Energy crops can be used for heat, electricity and even biofuels like bioethanol. They will become more important as the world turns away from fossil fuels, such as oil and coal. In a new study, researchers from the University of Surrey have shown that where you choose to plant energy crops makes a big difference to biodiversity.
A detailed analysis has shown that, compared to planting them elsewhere, planting energy crops on existing agricultural land in places like China and Central Europe could diminish harm to biodiversity. Planting in these locations could then allow agricultural land in other places to be restored to natural habitats, maximizing the benefits to biodiversity. The study is published in the Journal of Applied Ecology.
Sophi e Tudge, who carried out the research at Surrey’s Center for Environment and Sustainability, said, “Our study suggests that, as far as biodiversity is concerned, it is always best to restore farmland to nature rather than re-plant it with energy crops.”
“Yet, we are realists. In the future, more fuel will come from crops, and it is far better to plant them on existing farms than to destroy remaining natural habitats. We have shown that where you plant those crops makes a huge difference to how many species continue to grow healthily,” she added.
When farmland is restored to nature, it creates new habitats for many species. Using that land to plant energy crops instead can be a missed opportunity to improve biodiversity. Given that energy crops need to be planted somewhere, researchers calculated which locations would have the smallest net impact on biodiversity.
They studied which habitats contained the richest mix of species. They then compared that information with maps of land use and information about where energy crops could produce the biggest yields (产量). The researchers found that the harm to biodiversity could be minimized in places like Central Europe and the east coasts of the U. S. and China. However, food security, farmers’ willingness, and surrounding energy infrastructure (基础设施) are also important. “After all, we depend on them to grow crops,” she said.
4. What does the underlined word “diminish” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Make something smaller. B. Increase greatly.
C. Remain unchanged. D. Get rid of completely.
5. What can we learn from Sophie Tudge’s words in paragraph 4?
A. Highest yields are the only priority.
B. Energy crops do harm to biodiversity.
C. Restoring farmland to nature is the best choice.
D. Planting on current farms protects natural habitats.
6. What should be done in energy crop planting areas according to the last paragraph?
A. Considering many factors besides biodiversity.
B. Caring about biodiversity over other factors.
C. Focusing primarily on energy crop yields.
D. Planting energy crops in all available farmland.
7. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Farmland should be restored to nature. B. Energy crops will replace fossil fuels.
C. Biodiversity calls for concern. D. Where Energy Crops grow Affects Biodiversity.
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. A 7. D

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了能源作物种植地点对生物多样性的影响。
【4题详解】
词句猜测题。由文章第二段中“A detailed analysis has shown that, compared to planting them elsewhere, planting energy crops on existing agricultural land in places like China and Central Europe could diminish harm to biodiversity. Planting in these locations could then allow agricultural land in other places to be restored to natural habitats, maximizing the benefits to biodiversity. 故选A。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第四段中““Yet, we are realists. In the future, more fuel will come from crops, and it is far better to plant them on existing farms than to destroy remaining natural habitats. We have shown that where you plant those crops makes a huge difference to how many species continue to grow healthily,” she added. (“然而,我们也很现实。未来,更多燃料将来自作物,而且在现有农田上种植作物远比破坏剩余的自然栖息地要好得多。我们已经证明,种植作物的地点对多少物种能够继续健康生长有着巨大影响,”她补充道)”可知,在当前农场上种植能源作物可以保护自然栖息地,避免破坏它们。故选D。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。由文章最后一段中“However, food security, farmers’ willingness, and surrounding energy infrastructure (基础设施) are also important. “After all, we depend on them to grow crops,” she said. (然而,食品安全、农民的意愿和周围的能源基础设施也很重要。“毕竟,我们依靠它们来种植作物,”她说)”可知,除了生物多样性之外,还需要考虑许多其他因素。故选A。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段中“In a new study, researchers from the University of Surrey have shown that where you choose to plant energy crops makes a big difference to biodiversity. (在一项新研究中,萨里大学的研究人员发现,种植能源作物的地点对生物多样性有着重大影响)”可知,文章主要讲述了一项新的研究表明能源作物种植地点的选择对生物多样性有很大的影响。因此,文章的主旨大意是能源作物的种植地点影响生物多样性。故选D。

“How many of us as children have stared up at a church-like top of a giant tree and climbed it in wonder, which is a rally special part of our lives?” asks Bill Laurance, a tropical ecologist at James Cook University. “The leaves of big trees in forests are spreading out in all directions. We’re faced with organisms that have evolved for long periods of ecological stability.”
“There’s a lot to discuss on the issue,” says David Lindenmayer, a conservation ecologist at the Australian National University. “Climate change will mean that, in some forests, big trees won’t reach the same sizes they used to.” The effects of climate change, including long droughts, more invasive species and so on increase the simple physical challenges that big trees face in pulling water from their roots to their leaves and withstanding windstorms.
Lindenmayer and Laurance define “large, old trees” as the largest five percent mature trees within a species. The flexible definition means that in some forests, the large, old trees might be only 20 meters tall and 100 years old.
These large, old trees control the surrounding plant communities, affect water and nutrient distribution, and provide food and shelter for wildlife. “They’re really the breadbaskets of the forest,” says Laurance. “This is a very environmentally and ecologically important group of organisms, and they need special care and handling.” Determining the distribution and habitat requirements for large, old trees in the landscape is the first step towards ensuring their survival, “We have to ensure that what we’re thinking is long-term, to match the way these trees have existed for hundreds or even thousands of years,” says Laurance. “It’s going to be a real challenge to keep some places where there is still wildlife and the big church-like trees that we all really care about.”
8. How does the author lead in the topic of the text?
A. By definition. B. By quoting someone's words.
C. By comparison. D. By drawing some conclusions.
9. What can we learn about big trees from paragraph 2?
A. They have become shorter but thicker. B. They easily pull water from their roots.
C. They are affected by various factors. D. They grow taller because of climate change.
10. Which of the following does Laurance want to express in the last paragraph?
A. Planting big trees is the first step in forest protection.
B. The plants around control trees survival.
C. Big trees mainly depend on wildlife for survival.
D. It is necessary to take good care of big trees.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Protect Forest Giants B. Keep Ecological Stability
C. Deal with Forest: Organisms D. Fight Against Climate Change
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. A

