Household Chemical Drop-off: Before You Leave Home
WHAT THE SERVICE ACCEPTS | This free Saturday drop-off is for waste produced at a private home. Book one 20-minute arrival slot for each vehicle. Accepted items include leftover paint, solvents, household cleaners, pesticides, motor oil and small household batteries. Waste from a business, school or farm is not accepted. Medicines, explosives and asbestos must be taken through other services.
KEEP CONTENTS IDENTIFIABLE | Leave each product in its original container with the label attached. Never combine leftovers, even when two labels look similar: mixed products may react and can no longer be recycled. If a container leaks, keep it upright inside a separate rigid box and call the centre before travelling; do not pour it into a drink bottle.
PACK FOR THE JOURNEY | Tighten lids and place containers so that they cannot tip. Carry them in the boot of the vehicle, away from passengers, pets and food. Empty containers may still hold harmful residue, so treat them with the same care. Bring your booking number and arrive no more than ten minutes before your slot.
AT THE SITE | Join the signed vehicle queue and remain inside. Staff will check the booking, ask what each container holds and unload the boxes. If an item cannot be identified or safely accepted, it stays with the owner, who will be given advice on the correct local service.
21. Why should products remain in their labelled containers?
A. To show how much each product originally cost.
B. To help staff identify contents and prevent unsafe mixing.
C. To prove that every container is completely full.
D. To identify the shop from which each item was bought.
22. Which item can be taken to this drop-off?
A. Two cans of paint left by a school workshop.
B. Drain cleaner transferred into a soft-drink bottle.
C. Household motor oil kept in its original labelled container.
D. Old medicine packed in the same box as pesticides.
23. Which resident follows all the instructions?
A. Leo mixes two half-used cleaners and seals the jar.
B. Mina leaves her car to carry pesticide to the staff.
C. Omar brings an unlabelled leaking jar twenty minutes early.
D. Rosa books, secures labelled cans in her car and waits.
B
At 5:20, before the first passenger flight, wildlife officer Ana Perez drives the perimeter road of Westford Airport. She is not simply counting birds. A pair of gulls feeding beyond the fence poses a different problem from a flock crossing the approach path, so she records species, number, location and direction of movement before choosing a response. Standard map sectors let the next patrol compare what has changed.
If birds move towards an active runway, Perez calls the control tower and waits for permission to enter the protected area. She may use the vehicle, a sound signal or a canine patrol, depending on the species and the airport plan. The aim is to disperse the flock—not to chase it blindly from one runway towards another. Every action has to fit between aircraft movements.
A cleared runway is only the first part of the job. After an incident, Perez logs where birds landed and what may have attracted them. When gulls returned repeatedly to one corner after rain, the records pointed to water collecting beside a blocked drain. Clearing the drain reduced the attraction more effectively than sending a vehicle out each morning.
Longer-term work involves grass height, waste storage and standing water. Changes are made with engineers and grounds teams, because removing one feeding place can shift birds elsewhere. The airport cannot become a space without wildlife; Perez's target is the particular movement that puts animals and aircraft in the same place at the same time.
Soon after sunrise, plovers settle near a taxiway. Perez reports their position, waits for clearance and approaches from the side that leaves them an open route away from the runway. The flock lifts and crosses the outer fence. She notes the direction, checks the pavement once more and tells the tower that the route is clear.
