Among the world’s waste-recycling pioneers, Germany is the leader. The country has quite a detailed way of sorting their waste-down to the color of glass waste, the type of paper, the separate bin for metals, etc.
Here below are what you should know about Germany’s waste sorting system:
◇You are expected to gather your waste in your apartment/housing area’s local public garbage bins.
◇There are commonly several types of public garbage bins available in the German’s apartment/housing areas:
Blue bin — for paper and cardboard
Green and white bin — for glass, different bins for differently colored glass, not available for holiday decorations and lights
Yellow/orange bin — for plastic and metals
Brown bin — for goods that can be changed naturally by bacteria into substances that don’t harm the environment, like leftovers, fruit and vegetables
Gray/black bin — for everything else that can’t be recycled such as used cat litter and animal waste
◇Some items don’t belong in these public garbage bins. Items like used batteries, electronics, unused paints, and lights must be returned to the special agent/locations so they can be properly recycled. Other items such as clothes, shoes, and oversized rubbish and furniture are advised to be donated or sold.
◇There’s this thing called Pfand in Germany, a certain part of the price for a bottled drink that you get back if you send back the bottle to certified (有资历的) shops. German law requires shops over a certain size selling bottled drinks have a Pfandruckgabestelle, or place for bottles with deposits (押金). These bottles usually made of glass or plastic will be refilled. Of course, there’re strict health regulations.
21. Which bin should the fallen leaves be classified into?
A. The blue bin. B. The brown bin.
C. The grey/black bin. D. The green and white bin.
22. How can Germans deal with some used sneakers?

During the lively Paris Olympics, while the spotlight shone on the athletes, a group of unsung heroes worked tirelessly behind the scenes — the Olympic volunteers. This year, out of 300,000 applicants, around 45,000 were chosen as volunteers, with 20 percent coming from nearly 150 countries. These volunteers wore bright green uniforms (制服) to be easily noticed in the purple venues (场馆). They offered help to viewers and media alike, making them an important part of the Olympic experience.
On my first day as a reporter, I met a technical problem with my media system account. Thankfully, Chinese volunteer Guo came to help me out. “I hope to improve my language, communication skills, and problem- solving methods through this event,” said 24-year-old Guo from Wuhan, Central China’s Hubei Province, who was studying wireless communication at the Paris Institute of Digital Technology. As a former professional swimmer, Guo saw this as her chance to take part in the Olympics, though in a different role. Another Chinese volunteer, Yang, faced challenges in managing her job and volunteer duties. Despite giving up her holidays, she felt great pride in contributing to the event.
One of my most memorable experiences was meeting with a French volunteer. When I needed help to find the visitor center, a young man on a scooter (小型摩托车) appeared, like a sort of “Monkey King riding a cloud”, and offered to take me there. After helping me, he expressed his admiration for the Beijing Olympics and his desire to visit China again.
Volunteers like them were seen everywhere — from bus stops to competition venues — offering directions and helping with a smile. When large crowds left the venues after the events, causing overcrowding, some volunteers sat on high chairs with loudspeakers, providing directions to go outside in both English and French with a smile. These amazing volunteers, truly show the Olympic spirit, making the event and Paris shine even brighter.
24. Why might the volunteers wear bright green uniforms?
A. To stand out in the crowd. B. To show love for athletes.
C. To fit in with the venues. D. To stand for their countries.
25. What do we know about Guo?
A. She found it hard to balance her job and volunteer work.
B. She both swam and volunteered in the Paris Olympics.
C. She wanted to improve herself through volunteer work.
D. She wasn’t as patient and helpful as the French volunteer.
26. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To doubt the organization of the Paris Olympics,
B. To praise the service of Paris Olympic volunteers.
C. To show the meaning of hosting Olympic Games.
D. To provide a detailed schedule of Olympic events.
27. How is the text mainly developed?
A. By listing the benefits of volunteer work.
B. By discussing historical Olympic events.
C. By comparing different views on Olympics.
D. By sharing personal stories and experiences.

A radio show host recently asked me what kind of parent I am. I told him I try to be a lifeguard parent. Lifeguard parents keep an eye on what’s going on with their kids, ready to help if necessary, but stay out of the way when there is no need. Lifeguard parenting is described as a form of care with three stages — open attention, focused attention and active intervention (干涉).
