(2026·湖南长郡中学高一期中)David Thompson sat on a hard bench behind the long narrow desk and watched the flies fly lazily in the sun. The drone of the younger boys reading letters and the older boys reciting Latin verbs made him sleepy. David had to force his eyes to stay open. He wanted to learn something new!
课后巩固 多维提能
He looked up at the schoolmaster's high desk in the front of the room. The new schoolmaster, Mr. John Adams, was from Harvard College. David's father had been impressed with him. The boys had already had several other teachers, but none of them seemed to inspire David. So far, there was nothing to show that this one was special, though he'd only been there two days.

“It's too hot to sit and memorize lessons,” the schoolmaster said. “We'll move outdoors for the next part of our lesson.” He led the group of boys into the schoolyard. “You younger boys, dig for grubs and beetles (幼虫和甲虫). Count their feet. See if you can describe their shells (壳).”
David watched the schoolmaster surrounded by laughing young students. No one had ever used the schoolyard itself for a classroom. “What next?” he thought. Soon he didn't have time to think about the younger boys, for he was running after butterflies and dragonflies himself.

David and his friends liked this new way of learning.
“It will be a clear night tonight. Go outside and look at the sky,” said the schoolmaster. “Look at the stars and notice their brightness and the patterns they make. These patterns have names from Greek mythology(神话), names like Orion, Aries, and others. Tomorrow we will learn about the ancient stories on them.”
“How is the new schoolmaster?” asked David's father that evening, when David announced he was going out to look at the sky.

“He's different from any schoolmaster we've had,” David admitted. “He seems interested in everything around him, and he wants us to be curious too. He even used the schoolyard as a classroom.”
“So Mr. John Adams and his new ways make school useful to you after all,” joked David's father.
“I believe he has,” said David. “I know I won't forget the lessons he has taught us.”

(2026·东营一中高一月考)Parents, do you ever wonder what's going on in your children' s minds? Teens, do you ever wish you could tell your parents how you feel about their parenting styles? And are your parents like everyone else's? One East Valley teacher is helping bridge this gap (隔阂) with a unique survey.
Scott Reed, a psychology teacher from Hamilton High School in Chandler, AriZona, says, no doubt, it is very different being a teenager today than it was when their parents were teens.
课后巩固 多维提能
Social media (媒体) has played a big role in that change. “I think social media puts a lot of stress on us,” said Vedant Thareja, a senior at Hamilton High School. He added that he had friends who felt stressed to look a certain way, because of pictures of famous people they saw on social media, and were disappointed (失望的) when they could not achieve that look. Lexi Lamond, a 16-year-old Hamilton High School student agreed. “Everybody is comparing themselves to everyone these days,” said Lamond.

Both students are part of Reeds class and took part in a survey of parenting styles. The survey showed teenagers felt their parents were often wanting them to compete with another teen who is doing better than them, or a brother or sister who outshines them. Teens also showed that they wanted their parents to stop trying to solve all their problems. Sometimes they just needed space to talk and deal with things themselves. Teens said they felt their parents were trying too hard to place themselves in every part of their lives.
课后巩固 多维提能
One point that mom and educational expert Katey McPherson found insightful (有见地的) was that teens said they could not meet their parents' expectations to “be perfect” all the time.
Reed's survey offered great insight into the mind of a teen and the role they wanted to see parents playing in their lives. Mental (心理的) health experts suggest parents teach their children the skills of solving problems, getting along with others in a healthy way, and ways to manage stress so they would be prepared to deal with any disappointment and failure that could come their way as they grew into young adults.

(2026·嘉兴高一月考)For many teenagers, Saturday mornings are a time to sleep in. After a busy week of waking up early, weekends offer a chance to catch up on rest. A new study finds that sleeping in on weekends—as long as it's not for more than two extra hours—may help teenagers feel less anxious.
课后巩固 多维提能
Sleep is very important for everyone, especially teenagers, because it helps the brain and body work properly. However, 75% of American teenagers do not get the recommended 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. School, homework, and other activities require early wake-ups, and teenagers usually find it difficult to fall asleep before 11 p.m.
In the past, research has suggested that sleeping too much on weekends could cause health problems. But no one had looked closely at how weekend sleep affects anxiety.
课后巩固 多维提能
Sojeong Kim, a researcher from the University of Oregon, decided to study this. She focused on teenagers aged 12 to 15, as this is when sleep problems often start. The study used information from around 1,900 teens who had filled out a survey about their feelings of anxiety.
The results showed that teenagers who slept in on weekends had lower anxiety but only if they slept for less than two extra hours. Teenagers who didn't sleep in or lost sleep on the weekend reported higher anxiety levels. Those who slept in more than two extra hours had the most anxiety of all.
课后巩固 多维提能
Kim believes that sleeping too much on weekends can cause “social jet lag (时差)”, just like the tiredness people feel when they travel across time zones. For now, she wants teenagers to know there can be advantages to sleeping in on the weekend. “Getting a little more sleep on weekends might help you feel less anxious,” she says. “But sleeping too much may make things worse.”
