My grandmother knitted Christmas stockings for each of her five children in the 1960s. Then, she made them for us, her grandchildren, too. When our grandmother died unexpectedly in 2017, it felt like the end of a tradition of handmade personalized Christmas stockings and my cousins’ chances of joining us with stockings on the fireplace were gone.
Grandma was an amazing woman, but she was hard to feel really close to when I was a child. She smiled softly when the grandkids came noisily through the door to disturb her shy, quiet peace. And instead of covering us with kisses like other grandmothers, she always had something ready for us. It took me a while to understand that the things she made meant the same as “I love you” or “I missed you”. It wasn’t that she was cold — not at all. Sometimes people as brilliant as Grandma have a hard time relating to others.
While we grew up, she was our personal Google. When I was in college, she asked if I studied the Romantic poets or how familiar I was with Aristotle. I tried my best to keep up, but there was a lot I never knew about my grandmother until she passed away. I knew and loved that every room and hallway in her house had a bookcase, and these were filled with books on every subject in several languages.
This year, I began to learn to make the Christmas stocking. At first, I considered it as a nice way to keep apart of Christmas I always loved as a child, but now I feel closer to my grandma than ever. And although my stockings will be the gifts for my cousins this year, now I understand the love and thoughts of Grandma that goes into the seemingly never-ending rows of knitting.
4. What does the author think the stockings made by Grandma were?
A. Ordinary Christmas presents. B. Personalized warm clothing.
C. The bonds between family members. D. A reminder of hard times.
5. How did Grandma express her love for her grandchildren?
A. By buying them gifts. B. By giving them kisses.
C. By offering books to them. D. By making things for them.
6. Which of the following words can best describe Grandma?
A. Determined. B. Difficult.
C. Responsible. D. Knowledgeable.
7. What was the author’s initial purpose in making the Christmas stocking?
A. To keep an old part of Christmas. B. To save money on Christmas presents.
C. To honor the memory of Grandma better. D. To pass Grandma’s knitting skills
C
If someone asked whether you like the arts, you’d probably say you do at least in theory. According to a survey, more than two-thirds of U.S. adults say the arts “lift me up beyond everyday experiences”. However, only 30 percent attended a concert of any type in 2017; 23 percent went to an art museum. Fewer than half actively created art of any kind.
The mismatch can boil down to the fact that we are weighed down by our day-to-day responsibilities, leaving our schedule packed. Maybe you like to play a little background music while you work or do the chores, but even before the pandemic, most of us rarely, if ever, saw a live performance, let alone visited a gallery or watched a play.
Too often, we let the dull reality of life get in the way of the arts. But this is a mistake. The arts are the opposite of an escape from reality; they might just be the most realistic glimpse we ever get into the nature and meaning of life. If you make time for consuming and producing the arts the same way you make time for work and exercise and family commitments, I assure you that you’ll find your life getting fuller and happier. Think of a time when you heard a piece of music and wanted to cry. Or maybe your dizziness struck as you emerged from a narrow side street in an unfamiliar city. There you found yourself in a beautiful town square as if in a fantasy. They probably stimulated a sudden awakening, much like the shock from a lungful of pure oxygen after breathing in smoggy air.
If you are among the people who feel that the arts are pure pleasures to experience and participate in, you might see them as a luxury item, while a preferable attitude is to treat the arts less like a distracting pleasure, and more like exercise or sleep, a necessity. Then draw up a schedule of your art exposure journey, and gradually weave the arts into your everyday life.
8. What prevents people from enjoying the arts according to the text?
A. Lack of interest. B. Avoidance of duty.
C. Shortage of time. D. Art space inaccessibility.
9. What can we learn about the role of the arts according to the text?
A. They explore mysteries of life. B. They spark emotional responses.
C. They enhance physical well-being. D. They offer a getaway from daily life.
10. What will probably be talked about in the following paragraph?
A. Barriers to combine the arts and life. B. Benefits of engaging with the arts.
C. Forms of distracting pleasures. D. Ways to integrate the arts into daily routine.
11. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Arts Journey: Refreshing Soul
B. The Arts Pursuit: Transforming Dull into Full
C. Embracing the Arts: From Luxury to Necessity
D. Connecting with the Arts: From Reality to Fantasy
D
Children may be innocent, unaware of the challenges and complexities of adult communication. But lacking all “learned” sophistication, that very innocence can reveal insights that adults struggle to come up with.
In human affairs, wisdom is typically regarded as developing only through gathering and correct interpretation of human interactions. It’s an outgrowth of sufficient relational experience. Sometimes, adults hide the truth of what they see to be polite or avoid trouble. On the contrary, children are not aware of other people’s feelings and how easy it is to hurt them. So they just say what they think, without thinking twice. What they say is honest and not meant to be mean, but it might not be the best thing to say either.
Kids understand in a simple way that being friendly is more important than small arguments that can mess up relationships for a while. They might ask, “Why can’t you just be friends?” To them, it doesn’t make sense to fight, and people should just forget about the past and get along again. The complexity of adult thinking makes it difficult to return to a more straightforward way of interacting.
On another note, because children don’t comprehend that as responsible adults, play is earned through work, they’ll innocently inquire as to why we can’t just play all the time. And as easy as it is to dismiss such innocent thinking, it can also get us to think about whether our work/play balance is messed up, as we regularly, and unthinkingly, value work over play.
The golden mean here often involves finding the middle ground between work and play. Children may lean too heavily in the direction of play but adults may be just as guilty in unintentionally prioritizing work over play.
Sure, we may need to engage in a certain amount of work just to survive, but our overstated sense of what our survival depends on may make us unhappy. We might not realize it, but our real goal in life isn’t just to survive. It’s to be truly happy and feel good about ourselves.
12. What does the underlined word “sophistication” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Strong desire. B. Worldly wisdom.
C. Simple honesty. D. Detailed information.
13. Why do children sometimes say truths directly that adults might avoid saying?
A. They are educated to follow their heart.
B. They lack awareness of others’ emotions.
C. They are trained to be honest from a young age.
D. They enjoy seeing adults struggle with their words.
14. What do children think of relational conflict?
A. They believe it is natural and unavoidable.
B. They see it as a sign of deep-seated problems.
C. They avoid discussing it to prevent further disagreements.
D. They think it can be resolved by forgetting previous conflicts.
15. What might children’s question about playing all the time make adults reflect on?
A. The need to work harder to earn more playtime.
B. The impossibility of playing all the time as adults.
C. Whether they focus too much on work rather than play.
D. How important it is to teach children the value of work.