Open attention should be a parent’s default (默认的) state. They care about what their child is doing while staying away from them. They let the child operate independently, though their child may get into a play which includes uncertain results and possibility of physical danger. In this state, a sense of trust develops between parents and children, and parents are likely to feel amazed by what their child can do.
Focused attention kicks in when parents notice warning signs. They might communicate with their child, reminding them to think through their actions without explicitly telling them what to do. For example, the parent might say, “Do you think that branch (树枝) can support you?” instead of shouting, “Stay off that branch”.
Finally, active intervention happens when parents recognize that they must step into a situation to protect their child. One mother told me about her active intervention, which she calls the red-white-blue rule: Only intervene if you see red blood, white bone or blue bruises (瘀伤). Maybe she was joking, but the point is, kids grow up well when parents provide a safe environment and then get out of the way.
The goal is to spend most of the time in open attention. Focused attention might happen only once every few days, and active intervention should be seldom. I’d love to see “lifeguard parenting” become something we all recognize as being a happy way to raise kids. Kids can do so much more than we expect if they are given the chance.
28. What do parents do in the state of open attention?
A. They respect kids’ independence. B. They play together with kids.
C. They amaze kids with full attention. D. They protect kids from potential dangers.
29. What does the underlined word “explicitly” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Politely. B. Patiently. C. Directly. D. Confidently.
30. Why does the author mention the red-white-blue rule in paragraph 4?
A. To explain the timing of active intervention.
B. To show the value of active intervention.
C. To stress the safety of active intervention.
D. To draw readers’ attention to active intervention.
31. What effect may lifeguard parenting have according to the last paragraph?
A. Kids can show potential abilities. B. Parents can live a traditional life.
C. Kids can learn from lifeguards. D. Parents can have full control over kids.
D
Different cultures have various festivals, but the joy and eagerness are the same. For us adults, celebrations are a way of taking a break from heavy work, re-live past memories, and keeping traditions alive, but what about children?
Well, for our kids, this is the perfect time to learn and enrich their líves with knowledge. At festivals, I remember, I introduced the value and importance of personal connections and cultural treasure to my kids while they were having fun. Child experts strongly suggest that parents tell their kids various rituals (仪式) of the festivals and have them join in celebratory activities.
I think every festival has a rich backstory, and every story has plenty of lessons and values to teach. Besides, historical and geographical background connected with festivals give reasons why we celebrate festivals with specific rituals.
Kids need to have a deep-rooted understanding of the identity (身份) of their culture and traditions. Because this not only helps in developing a positive sense of identity but also pushes kids to connect with their cultures through rituals, native decorations, food, etc., to keep continuity over generations. Thus, parents should make kids a central part of all festivals.
It is no secret that gifts bring joy and excitement to children. Every time I give gifts to my kids, I find the gifts excite their senses and make them feel valued. I must make my kids believe that their families care about their interests and desires. Thus, gifting is a meaningful way to express feelings to kids. What’s more, the act of giving and receiving gifts helps develop feelings of care and kindness.
32. What do festivals mean for children?
A. A perfect time to have a rest. B. A chance to increase knowledge.
C. A memory of their old days. D. An effort to protect traditions.
33. Why should kids be “a central part of all festivals”?
A. They enjoy festival backstories. B. They love history and geography.
C. They must know who they are. D. They can bring much happiness.
34. Who are the intended readers of the text?
A. Kids. B. Teachers. C. Headmasters. D. Parents.
35. What is a suitable title of the passage?
A. Importance of Festivals in Kids’ Life
B. Parents' Role in Celebrating Festivals
C. Benefits of Festival Rituals to Kids
D. Principles of Kids' Love for Festivals

Making tough decisions is a part of life. Whether it’s choosing a university, changing a career path, or ending a friendship, these choices can leave us feeling confused. While there’s no magic formula, a thoughtful approach can make the process clearer and less stressful.
