Snowboarder Mike Schultz competed in his third and final Games at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympics. He leaves behind a legacy defined not only by his medals but by the prosthetics (义肢) he designed.
Schultz grew up in Minnesota and was enthusiastic about sports from a young age, starting with snowmobile racing. In 2008, he was injured in a snowmobile crash and had his left leg cut off above the knee. After his recovery, he explored adaptive sports and was drawn to snowboarding.
As he trained and competed, Schultz found that most prosthetics did not meet the demands of high‑impact sports. Combining his background in action sports with his passion for creating things, he founded BioDapt, his own company, where he developed the Moto Knee and other prosthetics and obtained patents granted by the authority. These devices were able to absorb the amount of impact needed to be an action sport athlete. Since then, he has made the Moto Knee available to active amputees (截肢患者) across North America, and now more than 100 wounded soldiers and disabled extreme athletes are using the prosthetics.
Taking up snowboarding after the accident, Schultz became the first to win a gold medal at the summer and winter X Games. At the 2026 Games, Schultz earned bronze in the men’s banked slalom, which, as he said, was a “perfect run” to conclude his 12‑year Paralympic career.
Now retired, Schultz plans to focus on developing new technology with BioDapt. He encourages young athletes to grow from both successes and barriers. “Sport is a great way to learn what you’re capable of — both mentally and physically,” Schultz said.
