Welcome to today’s news. In our special global business section, I’d like to share the latest news about Chinese New Energy Vehicles, or NEVs for short, winning global popularity.
In the first half of 2026, China exported over 1.2 million NEVs, a 35% year-on-year increase. Europe remains the largest overseas market, accounting for nearly 40% of total exports. Chinese NEVs are particularly popular in Norway, taking a 42% market share there. Southeast Asia is the fastest-growing region, with sales rising by 68% in Thailand and Indonesia.
This remarkable success is rooted in China’s world-leading technologies. Chinese car makers have developed blade batteries, which are 50% safer and have a 20% longer lifespan than traditional batteries. Their 800-volt fast charging platforms, now available on over 20 models, allow cars to charge 80% in just 15 minutes. Advanced smart-driving systems supporting automatic parking and highway navigation also give Chinese brands a clear competitive advantage.
Combined with affordable prices and reliable after-sales service, Chinese NEVs are gaining widespread global trust. Industry experts predict that China’s annual NEV exports will exceed 2.5 million in 2026, further reshaping the global car market.

Throughout all the events in my life, one in particular sticks out more than the others. As I reflect on this significant event, a smile spreads across my face. As I think of Shanda, I feel loved and grateful.
It was my twelfth year of dancing. I thought it would end up like any other year: stuck in emptiness, forgotten and without the belief of any teacher or friend that I really had the potential to achieve greatness.
However, I met Shanda, a young, talented choreographer (编舞者). She influenced me to work to the best of my ability, pushed me to keep going when I wanted to give up, encouraged me and showed me the real importance of dancing. Throughout our hard work, not only did my ability to dance grow, but my friendship with Shanda grew as well.
With the end of the year came our show time. As I walked to a backstage filled with other dancers, I hoped for a good performance that would prove my improvement. I waited anxiously for my turn. Finally, after what seemed like days, the loudspeaker announced my name. Butterflies filled my stomach as I took trembling steps onto the big lighted stage. But, with the determination to succeed and eagerness to live up to Shanda’s expectations for me, I began to dance. All my troubles and nerves went away as I danced my whole heart out.
As I walked up to the judge to receive my first place shining, gold trophy (奖杯), I realized that dance is not about becoming the best. It was about loving dance for dance itself, a getaway from all my problems in the world. Shanda showed me that I could let everything go and just dance what I feel at that moment. After all the doubts that people had in me, I believed in myself and did not care what others thought. Thanks to Shanda, dance became more than a love of mine, but a passion.
24.What did the author think her dancing would be for the twelfth year?
A.A change for the better. B.A disappointment as before.
C.A proof of her potential. D.A pride of her teachers and friends.
25.How did Shanda help the author?
A.By offering her financial help. B.By entering her in a competition.
C.By coaching her for longer hours. D.By awakening her passion for dancing.
26.How did the author feel when she stepped on the stage?
A.Proud. B.Nervous. C.Scared. D.Relieved.
27.What can we learn from the author’s story?
A.Success lies in patience. B.Fame is a great thirst of the young.
C.A good teacher matters. D.A youth is to be treated with respect.
【答案】24.B 25.D 26.B 27.C

