Growing up,I struggled greatly with acne ()I truly felt awful upon catching a look of myself in the
mirror.I turned to makeup as a way in which to hide, and out of all the products I could have chosen,I chose the
tickets of the thick.
Is struggling with acne really the worst thing that can happen? No.But throughout my teenage years,YES.
If simply getting up 30 minutes earlier every morning was going to help me feel better and accepted, then of
course I was going to do it.
Fortunately, after years oftrying a variety of acne remedies ()I was able to find a solution, and rarely
struggled with my skin since. However,I still find myself applying a layer of makeup every single day. Why?
Ultimately,I've found that it's like putting on a mask that gives me power. It's like a way of telling myself,
"OK,I am ready!I can do this!"As one of the best teachers I ever had taught me-"Lippy (lipsticks)on,smile
on."Do the thing that empowers you and makes you happy, and it'll help you bring your best to every day
Last year,I traveled to the UK to compete in the England Athletics Senior Championships.Lo and behold,
the following morning-race day-I went to get my makeup out of bag and it wasn't there.I'd left it in the
Isle of Man!It sounds so silly, but my heart sank.
Finally,I knew I was there to do one thing-RACE-be it with make up or without, and in all honesty,
no amount of makeup can match the empowerment that comes from knowing the amount of hard work that has
been invested and devoted to race hard.It was pouring down with rain,so perhaps it was a good thing in
disguise(),and I fortunately went on to have one of my best races of that year.Point proven-makeup
helps me feel increasingly energised and positive, but I don't always need it.

43.Why did the author race without makeup in the UK last year?
A.It was not allowed.
B.She left it somewhere.
C.She wanted a change.
D.It was pointless in the rain
44.What does the underlined word"it'in the last paragraph refer to?
A.The rain.
B.The makeup.
C.The race.
D.The empowerment.
45.What might be the best title for the text?
A.ABattle Won
B.Makeup or No Makeup
C.Lippy On,Smile On

Q
The baby monkey is much more developed at birth than the human baby.During the first few days of its
life the baby monkey will approach and hold onto almost any large, warm, and soft object in its environment,
particularly if that object also gives it milk. After a week or so,however, the baby monkey begins to avoid
newcomers and focuses its attentions on“n other”一the real mother or the mother-substitute(替代物),
During the first two weeks, warmth is perhaps the most important psychological (thing that a
monkey mother has to give to its baby. The Harlows,a couple who are both psychologists, discovered this fact
by offering baby monkeys a choice of two types of mother-substitutes-one covered with cloth and one made
of bare wire.If the two atificial mothers were both the same temperature, the little monkeys always preferred
the cloth mother. Why is cloth preferable to bare wire?Something that the Harlows called contact comfort
seems to be the answer.Baby monkeys spend much of their time rubbing against their mothers'skins.Wire
doesn't‘iub'as well as soft cloth does..Prolonged(长时间的)“contact comfort'”with a cloth mother appears to
give the babies confidence and is much more rewarding to them than either warmth or milk.
According to the Harlows, the basic quality of a baby's love for its mother is trust. If the baby is put into an
unfamiliar playroom without its mother, the baby ignores the toys no matter how interesting they might be.If its
cloth mother is now introduced into the playroom, the baby rushes to it and holds onto it for dear life. After a
few minutes of contact comfort,it obviously begins to feel more secure.Bit by bit its fears of the new
environment are gone and it spends more and more time playing with the toys and less and less time holding on
to its“n other.
46.Psychologically,what does the baby monkey desire most during the first two weeks of its life?
A.Warmth
B.Milk
C.Contact
D.Trust
47.After the first two weeks of their life, baby monkeys prefer the cloth mother to the wire mother because the
former is
A.larger in size
B.closer to them
C.less frightening and less disturbing
D.more comfortable to rub against
48.What does the baby monkey probably gain from prolonged"contact comfort"?
A.Attention
B.Softness
C.Confidence
D.Interest
49.It can be inferred that when the baby monkey feels secure,
A.it frequently rushes back for a deep embrace when exploring the toys
B.it spends more time screaming to get rewards
C.it is less attracted to the toys though they are interesting
D.it cares less about whether its mother is still around
50.The main purpose of the passage is to
A.give the reasons of the experiment
B.present the findings of the experiment
C.introduce the method of the experiment

