A defining relative clause gives more information about the noun or pronoun before it. We can use who, which or that in defining relative clauses.
e.g. The person who painted this landscape is very talented.
(Which person?)
The painting that he was most famous for is kept in this museum.
(Which painting?)
Tip: Sometimes, if we take the defining relative clause out of a sentence, the sentence makes no sense.
e.g. A calligrapher is someone (×)

e.g. He is the man who I saw yesterday.
他就是我昨天见的那个人。(先行词为 the man)
Give me the book that you read just now.
把你刚才读的书给我。(先行词为 the book)
Kunqu opera is a kind of traditional performing art which is still loved by many Chinese people today.
昆曲是一种至今仍受到许多中国人喜爱的传统表演艺术。

Sandy is writing about some famous calligraphers. Underline the defining relative clauses in her short passage below.
There are many fun stories about great calligraphers who lived in ancient China. First. Wang Xizhi was the famous calligrapher who used to wash his brushes in a pond near his house. He washed his brushes so often that the water turned black! Yan Zhenqing was another interesting calligrapher. When he was young, his family couldn’t afford the things that he needed for calligraphy. Instead, he used a bowl as an inkstone, a wall as paper and mud as ink.
23021
Write at least three sentences about art, using defining relative clauses introduced by who, which or that.

There are many famous works by calligraphers that lived a long time ago. Some of the artists who created these works are well known at home and abroad.
