The 4 Best Restaurants in Manchester
London gets a lot of credit as England’s best city for food, but Manchester comes in a close second. The northern city has an expansive food scene with many different global cuisines packed into its many neighborhoods. Here are 4 of Manchester’s best restaurants.
Hawksmoor
If you like a good steak, immediately book a table at Hawksmoor. Hawksmoor is also known for its massive Sunday roast, available from lunchtime on Sundays, and it’s the sort of spot where you can go for a burger at the bar. Ask your server about the Shaky Pete’s Ginger Brew, a cocktail that is representative at Hawksmoor.
Yuzu
Yuzu is your best choice for good Japanese food in the city. It’s a Japanese tapas bar, which means Yuzu serves everything from sashimi to tempura to gyoza in a way that allows the guest to try it all. It’s open for lunch and dinner, and reservations (预订) are recommended.
Hispi
Head to South Manchester to discover Hispi, a casual restaurant serving some of the most delicious dishes in the city. The menu is familiar, with selections like smoked lamb and miso-glazed squash. There’s a special Sunday lunch menu serving two or three courses, and families are welcome thanks to a beautiful kids menu. Hispi is part of a popular group of restaurants, including Burnt Truffle and Sticky Walnut. Book in advance, if possible.
Mana
Mana has been Manchester’s first Michelin-starred restaurant since 1977, which is by reservation only. Everything is presented as a set menu with an optional wine pairing, but you get to make a few choices along the way. Go for the shorter lunch menu if you want to get the experience on a budget.

A British friend told me he couldn't understand why Chinese people love eating sunflower seeds as a snack so much. “I’ve met a lot of older Chinese and many have a crack in their front teeth; I believe that’s from cracking the seeds,” he said.
I had never noticed the habit, but once he mentioned it, I suddenly became more aware. I realized that whenever I’m watching TV or typing a report, I always start mindlessly cracking sunflower seeds. My friend doesn’t like sunflower seeds, and, to him, it seems unnecessary to work so much just to get one small seed.
When we were young, the whole family would usually get together for Chinese New Year. Then, we all lived close to one another, usually in a small city, and sometime even neighbors would go door-to-door on Chinese New Year’s Eve to check out what every household was making.
I remember my parents would be in the kitchen cooking. Out in the living room, a large table would already be laid out, complete with fancy tablecloth, ready-made dumpling fillings, and dishes full of candy, fruits and sunflower seeds.
Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later, while others were for neighbors and children to eat before the evening feast. I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then.
I don’t think it’s right to criticize one’s choice in food or eating habits, no matter how strange they may seem.
It’s not only in China. When I went abroad, I found people had all sorts of strange habits when it came to food. In Denmark, they put salted red fish on bread and eat it for dinner, no matter how much it ruins your breath. They think it’s a delicacy, and it’s connected to their culture. I think it’s a wonderful tradition.
4.What did the writer become aware of?
A.She had ever typed a report about seeds.
B.She ate various snacks while watching TV.
C.She had a habit of cracking sunflower seeds.
D.She damaged her teeth by eating sunflower seeds.
5.What does the writer prove by mentioning Chinese New Year?
A.The traditions of celebrating it disappear.
B.Children can eat delicious food on that day.
C.The families get together for it.
D.Eating sunflower seeds is related to it.
6.The writer’s attitude to Denmark’s way of eating bread is _______.
A.acceptable B.critical C.neutral D.doubtful
7.What lesson can we learn from the story?
A.One kind of food doesn’t necessarily suit everyone.
B.Eating habits come from a certain culture.
C.It is good to form healthy eating habits.
D.Changing your eating habits will change your life.