Would a person born blind, who has learned to distinguish objects by touch, be able to recognize them purely by sight if he regained the ability to see? The question, known as Molyneux’s problem, is about whether the human mind has a built-in concept of shapes that is so inborn that a blind person could immediately recognize an object with restored vision. Alternatively, the concepts of shapes are not inborn but have to be learned by exploring an object through sight, touch and other senses.
After their attempt to test it in blind children failed, Lars Chittka of Queen Mary University of London and his team carried out another experiment on bumblebees. To test whether bumblebees can form an internal representation of objects, they first trained the insects to distinguish globes from cubes using a sugar reward. The bees were first trained in the light, where they could see but not touch the objects. Then they were tested in the dark, where they could touch but not see the items. The researchers found that the insects spent more time in contact with the shape they had been trained to associate with the sugar reward, even though they had to rely on touch rather than sight to distinguish the objects.
The researchers also did the opposite test with untrained bumblebees, first teaching them with rewards in the dark and then testing them in the light. Again, the bees were able to recognize the shape associated with the sugar reward, though they had to rely on sight rather than touch in the test. In short, bees have solved Molyneux’s problem because the fact suggests that they can picture object features and access them through sight or touch.
However, some experts express their warning s against the result. Jonathan Birch, a philosopher of science, cautions that the bees may have had prior experience associating visual and tactile (触觉) information about straight edges and curved surfaces in their nests.
12. What is Molyneux’s problem about?
A. Whether mankind’s sense of touch outweighs sight.
B. Whether mankind’s idea of shape is inborn or learned.
C. Whether blind people can identify the shape of an item.
D. Whether the blind can regain their sense of touch after recovery.
13. How did Lors Chittka and his colleagues try to figure out Molyneux’s problem?
A. By experimentation on blind children.
B. By conducting controlled experiments.
C. By rewarding bumblebees with sugar.
D. By observing bumblebees in their nests.
14. What is Jonathan Birch’s attitude towards the conclusion of the bee experiments?
A. Skeptical. B. Supportive.
C. Dismissive. D. Ambiguous.
15. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. Scientists Found Senses Matter
B. Visual-Tactile Puzzle Has Been Solved
C. Experiments Will Help the Blind Regain Sight
D. Bumblebees May Help Solve Molyneux’s Problem
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. A 15. D

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Teacher Appreciation Week arrived in Richmond, but for Katie, it felt like any other Monday — until she found an envelope on her front door. Inside was a note asking her to open her laptop for a surprise.
Curious, she walked to her desk and turned on the screen. A video call started, and Clay, a student she hadn’t seen for ten years, appeared with a big smile. He asked if she remembered him. Katie replied that she did and mentioned he had always loved drawing.
Clay said she was the first person who helped him believe in himself. He recalled a moment in class when Katie asked everyone to draw something they were grateful for. While the other students started right away, he just sat there, unsure. Katie came over and gave him a determined look — a small act that made him feel confident. That moment inspired him to show his gratitude. He also remembered how she took the whole class to their first concert, a Blues Traveler show, and how it broadened their world.
Clay then said he had invited someone special to help thank her. The screen switched to a music studio where the lead singer of Blues Traveler appeared, and sang a heartfelt song. He said Clay had told him how much Katie meant to the whole class and that the song was for her. With tears in her eyes, Katie smiled and said, “That is the coolest thing I have ever seen.”
After the music, Clay reappeared and told her to go outside. Katie stepped onto her front yard and paused at a decorated truck as a crowd applauded. On a big live screen on the side of that truck, dozens of her former students appeared one by one, waving, smiling, and calling out to her.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Possible version:
Katie stood still, not expecting such a surprise. Her eyes scanned the screen, lighting up as familiar faces appeared. Laughter and cheers filled the air as each student took a turn, sharing a short thank-you. One spoke about a time when Katie stayed late to help with homework. Another recalled how Katie comforted them during a tough day. Katie’s hands slowly rose to her mouth, eyes glistening with tears. Her chest tightened — not from sadness, but from joy. A professional video team hired by Clay carefully recorded every heartfelt moment, capturing the warmth and connection filling the yard.
The video of the special moments was posted online. Katie watched it again after it was shared, overwhelmed by the flood of comments. Many viewers expressed how they too had been deeply moved by their own teachers. “This is the magic of teaching,” one comment read, “The relationships we build last a lifetime, even if we don’t always realize their impact.” As Katie read through the heartfelt messages, she was reminded that teaching is more than just passing on knowledge — it’s about offering support, encouragement, and sometimes simply being there.

D

注意:
1. 续写词数应为130左右;
