Just six weeks after becoming an ultra-running (超长距离跑)world record holder, Sarah Perry has won big again — this time claiming the victory in one of the world’s craziest winter ultra-marathons. The Hill — staged from December 5 to December 7 — saw runners attempting to complete 56 tiring laps up and down the Wrekin in Shropshire inside 48 hours.
From the 24 runners who set off on Friday night, Sarah was the only finisher, completing the 160-mile race in 47 hours and 1 minute. Her total ascent (攀登) up the rocky track 56 times was about 47,000 ft. This latest win followed her headline-grabbing run at the Backyard Ultra World Championships in October when she set a new women’s world record.
Sarah Perry said, “I knew that six weeks to recover and build back up was a big task, but I’ve wanted to do The Hill for so long because it’s always been my dream. Besides, this was the first time it had been run in five years, so I just had to be on that start line. I’m excited to have finished and, quite honestly, can’t believe that it was possible for me.”
Sarah added, “The last third of the race was hard. The biggest difficulty was the lack of time. Unlike in backyard ultra-races, there are no scheduled breaks so I was constantly doing the calculations in my head to figure out whether I could complete it. I chose to skip breaks and ignore things that I’d usually get sorted, like wet socks and sleep deprivation (剥夺), and instead chose to keep on the hill.”
The race follows a set of strict rules, meaning runners are largely self-sufficient. No poles, headphones, outside assistance, crew, pacers or supporters are allowed. Runners are only permitted to stop for a maximum of 30 minutes at a shelter, situated at the foot of each lap.
INOV8 founder Wayne Edy said, “We are incredibly proud of Sarah and her outstanding achievements in ultra-running. Sarah is short, but she’s very brave and determined. She deserves all this success.”
24.What do we know about The Hill ultra-marathon?
A.It was held for the first time this year.
B.It allowed runners to use poles for assistance.
C.It was held in October in Shropshire.
D.It required runners to finish 56 laps within two days.
25.Why did Sarah Perry decide to take part in The Hill?
A.She was eager to become famous. B.She wanted to set another world record.
C.She hoped to realize her long-standing dream. D.She intended to challenge physical limits.
26.What can we infer from Sarah’s words in paragraph 4?
A.She felt confident about winning. B.She skipped sleep to finish the race.
C.She regretted ignoring her health. D.She struggled with the hilly track.
27.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Sarah Perry: A Strong-willed Runner B.The Rules of Ultra-running Races
C.The Hill: A Crazy Winter Ultra-marathon D.Sarah Perry’s Training for The Hill

Left-handed people, making up only about one in ten of the population, often face challenges in a world designed for right-handers. However, they are over-represented in certain one-on-one sports like fencing (击剑) and table tennis.
The conventional explanation for this is that the scarcity of lefties means right-handed athletes lack familiarity with them as opponents. Nevertheless, Dr. Tim Simon, a researcher in Italy, suspected that left-handers might have a natural-born advantage in these sports. To test his idea, Dr. Simon studied the performance of top athletes in badminton, table tennis, tennis and three types of fencing for over a decade. He reasoned that if the advantage was only due to unfamiliarity, it would decrease at the highest levels of competition, where players would be wise to lefties’ tricks. However, if it was an inborn factor, the advantage might actually increase.
His research revealed an interesting pattern. In foil (花剑) and épée fencing (重剑), and table tennis, there was indeed an increase in left-handedness at the summit. For example, 18% of the top 200 male epee fencers and 23% of the top male foil fencers were lefties, but that went up to 28% and 31% respectively when only the top 100 were considered. The other three sports, however, did not show this effect.
Dr. Simon suggests this difference comes from how left-handed people’s brains work. He believes their brains are especially good at processing visual, spatial and timing information and generating quick responses, which is crucial for those rapid-action sports such as foil and épée fencing. Table tennis requires similar skillfulness. Sabre fencing (佩剑), by contrast, involves larger swinging movements similar to those employed in tennis and badminton.
Even tiny differences in brain activity can make a huge impact at the highest level, where “being a split second faster than an opponent separates victory from defeat”. This research helps us understand that individual differences, even minute ones, can lead to unique strengths and successes.
28.Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “scarcity” in paragraph 2?
A.Equality. B.Innocence. C.Rarity. D.Imbalance.
29.What did Simon’s experiment seek to distinguish between?
A.Different athletes’ tricks. B.Two sources of advantage.
C.Top players’ performance. D.The impacts of unfamiliarity.
30.What do the statistics in paragraph 3 imply?
A.Left-handers favor specific fencing styles.
B.A higher proportion of athletic left-handers.
C.The variations among different fencing events.
D.Lefties have an edge in certain top-level sports.
31.According to Dr. Simon, what accounts for lefties’ sport-specific excellence?
A.Their unique brain structure. B.Their superior technical skills.
C.Their swifter brain processing. D.Their special movement patterns.