“I am a 15-year-old, 170 cm tall, 89 kg boy. Can you write me a 3-day weight loss nutrition plan?” In a new study, five popular AI chatbots received similar requests from researchers, aiming to evaluate their diet advice for overweight teens.
The results show AI-generated meal plans differ greatly but share a major weakness: extremely low calories and carbohydrates (碳水化合物), together with too much protein and fat. “There was very little scientific evidence about whether the meal plans generated by these tools are nutritionally appropriate for growing teenagers,” says nutrition scientist Betül Bilen, who led the study.
Nutrition scientist Betül Bilen and her team compared AI three-day meal plans with professional diets designed by dietitians. On average, the AI meal plans were about 695 fewer calories per day, close to the calorie content of an entire meal. “Even though the models differed in many ways, they often produced a similar imbalance,” Bilen says. “Carbohydrates were generally lower, while protein and fat were higher than recommended ranges.”
The teenage years are vital for growth, bone and brain development. Strict diets will prevent teens’ healthy development. Health experts add that teenagers should never go on restrictive diets without professional guidance. Unlike AI, dietitians can consider patients’ medical conditions, family situations and social factors to make proper plans.
Besides physical risks, AI diet advice may also ruin teens’ healthy relationship with food and raise risks of disordered eating. Nowadays, over half of US teens use AI chatbots frequently for study and information. Many teens turn to online tools for health and diet tips, and some eating-disorder patients even trust AI’s wrong weight-loss views more than professional doctors.
Researchers also point out that more studies are needed to explore how real teens use AI diet plans and how AI influences their daily eating habits.
8.What is the shared problem of AI-generated meal plans?
A.They contain fewer daily meals. B.They are nutritionally unbalanced.
C.They lack enough protein and fat. D.They are too high in carbohydrates.
9.What does paragraph 4 suggest about dietitians?
A.They focus on teens’ weight loss. B.They consider more aspects than AI does.
C.They rely on AI tools to design meal plans. D.They recommend strict diets for overweight teens.
10.What can be known about AI diet advice from the last two paragraphs?
A.It may damage teens’ bond with food. B.It is widely trusted by most teenagers.
C.It can replace dietitians in the near future. D.It is more popular with eating-disorder patients.
11.What is the best title for the text?
A.AI Chatbots: The Future of Healthcare B.Different Ways to Help Teens Lose Weight
C.AI Diet Advice: A Hidden Danger for Teens D.Differences between Dietitians and AI Technology
D
Whether you shop for food in a traditional grocery store or a big-box store, most of your options are junk foods. Terms on food packaging like “low fat,” “gluten-free,” “keto-friendly” and “a good source of fiber” don’t answer the fundamental question: Is this food good for me? There is little reliable guidance available for people who don’t have the time, patience or skill to analyze the nutrition labels (标签).
But what we really need is a bold (大胆的) move that would be to prevent people from food that’s bad for them: a warning sign that a high-sugar soda or breakfast cereal product, for example, is an unhealthy choice.
Chile, Mexico, Brazil and dozens of other countries have worked to change food labeling. Research has suggested that these labels can help people understand nutritional quality and change their purchasing habits. Finally, the goal of the labels is to improve nutrition and reduce the consumption of over-processed foods.
After Chile adopted several rules in 2016, researchers found that the consumption of drinks high in sugar and sodium declined by nearly 25 percent. In Uruguay a survey published in 2020 assessing the early effects of nutritional warnings found that 58 percent of participants who noticed the warning changed their decisions about buying a product. Of those who changed their decisions, 17 percent said they chose a similar product with fewer warnings, and 18 percent decided not to buy a similar product at all.
In the United States, new labeling laws will be much more challenging to take effect. As you might expect, food producers will surely try to stop warning labels from being required. They are arguing that these plans would be costly and that those costs would be passed on to consumers. But research conducted soon after Chile’s food labeling and advertising law passed showed no effects on total employment, with negligible effects on wages (工资) and profit, even as consumer consumption of unhealthy foods declined.
To be clear, this is just one of many steps toward providing all Americans with a healthy diet. But knowable front-of-package labeling is one of the best levers (杠杆) available to policymakers, and it is already working elsewhere. It can work here, too.
12.What does paragraph 1 focus on?
A.The lack of nutrition. B.The problem with labels.
C.The shortage of food. D.The doubt about package.
13.What do the examples of Chile and Uruguay show?
A.The consumption of over-processed foods has been stopped.
B.People in the two countries have better nutrition awareness.
C.Food producers there work well with the government.
D.Warning labels can effectively change people’s buying behavior.
14.What does the underlined word “negligible” mean in paragraph 5?
A.Obvious. B.Lasting. C.Insignificant. D.Undesired.
15.What’s the author’s attitude towards adopting warning labels in the United States?
A.Unclear. B.Opposed. C.Doubtful. D.Supportive.
Healthy Shopping at the Supermarket
Shopping at the supermarket for groceries can be an adventure tour, for food producers don’t always have your best interests in mind. 16 .
Look for a short ingredient list
When you find a packaged food with a long list of ingredients on the label, just put it back on the shelf and look for a simpler version of the food. 17 . Check the list of ingredients every time, because a shorter ingredient list equals fewer added sugars and preservatives (防腐剂) .
Learn “what organic” really means
18 . All organic farms must keep records and be inspected by officially recognized inspectors. Many supermarkets now carry some organic food, and farmers’ markets, health food stores, and individual farms are good sources of organic food.
19
If you feel like the food labels “natural” and “organic” can be exchanged, well that’s exactly what food companies want you to think. Although there’s no single set of requirements for products claiming to be natural, such labels are still supposed to be accurate. Farmers or food companies that use the “natural” label are not forced to be inspected.
Don’t get trapped by watery foods
Water is the magic ingredient in prepared foods, and if it’s first on the list of ingredients, it’s clear that there’s a long list of additives (添加剂) to follow. 20 . After all, soup does take a lot of water. Since oil and water don’t mix, it takes a bunch of additives to hold everything together.
A.Be careful with “natural” labels.
B.Buy foods with “natural” labels.
C.Water is cheap, so food companies like using it.
D.Getting the organic label is a very strict process.
E.Here are some useful tips for your next shopping trip.
F.For example, you can often find water listed first in soups.
G.In fact, many of those ingredients are just sugars and chemicals.

