like the hush before dawn. I closed my eyes, letting the tune flow not from strings, but from the months of practice etched in my heart. When the last note hung in the air, the room erupted again, louder this time. My mom was wiping her eyes, and Mia was cheering so hard her face turned pink. I realized growth isn’t about never breaking — it’s about finding a new way to play. Mia rushed to the stage, holding an extra violin string for emergency. We fixed it together, her hands steadying mine, and when I played a short, bright snippet again, it felt like a celebration. Later, mom handed me the sunflowers. “You didn’t just perform,” she said. “You learned to adapt.” That night, I understood: the broken string wasn’t a failure. It was the push I needed to stop fearing mistakes — and start growing through them. 词汇激活: 行为类 ①领悟:realize/come to understand/grasp ②修理:fix/mend/repair ③停止:stop/cease 情绪类 ①欢呼:cheer/hail ②害怕:fear/dread  【点睛】[高分句型1] I closed my eyes, letting the tune flow not from strings, but from the months of practice etched in my heart.(运用了现在分词letting作伴随状语和过去分词短语etched作后置定语) [高分句型2] We fixed it together, her hands steadying mine, and when I played a short, bright snippet again, it felt like a celebration.(运用了独立主格结构作状语和从属连词when引导的时间状语从句) [高分句型3] It was the push I needed to stop fearing mistakes — and start growing through them.(运用了省略关系代词的限制性定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 郧阳中学2025级高二年级上学期暑假自主学习检测 英语试卷 本试题卷共八页,四部分共67题,全卷满分150分。 1. Many of America’s state-high points lie in national parks, welcoming hikers, climbers, and drivers with breathtaking views. Alaska: Mount McKinley in Denali National Park The peak of Mount McKinley, located on the Alaska-Canada border, is not only the highest point in Alaska, but also on the continent of North America. The mountain, which is a world-famous destination for mountaineers, is so tall that it can be seen towering over the Alaska landscape by astronauts in space! California: Mt. Whitney in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks Known as the tallest mountain in the “lower 48” states, Mt. Whitney is located on the far eastern boundary of Sequoia National Park. Requiring a permit before setting out, it is one of the most popular climbed mountain peaks in the Sierra Nevada with a height of 14, 494 feet. Tennessee: Clingmans Dome in Great Smoky Mountains National Park At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the state. Most visitors drive to the top of the mountain if weather and conditions permit. On clear days, you can see more than 100 miles of a 360-degree breathtaking view from the mountain’s observation tower. B The stars were always within reach for Katherine Johnson. C “Alexa, turn on the lights.” Consumers (消费者) like the idea that a simple voice command (命令) like this can make their home a place of simplicity, where having a simple conversation with a human-like personal assistant such as Amazon’s Alexa, completes small tasks like turning on the lights, changing the temperature, or checking the weather. Are Gesture-Control Devices the Next Big Thing in Home Tech? D. Bluem int Labs: The Answer to Touch-Free Interaction with Smart Devices D While most musicians work with other artists when creating their music, Holly Herndon, an American musician and sound artist who is now based in Berlin, takes a different way, working with the machine learning software called Spawn. A. Confident. B. Surprised. C. Confused. D. Doubtful. Birdwatching is a fun hobby for many people. ____16____They take photos and record the birds’ sounds to learn about their behavior. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
