Jules Verne is widely regarded as one of the fathers of science fiction. His “Extraordinary Voyages” series transport readers on grand adventures to the far reaches of Earth and beyond. But Verne did more than just tell entertaining stories — he also predicted over 100 modern‑day inventions and technologies in his writings.
For example, in the 1889 short story In the Year 2889, Verne painted a picture of a highly networked world with global multimedia communications. He described the “phonotelephone,” which sent sound and images over great distances. The main character, Fritz Napoleon Smith, is able to easily communicate via this technology with his wife on another continent:
“Mr. Smith was able distinctly to see his wife despite the distance that separated him from her…Mrs. Smith immediately appeared on the telephonic screen, with her features smiling and her eyes moist (潮湿的) with tears.”
Verne’s technically‑grounded adventure tales represented a new approach to imagining the future through fiction. Unlike other writers of his day who penned more fanciful or supernatural stories, Verne aimed for realism in his futuristic visions, always basing them on cutting‑edge science and his own extensive research. This laid the foundation for the “hard science fiction” of the 20th century and beyond.
Verne is often thought of as a technological optimist, a champion of scientific progress and innovation. But his writings also reveal another perspective. Many of his stories feature a brilliant but mad scientist whose inventions ultimately bring more harm than good. Captain Nemo in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea uses his submarine (潜艇) to violently attack ships. For Verne, human nature determined whether technology would be a force for good or a source of destruction.
The spirit of adventure in Verne’s timeless stories will live on, continuing to inspire generations to push the boundaries of the possible and create the world of tomorrow. That is perhaps the greatest achievement of the extraordinary voyages of Jules Verne.
24. How does Mr. Smith contact his wife in In the Year 2889?
A. By holding an in‑person talk.
B. By making a long‑distance call.
C. By sending a letter back home.
D. By having an instant video chat.
25. What is the “hard science fiction” based on?
A. The unrealistic fantasies.
B. The fictional technologies.
C. The latest research findings.
D. The imagined future worlds.
26. What can we infer about Verne from Captain Nemo’s story?
A. He is disappointed with human nature.
B. He is aware of the danger of technology.
C. He is in favour of scientific development.
D. He is different from the writers of his time.
27. Which of the following best describes Jules Verne according to the text?
A. Strong‑willed.
B. Fantasy‑seeking.
C. Positive‑minded.
D. Forward‑thinking.