According to a new study published in the journal Science, rats, like humans, can use their brains to imagine walking to a new location or moving a virtual item to a new place, even when they are physically sitting still.
Scientists think much of the human imagination is controlled by the hippocampus (海马体), a region of the brain that plays a role in memory and learning, which makes humans able to navigate (导航) an environment using just their thoughts. The hippocampus is also involved in rats’ spatial memory. But researchers have long wondered whether rats can navigate an environment like humans can. The problem, until now, was finding a way to test that.
For the new experiment, scientists spent years developing virtual reality for rats — a brain machine that could help them answer this question. First, they implanted electrodes (电极) into the animals’ brains to record activity in their hippocampus. Then, they put the animals just on a ball-shaped running machine and supported them with a 360-degree screen showing a virtual reality environment.
As the rats ran on the running machine, they moved through the virtual environment in the screen. Researchers trained them to navigate to specific areas by rewarding them with a bit of sugar water. In another part of the experiment, they severed the running machine, leaving the rats to navigate the virtual reality environment using only their minds. In this task, the brain machine translated the animals’ brain activity into motion on the screen. When the rats recreated the hippocampus activity associated with a specific location, the screen jumped to that site, where the rats got a reward.
Three of the four rats tested were able to navigate the virtual reality tasks, according to The Washington Post. Together, the findings indicate rats can mentally navigate environments they’ve visited in the past, just like humans do. Rats can also, it seems, hold their thoughts on a specific location for several seconds.
28.What once confused the scientists before the experiment?
A.How rats’ hippocampus work. B.The location of rats’ hippocampus.
C.The structure of rats’ hippocampus. D.Whether rats have the ability to navigate.
29.What does the underlined word “severed” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Showed off. B.Switched off. C.Turned on. D.Gave away.
30.What can we conclude from the findings?
A.The rats can go somewhere by memory.
B.The rats can focus their minds for a long time.
C.The rats can translate the brain activity into motion.
D.The rats can imagine something they’ve never seen.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Rats Can Use Imagination As Well As Humans Do
B.Scientists Used Brain Machine to Test Rats’ Imagination
C.Rats Can Use Imagination to Navigate in Virtual Reality
D.Scientists Invented a Machine That Creates Virtual Reality
【答案】28.D 29.B 30.A 31.C
根据原文第二段“But researchers have long wondered whether rats can navigate an environment like humans can.(但是研究人员一直想知道老鼠是否能够像人类一样对环境进行导航。)”
根据原文第四段“As the rats ran on the running machine, they moved through the virtual environment in the screen.(当老鼠在跑步机上奔跑时,它们就在屏幕的虚拟环境中移动。)”以及“In another part of the experiment, they severed the running machine, leaving the rats to navigate the virtual reality environment using only their minds.(在实验的另一部分,他们severed跑步机,让老鼠只依靠大脑思维来导航虚拟现实环境。)”
根据原文第五段“Together, the findings indicate rats can mentally navigate environments they’ve visited in the past, just like humans do.(总而言之,这些研究结果表明老鼠可以像人类一样,在脑海中对它们曾经去过的环境进行导航。)”
根据原文第一段“According to a new study published in the journal Science, rats, like humans, can use their brains to imagine walking to a new location or moving a virtual item to a new place, even when they are physically sitting still.(根据发表在《科学》期刊上的一项新研究,老鼠和人类一样,即便身体保持静止,也可以用大脑想象走到新地点或者把虚拟物品移动到新位置。)”

For years, vertical farming has been promoted as the future of agriculture — a way to grow massive amounts of food in climate-controlled warehouses, using far less water and land than traditional farming. But the industry has faced persistent challenges: high energy costs, technical failures, and questions about whether it can grow anything beyond leafy greens.
Now, a new wave of vertical farms is emerging, backed by major investors and advances in LED lighting and automation. In cities like Newark, New Jersey, massive indoor farms now produce up to 2 million pounds of greens per year in spaces the size of a grocery store. These farms use hydroponic systems that deliver nutrients directly to plant roots, eliminating the need for soil and allowing year-round production independent of the weather.
“We can grow anywhere,” said one industry executive. “We’re not dependent on climate, and we’re not dependent on seasons. We can put a farm in the middle of a city and deliver produce the same day it’s harvested.”
The environmental benefits are significant. Vertical farming uses up to 95% less water than conventional agriculture and eliminates the carbon emissions associated with long-distance transportation. With produce often traveling thousands of miles from farm to plate, local indoor farming offers an appealing alternative.
Yet skepticism remains. Critics point to the enormous energy consumption required to power LED lights and climate control systems. A vertical farm can use as much electricity as a small town, and unless that energy comes from renewable sources, the carbon footprint can exceed that of traditional farming. Additionally, the technology remains expensive — construction costs for a single facility can exceed $100 million.
Perhaps the biggest limitation is what vertical farms can actually grow. The economics only work for high-value, fast-growing crops like lettuce, herbs, and microgreens. Staple crops like wheat, rice, and corn — which feed the majority of the world’s population — are unlikely to ever be producible in vertical farms.
Despite these challenges, proponents argue that vertical farming is not meant to replace traditional agriculture but to complement it. In an increasingly urbanized world with growing climate pressures, having a reliable source of fresh produce grown within cities may prove invaluable. As one researcher put it, “This isn’t about growing all our food indoors. It’s about building resilience into our food system.”
32.What can we learn about vertical farming from paragraph 1?
A.It offers methods to cut farming costs.
B.It reflects expectations plus real challenges.
C.It shows the popularity of vertical farming.
D.It proves vertical farming improves food output.
33.What’s the strength of hydroponic systems?
A.It helps reduce the amount of energy consumption.
B.It makes the growth of indoor staple crops possible.
C.It can be operated without soil and weather limits.
D.It allows farmers to expand food production easily.
34.Which of the following do critics probably agree on?
A.Developing vertical farms needs careful consideration.
B.Using new technology needs lower construction costs.
C.Improving traditional farming needs little public support.
D.Cutting the cost of facilities in a small town needs action.
35.What is the author’s attitude towards vertical farming?
A.Objective and reasonable. B.Skeptical and opposed.
C.Doubtful and pessimistic. D.Supportive and confident.