24. Why does Perez identify the birds before acting?
A. To estimate how long every flight will be delayed.
B. To decide which passengers may enter the airport.
C. To demonstrate that all birds create the same danger.
D. To choose a response suited to the birds' movement.
25. What did the repeated reports of gulls help the airport discover?
A. The birds arrived only when no aircraft were moving.
B. A local drainage problem was attracting them.
C. Sound signals were more effective than every other method.
D. The perimeter fence had been built in the wrong place.
26. What does the underlined word “disperse” in paragraph 2 most nearly mean?
A. Scatter. B. Count. C. Protect. D. Follow.
27. What can be inferred about Perez's work?
A. It can be done without contacting the control tower.
B. It is successful only when no wildlife remains nearby.
C. It combines immediate airfield decisions with longer-term planning.
D. It depends mainly on trained dogs to clear the runways.
C
Research ships can collect detailed ocean measurements, but each voyage is costly and covers only a limited area. An underwater glider takes a different approach. It travels slowly for weeks, repeating dives along a planned route while carrying sensors for temperature, salt and other properties. Researchers can redirect it from shore without first recovering it.
The glider has no propeller driving it forward. A pump changes its buoyancy by moving oil into or out of an external bladder. When the vehicle becomes slightly heavier than the surrounding water, its nose points down; when it becomes lighter, the nose points up. Wings turn part of that vertical movement into forward motion, producing a long saw-toothed path through the sea.
Underwater, satellite navigation signals do not reach the vehicle. The glider therefore estimates its position from direction, speed and depth. At intervals it surfaces, obtains a GPS position and corrects that estimate. It can also send a small set of data to researchers and receive a new destination before diving again.
Low energy use gives the glider time, but not unlimited power. It cannot carry every instrument used on a ship, and a strong current may push it away from the straight line drawn on a map. That drift is not always a failure. By comparing the intended route with the actual track, researchers can learn something about the moving water itself.
Gliders are especially useful when scientists need repeated profiles across a front or a remote stretch of ocean. They do not replace ships, which can collect larger samples and repair equipment. Their value lies in staying out for months between ship visits and returning a continuous record.
28. How does the glider produce forward movement?
A. A satellite pulls it forward between chosen surface points.
B. Its wings turn buoyancy-driven rises and dives into forward travel.
C. Ocean currents spin a propeller mounted behind its wings.
D. The oil bladder sends a jet of water behind the vehicle.
29. Why does the glider periodically return to the surface?
A. To collect the large samples stored on a research ship.
B. To let its wings recover from the pressure of a dive.
C. To correct its position and exchange information with researchers.
D. To wait until every current below it has stopped moving.
30. What may researchers learn when a glider drifts from its intended route?
A. How currents changed its actual track.
B. Why GPS works only above water.
C. Which ship should recover it.
D. How much oil it carries.
31. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To argue that research ships are no longer needed.
B. To compare different ways of producing satellite signals.
C. To warn that ocean currents make automatic instruments unreliable.
D. To explain an underwater glider's operation, uses and limits.
D
For years, Glenford cut nearly every roadside verge to the same short height from spring to autumn. Last year the town changed eighteen stretches to a selective plan. The first metre beside roads, paths and junctions was still cut regularly, while grass farther back was allowed to grow until late summer.
The short edge was not decorative. It kept sight lines open, prevented plants from narrowing paths and gave drivers a clear boundary. Beyond it, fewer cuts allowed spring flowers to bloom and set seed. Because the two zones remained visible, residents could also see that the taller grass was part of a plan rather than a forgotten task.
After the late-summer cut, contractors collected the clippings instead of leaving them across the soil. Removing that material gradually lowers the supply of nutrients on which vigorous grasses thrive. It may take several seasons, but less fertile soil gives smaller wildflowers more room to compete. A thick layer of clippings would do the opposite by covering low plants.
The trial was monitored from fixed photograph points, with records of flowers, insects, blocked views and public complaints. One shaded verge showed little improvement and was returned to the earlier schedule. At two open sites, the town widened the taller zone but kept the cut strip beside the road. Small signs explained when the next cut would occur.
These results do not support a rule of 'mow nothing'. Safety, access, soil and existing plants differ from place to place. They do show that mowing can be treated as a timed management tool rather than a single standard imposed everywhere. Glenford's strongest decision was not simply to cut less, but to test where each kind of cutting belonged.
