Careers in science are generally believed to be too complex for students who aren’t talented or clever enough, but Scott Kelly, commander of the International Space Station, would prove it’s wrong. As a kid, he was abstracted and uninterested in science and all other subjects as well. He couldn’t focus on what the teachers were saying, spending most of his time in school daydreaming. Therefore, he earned terrible grades and barely graduated from high school, and he even thought he would never fulfill his dreams. That all changed when he picked up and read The Right Stuff, Tom Wolfe’s classic account of the pioneering Americans who first explored space. Inspired at last, he was determined to be an astronaut, which meant doing well in science classes. So that day, he made up his mind to do well in it. After so many years of daydreaming, it wouldn’t be effortless. But he started thinking about it like a game. The more he practiced his study skills, the more he gained and the better he got. Eventually, it became a competition with himself to see how good he could get. No one was more surprised than him when a former daydreamer started getting straight A’s in science, which is essential to be an astronaut. So we need to stop furthering the statement that science is just too hard. If you’re students who have been told “you are not a science person” or “your brain doesn’t think that way”, just ignore the comments! Everyone who wants to can learn this stuff — they just have to be motivated to do the work. Paragraph 1: Scott Kelly’s story spread widely among teenagers who struggled with science. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Hearing some classmates doubt their own talent, I often share Scott’s experience. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 一、文本分析 1.角色 ________________________________________________________ 2.视角 第________人称 3. People believe science is only for talented students--- _________________ --- Scott was a daydreaming kid with poor school grades--- _________________ --- A book inspired him to dream of being an astronaut--- _________________ --- He worked hard, improved constantly and finally got excellent science grades--- Everyone can learn science well with motivation and efforts 4. What is the common misunderstanding about science learning? :___________________________________ What was Scott like when he was a little kid?:_________________________________ What changed Scott’s life completely?:________________________________________________ What did Scott do to achieve his dream?:__________________________________________ What result did Scott’s efforts bring about?:_____________________________________________ What is the author’s opinion on learning science?:_________________________________________________ What does the story tell us?:________________________________________________ 5. Scott:unfocused and hopeless→___________→determined and diligent→___________→confident and accomplished 7. 综合概括(中英各一句) 中文:______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 英文:______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 8. 句式 定语从句;状语从句;宾语从句;比较级句型;非谓语动词 ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 9. 本文主题 励志成长类:_______________________________________ 二. 1——How did teenagers respond to Scott’s inspiring story? ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2 衔接句2——What lesson does the story teach us and what is the final conclusion? ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 三. →①__________________→②__________________→③_______________; 第二段:听到同学们怀疑自己天赋,我常常分享Scott的经历。 →④__________________→⑤__________________→⑥_______________。 Scott Kelly’s story spread widely among teenagers who struggled with science. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Hearing some classmates doubt their own talent, I often share Scott’s experience. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 参考答案 一、文本分析 1. People believe science is only for talented students--- Such wrong belief discourages many ordinary learners--- Scott was a daydreaming kid with poor school grades--- He was once hopeless about his future--- A book inspired him to dream of being an astronaut--- He decided to improve his science learning--- He worked hard, improved constantly and finally got excellent science grades--- Everyone can learn science well with motivation and efforts 4. What is the common misunderstanding about science learning? :People generally believe science is too complex and only talented students can master it well. Many students who once feared science and doubted themselves were greatly inspired. They no longer believed they were incapable of learning science well due to lack of talent. Instead, they shifted their focus to diligent practice and self-improvement. Many teenagers began to make practical learning plans, sticking to daily accumulation just as Scott did. Gradually, more and more learners got rid of negative self-judgment and made steady progress in science subjects. Hearing some classmates doubt their own talent, I often share Scott’s experience. I tell them that no one is born a science learner and no dream is impossible to fulfill. Scott’s transformation fully proves that motivation and persistence matter far more than inborn talent. We should ignore negative comments and break self-limitation. As long as we hold fast to our goals and keep working hard, we can definitely make progress and achieve our dreams sooner or later.
