The First Aid That Saved a Life
First aid is the first help we give to a person who is suddenly hurt or ill, and it can save lives if we act quickly and correctly. Last summer, my younger brother was playing in the garden when he slipped on the wet ground and hurt his ankle, and people should always be careful not to slip on such wet ground. His ankle began to swell immediately, and a small blister appeared on the skin. We knew that we should not move him carelessly, so we called the ambulance at once and told the operator everything clearly. The paramedics arrived in a few minutes and checked his vital signs carefully. They told us to keep the injured part still and to wrap it gently with a clean piece of fabric. My brother felt great ease when the doctors said that the injury was minor and that there was no serious damage to his nerves. His swollen foot was treated with a cold cloth, and he was told to rest in the hospital ward for a few days.
Tthe next week, we attended a first aid course at school, where we learned many useful techniques. The teacher gave us a leaflet about common accidents, and she explained that every part of the body has its own important organs. She told us that a burn from acid, a cut from a piece of glass, or a bite from a mosquito could all be dangerous if we did not deal with them properly. We learned how to stop bleeding: first, press the wound with a clean cloth to help it bleed less; then, if the wound is deep, cover it and go to the hospital quickly. We also learned how to help a person who is drowning in the water, and how to avoid an electric shock by staying away from broken wires. The teacher warned us that a small layer of skin can protect us from many dangers, and that we should never feel panic when an accident happens. Instead, we should stay calm, check the situation, and act in a practical and careful way.
One day, our neighbour, an elderly man, choked on a piece of steak while he was eating dinner. His face turned red, and he could not speak or breathe, and his throat seemed to be blocked. My father, who had learned the right technique, quickly helped him: he stood behind the old man, made a fist, and pressed it against the man's upper stomach with a strong and quick motion. The piece of meat came out, and the old man could breathe again. We helped him to his feet and gave him a cup of water, and he thanked us with a warm smile. The fellow diners in the restaurant all cheered, and the waiter said that our quick action had saved the man's life. We learned that when a person is choked, we should never interrupt the rescue or waste time, and we should not slap him on the back in the wrong way. The most urgent thing is to keep calm and act at once, because every second counts.
Since then, I have kept a first aid box at home with bandages, needles and an IV needle, and I have also learned to read the manual that comes with it. I know that we should check a person's breathing and see if he is face up or face down before giving help, and that we should call the doctors immediately if the situation is serious. We should never delay when an accident happens, and we should try our best to justify every action with correct knowledge. A person's welfare is the most important thing, and we should always be ready to help others. Some people live in the suburb or in a foggy area, and they should keep the first aid skills fresh in their minds. I have learned that even a simple technique can make a big difference, and that the true value of first aid lies in the lives we can save. The doctor also told us that we should protect our skin from the strong rays of the sun and from dangerous radiation, because they can harm the body like a silent toxin. Even a small cut of a few millimetres should be cleaned carefully, and a burn that goes underneath the skin needs professional help. In our daily life, we should be careful of the electric wires, keep the carpet dry, and make sure that the bath water is not too hot when we use the bathtub. A person who feels loose and weak after an illness should rest, and if he suddenly collapses, we must help him at once. We should also use our sense of touch to feel the wound, because it tells us whether it is getting better or worse. My dream is to join a volunteer group and help more people, I have also learned that when a person is choking, we should never grab him too hard or make him more desperate. The food stuck in the obstruction of the throat can be removed with the right skill, and we should always act with a tight and firm hand. If a friend sprains his ankle, we should help sb. to one's feet him carefully, and if he begins to scream in pain, we should calm him down and let him swallow some water slowly. Some people who often sleep in are out of shape, and a person who lives in a foggy town should be even more careful. When the accident happened, the victim was taken to the hospital at once, and his bandage was tied tightly enough to stop the bleeding. As a member of the school first aid club, I paid my membership and began to take part in the training every week, because every life deserves our care and attention.
一些经常睡懒觉(sleep in)的人身体状况不佳(out of shape),住在多雾(foggy)城镇的人更应该小心。

Last month, I was having dinner in a small restaurant with my family when a sudden emergency happened. An old man at the next table suddenly turned red and could not speak or breathe. He was clearly choked on a piece of food, and his face showed great panic. At that moment, everybody in the restaurant felt nervous and did not know what to do. My father, who had learned first aid, stood up quickly and went to help him. He used the correct technique: he stood behind the old man, made a fist, and pressed it against the man's upper stomach with a strong and quick motion. After a few seconds, the piece of meat came out of the man's throat, and he could breathe again. We helped him to his feet and gave him a cup of water, and his face slowly returned to its normal colour. The fellow diners in the restaurant all clapped their hands, and the waiter called us heroes.
The next day, we went to the hospital to visit an old friend who had been hurt in a traffic accident. His leg was seriously injured, and it began to swell after the accident. The doctors checked his vital signs carefully and told us that his injury was minor and that there was no damage to the nerves. They used a clean piece of fabric to wrap the wound and stop the bleeding. The nurse also gave him an IV needle to supply fluids, and she said that he should rest in the ward for a few days. The old man was very grateful and told us that we should always be ready to help others in danger.
In the afternoon, we attended a first aid lesson given by a doctor in the hospital. The doctor explained that we should never feel panic when an accident happens, and that we should always act in a practical and calm way. He told us that before giving help, we should check whether the patient is face up or face down, and we should never delay when every second counts. He also taught us how to stop bleeding: first, press the wound with a clean cloth; then, if the wound is deep, cover it and go to the hospital quickly. He warned us that a burn from acid or an electric shock from a broken wire could be very dangerous, and that we should stay away from such dangers. The doctor gave every student a leaflet about first aid and told us to keep it at home.
From that day on, I have kept a first aid box at home with bandages, needles and a useful manual. I have also learned how to help a person who is drowning in the water and how to deal with a person who is in danger. I know that the most urgent thing in an emergency is to stay calm and act at once, and that every life deserves our care. My father's quick action that night taught me the true value of first aid, and I have decided to learn more skills so that I can help more people in the future.