Parenting can feel like a series of moments of emotional struggle, from a small child’s emotional explosion to teenage outbursts and everything in between. ____16____ Instead of seeing yourself as a frustrated parent, consider yourself as your children’s emotional regulation coach, which will reduce stress and your child’s reactivity.
Viewing yourself as an emotion coach redefines your role. See the emotional outbursts not as failures of your parenting but as opportunities for guidance. ____17____ By teaching your children to handle difficult emotions, you are showing them that you’re a safe person they can rely on. Thus, you create a supportive space for emotional learning.
Just imagine your 6-year-old, Sam. He melts down in the middle of the grocery store because he can’t have a toy he spotted. Your instinct might be frustration, embarrassment, or a desire to get him to stop by offering something he wants. ____18____
Instead of reacting, you might take a deep breath, bend down to Sam’s level and say, “I can see you’re disappointed. I feel disappointed sometimes, too.” ____19____ You’re showing him that while his feelings are valid, there are ways to express them respectfully. This shows emotions are manageable and not something to fear.
As an emotion coach, you aren’t punishing your child for their reaction or shutting down their feelings. Instead, you’re guiding him to recognize and handle his emotions, laying the groundwork for better emotional resilience (适应力). The more you practice this, the more your child learns to manage these emotions independently. ____20____
A. This will make your life less stressful.
B. It is crucial to show the value of belief.
C. You’re more likely to ignore their outbursts.
D. So why not make a change to ease these tensions?
E. But, as his emotion coach, you can shift your response.

With three little babies, I never took a break, completely ignoring any self-care. When I was too tired to make myself dinner, I’d just eat the kids’ leftover cereal (麦片粥). I thought this was a great plan to lose some weight and called it the “Cereal for Diet.” Back then,I knew nothing about nutrition. Of course, the Cereal for Diet failed, as did all my other attempts.
One day, after cleaning up all the mess my kids had made, I went out for a walk. I passed a gym. I looked away.Healthy people went there, but this was not me. While turning away,I saw an ad for a six-month fitness challenge. I continued my fast walk in the opposite direction, but that sign just stayed on my mind.
I still remember what finally motivated me to sign up for the challenge. It was a ten-minute period in which my son threw his spaghetti plate straight up, sending noodles and sauce flying everywhere. As soon as my husband got home,I said, “You’re in charge.”
I made a beeline for the gym, marched straight in and said, “Fix me.” And I was assigned a young and fit trainer, Emily. She asked what my goals were for the six-month challenge. At that moment, I was speechless. Noticing my embarrassment, Emily just handed me the heaviest weights I had in my life and said, “Okay, so in six months you will compete in a body-building show.” I tried explaining, “No, I don’t want to do a show. That sounds scary.” She ignored my fear, and we jumped into strict workouts and nutrition planning.
Over the next six months, Emily forced me to focus on myself — my wants and my needs. I learned to see food as strength and sweat as progress. I learned how to fuel my body instead of starving it, balancing proteins, carbs, and fats. Emily pushed me past my limits, correcting my form, timing my breaks, and cheering me on when I wanted to quit. I improved every day in the gym.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
One day, Emily handed me an application form.