On April 19, 2026, the streets of Beijing witnessed an extraordinary race. Over 300 humanoid robots lined up alongside 12,000 human runners to compete in a half marathon — a distance of 21.0975 kilometers. This was not a scene from a science fiction movie but the second annual Humanoid Robot Half Marathon held in the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area.
The event has grown dramatically since its first edition. Last year, only 20 teams participated, and just six robots managed to finish the race. Many stumbled, fell, or ran out of battery power halfway through. This year, however, more than 100 teams from 13 provinces and even five international teams joined the competition. Nearly 40 percent of the robots used autonomous navigation, meaning they found their way without human remote control.
The star of the race was a robot named "Lightning,” which completed the course in just 50 minutes and 26 seconds — nearly seven minutes faster than the human world record for a half marathon. But not every robot was built for speed. The challenging course included flat roads, slopes, sharp turns, and narrow paths that tested each machine's balance, battery life, and real-time decision-making abilities.
So why hold a marathon for robots? Experts say such events are not just for entertainment. They serve as a real-world test for technologies that will one day be used in factories, hospitals, and even our homes. Running 21 kilometers forces engineers to solve problems like overheating motors, battery efficiency, and stable movement over uneven ground. "The problems exposed on the racetrack are sometimes more valuable than a smooth finish,” one industry observer noted.
The robot marathon reflects a larger trend: 2026 is widely seen as the year humanoid robots begin mass production. Competitions like this push the technology forward faster than any laboratory test could. As robots continue to move from the lab to the real world, the sight of them racing down city streets may soon feel less like a spectacle and more like a preview of everyday life.
32.How has the robot half marathon changed since last year?
A.Fewer teams participated due to stricter rules.
B.The number of teams increased by nearly five times.
C.Robots were no longer allowed to use remote control.
D.The race distance was shortened to 10 kilometers.
33.What was special about the robot named "Lightning”?
A.It was the only robot that completed the race without falling
B.It finished the half marathon faster than the human world record.
C.It was controlled entirely by a human operator with a remote.
D.It ran out of battery just a few meters before the finish line
34.According to the passage, why are robot marathons considered valuable?
A.They provide entertainment for people who are bored with human sports.
B.They allow engineers to test and improve real-world robotic technologies.
C.They help robot companies earn large amounts of money from ticket sales.
D.They prove that robots are already smarter than human beings in every way.
35.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Humanoid robots will soon replace all human athletes in sports competitions.
B.The public is still not interested in watching robots perform physical tasks.
C.Robot competitions help speed up the development of practical robot technology.
D.Laboratories are still the best places to test humanoid robot performance.

When students step onto a sports field, they are not just playing a game. They are entering a world where running, passing, and scoring become tools to build something far more valuable than prizes. 36 This unseen connection between players turns individual efforts into shared success. It also creates memories, which last long after the final whistle blows.
37 A quick look, a small nod, or a raised hand can share important information during a game. Players learn to read each other’s moves and trust that teammates will do their part. This kind of silent understanding builds confidence and makes the team stronger than any single star player could ever be.
Supporting teammates through tough moments is another key lesson sports teach. When someone misses a shot, drops a pass, or makes a mistake, the best teams don’t blame (抱怨) — they encourage. 38 This care for others creates a safe space where everyone feels brave enough to take risks and grow.
Sharing both victory and defeat equally strengthens team spirit. 39 Losing together, though hard, teaches courage and how to respect opponents (对手). These shared experiences create unbreakable connections that often turn teammates into lifelong friends.
The skills learned on the field easily apply to everyday situations. Students who play team sports often do better in group projects because they know how to listen, cooperate, and value different strengths. 40
So, sports offer far more than physical exercise. They are classrooms where young people learn to work as one, care for others, and grow into responsible individuals.
A.That is called team spirit.
B.Winning as one brings joy.
C.Players will face challenges together.
D.Doing sports can be good for our minds too.
E.They are also more willing to help others succeed.
F.Team sports teach young people to communicate without words.
G.Saying “Great try!” or “You’ll get it next time!” helps players get better.