Taking the stairs could help you live longer, according to new research from the UEA. The research team investigated whether climbing stairs could play a role in reducing the risks of cardiovascular disease and premature death. After reviewing nearly 1,900 studies, they analyzed data from more than 480,000 participants across nine high-quality studies with a median follow-up period of 14 years. The study population included both healthy participants and those with a previous history of heart problems. Ages ranged from 35 to 84, and 53% of participants were women.
Over the course of the study, people who regularly climb stairs were 39% less likely to die from heart-related problems and 24% less likely to die from any cause, compared with people who don’t climb stairs as often. The study also reveals that people who climbed stairs were less likely to develop major cardiovascular conditions such as heart attack, stroke and heart failure.
Professor Vassilios, from UEA’s Norwich Medical School, said, “Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, with cases nearly doubling between 1990 and 2019. But it is largely preventable through a healthy lifestyle, including regular physical activity, a heart-healthy diet, not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight and managing blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. Taking the stairs is a practical and often overlooked way to build physical activity into daily life. We wanted to better understand how this everyday activity could have life-saving potential.”
Dr. Sophie, also from UEA’s Norwich Medical School, said, “Unlike going to the gym or doing a workout, climbing stairs is something you can easily fit into your day at home, at work or when you’re out. It’s a good option for people who don’t have much time or easy access to exercise. So if you have the choice of taking the stairs or the elevator, go for the stairs as it will help your heart. Even brief bursts of physical activity have beneficial health impacts, and short bouts of stair climbing should be an achievable target to integrate into daily routines.”
While the benefits are clear, researchers caution that stair climbing may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with mobility issues or joint conditions. They also highlight the need for future research using wearable technology to measure activity more accurately and determine optimal recommendations.
28. What is the primary finding of the study conducted by UEA?
A. Heart disease cases surged across recent decades worldwide.
B. Regular stair‑climbing cuts heart‑related death risks sharply.
C. Stairs climbing helps those with past heart‑related illnesses.
D. Healthy routines cure most fatal diseases across our globe.
29. What does Professor Vassilios imply?
A. Heart diseases’ rise requires greater focus on everyday habits.
B. Stair climbing by itself is sufficient to prevent heart disease.
C. Medical treatment is more crucial than workout for heart health.
D. The death rate from heart disease has halved in recent decades.
30. What is the superiority of stairs climbing compared with fitness?
A. More intense.
B. More flexible.
C. More specific.
D. More frugal.
31. What can be inferred about taking the stairs from the text?
A. It may bring down the threats of accidental death.
B. It may boost the development of wearable device.
C. It may reduce chances of suffering from malaria.
D. It may suit poorly those with movement disorder.
D
The ease of looking up facts on a phone anytime is a modern wonder, but are we becoming unwilling to think? A new study indicates that the more we use the internet for information recall, the more we will do so in the future.
Psychologists described how they first asked people a set of difficult questions. One group was told to use a search engine to answer them while the other group answered them from memory. Next, subjects were given easier questions and offered the choice of searching online or not. It turned out that the ones who had previously used the search engine were more likely to use it again — even if it was more inconvenient.
It would be unreasonable to draw the conclusion that, over time, no one will bother remembering anything at all. But such a conclusion may still come as grist to the mill for those who have long been arguing that the internet makes us stupid. The truth, of course, depends on what “stupid” means. If we all come to increase our “cognitive offloading” onto the internet, that may simply promote a shift in the way we value mental abilities. Since recall of facts is now so easy through the internet, we may just become less impressed by factual knowledge, and more impressed by understanding and creativity.
It may help put things in perspective to recall that such argument was already conducted at the very birth of Western culture. An ancient Egyptian inventor showed the Egyptian king his inventions and he was particularly proud of writing: “This invention will make the Egyptians wiser.” But the king thought the opposite. Writing, he argued, would “produce forgetfulness in people’s minds, because they won’t practice their memory.”
Writing itself is just as much an external technology as the internet is. Writing is also a tool of extended cognition. The difference is that we have had thousands of years to get used to it. The truth about the question of whether our reliance on modern electronic devices is better or worse for us is that it’s simply too early to tell.
32. What did online searching cause in the new study?
A. Habitual dependence.
B. Mental effort.
C. Information confusion.
D. Poor memory.
33. What does the underlined phrase “grist to the mill” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Real concern.
B. Effective support.
C. Clear doubt.
D. Mild opposition.
34. Why is the story of the Egyptian king mentioned?
A. To reveal effects of technology.
B. To introduce the origin of writing.
C. To compare different inventions.
D. To show similar worries in history.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. How New Tools Change Our Brain
B. Is the Internet Making Minds Lazy?
C. Cognitive Offloading: A New Option
D. Internet or Memory: Which to Choose?

Many astronomers and researchers hold the view that alien creatures may be keeping an eye on human beings on Earth. Astronomers working for the well-known Breakthrough Listen project have become extremely curious about a huge and mysterious object that recently passed through space near our planet. ___36___ The program is designed to explore outer space and hunt for reliable evidence of advanced civilizations beyond Earth. The experts described this strange object as a long, cigar-shaped rock that is 800 meters long and 80 meters wide.
___37___ Most natural objects floating in outer space never develop such neat and artificial-looking features. For this reason, a large number of scientists refuse to believe it is a natural rock formed by cosmic forces. They guess that it might be a man-made product created by intelligent alien life from other star systems. Scientists gave this special object the name Oumuamua. This word comes from Hawaiian and means “first messenger”. The strange object was first spotted in October and traveled at an amazing speed through our solar system. ___38___
Oumuamua has drawn wide attention because it is the first confirmed interstellar object that has entered our solar system from outer space. It travels at a high speed of more than 300,000 kilometers per hour, fast enough to break away from the Sun’s gravity. Instead of moving around the Sun, it follows its own independent flight path from a distant galaxy. ___39___ The rare appearance of this mysterious object provides scientists with a perfect chance to improve their ability to discover artificial signals and track fast-moving space objects.
Scientists have planned a series of careful and complete observations of Oumuamua in the coming days. They will carefully check its unknown radio spectrum and search for possible water or ice on its surface. Until now, researchers have found no solid proof to confirm the existence of such substances. All the collected data will greatly help future interstellar space research. ___40___
A. The object has unusual straight lines unssen on natural space rocks.
B. It has aroused heated discussion among astronomers around the world.
C. It flew past Earth at a distance 85 times that from the Earth to the Moon.
D. Andrew Siemion believes the object offers a precious research opportunity.
E. In fact, many similar space rocks have been found in recent years.
F. Whether it is natural or man-made, Oumuamua is a valuable research target.
G. Scientists have found clear signs of ice on the mysterious object.