根据第一段“My grandmother knitted Christmas stockings for each of her five children in the 1960s. Then, she made them for us, her grandchildren, too. When our grandmother died unexpectedly in 2017, it felt like the end of a tradition of handmade personalized Christmas stockings and my cousins’ chances of joining us with stockings on the fireplace were gone.”(在20世纪60年代,我的祖母为她的五个孩子每人编织圣诞袜。

根据第二段中“The mismatch can boil down to the fact that we are weighed down by our day-to-day responsibilities, leaving our schedule packed.(这种不匹配可以归结为一个事实,即我们被日常责任压得喘不过气来,使得我们的日程安排得很满)”可知,是缺少时间阻止了人们享受艺术。
根据第三段中“Think of a time when you heard a piece of music and wanted to cry. Or maybe your dizziness struck as you emerged from a narrow side street in an unfamiliar city. There you found yourself in a beautiful town square as if in a fantasy. They probably stimulated a sudden awakening, much like the shock from a lungful of pure oxygen after breathing in smoggy air.(想想你听到一首音乐想哭的时候。或者,当你从一个陌生城市的狭窄小巷中走出来时,你可能会感到头晕目眩。在那里,你发现自己置身于一个美丽的城市广场,仿佛置身于幻想之中。它们可能刺激了突然的觉醒,就像在吸入烟雾弥漫的空气后,吸入满满一口纯氧所带来的震撼一样)”可知,艺术能激起情感反应。故选B。

B 13. B 14. D 15. C
根据第一段中“Children may be innocent, unaware of the challenges and complexities of adult communication. But lacking all ‘learned’ sophistication, that very innocence can reveal insights that adults struggle to come up with. (孩子们可能很天真,没有意识到成人交流的挑战和复杂性。但正是因为缺乏所有‘习得的’ ,这种天真反而能揭示出成年人难以想出的见解。)”可知,孩子们没有意识到成人交流的挑战和复杂性,所以很天真,缺乏“sophistication”。故sophistication与孩子的“天真”相对,指成人在人际交往中积累的世故智慧,与“Worldly wisdom”意思相近。故选B项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“On the contrary, children are not aware of other people’s feelings and how easy it is to hurt them. So they just say what they think, without thinking twice. (相反,孩子们没有意识到别人的感受,也不知道伤害别人有多容易。所以他们只是不假思索地说出自己的想法。)”可知,孩子们有时会直接说出成年人可能避免说的真相,是因为他们缺乏对他人情绪的感知。故选B项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“They might ask, ‘Why can’t you just be friends?’ To them, it doesn’t make sense to fight, and people should just forget about the past and get along again. (他们可能会问:‘你们为什么不能成为朋友呢?’对他们来说,打架是没有意义的,人们应该忘记过去,重新和睦相处。)”可知,孩子们认为关系冲突可以通过忘记以前的矛盾来解决。故选D项。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“On another note, because children don’t comprehend that as responsible adults, play is earned through work, they’ll innocently inquire as to why we can’t just play all the time. And as easy as it is to dismiss such innocent thinking, it can also get us to think about whether our work/play balance is messed up, as we regularly, and unthinkingly, value work over play.

One day, Emily handed me an application form. “You’re ready,” she said with a confident smile. It was for a local body-building show, the very thing I’d once feared. My heart raced as I looked at the form, but then I thought of all the progress I'd made. I took a deep breath and filled it out, determined to face my fear. I knew this was a chance to prove to myself that I could achieve something I never thought possible.
Soon, I jumped into weeks of preparation. Every day, I spent hours in the gym, following Emily’s strict workout plan. I also paid close attention to my diet, making sure I got the right nutrients. As the show day drew near, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. But with Emily’s constant encouragement and support, I felt more and more confident. Finally, the big day arrived, and I stepped onto the stage, ready to show the world what I’d accomplished.