The year 2026 marks 56 55th anniversary of Ping-Pong diplomacy, a landmark event 57 began with an unexpected incident at the 31st World Table Tennis Championships in Nagoya, Japan. It opened a new chapter of people-to-people exchanges between China and the United States, 58 (show) how a small sport could clear gaps and strengthen cross-country friendship.
The historic moment happened 59 April 4, 1971. American player Glenn Cowan got on the bus 60 (reserve) for Chinese players by accident. Star athlete Zhuang Zedong gave him a silk gift as a warm 61 (kind). The gift carried beautiful pictures of Huangshan, one of China’s world-famous natural 62 (wonder). The next day, Cowan gave Zhuang a printed T-shirt in return. Their friendly communication caught global attention and led to 63 (close) communication between the two countries.
Soon the US table tennis team got an official invitation 64 (visit) China. They played friendly games and felt Chinese culture personally. Grace and Ellen, both passionate dancers, were friends and fierce competitors (竞争者). They shared similar taste in music, dressing styles, and even wore shoes of the same size. Both had committed themselves to preparing for the competition.
Grace practiced very hard, rising before sunrise. She perfected every movement. She knew that this competition wasn't just about personal success; it was also about upholding her school’s honour.“Grace, you’re incredible!” Grace’s dance instructor, Mrs Anderson, often praised her. “Your hard work will pay off.”
Ellen had been practising hard for this competition as well. After school, she would head straight to the dance studio, tirelessly perfecting every step and twirl (旋转). Her dance shoes had become an extension of her feet, and her heart burned with a strong desire for victory.“Ellen, you’re a natural (有天赋的人),” her fellow dancers would often say. “You’ve got this.”
The day of the competition finally arrived, and there were five competitors fighting for the championship title. Ellen was scheduled to perform before Grace.
On competition day, five competitors fought for the title. Ellen was scheduled to perform before Grace. Backstage, she panicked — she had taken her little sister’s shoes by mistake. They were a size too small. As the stage manager announced she was next, Grace overheard Ellen whispering to her friend Sarah, “I brought the wrong shoes. They are too small. What am I going to do?” Grace’s heart sank as she overheard the conversation.

Today, we’re exploring the history, music and impact of one of the world’s greatest bands, the Beatles. Regular listeners will know I’m a huge fan of the band. I play Beatles’ songs every Saturday on my Sixties Sounds show, and when it comes to my daily Drivetime show, I play them every chance I get! Now, here we go. We’ll explore the stories behind their most famous recordings and discuss the challenges they faced, both as individuals and as a group. Now, let’s start at the very beginning with a song from the Quarrymen, the rock and roll group formed by a teenager John Lennon in 1956. Paul McCartney joined in 1957, followed by George Harrison, one year later. In Spite of All the Danger is the first recording that brings together all three future Beatles members. Mainly written by McCartney, sung by Lennon, and featuring two Harrison guitar solos, it’s a great example of their early sound.

【答案】24.D 25.C 26.B 27.A

根据第四段中的“I chose to skip breaks and ignore things that I’d usually get sorted, like wet socks and sleep deprivation, and instead chose to keep on the hill.
C
根据第一段“Left-handed people, making up only about one in ten of the population, often face challenges in a world designed for right-handers.(左撇子仅占人口的约十分之一,他们在这样一个为右撇子设计的世界里常常会遭遇诸多困难)”可知,左撇子仅占人口十分之一,数量少,很稀有,故划线词意思是“稀有”。
根据第二段“To test his idea, Dr. Simon studied the performance of top athletes in badminton, table tennis, tennis and three types of fencing for more than a decade. He reasoned that if the advantage was only due to unfamiliarity, it would decrease at the highest levels of competition, where players would be wise to lefties’ tricks. However, if it was an inborn factor, the advantage might actually increase.(为了验证自己的这一观点,西蒙博士对顶尖运动员在羽毛球、乒乓球、网球以及三种击剑项目中的表现进行了长达十多年的研究。他推断,如果这种优势仅仅是由于不熟悉所致,那么在最高水平的比赛中这种优势就会减弱,因为在那里,选手们会识破左撇子的招数。然而,如果这是一种与生俱来的因素,那么这种优势实际上可能会进一步增强)”可知,西蒙的实验旨在区分两种不同的优势来源。
30.推理判断题。根据第三段“His research revealed an interesting pattern. In foil (花剑) and épée fencing (重剑), and table tennis, there was indeed an increase in left-handedness at the summit. For example, 18% of the top 200 male épée fencers and 23% of the top male foil fencers were lefties, but that went up to 28% and 31% respectively when only the top 100 were considered. The other three sports, however, did not show this effect.(他的研究揭示了一个有趣的规律。在花剑、重剑以及乒乓球项目中,顶尖选手中左撇子的占比明显更高。例如,男子重剑前两百名选手中左撇子占18%,男子花剑前两百名中占23%;而仅统计前一百名时,这一比例分别升至28%和31%。但其余三项运动并未出现这一现象)”可知,第三段中的这些数字意味着左撇子在某些顶级运动项目中具有优势。
31.细节理解题。根据第四段“He believes their brains are especially good at processing visual, spatial and timing information and generating quick responses, which is crucial for those rapid-action sports such as foil and épéé fencing.(他认为他们的大脑在处理视觉、空间以及时间信息方面尤为出色,并且能够迅速做出反应,这对于诸如花剑和重剑击剑这类需要快速反应的运动来说至关重要)”可知,据西蒙博士所说,导致左撇子在特定运动项目中表现出色的原因是他们的大脑处理信息的速度更快。

