培优提能练(三) THE MEDIA UNIT 6 A (2024·山东威海高二上期末) About two months ago,I removed a delivery app from my phone. Not because I didn’t like using it.I loved it.Like most cheap, modern luxuries though, there are hidden costs. Ⅰ. “Restaurants are barely surviving.Delivery apps will kill them.” was a headline in a newspaper, one of many stories exploring the unfair sign-up strategies and high fees taken by these tech companies. Moreover, there were reports about bad working conditions for delivery riders, leading to tragic accidents, even deaths. That’s truly unbearable! I deleted the app and haven’t used it,or any of its competitors, since.Instead of ordering online, now I either cook something or get takeaway nearby.Cooking better food has been a great motivation for me.On lazy nights,I’ve discovered that I can still make a satisfying meal by using whatever ingredients I have on hand. This approach has also saved me much money. As with lots of online shopping,I’d been ordering food without much thought about the cost.Cooking is almost always cheaper and so is old-school takeaway. These changes have cost me one thing—time. One reason the apps are so popular is that they meet the needs of the convenience-seeking,time-starved individuals. But rather than adding to my stress, having to plan meals again somehow made life less so.Some days it’s been a good motivation to stop work earlier, and engage in activities like going to the shops,or start chopping onions.Walking to pick up takeaway forces you to go for a walk. The change in habit forced me to be on my devices a bit less and to be in my actual life and neighbourhood a bit more. The process has made me think about how technological advances do save us time, but time for what? For me,the answer was often just more time working,or more time online.Making my own food feels like taking back time I had given up for things far less nourishing(有营养的). 1.Which might be the reason for the author to remove a delivery app? A.Her passion for cooking. B.Her boredom with online ordering. C.Her preference for another app. D.Her concern for its negative impacts. 根据第二段“...stories exploring the unfair sign-up strategies and high fees taken by these tech companies. Moreover, there were reports about bad working conditions for delivery riders, leading to tragic accidents, even deaths. That’s truly unbearable!” 2.What does the author think of cooking? A.Addictive and money-saving. B.Cheap and convenient. C.Time-consuming but rewarding. D.Motivating but stressful. 根据第三段中“On lazy nights,I’ve discovered that I can still make a satisfying meal by using whatever ingredients I have on hand. This approach has also saved me much money.”及第四段中“These changes have cost me one thing—time.” 3.What does “The process” refer to in the last paragraph? A.Reflecting on the influence of hi-tech. B.Adapting to life free of delivery apps. C.Getting into a healthy eating habit. D.Rediscovering the fun of cooking. 根据第四段中“But rather than adding to my stress, having to plan meals again somehow made life less so...The change in habit forced me to be on my devices a bit less and to be in my actual life and neighbourhood a bit more.” 4.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.My Order Never Arrived B.Why Delivery Apps Get Less Active C.What Delivery Apps Can Not Offer Me D.The Convenience Was Not Worth the Cost 解析 √ B (2024·江苏高二上期末) Two companies,Heirloom Carbon Technologies in California and CarbonCure Technologies in Canada, both working on CO2 capture systems, are working together to collect CO2 and put it into new concrete. Heirloom recently collected 30 kilograms of CO2 from the air and transported it to Central Concrete, which was able to put the gas into a new kind of concrete. The joint effort between Heirloom and CarbonCure was the first time that CO2 taken from the atmosphere using such Direct Air Capture technology had been secured in concrete. The waste gas will stay there for hundreds of years. Friedman,a top scientist, noted that the amount of CO2 contained in the project is extremely small compared to the overall amount that needs to removed.“But that’s how it starts,” he said. Heirloom’s chief,Samala, explained the process, which involves limestone(石灰岩).Heirloom heats crushed limestone, which releases the CO2 it contains. Then the limestone can capture more gas in the same way a sponge takes in water. The company then repeats the process multiple times to collect more of the polluting gas. Building is a very polluting industry.Concrete alone accounts for eight per cent of the world’s CO2 production.CarbonCure mixes the gas with concrete’s ingredients, which makes a stronger final product. The concrete does not even require cement(水泥),a usual additive to concrete. This also helps in the fight against CO2 as cement production requires a lot of energy. The leader of CarbonCure said the new processes would reduce concrete’s carbon production by about five per cent. The technology is promising but would require widespread use to make a real difference.Samala guessed it would cost hundreds of millions or billions of dollars to establish enough centres and systems. He thinks companies that work in other pollution-reducing areas will support carbon capture projects like this. Khan,a science director at Carbon180,a group that works to reduce carbon pollution, called the technology “a really thoughtful way to get around the current bottleneck of storage” for captured carbon. 5.What do the two companies do? A.They turn CO2 into concrete. B.They use concrete to trap CO2. C.They jointly produce concrete. D.They sell CO2 capture systems. 根据第一段“Two companies...both working on CO2 capture systems, are working together to collect CO2 and put it into new concrete.” 6.What does Friedman think of the project? A.It’s a big deal. B.It’s a dead end. C.It’s a good start. D.It’s a heavy burden. 根据第三段“Friedman...‘But that’s how it starts,’ he said.” 7.What’s paragraph 4 mainly about? A.How CO2 is captured. B.Why CO2 is captured. C.How limestone is used. D.Why limestone is used. 故选A。 解析 8.What can be learned about the project? A.It cost a large sum of money. B.It caused a real bottleneck. C.It made a real difference. D.It may enjoy popularity. 根据倒数第二段中“Samala...He thinks companies that work in other pollution-reducing areas will support carbon capture projects like this.”和最后一段“Khan...called the technology ‘a really thoughtful way to get around the current bottleneck of storage’ for captured carbon.” 解析 (2024·福建漳州高二上期末) Why Experiencing a New Culture Is Good for You Often the best way to really explore a new place and culture is by spending abundant time there.A quick vacation may give you a glimpse(瞥) into your destination. G.But experiences like student or work exchange programs allow you to immerse(沉浸) in a new culture. √ 上文“A quick vacation may give you a glimpse(瞥) into your destination.” Dealing with culture shock. Culture shock is a response to your new surroundings when abroad that can leave you confused, anxious and feeling lonely. 2 The thing is though, culture shock can be seen as a problem but also as an opportunity.Only by adjusting to and accepting new surroundings can you understand and appreciate it. B.Developing body language. C.So you’re less likely to further experience a new culture. D.Travelling to new cultures is a great way to expand your social circle.
