Madrid is a popular destination which is considered a city of contrasts with its plentiful historic sites, resting in the shadows of modern skyscrapers.
History
This city of over 3 million people is proud of Western Europe’s largest royal palace, and some consider it to be Madrid’s most beautiful building.
Inside the royal palace 2,800 rooms are decorated in glory with museum quality furniture and artworks. Tourists can tour 50 of these large and splendid rooms.
Shopping
Madrid has some of Europe’s best shopping malls, and potential buyers love to look through the stores looking for bargains. But for 500 years, shoppers have gathered to an extremely large outdoor flea market known as the Rastro which is noted for selling everything from antiques to CDs.
Entertainment
No trip to Madrid is complete without seeing a performance of Spain’s famous art form, flamenco. Every day, flamenco performers sing, dance or play the guitar in small cafes and grand theaters alike.
Food
Madrid has a wide variety of restaurants but because the Spanish typically eat late at about 9 or 10 pm, it’s difficult to find good dinner food earlier. If you get hungry before then, the best solution is to try a tapas bar where light snacks are served. Be sure to try the jamon,a kind of dry-cured ham: Spain is famous for it.
21.What do we know about the royal palace in Madrid?
A.It can hold 2,800 people.
B.It offers 50 rooms for visit.
C.It’s been visited by 3 million people.
D.It is thought to be the largest palace in Europe.
22.What is the Rastro famous for?
A.Good dinner food. B.Various goods.
C.Its art performances. D.Its special location.
23.What is a must when travelling in Madrid according to the text?
A.Touring the Royal Palace. B.Photographing fine artworks.
C.Enjoying flamenco. D.Tasting light snacks.

In a summer lab, a girl carefully extracted (提取) DNA from a piece of lettuce — a kind of plant, holding the specific pipes as if it might break. Beside her, a boy adjusted his goggles (护目镜) but asked no questions — not because he had none, but because he had learned to stay quiet. Outside, their parents worked in Arizona’s fields, harvesting the same crop. The program was designed to show students that there is a path from the agricultural work their families have done for generations to careers in STEM.
The program was founded by Professor Marvin at Arizona State University. He grew up in a farming town as the child of immigrant farmworkers. His high school had limited funding and low expectations; college was rare for students like him. He graduated with a 1.9 GPA (Grade Point Average) and started at a community college, even earning a 0.0 GPA in his first year. With teachers’ encouragement, he kept studying, and finally earned a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins and a doctorate from Harvard.
Marvin was approached by state education officials to create a STEM program for students from migrant farmworker families — a group often underrepresented in science. He accepted the challenge and developed a 4-year summer program hosting 50 to 80 high school students each year. They live on campus, take part in hands-on labs, and experience university life.
But the most meaningful changes were not measured by numbers. Many students arrived shy and unsure. As they worked in labs and saw people who looked like them, they began asking questions and imagining futures as doctors and researchers. The program increased their interest in STEM and their college ambitions.
The professor saw himself in these students. He once was the student with a low GPA, waiting for someone to see potential that grades could not show. Watching them, he was reminded how powerful it can be when someone finally sees in you what you could not yet see in yourself.
24.Why is the STEM program created?
A.To train skilled agricultural workers. B.To connect agriculture with STEM careers.
C.To promote modern agriculture technology. D.To increase the admission to the university.
25.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.Marvin’s personal growth. B.The origin of the STEM program.
C.The present educational difficulties in Arizona. D.Marvin’s immigrant farmworkers’ background.
26.What does the underlined word “underrepresented” in the passage probably mean?
A.Underprepared. B.Over-emphasized. C.Disadvantaged. D.Less-known.
27.What is the most valuable outcome of the program?
A.Greater confidence and clearer future expectations.
B.Improved academic performance in science subjects.
C.Stronger bonds among students from similar backgrounds.
D.Official recognition achieved from the success of the program.

