As the day of the party arrived, Grant’s house was transformed into a festive wonderland. Colorful balloons floated near the ceiling, and a banner reading “Everyone’s Birthday!” hung across the doorway. Grant’s family set up activity stations: a craft corner for making party hats, a dance floor with disco lights, and even a “photo booth” with silly props. When the guests arrived, their faces lit up with wonder. Tommy ran to the craft table, clutching glitter glue, while Robert wheeled himself to the photo booth, donning oversized sunglasses. The usually reserved teens hesitantly joined the dance floor, soon laughing as Grant demonstrated his dance moves.
The party was a huge success. By the end of the night, every guest had a handmade party hat and a photo tucked into their pockets. As SNR staff helped pack up, one remarked, “This is the first time I’ve seen so many of them laugh together.” Grant’s father pulled him aside, saying, “You actually gave them a memory they’ll treasure.” Grant smiled with happiness, watching Tommy cling to his new hat like a crown. Later, as he blew out the candles, he whispered a wish: May everyone feel as loved as they made me feel today.

Do you want to make a good living from writing? Here is the good news. There are several platforms you can upload your writing to. Meanwhile, you can interact with other writers, build a community and make some money.
Medium: https://medium.com/
Medium was launched in 2012 by Edgar Smith. You can join Medium for free, but you can also become a subscriber (订阅用户) for $5 a month which allows you access to more contents and do more. Medium supports a diverse range of writing, including book-length pieces, poetry, essays, and multimedia presentations.
Simon Whaley joined the platform in 2021, firstly as a reader, and then paid the monthly fee. “This subscription model means there are no advertisements,” he says, “Within four months, my articles were covering my monthly subscription. Between 2022 and 2024, my articles often made over $200 per month.”
Substack: https://substack.com/
This platform gained popularity very quickly after it was founded in 2017, seen as a way for writers to build a personal brand.
Nick Winney has been using Substack for over a year and discovered many like-minded writers. It has also opened his eyes to a vast range of writing on the platform, as he explains, “You can find amazing fiction (小说), non-fiction and some very interesting, intelligent people across all types of writing.” He has written forty-seven posts in less than a year, which is the most writing he has ever done.
Wattpad: https://www.wattpad.com/
This platform is all about stories. It’s been around for a while since 2006 and its founders wanted readers to be able to download an app so they could read and chat about fiction shared by professional writers. It covers all sorts of writing, from romance, to fantasy, to historical.
Eliza-Mari Janse started using Wattpad in 2017 and it was the first place where she shared her work. “Wattpad is a wonderful place to be creative, unique and have complete freedom. Write professionally, just for fun or just try it out. You don’t have a deadline.”
1. Which of the following is TRUE about Medium?
A. There are no advertisements on the platform.

Bamboo farming is on the rise in Uganda. The strong and fast-growing crop is seen by the East African government as having real growth possibility. Along a 3-kilometer stretch of the river Rwizi, environment protection officers recently planted new bamboo seedlings (幼苗) and cleared room for last year’s survivors to grow.
The river Rwizi is the most important river in western Uganda that includes the major city of Mbarara. A successful bamboo forest would protect the river against sand miners, farmers and others whose activities have long threatened it. “Once bamboo is established, it is almost like a net,” said Jeconious Musingwire. He is an environment officer, who is the project’s technical advisor. “The roots trap everything, including the surface runoff, and stabilize the weaknesses of the banks.”
The Ugandan government has set a 10-year policy that calls for planting 300,000 hectares of bamboo. Most of it will be planted on private land by 2029 as part of wider reforestation efforts.
A single bamboo pole brings in a little less than a dollar, so farmers need to grow a lot to earn enough. Bamboo promoters are urging them to see a bamboo plantation as the same kind of money-making crop as coffee or tea. Banks are offering bamboo “plantation capital” to clients, loans that allow them to plant large forests of bamboo. Bamboo plants are normally ready for harvesting in three to five years. A well-maintained plantation can be useful for at least 50 years, said Jacob, a crop production expert working with the large Kitara Farm. He said bamboo is easy to manage, and usually does not need spraying with pesticide (杀虫剂).
Steve Tusiime owns a bamboo nursery. It has sold fewer than 10,000 seedlings in the past two years. But, Tusiime said, “Bamboo is going to be a game changer in Africa. You can eat bamboo, you can use it to build, create a bamboo industry, you can feed it to your animals, and it can take care of your land.”
