John wanted to learn everything about welding and decided he’d make welding his career. But one night class wouldn’t be enough. John went to Hobart Welding School for real, technical training. For the past 18 years, John has been a welder. He now works for the EEW Group. The company is in the process of opening a factory that will produce monopiles for offshore wind turbines (涡轮机). Wind turbines produce eco-friendly electricity. A typical day for John includes a number of tasks and skills. One minute, he’s driving a forklift. C Technology is forever changing the way we get our news. Many people now get a lot of their news on electronic devices, instead of traditional media, such as newspapers, television or radio. Now, there is a new way we get the news: computer-created news readers. Recently, China’s Xinhua launched (推出) the world’s first AI news presenters with the Chinese search engine Sogou. The news readers created by machine learning technology are based on two real-life newsmen. One is able to present newscasts in English; the other, in Mandarin Chinese. Machine learning is used to examine video images and sounds of the two newsmen, which look and sound like real people. Some machine learning experts said the system showed off China’s latest progress in voice recognition, text-to-speech technology and data analysis. But several experts suggested that the term AI does not correctly describe abilities of the robotic news readers. On social media, many Chinese noted that the AI presenters did not seem real. People blamed them for not being more lifelike. Others wondered about the effects robots might have on employment and workers. Some people argued that only low-level jobs requiring heavy labor will be easily replaced by robots. Others praised the technology as a way for companies to make money from low-cost labor machines. Some businesses have experimented with similar technology for possible use in news operations. Britain’s BBC recently released a video that used machine learning to make it look like one of its news readers speaking different languages. The London-based company that developed the system says its goal is to “remove the language barrier” for many different kinds of video across the Internet. 8. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 1? A. Introduce the topic of the text. B. Summarize the different opinions. C. Add some data about the AI presenters. D. Compare different ways of getting news. 9. What is the machine learning technology used to do? A. To bring newscasts up to date every hour. B. To help AI presenters speak more fluently. C. To keep AI presenters from making any mistakes. D. To ensure images and sounds are like those of real persons. 10. What are some people worried about when AI presenters were launched? A. Robots will rule over the world in the end. B. Robots may threaten some people’s employment. C. Robots may endanger most people’s health. D. Robots will eventually replace human all over. 11. What can we know from the last paragraph? A. BBC has removed the language barrier in newscasts. B. BBC has done similar experiments as Xinhua does. C. BBC shows interest in Xinhua’s AI news presenters. D. BBC’s news readers can explore different technologies. D When Gijsbert Cirkel coached his son’s soccer team, he remembers the kids resting under a tree after a game. They put their feet in the air and cried, “Our feet are hot!” Their games hard been played on artificial turf (人工草坪), which can get so hot that it burns. To address this problem. Cirkel and his Dutch research team developed a new water-storage system that cools the turf by using rainwater evaporation (蒸发). A hydrologist, Cirkel studies the water cycle. His team’s new system collects and stores rainwater about 8. 5cm below a playing field. As this water evaporates, it cools the playing surface, similar to how sweat cools our bodies. Although natural grass is cooler, the new system does a better job of keeping the turf temperature down. On a hot June day, regular artificial grass reaches 62. 2℃! That is 25℃ hotter than natural grass, while the new system is only 1. 7℃ warmer than the real grass. The new turf system looks like a sandwich. The artificial grass goes on top, followed by filler material, with the rainwater storage below it. The team included a waterproof liner and used fiber (纤维) filler instead of rubber to improve performance. Plastic blocks in the storage area have holes for water flow. The researchers built four small fields in Amsterdam for outdoor tests — two with the new system topped by artificial turf and one with real grass, while the last had standard artificial turf without water storage. The new system stored more rainwater and significantly cooled the surface. “The new system is a good effort and a good step forward, ” says Vasilis Vasilou, a researcher at the Yale School of Public Health in New Haven, Conn. He likes the new idea, even though it doesn’t solve all the problems with artificial turf, for example, artificial grass has harmful chemicals, which are bad for players. 12. What is a problem about artificial turf? A. It gets too hot in the sun. B. It wastes plenty of water. C. It results in light pollution. D. It is soft for soccer games. 13. What can be inferred about the field tests? A. They were carried out indoors. B. They were against the law. C. They stopped real grass growing. D. They showed a cool success. 14. What is Vasilou’s attitude to the new system? A. Worried. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Uncaring. 15. Which is the most suitable title for the text? A. The Disadvantage of Artificial Turf. B. A Practical Way to Collect Rainwater. C. Unlocking the Secret of Natural Grass. D. Using Rainwater to Cool Artificial Turf. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) I’m often asked how to study English effectively.