A new study was conducted by AI expert André Barcaui of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, who ran an experiment with a group of university students. Half were allowed to use ChatGPT to help them respond to an assignment on artificial intelligence, and half weren’t.
In a surprise test 45 days after the assignment, the students who used ChatGPT scored an average of 5.75 out of 10, while those who took the traditional study route averaged 6.85. That’s a notable difference, which chimes with other research showing that using AI to find information means we don’t take as much in. “This suggests that unrestricted ChatGPT use affected long-term memory storage, likely by reducing the cognitive effort that supports durable memory,” Barcaui writes.
In the study, the students were given two weeks to learn about AI, then had to give a 10-minute demonstration. The ChatGPT group could use the tool to search, integrate, and structure information; the other group stuck to traditional methods. Learning was faster with AI: the ChatGPT group spent an average of 3.2 hours on the assignment, compared with 5.8 hours for the non-AI group. This reminds us that using apps like ChatGPT could be robbing our brains of the exercise they need — and that has consequences.
The idea of cognitive offloading isn’t new. In 2011, a team led by psychologist Betsy Sparrow first described “digital amnesia (失忆症)” — the effect of search engines like Google on our ability to remember information. With AI assistants now able to take on much of the mental workload, studies suggest they could be changing how we think, perceive, focus and remember — not necessarily for the better.
“Future teaching strategies should aim to take advantage of the benefits of AI without sacrificing the cognitive engagement and productive struggle required for durable learning,” Barcaui writes. “In the age of AI, the core principles of human learning are not outdated; in fact, they are more important than ever to uphold.”
28.What does the underlined phrase “chimes with” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Conflicts with. B.Corresponds to. C.Contributes to. D.Comes from.
29.What explains the faster learning of ChatGPT group?
A.Limited memory storage. B.Enriched learning experience.
C.Increased learning motivation. D.Reduced cognitive involvement.
30.Why does the author mention “digital amnesia”?
A.To emphasize AI’s great risk. B.To clarify cognitive offloading.
C.To add evidence to the findings. D.To criticize over-reliance on tools.
31.What is Barcaui’s attitude toward the use of AI?
A.Supportive. B.Unclear. C.Dismissive. D.Doubtful.
D
Your child is struggling with math homework, frustrated with fractions (分数) and geometry problems that feel impossible to solve. The solution might not be more worksheets or tutoring sessions, but something far more enjoyable: building with Lego blocks.
A study involving over 500 students across 16 primary schools in England found that kids who participated in a six-week Lego-based program made measurable gains in both spatial (空间) thinking and mathematics compared to classmates who received traditional instruction. It was regular classroom teachers, not the researchers, who led the program during normal school hours.
The research team, led by Dr. Emily Farran of the University of Surrey, created the SPACE program, short for Spatial Cognition to Enhance mathematical learning. Instead of relying on drill-and-practice worksheets, the program had 6-and 7-year-olds spend 30 minutes twice a week building Lego models from picture-based instructions.
Each session followed a consistent routine. Students watched a short video that introduced a themed story, then worked individually to build up to six Lego models using step-by-step visual guides. Accuracy was emphasized over speed, and the children took each model apart before starting the next.
Of the 409 children who completed the SPACE program and the 104 children in the control group who received normal lessons, those in the Lego-building group showed statistically significant improvement in their ability to mentally rotate (旋转) objects. This skill — thinking about how shapes look when turned — is a key part of spatial thinking.
They also performed better on math assessments that covered geometry and problem-solving tasks. When children work with shapes, graphs, or fractions, they rely on spatial visualization, the skill that the Lego program appears to strengthen.
The study’s exciting findings can reach far beyond the 16 classrooms involved. “Our findings have implications for school curricula where spatial thinking is largely absent; a spatialized mathematics curriculum could raise children’s mathematics achievement,” the researchers write. They suggest that future programs might integrate spatial thinking more fully into math instruction, rather than leave it in special sessions. That kind of integrated approach could potentially lead to even greater gains.
32.How was the Lego-based program different from traditional math instruction?
A.It was conducted after school. B.It used repeated practice sheets.
C.It focused on hands-on building. D.It valued speed more than accuracy.
33.Why can Lego-building improve math learning?
A.It raises students’ interest in geometry study.
B.It helps students build strong number sense.
C.It makes abstract concepts easier to understand.
D.It enhances students’ spatial visualization ability.
34.What is the researchers’ suggestion in the last paragraph about?
A.Potential application of the findings. B.Future directions of the study.
C.Need to integrate math into real life. D.Choice of cooperative learning.
35.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To promote the Lego building program.
B.To compare two different teaching methods.
C.To explain the application value of math.
D.To introduce a new way to improve math learning.
Most students, despite age or background, truly enjoy participating in art. The attractive aspects of art keep us focused. Using art in the classroom is no different.
Students who participate in art strengthen their focus skills. 36 For visual art, that problem may be deciding which art tools or materials will create the picture in their minds. For performance art, students may need precise time to remind them. Regardless of the art medium, students must keep up with what is happening in order to successfully complete their work.
Students find art as a way of self-expression and creativity. There are no limits to art. Students can create whatever they want with their imagination. 37 Even the shyest students can express themselves through art.
Increased participation and motivation mean increased determination and perseverance. When students start an art project, they are more determined to see it completed. Most primary teachers can prove the fact that many students are not happy when their work of art is interrupted before it has been completed. 38
The development of self-expression and creativity, free from judgement, increases students’ confidence! 39 Students develop a greater sense of self by expressing themselves openly and in their own way. It is also quite rewarding for students to share their art with others and develop their interpersonal skills.
40 Participation in art is highly beneficial to students’ performance in the classroom. Art requires the use of many parts of the brain, thus, providing better overall brain usage in students.
A.Art can make students smarter.
B.Students colorfully write out the word.
C.If they can picture it, they can create it.
D.There are no right or wrong ways to create art.
E.Students must concentrate on the problem at hand.
F.Teachers should combine art with learning more carefully.
G.Students wish to realize their ideas through art without break.