根据第一段中的“For years, vertical farming has been promoted as the future of agriculture — a way to grow massive amounts of food in climate-controlled warehouses, using far less water and land than traditional farming. But the industry has faced persistent challenges: high energy costs, technical failures, and questions about whether it can grow anything beyond leafy greens.(多年来,垂直农业一直被推崇为农业的未来——一种在气候控制的仓库中种植大量粮食的方法,相较于传统农业大幅节水省地。但该行业面临着持续的挑战:高昂的能源成本、技术故障,同时人们也质疑它除了绿叶蔬菜外能否种植其他作物。)”可知,本段既阐述了人们对垂直农业的高度期待(未来农业、高效节水节地),也指出了其面临的现实挑战(高成本、技术故障、作物单一)。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“These farms use hydroponic systems that deliver nutrients directly to plant roots, eliminating the need for soil and allowing year-round production independent of the weather.(这类农场采用水培系统,直接将养分输送至植物根部,无需土壤,且不受天气制约,可全年不间断生产。)”
Critics point to the enormous energy consumption required to power LED lights and climate control systems. A vertical farm can use as much electricity as a small town, and unless that energy comes from renewable sources, the carbon footprint can exceed that of traditional farming. Additionally, the technology remains expensive — construction costs for a single facility can exceed $100 million.(但质疑之声依旧存在。批评者指出,LED照明与气候控制系统会消耗巨量电力。一座垂直农场的耗电量堪比一座小镇,若能源并非来自可再生能源,其碳足迹会超过传统农业。除此之外,技术造价高昂——单座农场的建设成本可超1亿美元。)”可知,批评者认为垂直农业能耗高、建设成本昂贵,存在明显短板,由此可推断他们会认同发展垂直农业需要谨慎考量。
35.推理判断题。根据第四段中的“The environmental benefits are significant. Vertical farming uses up to 95% less water than conventional agriculture and eliminates the carbon emissions associated with long-distance transportation.(环保优势十分突出。相比传统农业,垂直农业最多可节约95%的水资源,还能省去长途运输产生的碳排放。)”、第五段中的“Yet skepticism remains. Critics point to the enormous energy consumption required to power LED lights and climate control systems. A vertical farm can use as much electricity as a small town, and unless that energy comes from renewable sources, the carbon footprint can exceed that of traditional farming. Additionally, the technology remains expensive — construction costs for a single facility can exceed $100 million.(但质疑之声依旧存在。批评者指出,LED照明与气候控制系统会消耗巨量电力。一座垂直农场的耗电量堪比一座小镇,若能源并非来自可再生能源,其碳足迹会超过传统农业。除此之外,技术造价高昂——单座农场的建设成本可超1亿美元。)”以及第七段中的“Despite these challenges, proponents argue that vertical farming is not meant to replace traditional agriculture but to complement it. In an increasingly urbanized world with growing climate pressures, having a reliable source of fresh produce grown within cities may prove invaluable.(尽管存在上述种种挑战,支持者认为垂直农业并非旨在取代传统农业,而是对其形成补充。在城市化程度不断加深、气候压力日益加剧的世界中,在城市内部拥有可靠新鲜农产品来源,可能是极有价值的。)”可知,文章既客观陈述垂直农业节水、低碳运输等优点,也如实呈现能耗高、造价高昂等争议点,完整呈现批评者与支持者双方不同看法,作者未偏向任意一方,既承认问题,也认可价值,由此可推断作者对垂直农业持客观理性的态度。