第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
A driving test is still two weeks away, but the mind ___56___ (fail) it several times. You imagine missing ___57___ turn, hearing the examiner’s disappointment, paying another fee and telling people you didn’t pass. You are sitting at home but your body reacts as though the bad things have really happened.
This is one of anxiety’s most convincing tricks: it turns possibility into experience. A thought such as “What if I fail?” begins as a question, but ___58___ (repeat) slowly gives it the emotional weight of a fact. By the time the real event arrives, you may have spent days ___59___ (carry) consequences that never existed outside your imagination.
We often call this preparation. It feels responsible ___60___ (anticipate) every outcome, especially ___61___ something matters deeply. But there is a difference between preparing for difficulty and repeatedly experiencing an imagined disaster. Preparation ends ___62___ an action: revise the chapter, practise parking, check the route. Rumination (沉思) ends only when another frightening scenario begins.
The distinction matters because the mind has limited attention. Every hour spent mentally negotiating with an imaginary future ___63___ (be) an hour unavailable for the present task. Anxiety promises greater control, yet excessive prediction often produces the opposite: less concentration, less energy and less confidence in our ability to respond when reality finally appears.
You don’t have to ___64___ (emotional) arrive everywhere before your life does. Keep your attention to touch: the page you are reading, the road you are driving, the person speaking. When the future arrives, meet it there — not a hundred anxious rehearsals ___65___ (early).

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
This was West Central in the early 2000s, a neighborhood of middle‑class people born and raised by the tracks, people who never dreamed of leaving. Much has changed since then. Luxury apartments have replaced the rusted trains. It’s barely snowed three inches this month.
Outside my window, another cold rain slaps Spofford Avenue. The park across the street is empty, a mess of dead‑brown grass and dry leaves.
In my dreams, though, I see drifts of snow that are deep and blue enough to bury the moon. These are dreams of boyhood, of the gang of neighborhood boys who defined it. Back then, a couple feet of snow meant no school, and we played football every day.
Snow Bowls, as I remember them, were wild, violent events, a cross between sport and warfare. Without helmets or pads, we occasionally knocked each other unconscious. We broke wrists and bit ankles.
On snow days, we gathered on the big field behind our high school, where we’d pick teams, four or five a side. The captains were always the same. Matt Moore was a captain because he was faster and stronger than the rest of us and actually had experience playing organized football. Jimmy White was the other because he brought the football, and he believed supplying the equipment somehow gave him the right.
The games were untimed and there were hardly any rules. We played until the snow melted under our feet, or until someone got seriously hurt. The best Snow Bowls occurred when snow was still falling, covering our tracks and silencing the world around us. In the evenings, we’d play under the field lights, feeling like pros.
Two decades later, I’m the only former Snow Bowler who still resides in Spokane. The ones who moved away like to ask me for updates on home, as if our city is an elderly relative dying from cancer, and I’m the lone caregiver. I always steer our conversations back to the weather, especially the startling lack of snow this winter.

Last weekend, someone floated the idea of a 20‑year high school reunion. At first, we hesitated, but within hours our group chat lit up with “yes”es. And, as if to sweeten the deal, the forecast called for lots of snow in Spokane. Flights were booked, and by this weekend we were finally together again, grinning at familiar faces that time had edited but not erased. Matt was still faster and stronger than the rest of us. Some of us had thinning hair and others had beer bellies and high blood pressure, but we still looked like boys in each other’s eyes. We traded stories, and I complained—again—about the lack of snow, until suddenly someone shouted, “It’s snowing!”
We hurried outside, and sure enough, snow was coming down in thick sheets. We erupted with joy. Jimmy White produced a football, of course, and we made it to the big field behind our high school. Matt and Jimmy were still captains. Too old to tackle, we wrapped each other in bear hugs, squeezing the breath out of one another’s lungs. Everyone laughed. Eventually, the cold won, and we drifted back inside, clapping snow from our sleeves. Later, as I drove home, I found myself scanning vacant lots and schoolyards, imagining some new crew picking teams for a Snow Bowl. The snow returned for the weekend, and so did my boyhood.
