Having worked in a nature reserve(保护区) for more than 30 years, Hou Tiguo has developed a special ability—he can tell what kind of birds are around simply by their singing. “I can also tell whether they are happy or unhappy,” he added with a big smile.
His home, Baihualing, a village in Yunnan Province, is well-known for different kinds of birds. He recalled, “In the 1970s, people were so poor. Birds were often killed for food.”
His life changed in 1989 when a couple visited Baihualing. They asked him to

Shibadong Village used to be a poor place in Hunan Province. The village had no extra income(额外收入), and the roads were in bad conditions. Most villagers grew crops, but they still didn’t have enough money to live a good life.
Then, with the government’s help, the villagers had a chance to try something new. Gong Haihua came to work here after finishing university and led the villagers to create a better life. They started to grow kiwi fruits(猕猴桃) because they

thought they could make more money. Every day, villagers worked really hard in the fields. They worked together from morning to night, rain or shine. At the same time, in order to attract more attention, young people in the village posted pictures and videos of the beautiful scenery and fresh kiwi fruits online. Many people from other places saw these posts and came to visit the village and buy the kiwi fruits.
Now, Shibadong Village looks completely different. The roads are wide and flat. New houses and shops are everywhere. “I’m full of hope for the future of our village,” Gong said.
