However, for young people today it is considered completely normal to share pictures of their lives and interact online every day. Fans of social media point out that the world has never been so connected as it has allowed people to make friends, learn about the world and celebrate life. However, many people have concerns about the effects of this new way of living, particularly around the amount and type of information that is shared so openly. Now researchers have found that too much time on social media may indeed have some negative effects. They measured people’s attitudes and feelings before and after browsing social media sites. They found that the more time people spent on social media, the more unhappy they became. There are a number of reasons for this. When browsing social media, people often see photographs and stories showing beautiful holidays, fun parties and fashionable clothes. People rarely post negative stories or bad pictures, so it can be misleading. For those looking at these pictures and comparing them to their own lives, they can end up feeling sad and depressed. They might think their lives are worse in comparison. Even for those people who post positive stories and pictures, they too can feel stressed and worried. The number of “likes” and comments on their posts can make them anxious about their popularity. Of course, there is also the problem of “cyber bullying” where people become victims of bullying online when others make negative or cruel comments about them.  The reality is that social media is a part of modern life and it is not going to go away. This research shows us that it is important to find a balance between our online and offline lives. We don’t have to disconnect from the Internet to live a happy life, but we should realise that the pictures we see and stories we read are only part of a bigger picture. If we can do that, we can protect ourselves and enjoy our lives. 1.What can we infer about young people’s attitude towards social media? ( ) A.They fear its bad influences. Even as his parents struggled to make ends meet, it was very difficult to pay his school fees. It was his uncle who supported his education. “He used to say that he saw a changemaker and artist in me, and he wanted me to complete my education,” he says. After receiving his master’s degree in English and Kannada, he moved back to his hometown because he wanted to make education better for future generations. “I worked for four years before being made the headmaster of a school in 2016,” he says, adding that the old and poor building and lack of infrastructure (基础设施) made him think of his own school’s state. Using his own money, he started small — he planted a few trees across the campus, and started repair work on the building. But he knew he could not fund the repair of the school alone and would need more help. So he used the power of social media (社交媒体) to raise money. “I started posting pictures of the school with my repairs on social media. Word spread and, surprisingly, many people came forward to help me,” he says. Today this school is a far cry from what it used to be — with colourful walls, lots of infrastructure, trees, a garden, and a library with picture books and audio⁃visual resources (视听资源) in English and Kannada. And the number of students has grown from 76 to 136.  “The change is amazing,” says Suleman Sheikh, an official from the school. “It didn’t happen overnight. But now comes a surprising Gen Z plot twist. Those born between 1997 and 2012 are reviving (复兴) reading — it’s physical books rather than digital that they are reading. This week the 22⁃year⁃old model Kaia Gerber launched her own book club, Library Science. Gerber describes it as “a platform for sharing books, featuring new writers, hosting conversations with artists we admire, and continuing to build a community of people who are as excited about literature as I am”. Gerber isn’t alone. Last year in the UK, 669 million physical books were sold, the highest overall level ever recorded. Research from Nielsen Book Data highlights that it is print books that Gen Z favor, accounting for 80% of purchases from November 2022 to 2023.Libraries are also reporting a slight increase in Gen Z users who favor their quiet over noisy coffee shops. In the UK, in⁃person visits are up 71%. “The Gen Z book range is incredibly broad,” says Hali Brown, the 28⁃year⁃old co⁃founder of Books on the Bedside, a popular social media account devoted to Gen Z reading habits. “There is a lot of appreciation for literary fiction, memoirs, translated fiction and classics in particular,” says Brown. Gerber’s first literary guest was the Iranian⁃American writer Kaveh Akbar, who joined the model on a video call to discuss his first novel, Martyr! The 28⁃year⁃old model Kendall Jenner became the unofficial face of this new “Lit Girls’ Club” when she was pictured on a ship reading Tonight I’m Someone Else, a collection of essays by Chelsea Hodson. After the photos of Jenner were published, there was a stream of online talk stating we had entered an era of performative reading. Brown speaks out her opinion, “I think whoever is eager to explore the world of reading shouldn’t be shut down in this way because they’re beautiful or have large Internet presences. A.By listing figures. B.By drawing conclusions. C.By presenting reasons. D.By asking questions. 解析:选A 推理判断题。根据第三段可知,作者在第三段通过列举数字来说明Z世代新的阅读趋势。故选A。 7.What is Brown’s attitude towards Jenner’s performative reading? A.Supportive. B.Curious. C.Disapproving. D.Confused. 解析:选A 观点态度题。根据最后一段“Brown speaks out her opinion, ‘I think whoever is eager ...and that’s great.’”可知,Brown对Jenner的表演性阅读持支持的态度。故选A。 8.Which of the following best serves as the title for the text? Could the digital data now put a time limit on our memories? 9   The materials that phones and computers are made of can decay (腐蚀) over time. 10 When digital data degrades, it can quickly make it impossible to open a file. Also, as formats and devices become out of date, it may become impossible to read files from previous decades.   11 Large companies can still lose data.In 2019, social media platform MySpace admitted losing more than 12 years’ worth of users’ music uploads. The widespread use of streaming services for music, TV and film means that people no longer own the content that they watch and listen to; they just pay for the right to access it.If streaming companies decide to remove content, or go out of business, users will lose access.  Licensing rather than buying content is an example of how our behaviour towards digital content has changed. 12 This means that, in addition to the challenge of keeping our data safe, people have to consider what to preserve and what can be thrown away.  So, what can we do? Technology writer Jack Schofield said that “data doesn’t really exist unless you have at least two copies of it”. 13 Probably more than one.Academic Paul Royster suggests that we should all take time to consider what content we personally believe is worth saving.Perhaps the answer is just to avoid digital altogether.  A.It’s necessary to store memories now. B.Digital memories might not last forever. C.Thus, this will impact the data they store. D.So it’s important to back up what is important to us. E.Storing information in the cloud can also present problems. F.However, the quality of the data they store will remain unchanged. G.Another example is that we take far more pictures than people did in the past. 选项中的“Another example”与上文的“an example”相呼应。 13.选D 上文提到杰克·斯科菲尔德的观点,为了确保安全,应拥有至少两份数据备份。故D项“所以把那些对我们来说很重要的东西进行备份是很有必要的”承接上文,符合语境。 83 / 116 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