Choosing the Right Type. Most of the studies support the idea that there’s no one style of yoga that’s best for weight loss. “Ultimately, the best yoga is the practice that fits for you-the one you’ll commit to,” says Sherwin. “There are now many accessible styles of yoga that meet you where you are no matter what your size, age, physical challenge or background. 40 ”

上文“Yoga has a well-deserved reputation for helping to improve balance and flexibility and for inducing calm and relaxation.(瑜伽在提升平衡感、柔韧性以及带来平静放松感方面口碑极佳)”阐述了瑜伽在提升身体机能与心理放松方面的公认益处。空后“While yoga burns fewer calories than high-intensity cardio, it still lifts your heart rate and builds muscle.(虽然瑜伽燃烧的卡路里比高强度有氧运动少,但它仍能提升心率、锻炼肌肉)”转而指出瑜伽在燃脂增肌方面的具体生理作用。
37.由上文“Yoga helps manage stress, and studies show that high levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, can lead to an increase in abdominal fat.(瑜伽能帮助调节压力,研究表明高浓度的压力荷尔蒙皮质醇会导致腹部脂肪增加)”及下文“It’s been confirmed that yoga has an impact on the body’s stress response and reduces the production of hormones linked to weight gain.(已证实瑜伽能影响身体的压力反应,减少和增重相关的荷尔蒙分泌)”可知,上文提到了压力激素皮质醇导致腹部脂肪,下文确认瑜伽能减少这类激素,本空应具体说明皮质醇是如何通过影响食欲导致增重的。
38.由上文““Many people think of yoga as a fitness workout, but traditional yoga has a much greater scope,” explains Sherwin, a yoga teacher with the Cleveland Clinic Yoga.
39.由下文“Recent research shows that doing yoga long term not only can help people lose weight but also can strengthen cognitive skills to help keep it off.(最新研究表明长期练习瑜伽不仅能帮人减重,还能强化认知能力来维持减重效果)”可知,本段核心是围绕长期坚持瑜伽来维持减重成果展开,本空作为段首主题句,要概括该段核心内容。
40.由上文“There are now many accessible styles of yoga that meet you where you are no matter what your size, age, physical challenge or background.(现在有很多容易上手的瑜伽流派,无论你的体型、年龄、身体状况或背景如何,都能适配你的情况)”可知,前文说明瑜伽适配各类人群,本空要对该内容做收尾总结。