32. Why was the first metre of each verge cut regularly?
A. To provide fresh soil for the taller inner zone.
B. To make every verge look exactly alike.
C. To keep roads and paths visible and open.
D. To prevent contractors from collecting the clippings.
33. What is the purpose of removing the late-summer clippings?
A. To reduce the advantage of strong grasses over time.
B. To keep wildflower seeds from reaching the soil.
C. To make the soil richer before the next spring.
D. To cover the smaller plants during cold weather.
34. What can be inferred about Glenford's mowing plan?
A. It will use the same schedule on all eighteen sites.
B. It is adjusted according to evidence from individual places.
C. It measures success only through public complaints.
D. It will eventually remove every short roadside strip.
35. What is the author's attitude towards the selective plan?
A. Doubtful. B. Indifferent. C. Critical. D. Favourable.
At a clinic, a bakery or an airport desk, people do not judge a queue only by the number of minutes they wait. Two lines of equal length can feel very different. ____36____ When people can see who is next and why, they are less likely to think someone has been favoured.
____37____ When several counters provide the same service, a single line feeding them all usually makes the order easy to follow. It also prevents a long request at one desk from trapping everyone who happened to choose that line. But this arrangement is not always possible. ____38____ A supermarket, for example, may have a separate checkout for customers carrying only a few items.
Exceptions do not automatically make a system unfair. A person with an appointment, a passenger whose gate is closing or someone needing emergency care may be served earlier. Frustration rises when the reason is invisible. A small sign or a brief explanation can show that a different rule is being applied, not that the main line has been ignored.
Information about progress matters too. Number screens, estimated waiting times and visible stages give people a sense of movement. ____39____ If a delay is known to last twenty minutes, someone can choose to sit, make a call or return later.
No queue design removes every delay. ____40____ A good system makes the order understandable, explains necessary exceptions and lets people decide what to do while they wait.
A. First consider a place where several counters perform the same task.
B. The rules used to organise the wait matter as well.
C. The aim is not perfect speed but a process people can understand.
D. Different tasks may require different routes through the same space.
E. Uncertainty is often harder to manage than a clearly stated delay.
F. The same rule should therefore be used for every customer, whatever the situation.
G. Once the order is visible, the actual length of the wait no longer matters.

Before sunrise on Thursday, I joined meteorologist Dana Ruiz for a ____41____ weather-balloon launch. The radiosonde, ____42____ below the balloon, would measure temperature, humidity and pressure as it climbed. Because stations in many places followed a fixed observation time, Dana worked ____43____ rather than rushing through the checks.

"We cannot ____46____ a release from here," she said. Yet we could not ____47____ for completely calm air; the observation clock was moving.
We carried the equipment towards the centre of the yard and tried again. The balloon ____48____ straight for two metres, then ____49____ back towards the building. Dana stopped. A windsock above the shed pointed east, while a strip of survey tape on the far fence streamed north. The two indicators clearly ____50____. The building was ____51____ the flow close to its roof.
Instead of choosing the calmest-looking corner, Dana walked to the ____52____ fence line. There the tape and windsock ____53____. She checked the battery, unwound the line and waited through one brief lull. When she released the balloon, I ____54____ out the instrument rather than throwing it upward. Balloon and box cleared the fence and climbed without touching it.
Inside, the first numbers appeared on the receiver. One humidity value jumped and then ____55____ as the sensor adjusted to the colder air. Dana logged the launch time and the change in surface wind. By then the balloon was only a white point. The next task was ordinary: clean the filling equipment and prepare the room for the afternoon launch.

Before sunrise, a tofu workshop on Tianzhuang Ancient Street is already warm. Pang Zhenghua begins by pouring soybeans, ____56____ (soak) overnight, into a stone mill. As the handle turns, a pale liquid runs into a container below. After the beans are ground, the mixture is filtered so that the bean solids can be removed before heating. The liquid is later heated in a large pot and stirred to prevent it ____57____ sticking.
