The History of Movies
The history of movies began in the late 19th century. The first public screening of a movie took place in Paris in 1895, organized by the Lumière brothers. Those early movies were short, silent, and in black and white. They showed simple scenes like workers leaving a factory or a train arriving at a station. The audience was amazed by the moving images.
In the 1920s, sound was introduced to movies. This changed the film industry forever. The first “talkie” was The Jazz Singer (1927). Then, in the 1930s, colour movies began to appear. Technology continued to develop rapidly, and today we have 3D movies, IMAX, and computer-generated effects. Movies have become one of the most popular forms of entertainment in the world.

Is longer better?
Many reasons result in the rise of longer movies
Where have those traditional hour-and-a-half-long films from the old days gone? In recent years, we’ve seen more and more big Hollywood films run for three hours or more.
There were films like Avatar: The Way of Water (《阿凡达:水之道》) that lasted three hours and 10 minutes, and Oppenheimer (《奥本海默》) that went on for three hours and nine minutes. On Oct 20, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon (《花月杀手》) went for about three and a half hours. When it premiered (首映) at the Cannes Film Festival in May, some people got sleepy, and there was a long line for the restroom. People started asking: Why have films become so long?
Franchises (特许经营权) are one driver of longer films as studios (工作室) want to make the most out of their expensive intellectual property (知识产权), said The Economist. The hope is that a great, longer film will draw audiences away from streaming platforms (流媒体平台) and into cinemas. This plan has often paid off: Avengers: Endgame (《复仇者联盟:终局之战》), Marvel’s three-hour superhero film, was the highest-grossing (票房最高的) film in 2019.
Also, longer films have to do with the growing influence of directors (导演). Studios have given big names, like Nolan (诺兰) and Scorsese (斯科塞斯), greater creative freedom (自由). Otherwise, streaming platforms may lure (诱惑) the big names away. They do not have to worry as much about the length because viewers can pause (暂停) at will, noted Vanity Fair.
However, longer running times also bring some problems. Cinemas can play fewer films because a three-hour film takes up more screen time. A longer Marvel film can mean the shutting out of indie (独立的) and international filmmakers, noted MovieWeb.

A.They are all very long.

A.a long film that doesn’t have franchises.
B.a long film that made a lot of money.
C.a film that has the most expensive intellectual property.

3.Who caused the longer films according to the second reason?
A.The studios.
B.The audience.
C.The famous directors.
D.The streaming platforms.
4.What’s the disadvantage of the longer films?
a. People may get tired.
b. Fewer films can be shown in cinemas.

I am a free dog called Johannes. I live in a large park by the sea. Freya is one of the three Bison (野牛) who live in an area with a fence (篱笆) within the park. Recently, I wanted to set them free and I almost succeeded.
Towards the end of the journey, Freya said to me, “We can’t go on that ship.”
“But it’s right down there,” I said. “We’ve already done the hard part. The goats (羊) have performed their duties, jumping and crying and making chaos (混乱) all around, so you wouldn’t be found when you hid among them. Everything’s ready.” I was worried, for the sky was growing brighter, and it would be more difficult for the goats to hide the Bison from humans as they went down the hill.
“No,” Freya said. “We’re not going. We thought we could, but this short journey has already proven we are not ready for more. We can’t make it.”
“But why let me—let all of us—go through all this trouble?” I asked.
“You needn’t be angry,” Freya said. “Or sad. Or even surprised. Look at us. We’re slow and old. We couldn’t go across the sea in strange boats. Seeing this is enough.”
She was still looking at the morning sea, which had grown brighter and whiter. She turned to me then. “Thank you, Johannes.” She turned to the goats. “We are so thankful. We have lived quiet lives. But you have freed our eyes and our minds. What you did today mattered a great deal. You gave us the sea. And we will not forget it.”
I tried to organize my thoughts. Was all this for nothing? And would we all have to go back to the park? I stood on the top of that small mountain, wondering what to do.
Then one of the goats said to me, “You could come with us. We will protect you, and when you reach the mainland, you can stay with us, or simply run free. There are a million free dogs like you. You can run with them and see places and things.”
I thought about this. I knew it was true. I knew I would go.
1.What did Freya think of their journey?
A.It was worth it. B.It was too long. C.It was boring. D.It was smooth.
2.What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A.The goats messed up everything. B.Their plan was very well-organized.
C.The Bison were at the foot of the hill. D.Their secret was discovered by humans.
3.What would Johannes do in the end?
A.Protect the goats. B.Join the Bison.
C.Continue the journey. D.Return to the park.
4.What is the theme of the story?
A.Some friends cannot be trusted. B.Humans can make friends with animals.
C.We can make choices for others. D.Everyone can find their place in the world.

D.the first film that premiered on streaming platforms.

【答案】1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D
1.文章第七段中,Freya对Johannes说:“What you did today mattered a great deal. You gave us the sea. And we will not forget it.”(你今天做的非常重要。
2. 第三段中Johannes提到:“The goats have performed their duties, jumping and crying and making chaos... so you wouldn’t be found... Everything’s ready.”,说明山羊们按照计划制造混乱来掩护野牛,且Johannes认为“一切都准备好了”,这暗示他们的计划是经过精心组织和安排的(very well-organized)。A项错误,山羊并没有搞砸,而是履行了职责;C项错误,文中说他们正在下山(went down the hill),并未明确说已在山脚;D项错误,文中说天色变亮会增加难度,但未说秘密已被发现。
3.文章最后两段提到,一只山羊邀请Johannes一起去大陆(“You could come with us...when you reach the mainland...”),Johannes思考后认为这是真的,并说:“I knew I would go.”(我知道我会去。)