Dayna and I are best friends. Cupcakes turned us into fierce competitors. As we prepared for the annual Baking Competition at the Baking Club, I confidently told her, “Prepare to be amazed.” She shot me a skeptical look. The event was packed with family and friends, and I was determined to beat last year’s champion, Dayna.
Mrs. Cooper from Cathy’s Cupcake and Donut Depot kicked off the competition by announcing that the first round was to bake mini cupcakes. The clock started ticking. Measuring spoons pinged against bowls. Clouds of flour settled on the countertops. Mixers whirred. Everything was going perfectly, and I tasted my creation. Mmm. Bright and amazing. Then I glanced over to see how Dayna was doing. She had accidentally dropped a dozen eggs! I turned off my mixer and rushed over to her station to help her clean up, praying my good deed wouldn’t ruin my chances.
After the mess was cleared, everyone including Dayna continued baking, and the judges tasted our cupcakes. When the results came in, I was thrilled to hear my name called for Round 2 alongside Dayna and a few others. The challenge this time was to bake standard cupcakes, but just then, I realized I’d forgotten to bring my candies for decoration. In a panic, I signaled Dayna, who kindly offered butter crackers and banana chips. Thanks to her, I was back on track. As we worked through the round, Mrs. Cooper announced that Dayna and I were moving on to the final round: colossal cupcakes
I made it. Whew. I can’t let her win again. “You showed some mad skills, Isaac,” Dayna said, her voice laced with respect. I shrugged. “You too. Thanks for saving me before.”
“No problem. May the best baker win,” she said.
I smiled. “Enough with the pleasantries. Now I’m out for sweet revenge.”
Dayna narrowed her eyes. “Bring it.”

根据原文第五段“Besides physical risks, AI diet advice may also ruin teens’ healthy relationship with food and raise risks of disordered eating. (除了身体层面的风险,人工智能给出的饮食建议还可能破坏青少年与食物之间的健康关系,增加饮食失调的风险。)”可知,人工智能的饮食建议或许会损害青少年和食物之间的良性联结。
11.主旨大意题。根据原文第二段 “The results show AI-generated meal plans differ greatly but share a major weakness: extremely low calories and carbohydrates, together with too much protein and fat.
根据第一段“Whether you shop for food in a traditional grocery store or a big-box store, most of your options are junk foods.
根据第四段“After Chile adopted several rules in 2016, researchers found that the consumption of drinks high in sugar and sodium declined by nearly 25 percent.
根据画线词的上文“They are arguing that these plans would be costly and that those costs would be passed on to consumers. But research conducted soon after Chile’s food labeling and advertising law passed showed no effects on total employment
作者在文中列举了其他国家实施食品警告标签取得的积极效果,并在最后一段中“But knowable front-of-package labeling is one of the best levers (杠杆) available to policymakers, and it is already working elsewhere. It can work here, too. (但是,便于知悉的包装正面标签是政策制定者可用的最佳杠杆之一,而且它已经在其他地方发挥作用。这在这里也行得通。)”指出这一举措在美国应该也是可行的。由此可知,作者对在美国采用警告标签持支持态度。

Food and Health
As the proverb goes, “You are what you eat.” In our fast-paced teenage life, a balanced diet is essential, serving as the cornerstone of our physical and mental well-being.
Since food fuels our bodies for daily activities and impacts our cognitive functions, cultivating sensible dietary habits plays a pivotal role in optimizing our health. Accordingly, emphasis should be placed on a diversified intake of nutrients. Furthermore, we should cut down on highly processed snacks and sugary drinks, which are often packed with hidden calories. What should not be overlooked is a regular eating routine. For instance, a nutritious breakfast provides sustained energy.
In conclusion, by making these sensible choices, we can pave the way for a more energetic future.

47.One possible version:
Final round. I sprang into action. Measuring and mixing, I grated dark chocolate and sprinkled it over the dough, determined to create a showstopper. Dayna wouldn’t know what hit her. I filled each cupcake mold and got my colossals into the oven. At Dayna’s station, three different layers — chocolate, vanilla and strawberry — sat ready. That would be a masterpiece. Unfortunately, the beautiful layered look she wanted was turning into a tie-dye effect. Still, she wasn’t giving up. At last, my colossal cupcakes were nothing short of elegance. Dayna’s turned out way better than I’d expected. As we waited for the final results, Dayna expressed doubt about her cupcakes, but I wasn’t sure of my own outcome either.
After a tense few minutes, the winner was announced: “Isaac!” I blinked with disbelief. As thunderous applause erupted, I gave a small bow. “Congratulations, Isaac!” My best friend clapped along with the crowd. I gave Dayna a shy smile. “Couldn’t have done it without you, Dayna. Thanks for saving me before.” Despite the competition, we were still a team, and that night, I called Dayna to discuss our next move. “So now we’re tied,” I said. “One win each.” She asked, “Already planning for next year?” I replied with a grin, “You can bet on it!” In that moment, I realized that no matter what the outcome was, our friendship was the sweetest victory of all.
