Around the World was Eddie’s favorite classroom game. He loved racing against a classmate to solve a math problem. Eddie won and lost. But his friend Michael never lost. He was the champion (冠军) of Around the World. Every week he would go around the classroom winning against everyone.
“Are we all ready?” Mrs. Stretch asked. Everyone nodded.
“Then let’s begin,” said Mrs. Stretch. “Talia, you start.”
Talia was new to the class. This would be her first time playing. She jumped up and went over to Eddie’s desk. Eddie stood up, too.
“Twelve times two,” said Mrs. Stretch.

Eddie sat down, disappointed but still happy to know the right answer.
Talia moved on to challenge the next classmate. She seemed unstoppable. Finally, Talia got to Michael.

“You think they cheered against you?” Eddie asked.
“ ▲ ” Michael said.
“I think they cheered because they were too surprised,” Eddie said. “You’re the champ. Talia had to do her best to beat you. So, people were excited about it.”
“She is really good at math,” Michael agreed.
“And so are you,” said Eddie. “You help us all work harder. Because of you, we probably have the best math class in the whole school.”
“Thanks,” Michael said. He smiled at Eddie, “Do you want to sit together at lunch?”

How did nearsighted people manage in the pre-glasses past? Aristotle may have written the first research results of myopia (近视) around 350 BC. Because their eyeballs are too long, people with this condition can see
objects that are close by, but distant objects look blurry.
Neil Handlry, a museum curator, said not much is known about how people dealt with myopia before the first lenses for nearsighted people were invented in the 15th century in Europe. And he noted that “even in the history of the invention of glasses, that is a late development.”
There are 13th-century European examples of handheld convex lenses (凸 透 镜 ) that were used to treat age-related vision loss known as presbyopia (We’d call them reading glasses today). But the technology wasn’t used to treat nearsightedness for another 200 years.
“Because of the way that lens is held, you can see through it, and the artist has caught the effect that the glass has,” Handley said. Myopia could be something of a modern condition. The number of nearsighted people has risen quickly in recent years, and researchers have predicted that half the world will be myopic by 2050. One study by the College of Optometrists found that myopia is more than twice as common among kids in the U.K. now than it was the 1960s.
Doctors are still trying to find out the cause behind this trend. Some have blamed (归咎于) genetic causes or an increase in studying and screen time.
It’s likely that myopia didn’t influence as many people in the past as it does now. Handley said the late creation of nearsighted glasses suggests that treating the small number of people with myopia wasn’t considered as a most important thing and that people could deal with myopia by making some changes in their lifestyle. Or, maybe there was more of an emphasis (强调) on putting people in jobs that were suited to their ability to see, he said.
For example, people with myopia were historically valued in artisan contexts, such as medieval European monasteries, where illuminating manuscripts (手稿) and painting required making tiny, exact brushstrokes. “The myopic person, far from being given some correction, was actually encouraged to remain in their myopic condition, because it was actually ideal for them doing this job. They don’t necessarily consider it as disability,” Handley said.
30.What does the underlined word “blurry” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Dark. B.Warm. C.Unclear. D.Uncomfortable.
31.The passage is developed by ________.
A.providing facts B.presenting causes C.comparing opinions D.making up stories
32.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A.People in the past didn’t develop myopia.
B.People with myopia could also lead a normal life.
C.Myopia could be cured by changing people’s lifestyle.
D.Most jobs about art preferred nearsighted people than others.
33.What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.Many causes lead to modern myopia.
B.Myopia was not so troublesome in the past.
C.Nearsightedness is increasing at an amazing speed.
D.Glasses for nearsighted people have developed a lot.
【答案】30.C 31.A 32.B 33.B

33.主旨大意题。根据文章第一段中“How did nearsighted people manage in the pre-glasses past?”可知,文章
提出了在眼镜发明之前,人们怎么应付近视带来的问题,再根据文章最后两段内容可知,过去近视情况并

要是告诉我们近视在过去对人们影响不大。故选 B。
D
All around the world, buildings are going green! People are making green buildings. What does it mean to go green or to make a green building? A green building is designed (设 计 ) in a way that is not harmful to the environment. The building uses energy, water, and other materials in ways that are good for the environment.
When planning green buildings, architects (建 筑 师 ) must think about how to use energy, water, and materials in an environment-friendly way. There are many ways to save energy. Architects can design buildings to use natural light. Buildings can also be made with solar or wind power to get energy from the sun or the wind. To save water, green buildings can have areas on the roofs to collect rainwater. Kitchens and bathrooms can have sinks (洗池) and toilets (马桶) that conserve water. As for the materials used to build the building, it is important to use materials that do not have chemicals that are harmful to the air or water. Recycled materials can also be used for buildings.
Buildings around the world use all three of these ways to go green. An office building called CH2 in Melbourne, Australia, uses wind and solar power. A cultural center in London, England, is made from recycled train cars and is powered by solar and wind power. The Academy of Sciences building in California in the US has recycled materials, solar energy, and a huge “living roof” of plants. A temple in Thailand is made out of one million recycled glass bottles! This is a good use of recycled material, and it also lets natural light into the temple.
More and more green buildings are being built and they are making the world a better place!
34.What do we know about a green building?
A.It is usually painted green outside. B.It uses more materials than other buildings.
C.It is designed by famous architects. D.It is built in an environment-friendly way.
35.How does the writer support the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A.By asking questions. B.By giving examples.
C.By listing numbers. D.By explaining reasons.
36.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Designing Buildings B.Going Green
C.Recycling Materials D.Using Energy