John Haney, a business adviser from Belmont, North Carolina, had no interest in basketball at all — let alone coaching. Yet nothing mattered more to him than being a good father to his 10-year-old son Jack. His job kept him constantly travelling on business, and every time he missed Jack’s small moments to remember — the first time tying shoes, the first goal in the backyard — guilt ate away at him.
What worried John most was his own childhood. His father had been a cold and distant man, tired out by long, hard workdays with no love for the job. He’d come home worn out, never playing catch or sharing sincere talks. When John was 12, his parents divorced (离婚), leaving him wanting the fatherly bond he’d never had. John promised he’d never let Jack feel that loneliness, but he was stuck -he had no idea how to close the gap with his son.
One fresh and cool November afternoon, John came home early and found Jack bouncing a basketball in the yard, his face shining with excitement. “Dad, my friend is on a basketball team! Can you sign me up, please?” Jack begged, his big eyes full of hope. John hesitated — he knew nothing about the sport, and Jack’s interests usually disappeared as quickly as they came. But his wife Ashley patted (轻拍) his arm gently, her voice warm: “Why not give it a try? Make what’s important to Jack important to you. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Just be there.”
Those words shocked John like a warning. That night, he stayed up late looking up local kids’ basketball teams. The next day, he signed Jack up, and on a sudden urge, he ticked (勾选) the box to volunteer as the team’s coach. Now all he had to do was wait for the first practice.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Paragraph 1:
Their first practice turned out to be a mess.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
John changed his mind for the next practice.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
Their first practice turned out to be a mess. John failed three shots, drawing quiet laughs from the kids. While other teams ran tidy training, his players wandered without purpose, running for the ball like flying birds. Jack, once excited, looked sad. Upset by his own lack of skill, John spoke sharply to him. Jack’s eyes filled with tears; he threw the ball down and ran off. Their drive home was silent. John’s heart heavy with regret — he’d let his son down, just as his own dad had.
Paragraph 2:
John changed his mind for the next practice. Gathering the team, he smiled: “Let’s just have fun today! No training, no pressure.” The kids cheered, passing and shooting freely. Suddenly, Jack’s shot went through the basket. John ran over, giving him a big high-five. “You did it!” he smiled. Jack’s face lit up. From then on, they laughed more than they competed. By the end of the season, their connection grew stronger — John finally understood: being a good dad wasn’t about being perfect, but showing up with a ready heart.
①引起:draw/catch/capture
②跑开:run off/run away
③欢呼:cheer/hail
①悲伤的:sad/sorrowful
②悔恨:regret/remorse

Spring 2026 Green Newsletter
This term, we’ll be looking at a new theme and keeping you updated on what we can do to get green!
Food Waste Action Week
This year, we are taking part in the Food Waste Action Week, looking at ways to reduce the amount of food we throw away. It has been proven that creating and sticking to a meal plan can cut food waste. You can take part by sending in your weekly menu plans, and the best will be published on our Socials pages. Keep your eyes peeled and we will be posting some great ideas for using up leftover food from great soups to homemade hair conditioner!
Simpler Recycling
Did you know that from March 31, all student halls across the country will be required to separate food waste? This means that instead of unused food going to landfill and producing greenhouse gases as it rots, it will be sent to treatment plants where it will be made into biofuel. There will be lots more information on what can and can’t be recycled coming soon. If you have any questions, just ask your site teams — we’re here to help!
Earth Hour
Started in Sydney, this now global event asks us to switch off lights and electrical items for an hour on 22 March from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. and enjoy the peace and quiet. No competitions for this, just take a positive step to join a global movement and help tackle climate change!
Plastic Cleared Challenge
Single-use plastics are everywhere — from packaging to takeaway boxes. This April, join our campus-wide challenge to cut plastic waste. Bring your own bags, bottles, and cups. Our Green Representatives will run workshops on spotting hidden plastics and making sustainable swaps. Snap a photo of your plastic-free lunch, share it with Plastic Cleared Challenge, and tag us for a chance to win a zero-waste starter kit!

Yoga has a well-deserved reputation for helping to improve balance and flexibility and for inducing calm and relaxation. 36 While yoga burns fewer calories than high-intensity cardio, it still lifts your heart rate and builds muscle. Here’s more about how yoga is a complete body and mind workout.
Reducing Stress, Reducing Pounds. Yoga helps manage stress, and studies show that high levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, can lead to an increase in abdominal fat. 37 . It’s been confirmed that yoga has an impact on the body’s stress response and reduces the production of hormones linked to weight gain.
Moving Well, Eating Well. “Many people think of yoga as a fitness workout, but traditional yoga has a much greater scope,” explains Sherwin, a yoga teacher with the Cleveland Clinic Yoga. 38 . She says this is a powerful practice that helps break old habits and unconscious patterns of behavior that could be getting in the way of healthier eating. In a 2016 study, subjects reported becoming aware of the effect of certain foods on their bodies during their yoga practice.
39 . Recent research shows that doing yoga long term not only can help people lose weight but also can strengthen cognitive skills to help keep it off. “Our findings suggest that yoga boosts long-term weight loss by improving distress tolerance, mindfulness, self-compassion and mood,” a professor at Brown University says.