4. What is the importance of planting bamboo according to Jeconious Musingwire?
A. It helps improve the soil for crops. B. It is beneficial to the environment.
C. It can be profitable for about 50 years. D. It is useful to develop the local economy.
5. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. People in Uganda are showing interest in growing bamboo.
B. Steve Tusiime makes much money with the bamboo nursery in growing bamboo.
C. Bamboo industry will help people in Uganda make more money.
D. Bamboo is helpful to reduce poverty and hunger in Africa.
6. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Bamboo forests can improve the environment B. Farmers can earn money by planting bamboo
C. Uganda makes a 10-year plan on development D. Uganda makes great effort to plant bamboo
7. What is the author’s attitude towards the development of bamboo farming in Uganda?
A. Doubtful. B. Neutral. C. Optimistic. D. Critical.
根据第二段中“A successful bamboo forest would protect the river against sand miners, farmers and others whose activities have long threatened it. “Once bamboo is established, it is almost like a net,” said Jeconious Musingwire. He is an environment officer, who is the project’s technical advisor. “The roots trap everything, including the surface runoff, and stabilize the weaknesses of the banks.”(一片成功的竹林将保护河流免受采砂工、农民和其他人的破坏,这些人的活动长期以来对河流造成威胁。“一旦竹子被种植,它几乎就像一张网,”Jeconious Musingwire说。他是一名环境官员,也是该项目的技术顾问。“树根困住了一切,包括地表径流,还能稳固堤岸疏松的部分。”)”可知,Jeconious Musingwire认为竹子种植的重要性体现在对生态环境的保护作用。
5.推理判断题。根据最后一段Steve Tusiime的话“Bamboo is going to be a game changer in Africa. You can eat bamboo, you can use it to build, create a bamboo industry, you can feed it to your animals, and it can take care of your land.(竹子将改变非洲的格局。你可以食用竹子,可以用竹子建房,可以打造竹子产业,还可以用它喂牲畜,同时它还能养护你的土地。)”可知,竹子产业用途广泛,能够带动乌干达发展,帮助当地人获得更多收入。
6.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段第一句“Bamboo farming is on the rise in Uganda.(乌干达的竹子种植正在兴起。)”

Researchers at the University of Missouri are developing a new way to remove microplastics (微塑料) from water using specially engineered algae (藻类). Their goal is not only to clean waterways but also to recycle the collected plastic into safer bioplastic materials.
“Microplastics are pollutants found almost everywhere in the environment, such as in rivers, wastewater and the fish that we consume,” said Dai, a professor in the College of Engineering and principal investigator at the Bond Life Sciences Center. “Currently, most wastewater treatment plants can only remove large pieces of plastic, but microplastics are so small that they slip through and end up in drinking water, polluting the environment and harming ecosystems.”
In a recent study, Dai used genetic engineering to develop algae that produce limonene, a natural oil responsible for the familiar smell of oranges. The limonene changes the algae’s surface features, making it resist water. Since microplastics are also water resistant, the microplastic bits naturally stick to the algae when they meet in water. The process forms a thick biological layer that sinks to the bottom and can be collected and removed more easily. The algae also grow in wastewater, where they help clean the water during the process.
“By removing the microplastics, cleaning the wastewater and eventually using the removed microplastics to create bioplastic products for good, we can address three issues with one approach,” Dai said. “While our research is still in the early stages, our eventual goal is to apply this new process to existing wastewater treatment plants, so cities can clean their water more effectively and reduce pollution at the same time.”
Dai’s lab already grows algae inside large tank bioreactors (生物反应器). One system, a 100-liter bioreactor nicknamed “Shrek”, is currently used to process industrial waste gas to reduce air pollution. Looking ahead, Dai hopes to create larger versions of the Shrek system that could eventually be adapted for wastewater treatment and the removal of other pollutants.
8. What problem do most wastewater treatment plants have now?
A. Microplastics end up in the plants. B. Microplastics escape during treatment.
C. Large pieces of plastic slip through. D. Large pieces of plastic are unprocessed.
9. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Why limonene resists water. B. How the algae remove microplastics.