Daniel had always been the top student in his class. He worked tirelessly and earned the highest grades, but in his eyes, school was a battlefield rather than a community. He spent every spare moment alone at the library. He never joined clubs or sports teams. To Daniel, his classmates weren’t friends — they were rivals.
Everything changed when his math teacher, Mr. Wilson, introduced a new class project called “Learning Together”. For one month, each student would work with a partner and do a final presentation. Daniel was paired with Alex. Outgoing and well-liked by everyone, Alex played on the basketball team and always wore a warm smile. But math was his nightmare and he frequently failed the tests.
Their first meeting was awkward. Daniel, eager to finish quickly, sped through the problems in a rushed and confusing manner. Alex looked lost but kept trying. He asked many questions like, “Why does this formula (公式) work?” or “Can we use a simpler example?” Daniel became very impatient. He thought the answers were obvious enough.
One afternoon, after another frustrating session, Alex did not leave immediately. He opened his notebook and revealed page after page of colorful drawings next to the math problems — basketball courts illustrating angles, pizza slices representing fractions (分数). “This is how I see math,” Alex said guiltily. “I just can’t connect it to the symbols on the page.”
Daniel stared at the drawings, a strange feeling washing over him. He suddenly understood: Alex wasn’t lazy or slow. He was simply trying in his own unique way. Daniel had never considered math like this. For him, it was just about rules and answers. But for Alex, it was woven into life itself.
“Maybe, I could learn something from Alex, too,” Daniel thought.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
So Daniel adopted a different approach when he was studying with Alex, again.

W: What a lovely day. Let’s go for a picnic in the garden.
M: But I promised John I’d go to study in the library with him.
W: Come on. The garden is a good place for study. See what he thinks?
M: Okay, I’ll call him.
2.C
M: Hi Karen, will you come to my birthday party at seven p.m. tomorrow?
W: Oh, I’ve made an appointment with my hairdresser. Would you mind if I came half an hour later?
M: Of course not.
3.A
M: Hey, it’s me, Allan. I heard your car wasn’t working this morning. Do you need a ride? I can drop you off.
W: Thanks, Allan, but what I need most is to get my car fixed. Do you have any garage recommendations?
M: Why bother? I’m the best mechanic.
4.B
W: I wish my teacher weren’t so hard on me. He’s written so many comments on my essay.
M: Think of it on the bright side. If you take on board what he says, you will make progress.
5.A
M: I’ve been accepted into university. You know, I got top grades in math and English.
W: That’s great. We’ll be able to take the journey together, although I’m studying geography and might be in a different campus.
6.A 7.C
W: Do you need help with any preparation? Did you get the order of business I sent out?
M: Yes, I did. And no, that’s all fine, thanks. My report is ready and I’m looking forward to presenting it.
W: Great.
M: I can tell Sven about the time change. I’ll see him later.
W: Don’t worry about telling Sven. I’ll send an email to everyone to confirm the time has changed and with an updated meeting invitation.
M: Great. Thanks, Anna.
W: OK. I’m happy that works for you. We really need you there and it’s good we don’t have to cancel it.
8.C 9.B 10.A
M: Our trip is next week, and we still need someone to take care of the pets.
W: That has been difficult. My sister is out of town, and Sam has been working 60 hours a week at his new job.
M: What about Lisa?
W: Actually, I thought of her, but our neighbors mentioned something concerning. Apparently, Lisa had been caring for their dog last month, but they came back to a bit of a mess. And she forgot to lock the front door one night!
M: Well, maybe we shouldn’t risk it.
W: I agree. But I did hear back from Sarah! She said she would love to help out. She’s good with animals, and I trust her.
M: Sarah? I would feel much better knowing she’ll be in charge.
W: Me too. She is reliable. Plus, the pets know her already, so they’ll be comfortable.
M: Great. I’ll file all the feeding schedules and care instructions and send them to her tomorrow.