Firstly, give yourself a clear picture. 36 Write down all your options. Then, for each one, list the potential benefits and drawbacks. Seeing your thoughts on paper can prevent them from swirling endlessly in your mind and help you visualize the outcomes more objectively.
37 It’s easy to get caught up in what others expect from you — your parents, teachers, or friends. However, this decision is ultimately yours. Ask yourself: “What do I truly want? What values are most important to me?” Aligning your choice with your own core values is key to long-term satisfaction.
Don’t underestimate the power of seeking different perspectives. 38 Talk to people you trust-mentors, family members, or friends who have faced similar dilemmas. They might offer insights or ask questions you haven’t considered, which can shed new light on your options.
Avoid making a quick choice. For significant decisions, if possible, allow yourself a specific period to reflect, like 24 or 48 hours. This creates necessary space between the impulse to decide and the final action. 39
Finally, remember that few decisions are truly ever lasting. 40 What seems like a perfect path today might need adjustment tomorrow. The goal is not to find the one “perfect” choice, but to make the best decision you can with the information and self-awareness you have at this moment.
A. Listen to your inner voice.
B. Gather as much information as you can.
C. Life is unpredictable and full of changes.
D. This doesn’t mean you should ignore advice.
E. Start by defining the decision you need to make.
F. We often fear making the “wrong” choice forever.
G. It prevents knee-jerk (本能的) reactions and often brings a sense of calm clarity.

W: The New York Times (NYT or NY Times) is an American daily newspaper based in New York City with a worldwide readership. Founded in 1851, NY Times has since won 130 Pulitzer Prizes (the most of any newspaper), and has long been regarded within the industry as a national “newspaper of record”. It is ranked 18th in the world by circulation and 3rd in the U.S. In the 1970s, the paper introduced a number of new lifestyle sections including Weekend and Home, with the aim of attracting more advertisers and readers. Many criticized the move for betraying the paper’s mission. On September 7th, 1976, the paper switched from an eight-column format to a six-column format. The overall page width stayed the same, with each column becoming wider. On September 14th, 1987, NY Times printed the heaviest ever newspaper, at over 12 pounds (5.4 kg) and 1,612 pages. And it was one of the last newspapers to adopt color photography, especially on the front page. The paper’s motto, “All the News That’s Fit to Print”, appears in the upper left-hand corner of the front page.

A. By returning it to special agents. B. By placing it in a specific location.
C. By giving it away to those in need. D. By donating it to a Pfandruckgabestelle.
23. What is the aim of Pfand?
A. To collect money for some shops. B. To help shops reuse plastic or glass.
C. To reduce the broken bottles. D. To encourage bottles to be returned.
B 22. C 23. D
根据倒数第二段关键句“Other items such as clothes, shoes, and oversized rubbish and furniture are advised to be donated or sold.”(建议捐赠或出售衣服、鞋子、超大垃圾和家具等其他物品。)
根据最后一段关键句“There’s this thing called Pfand in Germany, a certain part of the price for a bottled drink that you get back if you send back the bottle to certified shops.”(在德国有一种叫做Pfand的东西,它是瓶装饮料价格的一部分,如果你把瓶子送回经过认证的商店,你会得到它。)