C. Why microplastics stick together. D. How limonene changes algae’s surface.
10. Which of the following might the new approach help do?
A. Absorb bioplastic from algae. B. Clean drinking water at home.
C. Make bioplastic shopping bags. D. Remove plastics from beaches.
11. What can be learned about the bioreactor “Shrek”?
A. It is too small to handle waste gas. B. It’s developed into a larger version.
C. It currently removes microplastics. D. It has yet to deal with wastewater.
根据第二段“Currently, most wastewater treatment plants can only remove large pieces of plastic, but microplastics are so small that they slip through and end up in drinking water, polluting the environment and harming ecosystems.(目前,大多数污水处理厂只能去除大块塑料,但微塑料体积太小,会渗漏出去,最终进入饮用水,污染环境并破坏生态系统)”可知,当前污水处理厂无法拦截体积微小的微塑料,微塑料会在处理过程中渗漏出去。
根据第三段内容“In a recent study, Dai used genetic engineering to develop algae that produce limonene, a natural oil responsible for the familiar smell of oranges. The limonene changes the algae’s surface features, making it resist water. Since microplastics are also water resistant, the microplastic bits naturally stick to the algae when they meet in water. The process forms a thick biological layer that sinks to the bottom and can be collected and removed more easily. The algae also grow in wastewater, where they help clean the water during the process.(在最近的一项研究中,Dai利用基因工程开发了产生柠檬烯的藻类,柠檬烯是产生橙子常见气味的一种天然油。
根据第一段“Their goal is not only to clean waterways but also to recycle the collected plastic into safer bioplastic materials.(他们的目标不仅是清理水道,还要将收集到的塑料回收加工成更安全的生物塑料材料)”以及第四段“By removing the microplastics, cleaning the wastewater and eventually using the removed microplastics to create bioplastic products for good, we can address three issues with one approach(通过一劳永逸地去除微塑料、净化污水,最终将去除的微塑料用来生产生物塑料产品,我们可以用一种方法解决三个问题)”可知,这项新技术会将收集的微塑料加工为生物塑料产品,制作生物塑料购物袋符合这一应用方向。
根据最后一段“One system, a 100-liter bioreactor nicknamed “Shrek”, is currently used to process industrial waste gas to reduce air pollution. Looking ahead, Dai hopes to create larger versions of the Shrek system that could eventually be adapted for wastewater treatment and the removal of other pollutants.(一个容积100升、昵称“史莱克”的生物反应器系统目前被用于处理工业废气以减少空气污染。展望未来,Dai希望打造更大版本的史莱克系统,最终使其能够适配污水处理和去除其他污染物的工作)”可知,当前史莱克仅用于处理废气,还尚未承担污水处理工作。

With advances in robotics and artificial intelligence continuing to surprise us, there probably is not a single industry being left untouched by these technologies. Though some believe that robots are dangerous for our society and could gradually make humans obsolete, the reality is far less dramatic. Today, tech companies are developing smart robots suitable for a variety of services. One such innovation comes from the French robot developer, Hease Robotics.
The company’s robotic solution, called Heasy, can be used in shopping centres, train stations, or airports. This autonomous robot is designed to greet, inform and guide customers. Thanks to its smart AI algorithms (算法), the robot will navigate (穿行) safely through crowded environments without bumping into people or objects. The machine is battery-operated and can run for eight hours on a single charge. 85% of people who interacted with Heasy said they were satisfied with the service provided by the robot.
The age of human-robot coexistence has come, and this doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. There are many ways we can turn this to our advantage. Take home robots, for example. The U.S. robotics firm Anki has created a robot called Vector to add fun to our daily routines. Vector is a small, autonomous companion equipped with a camera and machine learning tech. The robot won’t sweep your floors or take out the garbage. It will, however, serve as an adorable (讨人喜爱的) addition to your household.
If you’ve always wanted to have a pet, but weren’t allowed to own any, then Vector might be the right solution. When you call the robot, Vector will activate and turn to you, carefully listening for commands. You can simply ask for a weather forecast and the robot will respond in a second. And in case you forget to charge it, the robot will go to its charging dock by itself.
Both AI and robotics have come a long way. Robots are becoming smarter, and while people still have mixed feelings about this technology, the truth is that we can’t go back. Instead of fearing these innovations, we should accept them — after all, there isn’t much we can do to prevent the ongoing advancement of technology.
12. What does the underlined word “obsolete” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Outdated. B. Comfortable. C. Ashamed. D. Knowledgeable.