W: Hi, Paul. I’ve heard you’ve been stressing out about your presentation on art.
M: Yes, I am.
W: Are you still going to talk about different types of art?
M: Well, I was planning to, but there’s so much stuff on the subject that I’m finding it difficult to put it all into one short presentation.
W: Well, there’s a lot to discuss about the different periods in art.
M: That’s a good way to start.
W: Then you can bring in how specific types of art were popular in some periods, like sculptures in the classical period and paintings in the Renaissance period. And how to use a wide variety of media to create modern art nowadays. Just keep it brief, because it’s a large area. There are so many periods and movements in art, and you don’t want to just list them one by one.
M: I agree. Thanks a lot, Isabel.

M: You look upset, Julia. Is the work on your aunt’s farm really that unpleasant?
W: No. But I might have to call off the trip to Morocco.
M: How come?
W: My father thinks going abroad is dangerous. He once went to Tanzania on business and experienced something unpleasant. I explained that the situation was not like what he thought, but he insisted on his opinion and asked me to find other voluntary work in New Zealand. We almost argued over that.
M: I think he just cares about you too much. How about your mother?
W: My mother stands by me. She thinks what I want to do is worth my while. But she fails to persuade my father to give up his idea.
M: Then what do you plan to do this holiday instead?
W: I don’t know, Allen. What’s your advice?
M: If I were you, I would learn something new like programming. Last year, I managed to get a driver’s license during the holiday. The swimming course was also part of my plan, but there was not enough time.

Sit down, everyone. And put your books away. We won’t need them. Today’s class is different. To start with, thanks for being kind to each other. I always notice everyone’s caring behaviour towards other classmates. And we can all learn to treat each other better. We all want to live in a happier world, right?
I’m talking about being polite and how it makes life better for everyone. When I was your age, my dad taught me these simple rules. These rules improved my life in school and work, so I want to share them with you all as well.
First, never laugh at others when they make mistakes. Second, always let people speak and listen to them closely. And most importantly, treat others the way you want to be treated. No need to write these down. Instead, I’ll share a paper with these rules listed. Before we review the next rules, I’d like some of you to present a story with the class about a very polite person you know.

根据第二段“He grew up in a farming town as the child of immigrant farmworkers. His high school had limited funding and low expectations; college was rare for students like him. He graduated with a 1.9 GPA (Grade Point Average) and started at a community college, even earning a 0.0 GPA in his first year. With teachers’ encouragement, he kept studying, and finally earned a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins and a doctorate from Harvard.(他在一座农业小镇长大,父母是移民农场工人。
根据第三段“Marvin was approached by state education officials to create a STEM program for students from migrant farmworker families — a group often underrepresented in science.(州教育官员找到马文,希望他为移民务农家庭的学生开设STEM项目,这是一个在科学领域往往underrepresented的群体)”并结合这类学生出身普通、教育资源有限、很少涉足科研领域的背景可知,该群体在科研领域处于弱势、缺乏话语权。