根据第二段“Last year, only 20 teams participated, and just six robots managed to finish the race. Many stumbled, fell, or ran out of battery power halfway through. 第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

上文“They are entering a world where running, passing, and scoring become tools to build something far more valuable than prizes.(他们正在进入一个世界,在这个世界里,跑步、传球和得分成为建立比奖品更有价值的东西的工具)”介绍赛场协作的价值。下文“This unseen connection between players turns individual efforts into shared success.(队员之间这种看不见的联系将个人的努力转化为共同的成功)”说明这种看不见的联系将个人努力转化为共同成功。 A项“这就是团队精神”符合语境,对上文的“something far more valuable”进行定义,下文“This unseen connection”指代该项中的“team spirit”。
37.下文“A quick look, a small nod, or a raised hand can share important information during a game.(比赛中眼神、点头、抬手都能传递重要信息)”讲述赛场无声的交流方式。
38.上文“When someone misses a shot, drops a pass, or makes a mistake, the best teams don’t blame (抱怨)— they encourage.(当有人投篮不中、传球失误或犯错时,最好的球队不会责怪——他们会鼓励)”说明优秀球队会在队友失误时给予鼓励。
下文“Losing together, though hard, teaches courage and how to respect opponents (对手).(一起输掉比赛虽然很艰难,但它教会了我们勇气和如何尊重对手)”说明一起输也有价值。
40.上文“Students who play team sports often do better in group projects because they know how to listen, cooperate, and value different strengths.(参加团队运动的学生在小组项目中往往表现更好,因为他们知道如何倾听、合作和重视不同的优势)”说明运动培养了学生的合作和倾听能力。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Grace knew her shoes would fit Ellen perfectly, but she hesitated. She had spent months practicing every turn, and these shoes had carried her through countless long days of training. She wondered if giving them away would break her own chance to win. But then she saw Ellen’s shaky face, which was full of fear and hopelessness. Grace took a deep breath and walked over, handing the shoes to Ellen with a soft smile. She said that a true dancer should never lose the chance to shine just because of a small mistake.
Tears of gratitude welled up in Ellen’s eyes as she slipped into Grace’s shoes. They felt soft and steady, just like the warm encouragement that Grace had given her. She walked onto the stage with confidence and finished every movement smoothly. Her performance was so wonderful that all the audience cheered loudly. Later, Grace also gave her own show heart and soul, and both of them won big praise from the judges. They realized that friendship was far more precious than any prize in the competition.

Grace knew her shoes would fit Ellen perfectly, but she hesitated. She had spent countless hours training in this pair of dancing shoes, and they were vital for her performance later. Yet when she saw Ellen’s trembling lips and desperate eyes, her desire to win faded away. Grace walked up and handed the shoes to Ellen, telling her that every dancer deserved a chance to show herself on stage.
Tears of gratitude welled up in Ellen’s eyes as she slipped into Grace’s shoes. The shoes fit perfectly and gave her great confidence. She danced smoothly and beautifully, earning warm cheers from the audience. Later, Grace finished her own performance wonderfully too. Both girls gained high scores from judges. They learned that sincere friendship is far more valuable than any competition prize.