For many teenagers, it’s hard to run away from the pressure to be perfect. They push themselves to get straight A’s, star on the sports field, present a perfect social media look, and even be the “best” friend or family member. ____37____ What they don’t always realize, however, is the bad effects this habit has on their mental health.
Perfectionism is not the same as going for excellence. ____38____ Going for excellence means enjoying the process of growing and accepting small failures as part of learning. Perfectionism, on the other hand, is controlled by fear and self-doubt. It is an all-or-nothing mindset (心态) that tells them “If I am not the best, I am a loser.” This fixed way of thinking easily leads to high levels of stress and nervousness.
One of the most harmful results of perfectionism is putting things off. The fear of not being perfect often stops teenagers from starting a task at all. They would rather avoid trying than face possible imperfection, creating a harmful cycle of avoidance. Thoughts like “If I can’t write the perfect paper, I won’t even start” become common, causing late work and increasing pressure .
____39____ It slowly breaks their ability to overcome difficulties. When every small mistake is seen as a shame, it is difficult to build healthy self-confidence. A low grade or simple bad words can make them doubt their own value for a long time.
The good news is that teenagers can get out of the perfectionism trouble. Start by treating mistakes as necessary learning steps. ____40____ Instead of being hard on yourself for not being good enough, praise yourself for trying your best. Over time, you will feel lighter and more confident.
A.Everyone needs to learn from successful people .
B.Learn to accept “good” instead of always requiring “perfect” .
C.The key difference is how people look at progress and mistakes .
D.So why do parents push teenagers so hard in study and daily life ?
E.Perfectionism can also hurt their confidence when facing problems .
F.They are taught that perfect performances make them popular and respected .

阅读下面短文,回答短文后的问题。(前3题每题答案不超过10个词,第4题答案不限词数)。
Anna was a shy girl who found it hard to speak in front of others. In class, she would never raise her hand even when she knew the answer. Her heart would race whenever the teacher called her name. She would stammer and feel her face turn red. This made her feel embarrassed and she started to believe that she was not as clever as her classmates.
One day, Anna’s English teacher, Mrs. Lee, noticed her difficulty. After class, she asked Anna to stay behind. “Anna, I can see that you have a lot of great ideas in your writing. Why don’t you share them with the class?” Anna looked down and said softly, “I’m too nervous to speak in front of everyone. I’m afraid I’ll make mistakes.”
Mrs. Lee smiled kindly. “Making mistakes is part of learning,” she said. “Would you like to try a small step? How about you prepare a short speech for next week’s class? You can write it down first and practice at home. I believe you can do it.”
Anna hesitated but finally agreed. She went home and spent several days writing and practicing. She stood in front of her mirror and said her speech over and over again until she could remember every word. She even recorded herself and listened to find areas where she could improve.
On the day of the speech, Anna was still nervous. But when she saw Mrs. Lee’s encouraging smile, she took a deep breath and began. Her voice was quiet at first, but as she continued, she became more confident. When she finished, the whole class applauded. Anna felt a wave of pride wash over her.
From that day on, Anna began to speak more in class. She realized that the fear was only in her mind, and that she was stronger than she thought. She also learned that asking for help was not a sign of weakness, but of courage.

Dear Daniel,
I feel really unhappy recently.
First, there is too much homework. I hardly have time to do sports or relax. What’s worse, my parents keep talking about schoolwork and exams. I feel so tired that I don’t want to talk to them.
Also, I’m the monitor of my class. But when I organize class activities, my classmates don’t help much. I guess they may think I’m too serious. I want to be funny, but I’m not that kind of person!
What can I do? Can you help me?
Yours,
Mike

There were only 15 minutes until lunch. But everyone in Mrs. Stretch’s math class was waiting excitedly for the start of Around the World.
Stretch.
“Twenty-four!” Talia called out, a second before Eddie could.
Eddie sat down, disappointed but still happy to know the right answer.
Talia moved on to challenge the next classmate. She seemed unstoppable. Finally, Talia got to Michael.
“Eight times twelve,” Mrs. Stretch said.
“Ninety-six!” shouted Talia first.
The class sat shocked, then everyone cheered for Talia, today’s champion.
“Nice job, Talia,” said Mrs. Stretch. “It’s time for lunch, everyone. Now line up, please.”
Eddie stood to go to lunch. He noticed Michael had his head down on his desk, his face buried in his arms. Eddie walked to Michael and put his hand on his shoulder.
“It’s OK to lose,” Eddie said. “I lose Around the World all the time. You’re still great at multiplication.”
“That’s not why I’m upset,” Michael said into his arms. “No one likes me. They cheered when I lost.”

There were only 15 minutes until lunch. But everyone in Mrs. Stretch’s math class was waiting excitedly for the start of Around the World.