The crucial moment comes when brine ____58____ (add). The liquid gradually separates into soft curds and clearer water. Rather than depending only on a clock, Pang judges the change ____59____ watching how the curds gather and adjusts the amount of brine if necessary. The curds are then transferred to cloth-lined moulds, ____60____ extra water is pressed out and the tofu takes shape.
Although machines can shorten several steps, this workshop still ____61____ (rely) on Pang's judgement. 67.
On the first Saturday of the school holiday, sixteen-year-old Maya helped her aunt Leena at an eight-room guesthouse. Leena showed her the booking cards and the key envelopes. Two parties named Patel were due that afternoon. To protect guests' privacy, only a surname and booking number appeared on the outside of each card; any personal requests were folded inside.
One Patel party had reserved Room 2 on the ground floor because a guest was recovering from an ankle operation. The other had chosen quiet Room 7 upstairs at the back of the house. Leena went to help a driver with a delivery just as a taxi stopped outside. A tired-looking couple entered, gave the surname Patel and set two suitcases beside the desk. Eager to keep check-in moving, Maya picked up the first Patel envelope and handed them the key to Room 7 without asking for a first name or booking number.
As the man lifted a suitcase, his wife unfolded a walking stick. She looked towards the stairs. "I thought we had a ground-floor room," she said. Maya opened the other booking card and saw the request for Room 2. At that moment a second car arrived, and a young woman with a laptop case came through the door saying that she also had a Patel booking.
Neither party had entered a room, so the mistake could still be corrected. Maya also knew that reading the folded medical note aloud in the lobby would expose information that the first couple had given privately. She apologised, asked everyone to wait in the seating area and placed both keys back on the desk. Leena was still outside, and two more guests had begun to form a line behind them.
The two cards looked almost identical when closed. Maya needed to identify the correct booking, move the luggage without delaying everyone for long and change the check-in method before the same error happened again.
Maya placed both keys on the desk and asked the waiting guests for a moment.
By evening, both Patel parties had settled into the rooms they had expected.

But this arrangement is not always possible要求说明单队列的边界。
解析:观测时刻临近,他们不能一直等到完全无风,wait与for搭配且承接the clock was moving。
解析:that代替前面出现的the texture,构成the texture of one batch与that of another的比较,避免重复名词。
63. 标准答案:to be cut
解析:be ready to do表示“准备好做”;tofu与cut、sell为被动关系,填to be cut,与后面的sold并列。
解析:skill与develop构成被动关系,developed through years of daily work作后置定语,说明技艺形成的过程。
Dear Ms Green,
I tried the new lunch service last Tuesday. Ordering online saved time, and I collected my meal quickly, so I could eat without rushing.
However, the collection area became crowded at noon. Meals for different grades were placed on the same table, and some labels were too small to read. One student took the wrong bag, while another could not find her order. The staff had to stop serving and check the receipts again, which made the queue longer and left several students with little time for lunch.
I suggest separate collection areas for each grade, larger labels showing names and order numbers, and clear queue signs. At busy times, a staff member could also check each order before handing it over.
Yours,
Li Hua

Maya placed both keys on the desk and asked the waiting guests for a moment. She invited each party, one at a time, to show the booking number on its confirmation message. The older couple's number matched Room 2; the young woman's matched Room 7. Without mentioning the ankle request, Maya corrected the envelopes and asked a porter to carry the couple's suitcases along the ground-floor passage. She then checked in the other guests by first name and number, not surname alone.
By evening, both Patel parties had settled into the rooms they had expected. Maya told Leena exactly how the mix-up had happened. Together they redesigned the cards: the guest's first-name initial and final four booking digits stayed visible, while private requests remained folded inside. They also placed a small CHECK NAME + NUMBER card beside the key tray. When Maya prepared the next arrival, she paused over the envelope, read back the two identifiers and handed over the key only after the guest confirmed them.