A 25. C 26. B 27. D
故选A。
根据文章第二段““I hope to improve my language, communication skills, and problem- solving methods through this event,” said 24- year- old Guo from Wuhan, Central China’s Hubei Province, who was studying wireless communication at the Paris Institute of Digital Technology.(24岁的郭来自中国中部湖北省武汉市,正在巴黎数字技术学院学习无线通信。
根据文章第二段“On my first day as a reporter, I met a technical problem with my media system account. Thankfully, Chinese volunteer Guo came to help me out.(在我做记者的第一天,我遇到了一个媒体系统帐户的技术问题。幸运的是,中国志愿者郭来帮助我)”及第三段“One of my most memorable experiences was meeting with a French volunteer.(我最难忘的经历之一是与一位法国志愿者的会面)”可知,作者通过分享自己在巴黎奥运会的故事和经历,展示了志愿者们在奥运会期间所做的努力和贡献。故选D。
C
A 29. C 30. A 31. A
根据第二段中“Open attention should be a parent’s default (默认的) state. They care about what their child is doing while staying away from them. They let the child operate independently, though their child may get into a play which includes uncertain results and possibility of physical danger.(开放关注应该是父母的默认状态。他们关心孩子在做的事情,同时远离他们。他们让孩子独立操作,尽管孩子可能会进入一个结果不确定、可能存在身体危险的游戏。)”可知,在开放关注的状态下,父母尊重孩子的独立性。故选A。
根据第三段中“Focused attention kicks in when parents notice warning signs. They might communicate with their child, reminding them to think through their actions without explicitly telling them what to do.(当父母注意到警告信号时,集中注意力就开始起作用了。他们可能会与孩子交流,提醒他们仔细考虑自己的行为,而不会explicitly告诉他们该怎么做。)”可知,集中注意力阶段父母会提醒孩子仔细考虑自己的行为,但是不会明确地告诉他们该怎么做,所以explicitly意为“明确地,直接地”,与Directly意思相近。故选C。
30. 推理判断题。根据第四段中“Finally, active intervention happens when parents recognize that they must step into a situation to protect their child. One mother told me about her active intervention, which she calls the red-white-blue rule: Only intervene if you see red blood, white bone or blue bruises (瘀伤).(最后,当父母意识到他们必须介入某种情况来保护孩子时,就会发生积极干预。一位母亲告诉我她的积极干预,她称之为红白蓝规则:只有当你看到鲜血、白骨或瘀伤时才干预。)”可知,作者提到红白蓝规则是为了解释积极干预的时机。故选A。
根据最后一段中“The goal is to spend most of the time in open attention. Focused attention might happen only once every few days, and active intervention should be seldom. I’d love to see “lifeguard parenting” become something we all recognize as being a happy way to raise kids. Kids can do so much more than we expect if they are given the chance.(我们的目标是把大部分时间花在开放关注上。集中注意力可能每隔几天才发生一次,而积极干预应该很少发生。我希望看到“救生员式育儿”成为我们都认可的一种快乐的育儿方式。如果给孩子们机会,他们能做的比我们预期的要多得多。)”可知,救生员式育儿可以让孩子展示出潜在的能力。故选A。
B 33. C 34. D 35. A
由第二段中“Well, for our kids, this is the perfect time to learn and enrich their líves with knowledge. (好吧,对于我们的孩子来说,这是学习和丰富知识的最佳时机。)”可知,节日对孩子们意味着增加知识的机会。故选B项。
33. 推理判断题。由第四段中“Kids need to have a deep-rooted understanding of the identity (身份) of their culture and traditions. Because this not only helps in developing a positive sense of identity but also pushes kids to connect with their cultures through rituals, native decorations, food, etc., to keep continuity over generations. Thus, parents should make kids a central part of all festivals. (孩子们需要对自己的文化和传统有一个根深蒂固的理解。因为这不仅有助于培养积极的身份认同感,而且还促使孩子们通过仪式、本土装饰、食物等与他们的文化联系起来,以保持几代人的连续性。因此,父母应该让孩子成为所有节日的核心部分。)”可知,让孩子成为节日的中心是为了帮助他们了解自己的文化身份,知道自己是谁。故选C项。
34. 推理判断题。由全文内容(多次提到parents),第二段中“Well, for our kids, this is the perfect time to learn and enrich their líves with knowledge. (好吧,对于我们的孩子来说,这是学习和丰富知识的最佳时机。)”和最后一段中“It is no secret that gifts bring joy and excitement to children. (礼物给孩子们带来快乐和兴奋,这已经不是什么秘密了。)”可知,本文意在指导父母如何通过节日教育孩子,因此目标读者是父母,故选D项。
35. 主旨大意题。通读全文可知,本文主要讲述了节日对于孩子们的重要意义,孩子们在节日中可以学到什么,并对给孩子们过节日提供了建议,A项“节日在孩子生活中的重要性”适合做标题。故选A项。