根据第二段“In a surprise test 45 days after the assignment, the students who used ChatGPT scored an average of 5.75 out of 10, while those who took the traditional study route averaged 6.85. That’s a notable difference, which chimes with other research showing that using AI to find information means we don’t take as much in.(在布置作业后45天的一次意外测试中,使用ChatGPT的学生平均得分为5.75分(满分10分),而采用传统学习方式的学生平均分为6.85分。这是一个显著的差异,chimes with其他研究结果,这些研究表明使用人工智能查找信息意味着我们吸收的知识更少)”可知,本项研究发现使用ChatGPT的学生测试成绩远低于不使用的学生,该结论和其他已有研究得出的“使用AI会减少知识吸收”的结论一致,可知chimes with意思是“与……一致、相符”,与Corresponds to“与……一致、符合”意思一致。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段“This suggests that unrestricted ChatGPT use affected long-term memory storage, likely by reducing the cognitive effort that supports durable memory(这表明无限制使用ChatGPT会影响长期记忆存储,原因很可能是它减少了支撑长效记忆所需的认知努力)”以及第三段“This reminds us that using apps like ChatGPT could be robbing our brains of the exercise they need(这提醒我们,使用ChatGPT这类应用可能会剥夺大脑所需的锻炼)”可知,ChatGPT组完成任务更快,是因为人工智能承担了大部分认知工作,减少了学习者自身的认知参与。
第四段开头提出“The idea of cognitive offloading isn’t new.(认知卸载的概念并不新鲜)”,接着“In 2011, a team led by psychologist Betsy Sparrow first described “digital amnesia (失忆症)” — the effect of search engines like Google on our ability to remember information. With AI assistants now able to take on much of the mental workload, studies suggest they could be changing how we think, perceive, focus and remember — not necessarily for the better.(2011年,心理学家Betsy Sparrow领导的一个团队首次描述了“数字失忆症”——谷歌等搜索引擎对我们记忆信息能力的影响。
根据最后一段“Future teaching strategies should aim to take advantage of the benefits of AI without sacrificing the cognitive engagement and productive struggle required for durable learning(未来的教学策略应当着眼于利用人工智能的优势,同时不牺牲长效学习所需的认知参与和有效的思考努力)”可知,Barcaui并不反对使用人工智能,他支持合理发挥AI的优势,只是要求保证学习者获得足够认知参与和大脑锻炼,因此他对AI的使用持支持态度,只是强调要理性合理应用。

根据第三段中“Instead of relying on drill-and-practice worksheets, the program had 6-and 7-year-olds spend 30 minutes twice a week building Lego models from picture-based instructions. (该项目的做法不是依赖反复练习的活页练习题,而是让六七岁的孩子每周两次、每次30分钟,根据图示说明来搭建乐高模型。)”可知,乐高积木搭建计划与传统数学教学的不同之处在于它侧重于动手搭建。
33.细节理解题。根据第六段中“When children work with shapes, graphs, or fractions, they rely on spatial visualization, the skill that the Lego program appears to strengthen. (当孩子们处理形状、图形或分数时,他们依赖空间可视化能力,而乐高程序似乎可以加强这种技能。)”可知,乐高积木搭建可以提高数学学习是因为它增强了学生的空间可视化能力。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The study’s exciting findings can reach far beyond the 16 classrooms involved. (这项研究的令人兴奋的发现远远超出了所涉及的16个教室。“我们的发现对学校课程有影响,因为学校课程中基本没有空间思维;空间化的数学课程可以提高孩子的数学成绩,”研究人员写道。他们建议未来的课程可能将空间思维更全面地融入数学教学中,而不是将其留在特殊课程中。)”可知,研究人员在最后一段的建议是关于研究结果的潜在应用。
35.推理判断题。根据第一段中“Your child is struggling with math homework, frustrated with fractions (分数) and geometry problems that feel impossible to solve. The solution might not be more worksheets or tutoring sessions, but something far more enjoyable: building with Lego blocks. (你的孩子正在为数学作业而挣扎,对分数和几何问题感到沮丧,这些问题似乎无法解决。解决方案可能不是更多的工作表或辅导课程,而是更有趣的事情:用乐高积木搭建。)”以及结合全文内容可知,文章主要介绍了一项研究,该研究发现乐高搭建项目能提升儿童的空间思维和数学能力,是一种改善数学学习的新方法。因此文章的主要目的是介绍一种提高数学学习的新方法。

66.Dear Peter and classmates,
I’m glad to have the opportunity to share my views about the topic.
I fully agree that rote-learned knowledge is less emphasized in the AI era, because AI can remember and output a large amount of information more quickly and accurately than humans. Instead, developing students’ ability to propose valuable questions is more important, as it helps us think independently and solve problems creatively, which is what AI cannot replace. Such ability enables us to explore unknown fields actively and become lifelong learners. This is essential in the fast-developing AI age.
In short, independent thinking and questioning ability matter most.
Thank you.

67. So Daniel adopted a different approach when he was studying with Alex, again. Whenever he saw Alex struggling to understand the abstract formulas, instead of feeling annoyed, he would try his best to find good examples from real life to illustrate the logic behind the symbols. Alex would add vivid pictures beside them. To his surprise, Alex made very rapid progress. Daniel also found that he could understand those formulas much better!
On the presentation day, Daniel and Alex demonstrated their unique approach. Alex first drew on the blackboard. Then Daniel would explain the mathematical principles behind the vivid pictures. Their presentation was a perfect blend of creativity and logic that amazed the whole class and earned thunderous applause. Enjoying the unexpected success, Daniel realized for the first time that true excellence wasn’t about outperforming others and that it was about learning from each other and growing together.