13. What do we know about Heasy?
A. It can charge up all by itself. B. It works eight hours every day.
C. It is popular with shopping assistants. D. It can work in a crowded environment.
14. What is Vector mainly used for?
A. Cleaning houses. B. Teaching children.
C. Looking after pets. D. Entertaining people.
15. How does the author look at the development of AI and robotics?
A. Critically. B. Cautiously. C. Objectively. D. Doubtfully.
【答案】12.A 13.D 14.D 15.C
根据第一段“With advances in robotics and artificial intelligence continuing to surprise us, there probably is not a single industry being left untouched by these technologies. Instead of fearing these innovations, we should accept them — after all, there isn’t much we can do to prevent the ongoing advancement of technology.(人工智能和机器人技术都已经取得了长足发展,机器人也变得越来越智能,尽管人们对这项技术看法不一,但现实是我们已经没有回头路可走。我们不必惧怕创新,应当接纳它们,技术发展的趋势无法阻挡。)”可知,作者既提到大众对机器人技术的不同看法,又理性阐述技术发展不可逆、应主动接纳,态度客观中立。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Body Language in the Virtual World
As social beings, we naturally interpret body language as an expression of mood or intention in real life.____16____Here are four body language considerations that will result in your bigger digital impact in video calls.
Make a positive and lasting impression. The way you hold yourself affects how others perceive you.____17____Similarly, slumping on the sofa conveys unwillingness to take the task seriously. Maintaining a proper posture by sitting up straight is the key to making a positive impression from the beginning.
____18____In video calls, you need to be aware that less is more. Too many hand movements can be distracting in a small screen — people need time to take in what they are hearing. And when you are listening to others, glancing at your palms and drumming your fingers could also indicate to others that you are either bored or frustrated.
Guard against “resting bored face” syndrome (综合征). Our facial expressions are visible on screen, so demonstrating an objective response to whatever you see and hear is a must-have. But communicating that you are mindful at all times is challenging during a video meeting when “resting bored face” syndrome can set in — a facial expression that others register as boredom.____19____
Be present and active — don’t multitask. Don’t check your email or tackle other work tasks when you join a video call.____20____While you may be confident that you can successfully do two or more things at once, and not lose track of what’s being discussed, the non-verbal clues you are sending other participants will say otherwise.
A. Master the art of employing gestures.
B. Use fewer hand movements to avoid conflicts.
C. Even if you are silent, others can see what you are up to.
D. For instance, crossed arms can imply defensiveness or annoyance.
E. This also applies to our virtual workplace with common video calls.
F. To avoid this, remember to nod, smile and lean forward occasionally.
G. Therefore, it’s effective to straighten up to leave a positive impression.
【答案】16.E 17.D 18.A 19.F 20.C

Sixteen-year-old Grant Mullen had always been different from his classmates. While many teenagers focused on video games and social media, Grant found joy in helping others. His compassionate nature stemmed from the countless hours he spent with his father volunteering at the Specialized Needs recreation (SNR) center in their hometown of Boise, Idaho.
As Grant’s seventeenth birthday approached, his parents noticed he seemed deep in thought. One evening at dinner, his mother asked what he was thinking about. Grant looked up from his plate and said, “Mom, I’ve been thinking about my birthday. Instead of having my usual party with just our family and close friends, I want to do something special.”
His parents exchanged curious glances. “What do you have in mind, sweetheart?” his father asked gently.
Grant’s eyes brightened as he explained his idea. “I want to invite everyone at the SNR center to celebrate with me. Many of them have never been to a birthday party before, and I think everyone deserves to feel special on their birthday.”
His mother’s face softened with emotion. “That’s a beautiful idea, Grant. But are you sure? It might be a big crowd.”
“I’m sure,” Grant replied firmly. “They always smile when we visit, and they’ve taught me so much about happiness and friendship.”
The next weekend, Grant and his father visited the center to extend the invitations. Grant also spoke to the staff at SNR, explaining his plan. They were thrilled and offered to help with the preparations.
One by one, Grant approached each person at the center. Eight-year-old Tommy, who rarely spoke, managed to whisper “thank you” with a huge smile. Middle-aged Robert, who used a wheelchair, wiped away tears of gratitude. Even the shy teenagers who usually kept to themselves began chatting excitedly about the upcoming celebration.

A. Doubtful. B. Neutral. C. Optimistic. D. Critical.
C