My mother made me what I am.She gave me the greatest gift a mother can give-the desire to excel
)She taught me to read before I was four. She also encouraged me to write. When I was 10,I wrote a story
and she sent it to a children's magazine. They accepted it and paid me some money. So I started eaming money
by writing at a young age.
I also leamned a lot from my father. He'd say,"Stand tall,be confident and keep your eyes open."For what,
I don't know!He was quite good at telling stories, and I think I inherited my gift for storytelling from him.But
he could be pretty strict. If I went out with a boy,he had to pick me up from home so my father could question
him inside out
My father was 6 feet tall and good-looking,with great charm. He lost a leg in the war while serving in the
Royal Navy, but never let it hold him back. When he was in hospital, ready to have his leg amputated,he said,
not depressed,"Well, half a loaf is better than none."After his death,I returned his artificial leg to the hospital,
but walked away in tears. It felt as ifI was giving part ofhim away.
My parents had a son,Vivian, who died before I was born,so my mother put all her love into me.She also
gave me an education I couldn't get at school. She took me to the pictures every week,to the theatre to see the
Russian ballet whenever it came to Leeds, where we lived.
At 20,I moved to London to become a fashion editor of Womans Own and later a columnist on the London

"What we wanted to do was find out whether deaf children can sing, and how well they can pick up pitch

what has been lovely has been seeing how all of the pupils, from being quite shy and quiet at the start of the

Whittaker.
To date, there has been little research done into the connection between deafness, singing and signing. Now,

Boomerang()children who return to live with their parents after university can be good for families,
leading to closer, more supportive relationships and increased contact between the generations,a study has found.
The findings contradict research published earlier this year showing that returning adult children trigger a
significant decline in their parents'quality of life and well-being.
The young adults taking part in the study were "more positive than might have been expected about
moving back home-the shame is reduced as so many of their peers are in the same position, and they
acknowledged the benefits of parents'financial and emotional support.Daughters were happier than sons, often
slipping back easily into teenage patterns of behaviour, the study found.
Parents on the whole were more uncertain, expressing concern about the likely duration of the arrangement
and how to manage it.But they acknowledged that things were different for graduates today, who leave university
with huge debts and fewer job opportunities.
The families featured in the study were middle-class and tended to view the achievement of adult
independence for their children as a "family project".Parents accepted that their children required supports as
university students and then as graduates returning home,as they tried to find jobs paying enough to enable them
to move out and get on the housing ladder
"However,"the study says,"day-to-day tensions about the prospects of achieving different dimensions of
independence, which in a few extreme cases came close to conflict, characterised the experience of a majority of
parents and a little over half the graduates."
Areas of disagreement included chores, money and social life. While parents were keen to help, they also
wanted different relationships from those they had with their own parents, and continuing to support their adult
children allowed them to remain close.
46.What is the finding of the previous research?
A.The parents'quality of life became worse than before.
B.Boomerang children made their parents even happier than before.
试卷第14页,共23页
C.Boomerang children never did any housework.
D.The parents were looking forward to their children's return.
47.The underlined word"trigger"in Paragraph 2 may be best replaced by
A.benefit
B.defeat
C.cause
D.allow
48.What is the attitude of the college graduates towards returning home?
A.They are ashamed of turning to their parents for help.
B.They are proud to be independent from the family.
C.They are doubtful about whether they should return.
D.They are glad that they could come back.
49.What can be inferred as the reason for the"boomerang children phenomenon?
A.It is harder for the children to secure a satisfying job.

shelter,a forest caught fire during this hot summer. We are on July,a heat wave which has been going on for three
days.
Luke rushed towards the forest where flames send out a fierce heat. There's no longer any hope at the
moment to wait for Luke to come back to the shelter. In fact,I was waiting for the fire brigade()to
announce me his death in the forest.Suddenly,a fireman burst into my office and informed me that my dog Luke
succeeded to save four kittens who were trapped by the flames.According to the fireman,Luke seized the kittens,
one by one moving them to a safe place.
I immediately accompanied the fireman to the forest to pick up the rescued kittens.Once on the scene of
the incident,Luke was not there. Then we heard the sound of a dog came from the forest barking.I recognized the
sound of my dog Luke. The firemen followed the tracks of the dog until they found him barking loudly by the side
of an injured fireman who was lying on the ground and desperately waiting for rescue.
Thanks to Luke, four kittens and a fireman were saved. That day,I was very proud of Luke for his two
heroic actions.Luke showed much compassion for both animals like him and for a human being who was trying
to put out the fire with his colleagues.Truth to tell,my happiness is great and immeasurable.
I paid a visit to the fireman in his house accompanied with my lovely Luke. What a memorable scene when
the fireman hugged Luke tightly to his chest!"One thousand thanks,Luke, for saving my life,"the fireman said.
